GM.

I was drifting off to sleep last night but I think we were paid a visit by Gemini10. Can anyone else verify? Then a bit later... I could have sworn I saw Heather!!!!! Strange but happy sightings.

Tonight's the night to look for them again.

Have a good trip, randi.

Where's rob? Here is a story about a woman who quit an office job to be a mermaid.

Randi...if you are near Ginza, go to Hibiya Park. Its a very nice large park and there are a lot of stray feral cats there, all wearing bells so they dont devour all the birds.

Plus, its right near the Imperial Hotel which, if you remember, will make you a perfect soft, runny scrambled eggs!!!!

I cannot. One of the things I've never mastered is analysis of banks, insurance companies and other finacials. But if I were to take a stab at it without even looking:

1. There were probably a lot of writeoffs in 2010 & 2011, thus bottom line losses. operating profits/losses may have been different

2. The mortgage market was on fire last year and still is so they probably actually made real money last year and maybe even enough beyond accumulated prior year losses but I don't even know how that ccounting works with something like FNMA.

3. The stock has been very volatile and it's not even certain that the company will remain a publicly traded entity

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/04/01/nancy-hatch-dupree-s-quest-to-save-afghanistan-s-history.html

"The two got off to a bad start: she left her manuscript with him, and when she returned to pick it up, found he had annotated it: “Adequate, but nothing original.” “Dr. Dupree,” Nancy said, “I am writing a guide book and I’m happy you’ve found what I’ve written adequate. This is not a doctoral dissertation, and there is no need for it to be original.” So saying, she spun around and headed for the door.
“Hey, wait a minute,” shouted Dupree at the retreating figure. “Get back here.”
The two soon began an affair that scandalized Kabul. Both Louis and Nancy were already married; and it didn’t make the affair any more palatable to a deeply conservative society when the first Mrs. Dupree paired up with Nancy’s ex: “We were the first to have an affair,” she maintains. “They were the first to get married.”

So . . . Malcolm Smith, Dan Halloran, a handful of City GOP party leaders, including one who lives in Rockland County, plus the Mayor of Spring Valley. I thought Wayne Barrett nailed in on WNYC this morning -- it was a conspiracy to nowhere. The most that the bribes would have gotten Smith was a line on the GOP mayoral primary ballot. But what was the theory about how Smith, a black democrat state senator from Queens, was going to win the GOP primary? What analysis did Smith do that led him to think the bribes -- assuming he got away with it -- would be worth it?

Incidentally, the reason Smith needed the party leaders was that, during the height of the red scare days of the late 1940s, congress enacted the Wislon-Pakula act, which was enacted to get Vito Marcantonio out of congress by making party leaders the gatekeepers for non-members to enter party primaries.

Someone convinced me last night what I needed to do for my seemingly endless illness is drink a hot toddy. I don't think that Smith's plans were all that far-fetched (his ethics, of course are another matter). As Bloomberg demonstrated, getting the Republican mayoral nod is way to do an end run around the democratic primary and its pitfalls. Couple that with the paucity of black candidates, and it might have worked.

The weakness in that plan for Smith is getting the likely GOP primary voters to pick him over, say, Lhota and Catsimitides. I don't think he had a snowball's chance in hell of making that part work. The rest of it, of course, makes sense (but for someone else), which is why he tried to go that route.

This line from the interview says it all (at least to me). It is Su explaining why Williamsburg shouldn't have been rezoned from industrial to residential:

" It really gets under your skin, the experience of really being around these places, walking around a bay and seeing people making cardboard boxes. I think they should have been supported."

So friggin patronizing. Yes, that's right, in the year 2013, people should be making cardbord boxes in New York City so Su could get a tingle up her leg. They should serve as a backdrop in her life.

Well, actually, dh, she also said that the people who go in and buy houses and fix them up are also not to blame, only the the developers and the people who come in and pay the much higher market price later. Which is silly because by the time the market prices are up, the change has already happened. It's not just what dave said and what benson said, it's also that she doesn't want to own any part of having created the conditions for the boom in the first place.

They should have been supported... as long as those cardboard box makers weren't getting in the way of her renting an industrial space formerly used to make cardboard boxes. Because, you know, artists need that space. How is she a professor at Princeton, what is that, an MFA adjunct gig?

