On this day:
1927 – Mae West is sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity for her play Sex.
1956 – Actress Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier of Monaco.
1987 – The Simpsons premieres as a short cartoon on The Tracey Ullman Show.

Of course, there is more, but these 3^^^ caught my eye.

Apparently, it's also Primrose Day in the UK, we don't live there, but I posted a photo of Primroses so that we might enjoy them just the same.

heard about it on 1010 wins about an hour ago. crazytown. heard they dropped 7000 (yes, seven thousand) cops, swat, etc. in that area and have it shut down. going door to door. bombing bastard should either be in custody or dead before the morning is over. i just hope no one else gets hurt or killed by this lousy fuck.

in happier news, it's casual friday. i hear my blue jeans calling my ass. did you hear that???

God forgive me, but i hope they kill him or he kills himself. insult on injury would be paying to house this piece of moldy shit in a high security jail, pay for him to have a lawyer, money spent on a trial, money spent on automatic death penalty appeals, etc. just kill his ass.

The names of the suspects are all over the internet. Supposedly, they were said multiple times all over police scanners.
The one still at large is the missing Brown student. From PA, parents from India. Apparently he had leftist/Marxist politics.

Of course, all of this could be BS.

I can tell you their motives arkady.
It's part of the continuing War On Terror.
Chechnya has been a hotspot of terrorists for the past three decades.
The Chechen Islamic radicals are to Russia, what Al Quaeda is to the US.
(recall the Beslan massacre where they killed hundreds of women and children in a school)

I want to know what moron at the State Dept. thought it would be a good idea
to give permanent visas to two Chechen men with obvious military training?

I am experiencing this major cognitive dissonance regarding these young men. What a horrible tragedy; how did their lives take this evil turn?

The younger guy, won a Cambridge Latin high school scholarship and well loved. Others commenting "No one can believe that it is this young man." "Breaks my heart about this kid" says one of the parents. Ok, I think I better get on with my day.

yeah, the way out web sites are all over the "government plot" behind all this. Predictable.
During the last two FBI conferences, they've let some nutjob "reporter" from a nutblog ask questions with the rest of the press. During the first FBI press conference he asked it this was part of the government plot and the Governor quickly said "NO" and moved to the next question. That same guy was there yesterday asking the same type of questions from what I could hear.

OK, CGar, I'll wait for arkady to weigh in, but it looks like you win on this one -- follows the he/him rule. Usually, a preposition is the marker for when you would use "whom" e.g., to who, for whom, etc. But this is an exception that makes sense.

pepper, I've had an incredibly stressful week, so I'm assiduously avoiding making any plans this weekend, and planning to stay close to home (tempting as it is to venture to the South Slope to see what chazerai and drek they're selling on the farm), but if you want to try for coffee at some point, txt me. I emailed you my number. If you don't txt, then email me. You can always try calling, but I don't usually answer the phone.

Anthony’s ‘Honor’
He’ll run ’cuz he has none

By MARK CUNNINGHAM
Last Updated: 11:03 PM, April 18, 2013
Posted: 10:54 PM, April 18, 2013
It may seem physically impossible, but it looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Anthony Weiner.
The former member (of Congress) popped up at 15 percent in a mayoral-race poll, though the Marist survey failed to disclose just how many Post headline-writers its sample included.
Or reporters, for that matter: After all, the toughest part of their job is exposing a politician, and Weiner’s already done that for us.
In this race, the hard part will be getting Weiner to talk about what’s he’s famous for. “I am not going to get into the details of every bit of it,” he told NY1’s Errol Louis this week; “I’ll let other people do it.”
e’s not dodging, mind you — it’s about respect, he claimed — “out of respect for the idea that I’ve laid it all out for [his wife] and out of some respect for the privacy of the people who were at the other end of these correspondences, who had their lives turned upside down.”
Right, because otherwise Weiner would be happy to spend the campaign talking about his habit of Tweeting photos of his member to young women, and about his weeks of lying about it after he got caught. C’mon, what guy doesn’t love to talk about his genitals?
So it’s not that Tony doesn’t want to talk about the compulsive behavior that exposed him as a self-indulgent liar. It’s his sense of honor to his victims.
Or, just maybe, he’s still lying his undies off.
Consider his reasons for thrusting himself into the race.
First, there’s that $1.5 million in hard-earned cash that goes away unless he runs for citywide office this year.
Except it was hard-earned by the taxpayers, not Anthony: He’s legally entitled to it only because the City Council voted in a system of welfare for politicians. And an honorable man might say he got it under false pretenses — by claiming to be a different kind of person than his perverted Tweets showed him to truly be.
Indeed, those funds were awarded to match (at a ratio of six to one) actual donations from the people of New York. After his spectacular disgrace, wouldn’t an honorable man at least have offered to return it to anyone who wanted his money back, even if it left him entitled to less “free” cash?
But, hey, that $1.5 million would let Weiner hire a lot of staff to stroke his ego, and buy a lot of ads to pump up his now-flaccid image. Little surprise that it’s tough for Anthony to let it go.
Plus, he must figure he’d quickly rise above the existing field of candidates. The only one who can even think of rivaling Weiner’s Twitter exposure is Bill de Blasio — and that’s only because of his habit of hiring staffers who can’t resist racist and anti-Semitic hate-Tweets.
And, in the end, Weiner probably doesn’t have many choices if he wants to start supporting his family: Nobody in the private sector is going to hire a guy who’s shown himself capable of such idiocy.
On the other hand, if he does give up on elective office, there are plenty of other public-sector opportunities in this town, including ones where out-of-control Tweeting is apparently a job skill.
April 19, 2013 11:39 AM - Slopefarm
LOL, 6. I just clipped this part from the column: "But, hey, that $1.5 million would let Weiner hire a lot of staff to stroke his ego, and buy a lot of ads to pump up his now-flaccid image." Four double entendres in one sentence, by my count. Invite your Post friend to join us. He'd fit right in (nh).

