If any dish is the national dish of Bosnia, it would have to be Cevapcici (che- VAp-chee-chee). They are popular throughout the former Yugoslavia, but most people agree (one of the few things the Balkans actually agree on) that they are the best in Sarajevo. Specifically at a place in Old Town, Zeljo, named for the local soccer team.

They are little breakfast sausage-like logs made from ground meat (usually veal, lamb, maybe beef, never pork) and spices (but not hot spicy). They are served with chopped raw onion and a pita-like bread called somun. Plain yogurt poured over them is optional, and ajvar is also a common accompaniment. There are many, many restaurants, called cevapcinica, all over, and cevapcici are all they serve...

dobro jutro.

Yeah, I don't like the yogurt either. Actually, a little secret, I don't like cevapcici very much. I don't hate them, but they are very rich, and I always feel a little sick after eating them... shhhhhhhhh.

The Beau doesn't care for them much either, but we keep it to ourselves. He prefers plijeskavica, which is essentially the same meat, made into a big thin patty, served in a somun with cabbage and other stuff. A Balkan burger, really.

If used properly, that assignment could be very effective. A good teacher would have to debrief the class afterwards, the students could describe how easy it was to get caught up in a propaganda machine and spew things they know to be false, and (unless someone didn't do the work) why they followed the teacher's orders. That would be a very effective lesson and the students would never forget it.

Interesting, enlightened comment on it...

"Rabbi Donald P. Cashman of the B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation, the father of three Albany High graduates, was more forgiving. “Hypothetical situations are often effective teaching tools,” he said, and debating positions one may not believe in can also be valuable.

“We know it’s important for kids to get out of their comfort zones,” Rabbi Cashman said, adding that the assignment seemed to correspond with Holocaust Remembrance Day, known as Yom Hashoah, which was Monday."

Thought experiments! A subversive educational tool! Good Lord, do we really want thinking citizens here?

I've worked in nightclubs, where morons threaten to shoot you over the tiniest things, but don't really mean anything by it, and are easily ignored.

I've worked at an american college for 24 years, where everyone, including students, will get their fucking panties in a bunch at the drop of a hat, and threaten you with universal shunning, a consequence not to be taken lightly. And yet, somehow they claim to be in favour of free speech. Apparently they were never exposed to thought experimentation, leaving their brains flabby and undeveloped, if not actually vestigal.

""The routine of defecation goes to the root of citizenship. Defecation is (or should be) a daily function - to those suffering from the "almost universal complaint" it is apt to be a daily sacrament! I've never visited India. Just once had a stopover in Delhi en route to Beijing. We landed on the tarmac just after sunrise and having a window seat, I was anxious to glean all I could about the place from that fleeting moment.

Farms lie adjacent to the runway. I saw workers out in the fields, each scattered pretty far apart from each other. They had no tools, no baskets or crates for collection. I, with the curiosity of a cat, watched. Dressed in lightweight shirts, they walked out a distance, pause and then squat.

It took me a while.

Speaking of the day...from my bed, where I've spent far more time than anywhere else this week, I recently realized that when the shades are up a bit and I am slouched down slightly, I have this wonderful rooftop view through the trees, that feels very New England town-ish, with roof peaks, weather vanes and chimneys. Question... Can I put fish stuff, like decorations, stones, gravel, plants, etc in the dishwasher? I have never used the dishwasher here. We keep our recycling in it. I would just use plain hot water, no soap obviously, but because the dishwasher has never been used, would that be problematic? I feel like putting all the stuff in the dishwasher, let it run, would save me a lot of time from hand cleaning each thing. And while it's running I can empty the tanks, put in new water, and condition the water.

Otherwise I have to clean each thing by hand under hot hot water, lay them out, etc.

Ugh, I need to start changing fish tank day to Friday nights. I am way more into it than on a Saturday I've noticed. I almost want to put it off to tomorrow, but that would be a really bad habit to get into. Okay, going to be a good parent to my scale babies now. Catching them in the mason jars is the hardest part. Dudley goes right in on command with no issues. Catching Dinky Pinky II and Charlize Theron is really difficult. Jamie Lee, er, it's like putting a body into a body bag. No fight or difficulty. She just plops right in.