MM, it would seem that you as well as all those who voted for Obama BY A VERY SLIM MARGIN, just don't get it. We cannot spend forever, tax people at higher and higher rates, not rationalize Medicare and SS and GIVE LOANS TO PEOPLE WITH BAD CREDIT!!!!

It doesn't take rocket science to figure this out yet it alludes all of the people on the left side of the bell curve and the over educcated elitist liberals like yourself.

I wish we still had the Pony Express dibs,
maybe then I could get legiongirl a passport.

I went to renew her passport last week at a post office in Brooklyn.
I get there early and there's one guy on line, nobody else there. There are two clerks behind the window.
When I walk up to the window with my paperwork, before I even say hello, the guy asks if I have an appointment.
I say , "No, I didn't know you needed an appointment."
He says, "Yeah, new rule, you have to call that number there and make an appointment or you can pay me $60 more now for expedited passport service".
I say, "well, can I just make an appointment with you for like 15 minutes from now since there's nobody else here?"
He says, "No" (with a self-satisfied look on his face that tells you he's mastered his courses in Bureaucratic Moron).
I say, "well, let me call right now then and find out" (the number is busy and won't pick up for 10 minutes of trying).
I go back to the guy and ask him why I can't just hand him my paperwork now without an appointment when there's nobody here and he's the one that would be doing it anyway if I paid $60 dollars for "expedited service"?

He gives me a blank stare and tells me to call the central number and make an appointment because that's the new rule.

I lean in close to his glass divider and tell him " This is why the U.S. Post Office is going bankrupt, because people like you can't do a simple job!"

Then I left.

Dave, I love how you ALWAYS bring up the "slim margin" crap. Obama won by more of a margin than Bush did in his second term, and we won't even mention that Bush LOST the popular vote in his first term. Yet Bush had a "mandate" on his second term, and Obama only gets the "slim margin" excuse, as per the right. Funny how that works, depending on whether or not you won. Oh - in spite of the "slim margin" HE WON. That's all that counts.

CGar, I can't post over there but agree with you on the front parlor. It stages and photographs surprisingly well but the space is pretty useless. Better to have double closet toward the back of the, what to call it, overgrown foyer and have pure open space toward the front. That little 7x7 sitting room in the front is cute but pointless.

My thoughts exactly, Slopey. There are plenty of houses where the front door essentially opens into the parlour, which makes nice use of the space. This layout just guarantees that 1/2 of the parlour floor is wasted/not used. And it does stage well, to the point that I hadn't paid attention to it being only 12.5 feet wide.

Yes, actually both the little room and foyer are wasted. The foyer isn't quite a room and the little room isn't quite usable as anything. So that's 60% of the parlor floor useless in a house so narrow it has no square footage to spare.

"Like any other 22-year-old Floridian, Eric Ducharme loves to swim, except when he dives into the water, he trades his swim trunks for a floppy tail."

Glad you guys had fun. I hope to make the next one.

Delepp, I visited Austin, almost had a job there that would have been awesome. (Although they laid everyone off less than a year later, so phew.) But the thing was, Austin itself was not awesome. It was basically Fresno with more food trucks, which everyone was way, way too excited about. I know a lot of ex-New Yorkers that live there, in suburban parts of the city (there are not other kinds of parts of the city) that are bisected by gigantic highways, and 2 miles walk from the nearest store, which is in a strip mall. Add to that the fact that it is usually too hot to walk and that everyone develops horrible cedar allergies.... and are smug... and it basically sucks. I would not believe the hype. If you want cheap real estate, go to Pittsburgh.

Re: passports--affadavits work, age of kid doesn't matter. And the main branch of the Brooklyn library (which still hasn't been sold to developers) is open on Saturdays and does not require an appointment. We went there with the moppet last year for a renewal and it took like five minutes.

I'm home too!

What fun! Everyone in such good moods. Happy to see you all. Even you, Benson! Sorry about the Eva/Partridge switcheroo on you. It was just so easy!

Gossip...
Dave felt me up and I enjoyed it. He was rather soft and ultra touchable tonight as well.

M4L, your brownies were very tasty, BH offered pepper that he would make sure the container was empty before she left...

And dona, you DID rest today, right??!

Oh BOO. So lots of people went? I thought most people couldn't make it and the only people who were going were Dave and DH (my two tax accountants). I was thought it would be uncomfortable going to a meetup where the only people who showed up were the people who did your taxes. Would be like an H&R Block Off Topic meetup. Akward. Oh well, glad you people had fun. Next time!