6, I think the media, and the Post in particular, is going to let Weiner have it (nh) daily until he, um, pulls out of the race. (Gee, we missed that one the other day.) They will remind him every second about the rough ride he can expect if he stays in, and will constantly make fun of his shortcomings. Very unlikely Weiner can come out on top in this environment. (And very unlikely media will be able to control its impulses in this area.)
April 19, 2013 11:51 AM - sixyearsandcounting
Seems there was some rift between uncle and father. News media interviewing uncle was nuts - totally disrespectful, constantly interrupting him, shouting questions. If you want him to talk, and you want information, just effing relax and let him talk and wait your effing turn.

Chechen President's* message, translated by another friend:

"Tragic events have happened in Boston. As a result of the terrorist attack people have been killed. We have previously expressed our condolences to those living in the city and the people of America. Today, as reported by mass media, during an attempted arrest a certain Tsarnaev was killed. It would have been logical if he had been detained and an investigation carried out, all the circumstances and the degree of his guilt figured out. Apparently, special services at any cost were needed to calm society. Any attempt to make the connection between Chechnya and Tsarnaevs, if they are guilty, are in vain. They grew up in the U.S., their attitudes and beliefs were formed there. It is necessary to seek the roots of evil in America. The whole world must fight terrorism. This we know better than anyone else. We wish recovery to all the victims and share the Americans’ feelings of sorrow."

*Though he's more like what we'd call a governor, since Chechnya is a province of Russia.

Legion - There's a distinct diff between assholes & nuts - your being a doc I'd've thought you'd know that.

From Fred kaplan's take on Slate: (here's the link: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/war_stories/2013/04/vladimir_putin_s_intelligence_service_knows_chechnya_the_russian_president.html)

Putin’s popularity, in the early years of his presidency, stemmed largely from his hard-line tactics against the Chechen rebels, who were waging a separatist insurgency in their southern province and, to that end, launching terrorist attacks in Moscow. During that era, in the mid-to-late 1990s, the rebels, though mainly Muslim, were motivated largely by nationalism—as were the leaders of Chechen rebellions dating back to the 19th century. But as Putin put down the insurgency with increasing force, the survivors grew more and more radical, and in the past few years, the movement has taken on explicitly Islamic colors, including an alliance with al-Qaida. This has only hardened Putin’s determination to defeat them.

One result of this: Russian intelligence services are all over Chechen radicals. That means that if—and this is a very big if—the Tsarnaevs had ever been in touch with Chechen radicals or with Islamists elsewhere who have ever been in touch with Chechen radicals, then Putin’s spy agencies have a record of it.

Putin has another reason for getting engaged in this probe. The 2014 Winter Olympics are taking place in Russia—specifically in Sochi, near the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, only 300 miles from Chechnya. Putin’s biggest political and public-relations nightmare is a terrorist attack disrupting his Olympics, his grand moment on the world stage.

"Any recs for where best to go (and where best to park)?"

slopefarm,
the easiest thing to do is to park in the large municipal parking lot just off Main Street. It's so congested there that there's usually no parking anywhere, especially on a weekend.

Once you park, if you want to try a lot of things in one convenient place, go to the New World Mall Food Court. If you're lucky, you'll catch some live entertainment. I've been there a few times and just about everything is good. Anthony Bourdain did an episode where he stopped by there though I don't recall what he ate.
There are several Hot Pot restaurants in the area but that requires prepping and cooking your own food so it's kind of an effort. One restaurant I went to had flat screens at each table but I was busy trying to cook the beef strips properly and had no time to flip through channels and chat with friends.

If it's too crazy, you might opt to work your way towards Northern Boulevard where there are about 10,000 Korean restaurants. I really love their marinated talbe barbacue.

Not sure yet, dh. I know Mrs. Slopey and farmhand will be putting out some clothes for sale (and farmhand may do some baking and sell some goodies). Probably some kids' books and YA novels. I'll be rummaging around the cellar and through some CDs and books this evening to see what to sell. I do have an old television (NOT a flatscreen, not even close) that I plan to dig up and sell for next to nothing. I bet about 8-12 neighbors will be selling stuff. I have some surplus tiles, too -- white daltile subway and a few other types. It's also my turn to wander around the block and collect block association dues for the block party a few months later.