I am thinking about putting Dudley's girlfriend, Yvette Turtle (dont worry she's plastic) in Jamie Lee's tank to stir it up a little. Would that be mean to Dudley (he LOVES her). And would it annoy Jamie Lee or would that be good for her? I have some other plastic animals that came with the set, I think a shark and a whale and some other random little mermaids and stuff. NONE of my fish ever liked the mermaids I put in their tanks though. In fact, Dudley was outright Bitchy about the mermaid I put in his tank. Literally he kept ramming into her hard over and over until she fell down off top the Roman Columns and he had a smug look on his face after he did that, like he accomplished something big.

Shit gotta run, I took out the dividers between the tanks and Charlie and Dudley are flaring (puffing up their chests like goombas puff up their chests when they seem competition) at each other, except it's their gills or something.

THE worst part of doing these tank changes is moving cords around, arranging lights and heaters and my laptop and not getting electrocuted lol.

rob - Get one of those little aquarium nets - makes catching them a lot easier.
April 13, 2013 4:13 PM - Deleted
Nah, its actually a lot easier feeding them and letting them go right into the mason jar with their water already in the tank. tons less stress, and nets are bad for bettas scales and slimecoat. I do have on in case I really cant get one in the mason jar. FYI I need to really get to the pet store and get Dudley a working heater. His flat out doesnt work. All the other three have Top Fin brands and they work. His is called Zoo Med and it does not work. Yet he is my liveliest fun fish and seems to have no probs with the water a little cooler than the rest. The heaters are cheap though. Im tempted to go into manhattan and get a new heater for Dud's tank and replace Jamie Lee. She is just flat out miserable. The thought of flushing a live fish though sounds mean to me :( But I am tired of this, I've tried so much with him. I keep flipping back and forth between it being a he and a she, it's officially a he. When you look at all four of my tanks, three of them are swimming around having fun and he still just plops on his side and looks all miserable. Would it bad to flush him and get a Jamie Lee 2.0? A female Jamie Lee this time, plus i'd have two male and two female again. I think i'd feel foolish bringing a 5 dollar fish to the vet as well. Would it be wrong to freeze her in a mason jar in the freezer? Then he'd be forever frozen (well as long as there's no blackout) and I think it would be less cruel than flushing him, no? When you freeze to death you actually wind up getting super hot and warm right before dying and it's a very peaceful way to die really. I think Jamie Lee wants me to put him out of his misery. Sounds a tad Dr. Kavorkian. :(

GRRRR I am so torn on this issue. I've never had a fish die naturally on me (at least not these fish Ive been keeping lately). Dinky I was brutally murdered by Heidi Fleiss, that was bad enough to deal with. Then Heidi Fleiss just went missing. Imagine being a parent and one of your kids was murdered by one of your other kids and then that kid that murdered your other kid went MISSING! :-/ But then you still have a disabled kid and you feel like it's best to put it down because of it's disability? Okay, I have decided to keep Jamie Lee as long as he is still alive. Perhaps he just enjoys sleeping on his side. I sleep on my side! When I pick up Dudley's heater on Monday I am going to see if I can buy Jamie Lee some LIVE bloodworms. I can't believe I entertained the thought of killing one of my fish. Have I completely forgotten the misery I went through when I put Duke down!? Ugh. Maybe I'm a sociopath :(

Going to Petsmart in SoHo and getting a heater for Dudley's tank and getting a replacement fish for Jamie Lee's tank. Nevermind. It would be stupid to bring a ginormous CRT tv in this bedroom again, the reason I got rid of the last one was because it weighed like 500 pounds. That is a beautiful picture of the Hellabores, Cobble. I want to use that on my iphone. (I used another winter picture of a tree that you posted on my iphone cover).

I did a lot of errands today and went to a baby shower (not my favorite thing to do). On the way back from S.I., I stopped at Rossman Farms on 3rd Ave and 26th St. in Brooklyn. I got an astounding amount of food for 51 dollars. I love that place. An example, strawberries 78 cents for a pound of strawberries, 68 cents a pound for golden delicious apples, large yogurt for 1.78, 8 navel oranges for 98 cents, 1 GALLON of milk for 1,79 (unbelievable). R is working. I am still coughing so I plan to watch some Foyle's War (BBC Mystery series) on Netflix. And get a good night sleep.

I've given up on buying lettuce and anything related cuz I love lettuce, but shit goes bad SO fast. I pop a jolly rancher now and then telling myself there's your fruit, you fruit, and somehow I justify it. But that's bad. I should at least kick it up a notch to Starburst (tropical, not original).

OOOOOOOOOOOOOH I was going to mention this the other day. I got a spam mail at work about the 5 fruit tree! I was like wtf, googled it and apparently there are trees that grow five different kinds of fruits!? Apparently they exist. that's awesome!

I was under the impression that you can put female bettas in the same tank. They were fine for two days. It was weird because Dinky was the one who kept pestering Heidi Fleiss at first, but then they seemed to get along and stuff and ignore each other. It was fine for two days, but came home from work to find Dinky with a giant flesh wound laying on the side of her cave and Heidi just flitting about like nothing happened :( I now know you can't really introduce even female bettas into other female bettas tanks cuz of territorial issues. You need to have a harem all introduced at once if you want to do that, in a BIG tank.

Heidi Fleiss though, just totally disappeared when I was changing tanks. They were all in their little mason jars, but when it was time to put them back in their tanks, she was not in her mason jar. I looked EVERYWHERE and couldn't find it. She couldn't have jumped out. I dont know, most likely I probably poured the water a little too heavy handed and she went down the sink drain? I was very excited about having goldfish but they didn't do well. I got a 2.5 gallon tank but that was probably much too small for 2 gold fish. I later read that goldfish produce a lot of waste and that they need a big tank (10 gallons). The tank I bought had a filter, but they didn't last long. It was sad because I really wanted them. A 10 gallon tank is pretty large just to have two gold fish. Or maybe the place where I bought them was selling me sick fish. The experience was very discouraging. Maybe betta fish are better.
April 13, 2013 9:20 PM - petebklyn

I was wondering how Heidi Fleiss could have disappeared.

Well as of now it's an unsolved mystery. A cold case, kinda. Betta fish originally came from Thailand. They lived in shallow mudprints of big animals like elephants and water buffalo. She could theoretically be living anywhere. But yeah, most likely the little female killer fish is dead. Karma's a bitch like that.

Poor Dudley has seen so much fish drama rama in the last 5 months. He keeps his cool though. Pinky Dinky II is great (she looks like like the original pinky) and Charlize Theron "Charlie" is a GINORMOUS male version with a pretty silk purple pink satin tail of the Dinky's...

When/If Jamie Lee dies, I am going to get a filter and air bubbler for that tank and get a totally different kind of fish. Or a frog or something. Whatever can live in a 2.5 gallon tank on it's own happily.

NO GOLDFISH though. Some are really cute, but it would be mean, no. Dont they all get super big if you take care of them?! they only die little when they are not taken care of? I am thinking of maybe a catfish! Or a shrimp or snail.

Too bad I don't have pinworms anymore like I did as a kid, I could just dip my butt in the tank and have a school of pinworms swimming around!

How do you know that he opened it and didnt hit start? Maybe the dryer isn't working properly.

Cuz I am not a moron and know how long it takes to wash and dry clothes, I am always on time, I am respectful to the other people who have to share the laundry room. He was just a moron. Whatever, the look I gave him will have him screaming back home to mommy about how to do his laundry and she will tell him to either go to a fluff and fold place or just fed ex it to her and she will overnight it back to him.