Great year for a block party, btw. Definitely get some mayoral candidate appearances.

Randi, I'd love to know what I ever did to you that causes you to jump all over my comments here or on Brownstoner. I don't see what's either wrong or inaccurate about that statement. I moved to BS in 1983, in the middle of the crack wars. While most of the action was low level wannabes, there were some serious players around. 98% of that business was conducted in places other than where I lived, but we were all aware of it, in one way or another.

Interesting, Legion, and his anti-Shia comment on another person's Youtube video squares with radical Sunnism. Anyway, we'll see if he had any serious connections or if he was self-taught.

Lots of dispute over the extent to which they had assimilated, which I don't think matters a bit. Obviously lots of domestic terrorism is perpetrated by native-born Americans and lots of non-assimilated immigrants who are perfectly law-abiding.

We had our local pharmaceutical entrepreneurs on the corner of our block, six. At least one of them lived on the block. Low level, but dangerous, as you had to walk past them to get anywhere. They didn't bother people who weren't customers, but they brought the block down, and there was always the chance someone would decide to go to war just as you were walking by them. They also had really pitiful hookers hanging around too, for obvious reasons. Our block association worked hard with the police to get rid of them.
April 19, 2013 2:50 PM - Arkady
We had a drug house on our block too. Took us 2 years to get rid of them even w/ police help - had to keep diaries of cars stopping, hookers, etc. They probably weren't very successful since they stripped the copper pipe out to sell - you'd think they wouldn't need to supplement their income.

I am not following this whole Boston thing. Going to attempt to watch Survivor tonight, for the third time. Grrrr.

This morning on the train, I had a "say something if you see something" moment, but I thought I was just being racist even thinking it, but it was beyond bizarre. A man, totally the stereotypical image of what you would think a hardcore muslim would dress and look like (clothes, beard, etc) wearing a yankees jacket (perhaps it was the mets) and a matching cap, with a book called "the boroughs" or "the five boroughs" or something along those lines. It was just really bizarre. This was around 905 on the R train going into manhattan at the Prince Street stop.

Yes, suicide is a serious no-no. All the fatwas allowing suicide bombing have been issued in the last few decades - it's a very modern invention. There were medieval sects that allowed it - that's where "assassins" comes from, from the al-hashasheen sect - but they were far out of the mainstream of Islam.

thanks, six. i'd imagine the more recent fatwas are in reaction to the way the bombs work and the knowledge that one will die if they use them. can't get anyone to make that sacrifice for Islam if the result is to lose the heavenly reward.

boat owner had gone out after s.i.p. order lifted, noticed his boat cover was shifted, looked in boat and saw blood and what looked like a body. he got off the boat and ran and called cops. that's when the recent flooding of cops happened along with shots and explosions.
April 19, 2013 8:07 PM - sixyearsandcounting
The suspect must be quite injured, maybe unconscious, if someone came that close to him and he didn't react.
April 19, 2013 8:09 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
i'm thinking he's dead. they are assuming he's been hiding in there bleeding and injured since last night's shoot out. if that's the case, he likely bled out.

I can't imagine what's been going through this kid's head! 19. The story is going to be something.

I saw someone's comment earlier about this being like an action movie. I had the thought, this morning as I watched snippets of the coverage on TV while I got ready for work this morning, that some movie/script writer somewhere was likely taking this all down.

the last round of 30 shots were done by him only. police were under orders not to shoot back in case he was wearing a suicide vest and it would be set off. remote control cameras were sent in to peek at him and determined he was incapacitated to one level or another and they moved in and grabbed him.

um. NO. 19 years old is not a "boy". WTF is going on with people extending adolescence? Just cuz old people get older and older and older and live forever doesnt meant that a 19 year isn't an ADULT, and a VERY capable adult with more power to do harm than people in their 20s and 30s. Stop making stupid excuses for age. Stop coddling. It's SO lame.

I know for some people, pretending a 19 year old is still a "child" means when they are 30 and 40 doesnt make them feel so old, but get real.

I hope after all of this, that gang violence and shootings are treated as domestic terrorism, cuz that *IS* what it is. We put down an entire city for people hurt and dead in a marathon, yet black people are gunned down (many many innocent) every day and we don't particularly seem to care. Yeah, things that make you go hmmmm.

Granted, I do realize it's apples and oranges, but still... There are certain issues that should be discussed. When gangs are taken down, the process takes YEARS (with all kinds of corruption), yet when something like the Boston thing goes down it takes 48 hours. America could EASILY destroy gangs and the violence they cause to innocent people, but we don't. Why?

OKay, g'nite. I'm kinda pissy right now. Going to the beach tomorrow, I need sea and sun therapy. As much as I hate this city sometimes, I am so glad I can just hop on the subway and be on the beach in less than an hour. That is amazing to me.