Sorry, I've noticed i've been getting a little testy these days. The biggest perk, sadly that I have ONLY recognized as of last summer, is that I am 1/2 an hour from the beach from where I live on the subway! I piss on my own face metaphorically for not having taken advantage of it the prior 3 years. THAT is the perk I get from living here. half an hour to the beach and half an hour to work! That is my IDEAL! Yet people think ammenities are things like beer gardens (overpriced shit filled with strollers and cry babies and dads wearing slings), organic food markets (again, overpriced shit), yoga studios (hello, you can't make poses where it's looking like you are going down on yourself at HOME? Hells I try to do that all the time!), and other such non sense. And people in this neighborhood get uglier and uglier :( I miss walking around a neighborhood and seeing attractive people, but in this neighborhood not so much. At least I work in SoHo and, while it's a mega shitshow, you get people from EVERYWHERE so there are always attractive people walking around. There is none of that in park slope. Who wants to live in a neighborhood where everyone you see you think is fuggo?!

Edited at April 13, 2013 11:23 PM
April 13, 2013 11:26 PM - Deleted
and yeah fugly is totally subjective, I realize that. It just seems there is a higher concentration of ugly people in park slope these days and almost a 2-3% population who are even remotely attractive (at least to me anyway). Not to mention it's turned into bro-ville and a bunch of wannabe cankle queens so don't even go there saying im just saying this cuz it's a "family" neighborhood. There's a lot of nightlife in park slope these days, but damn, WOOF!

I have been single most of my adult life and have always had to pay full taxes with only the standard deduction.

Yes, I had the freedom to make my own decisions, didn't have to take care of anyone else except my pets, etc., etc.

I also had no one there to help me when needed......no one to help me move a piece of furniture, no one to pick me up if my car broke down, no one to take me to the hospital and sit by my side, no one to help me make a difficult decision.

People like to point out that because they had children, they should get a break.

But, when do I get my break?

Those who got all of the tax breaks for having children, also reap the benefits of having those children.....I do not......even though I paid more in taxes so they could pay less.

When they get old and need help.....they can call upon their children......to drive them to the doctor, take them to the store, help them move......who do I call?

Yep, I call their children......and I have to pay them a pretty penny for everything they do for me.

Need a ride to the store? $$$ Need help moving? $$$ Need someone to mow the yard because I hurt my ankle? $$$ Need someone to shovel the driveway when I have the flu? $$$

I know some married couples, who when one of them dies.....the other is nearly helpless.....because their spouse always took care of the money, the car, the yard......I, on the other hand, know how to do all of these things.

My point?

There are down sides and perks in all of our choices.....remaining single, remaining childless, having children.....regardless.....I think we should all pay a flat tax without deductions because of the lifestyle we choose.

TipsDo not put the fish in the freezer or in cold water before incapacitating it. Unlike humans who fall asleep and die from the freezing temperatures, fish can actually feel the ice crystals forming on their skin causing immense pain and suffering before death. Fish do not pass out from cold as humans would and tend to live for hours at extreme temperatures before death.
Do not flush the fish down the toilet. Not only can this spread disease to local waters if the fish was ill, but the fish could still be alive and could regain consciousness in the sewer waters.

I don't know... I am trying to find ways to humanely put Jamie Lee down :(

Wait, wasn't that how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started!? Some idiot dumped turtles down the toilet and they wound up being the Ninja Turtles in the sewars!?!?

There's a cat up the street (well down the street) that people feed all the time (which I find nasty!). Should I fry Jamie Lee up put a little spices on him and feed it to the cat? Gah! I can't deal with putting down another pet, but it's not right he is up like this, he is not having a good life at ALL.

I also want four perfect fishies in my tanks, not three fun ones and one lame one. I don't get paid for this you know, it's not like teaching special ed kids!

I am not going to fry up Jamie Lee and feed it to the cat up the street. I was just throwing it out there as an other worldly possibility. Would I like to fry up jamie lee and feed it to the cat up the street? Well, perhaps. Will I do that? um, no. The fish is sick, I think. Or it's just beyond bizarre. I don't know. You're making a really big deal out of this acting like im some sorta Scale Baby version of Casey Anthony. I am not. I Love my fish; just want to do the best thing for them. I have no clue if Jamie Lee is suffering or not. Perhaps I'm a frickin weirdo, who knows. I did keep stuffed animals until I was 14 and when I came home one day my grandparents threw them all out! And whatever you might think of how the Jamie Lee saga will end, it's irrelevant. All my fish have been saved from a chain pet store that keeps them in tiny little cups. MOST of them never get bought; they are discarded. The come from breeding farms. (they are NOT btw goldfish that are injected with dye as Pete said yesterday :-/ ). Don't question how I raise my fishies. They are well taken care of. I'm sorry I even brought up the whole Jamie Lee sickness issue, apparently I am a monster.

Yes, I am a total weirdo and in my peabrained mind I am the host of the show Tanks Of Love. deal with it! I don't hate on the other weirdo things people do that they enjoy!

And with fish, as boring as they might seem to some people as pets (which I totally understand), you can project shit onto them that is amazing. It's like having stuffed animals all over again!

I really don't see the harm. I'd be a real grouch without them. Plus fish poop is like miniscule and you rarely ever see them poop or have to deal with on the spot like you have to do with dogs. I can't believe I spent years picking poop up off concrete :-/ The whole thought of dogs now seems grody to me. What a difference a few months make. I totally thought I was a "dog person". Um no, they are gross.

The psychic part of my brain vibrationally just felt Duke calling me a bitch. I don't think I am being a bitch. I just don't find dogs all that interesting anymore. Is that bad? Plus every single person in my neighborhood seems to have a dog these days. Most of them supposed "hardcore" dogs like pitbulls and shit. CORNY! Moonfaces with pitbulls :-/ This is why I was in a state of anomie when I lived in Harlem with Duke.

Everyone at work has pictures of their family posted at their desks, I have pictures of all my fishes (and Duke) and I say, if you think it's weird, than that's YOUR problem, not mine.

Okay, for real headed to the beach now.

FYI: I no longer identify as an Autosexual. That was severely limiting my psychic space. I am now literally a freesexual (i.e. whatever happens, happens). The Universe always provides when you free your mind, and that is what I am doing. I will not poopoo the idea of meeting new people and the possible sexual situations that might happen. I am however, NOT looking to get laid or anything, just freeing my mind and not pigeonholing myself into the weird ass world of autosexuality (omg, autosexuals are FREAKS! oh, and like 99% of them are fugly as sin. Yeah let's claim a sexual identity and be all nazi-like about it because no one will sleep with you... okay!)

One more thing, Part... You seem to know the entire Jamie Lee story. It's not like my posts are little blips and blops where you can't help but accidently read them. They are a little longish (sorry) so clearly you are reading them. If you don't want to hear about Jamie Lee than don't read my posts. Whenever I see a long ass post by Dave I scroll down knowing full well it's something that will raise my blood pressure or put me to sleep.

I'll make everyone a deal here though. I will stop talking about my fish from here on out, like I had to do that on Facebook. People have no problem cramming you wall with pictures of their human babies, but oh yeah when you do it wish fish it's creepy and spammish :-/

So I will stop talking about them from here on out. I will write about them in my journal, which I am having a hard time starting a new one because my last one (the last 5 years of my life) has gone missing as well. I can't find it :( I PRAY TO GOD no one stole it or that I left it somewhere. Embarrassing cuz I am fully candid in my journaling, much like here I guess.

I'll shut up now. My brain races at the speed of a lambourguini sometimes. The sun and the sand and the ocean should slow me down a little.

Rant, feel free to skip.

So, as you know Juan has been in a rehab facility for three weeks/two days. I have heard NOTHING from his two daughters since prior to that. They never acknowledged the text I sent during the move (the 5 other people who received the same text did). On Friday they posted on FB how people are forgetting them. How no one is calling and asking them how THEY are. How people forget they are part of the family too.

I believe I have posted updates 3 times on FB (Thanksgiving, XMas, and the release from hospital). I assume the fact that my FB friends (family only and a handful of life friends) all sent love and prayers has annoyed them. Their rant on Friday got two responses. If anyone did call to ask them how their Dad was, they wouldn't be able to answer. They don't ask how he is, don't call, they feel THEY are not getting shown the love. Ugh, done, done, done!!!

Carry on. I'm finally getting a haircut today. Its all about ME for the next two hours!!!!

You know would be nice? If the government sent Thank You letters to people every year or so for paying back their student loans on time. Even credit card companies, and all other debts. It would be awesome to get a thank you notice in the mail; it would make lots of people feel good for paying back their debt. You get nasty notices when you DONT pay, but how about some nice thank you letters when you are good and DO pay? Show some love, and people will be more willing to part with their money.

On the two cards that I have where I have zero balances I usually buy some random thing or two each month and then pay it off. Im sure they are chary of that behavior, but that's not a bad thing to do right? I think it helps credit scores. I just have to get the other two cards back to zero! gack! But both of those are zero percent interest for a year or so now, so should be fine. I use my other two cards that do charge interest to purchase random things like at the supermarket and then just pay them back.

I have 22 dollars on my GM card towards a new card though LOL. Why they even gave me that card even though I told them I dont have a driver's license is beyond me.

I gave a little speech to R on the importance of beauty parlors to women. He told me that wasn't true for everyone. Me, maybe. But I really do think that if it isn't universal, it comes close. It is am imposition of order on disorder, beauty on the natural messiness of life; beauty parlors provide care, attention, humor, understanding and solidarity among the world of women.

Beautifully said, Donatella! I cringe whenever I see sites like brownnoser and other new bruuuueklen-centric blogs cheer when a nail shop or a hair place closes down only to open up a lame moonface bar or restaurant.

Bizarre to feel this way, but I feel like white people just want to FEEL good. Black people like to LOOK good. Hispanics and asians, well sorry who knows? our country is sadly divided on a black/white issue since birth.

No one likes to really talk about the bizarre racial issues we have in this country, and we have MAD racial issues, even more today in 2013 than we did in like 1913.

Yes, Arkady. Thank you. rf posted it on Friday. From what the article says, we are poised correctly and defensively. Have attorneys, engineers and homeowners engaged. For us, the big disappointment will be the loss of most of our lot-line windows. A fact that we were aware of through the disclosures of our offering plan, but had still hoped to avoid.
April 14, 2013 11:38 AM - Partridge
No, Snaps. They showed us their plans. When they become final, I will know what area is available to me to open up and I'll see if it seems worthwhile.

Lot-line windows are considered temporary at best. The owners of the adjacent property would be free to place a shed, plant a tree or erect a fence if they were to choose to do so.

And that is the difference between adopting a child and "adopting" a tropical fish. (Wow, does that sound absurd or what???) No one is allowed to adopt a child (maybe different if the child is a relative) without repeating 1000000 times: when you adopt a child, you are not rescuing him/her.

Enough said on that subject lest Rob prattle on and on about how I always bring up my child and where she comes from, into every OT topic. Pot, please meet kettle.

Rob, I just put this into my search engine and came up with much information: "What to do with a sick pet fish?"

So fish can become ill and could be suffering just as any other being and not be able to communicate that suffering. I'd be tempted to phone my Vet.

Just got out of the shower. Sorry, RF, but your child is nor more or less important than my fishes. Sorry! At least my fish arent tax eaters! I think people who dont have children should not have to pay into the tax system for schools and stuff. Not a popular opinoin, I know, but still, the current set up is SO unfair.

What's also unfair is that million dollar brownstones pay like nothing in property taxes :/ And the only reason those brownstone owners DONT pay their fair shair of taxes is cuz cuz we live in a city with so many people who are literally flat out dumb and stupid and breed more of them to support. Nothing wrong with this? err...

Happy Birthday, Montrose!

CGar, Get Well Soon !
April 14, 2013 1:03 PM - rf
Yesterday we went to visit SUNY Stony Brook with friends, a mom and kid from MA. My kid got to drive more than half of the trip, after we crossed into Nassau County and on the way home until we left Nassau County. On the way home. someone cut her off and she did very well, using the emergency lane on the right to avoid what would have been a really nasty accident.

Last night I had a dream that I was babysitting 2 kids, one around 2, the other around 5. The 5-year-old was extremely reckless and, after setting a terrible example for his brother by going down the slide head-first (and his baby brother did too, I couldn't catch him fast enough, and the baby landed on his head at the foot of the slide), wanted to play on the 4 feet of striped pavement between the bike lane and the car lane.

No wonder I woke up with a migraine! The older they get, the bigger the danger.

Kazoo, almost a year ago I found a support group through the NYC Alzheimer's Assn. (thank you Donatella!) Then in November I couldn't go anymore because of the day of the week when I had a more important commitment. I am thinking about looking for a new group on a different day, even though it's not my dad who has Alzheimer's and I don't feel nearly as affected by my stepmother who, after all, is not my mother (they married when I was in my early 30s after my mom died). Every person in my old group felt the weight of caring or managing or watching out for the parent, sort of the opposite of raising a child since the expectations and outcome are so different. I still get emails from the old group and 3 or 4 of the parents have died since I left. I think it's time for me to find a new group. Maybe you could find something similar in CA? The ones here meet every other week or every 3rd week with a social worker present and are free due to state or city grants. This time around it feels very lonely making decisions for my dad and stepmother.

I've been an orphan for quite awhile ...but lot of friends who still have parent or other elderly relatives dealing with it every day. Seems older the person makes it...the more complicated the situations. Draining and you know not going to get better.
April 14, 2013 2:47 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
So true, LP. But I remember still very well.

Years after my father died, I had dinner w/ a friend who knew me through the years of his illness. She was taking care of her father, who had had a bad stroke, around the time of our dinner. And she told me she had no idea of the SCOPE of what I was coping with back when my father needed care. But few do, in my experience, unless/until they have done it.

Does anybody know a notary public?

New tenants have to fax Con Ed a notarized lease to open an account. I wrote a rider in the lease giving them a discount on the rent in exchange for their paying the community electricity. They agreed but Con Ed needs the lease and rider notarized. Major PIA since we need three people present to have it done and so we need to schedule. I found someone = a realtor - around the corner who was willing to do it Sat am as a favor, but tenant couldn't do it. I just need a place where we can make an appt together or just show up and make sure a notary is around. Annoying.

Yes, Six, regarding St. James, there are a lot of Civil War era frame houses on St. James between Gates and Greene. I was looking at a little brick house to buy on St. James between Gates and Fulton and it is not so interesting. What a story. The place was owned by a really strange and paranoid guy who lived there with his family. The place was a disaster and housekeeping was squalid (understatement). I asked my brother (then NYFD Batallion Chief) to take a look at it re structure as a favor to me. He showed up with official car, his driver and in uniform and I thought the guy was going to have a stroke. My brother and I both learned something - my brother about how even though it was a personal favor to me on a break between jobs, his OFFICIAL car, driver, uniform scared the crap out of the owner. He was slime though, if I can be judgmental. His daughter was in a room with an oxygen tank off from school due to asthma. And the house was filled with animal filth, feces, grime, insects, filthy beyond your imagination. No wonder the poor kid couldn't breathe.

Six, that might be the house next door. The one that I was interested in was a nice brick with stained glass windows. It had an inverted V shaped peak on the facade. Last I looked it was ok. It was a very interesting house and it had a sister house next door, same exact design. We (my brother and I) made a big mistake in his showing up with his regalia and entourage. The owner went from weird to off the charts hostile. Then I thought Screw it. This guy is a nut; there are other houses.

The Avenues are pretty spectacular, Six. Some of the houses fell into pretty serious disrepair during the bad old days but Clinton and Washington Avenues have some extraordinary mansions. But the variety of architecture in this neighborhood really attracted me; I was fantasizing about owning something here long before I did. I had this idea of buying a brownstone which seemed almost crazy to me, but my old neighbor, friend and long time brownstone owner convinced me that it was doable and also preferable to owning a coop. He forgot to mention the minor issue of maintenance but I was interested in this neighborhood.
