Good call on the averna. Have a bottle at home and have been taking some nips here and there. I like amaro nonino better but it's like twice the price.

Yea averna is interesting. Nice vermouth substitute in a manhattan.

Nonino is gooooood. Little sweeter and has a mellow anise kick to it. It's like 50ish for a bottle tho which is sorta steep.

A friend of mine believes the following formula should be used in deciding what is the lowest age that is appropriate for a guy in seeking out a woman: take your age, divide it by two, and add seven years. Seems to work from age 18 to about 70. After that, take whatever you can get!

"take your age, divide it by two, and add seven years. Seems to work from age 18 to about 70"

I suppose as you get closer to the far end of that scale, you'll need to add some money to that equation to make it work.

I always wondered what the old ballers talk about with their 22 year old trophy wife. Sure, I can appreciate eye candy as much as anybody, but I would have no idea what to talk about with someone that age - just at such a different place in life.

Then again, maybe that's why I'm not a baller. If you have to ask the question, you just don't get it, I suppose.

Ok I patched and sealed a water damaged ceiling this morning and did some last minute cleaning of things the cleaning lady missed. I flipped out a little when she put all the books going into storage into the 2nd floor hallway. I need to take them back down and put in the car. But the cleaning lady was a huge help. Now I have an important business lunch. I have to find my clothes. This apartment looks like a set of hoarders.

yeah, i've got mint flavored 4mg. they don't taste great, but it's not terrible either. and it gets the job done in times of a true nicotine fit. can't be picky though...got em for free from my doc a while back. never argue with free.
March 1, 2013 1:06 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
i guess when i read the word 'lozenge' i was thinking more along the lines of a candy-type coating or something similar to a cough drop. this is more along the lines of a huge dry pill.
March 1, 2013 1:07 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
when i finish these (have a ton of em - this will take a while) i wanna move down to the 2mg. target has a cherry flavored 2mg lozenge. may try that. only $25 for 72 lozenges.

i don't even bother to let the 4mg fully dissolve. i give up after 40 min or so and then spit it out. i suppose that's a good sign that i don't need that much of it to get my fix. and i only use about 3 or 4 of them a day.

Arkady, I used to be good with PowerPoint but now, need to figure out where everything is in the 2010 office version and I've forgotten how to do those fancy graphs - ie those waterfall charts

Right, M4L. I learned it mainly so that art directors couldn't tell me, "That can't be done."

M4L- I did tons of them when i worked for the first responder organization. Did all our teaching materials in PowerPoint and flash. I love powerpoint but some parts of it make me crazy. Hate the new office with that stupid ribbon.

Back in my white shoe days several of us associates had to create a PP slideshow for a partner who wanted to use it when he advocated (really a mix of browbeating and pleading) before SEC folks that a client's former employee's trading strategy was "hedging" and not "speculation." He kept saying, "can you give me a slow build? I want a slow build." He was happy when the slideshow had all kinds of charts where the lines crawled across the screen, bars faded in or grew, etc. He really didn't care what it said (he was going to say what he said no matter what) -- he just wanted iot to look cool. It was a new toy, then (this was late 90s).

Randolph: obama PWNS the GOP....

"At a time when our business has finally begun to get some traction, hiring new workers, and bringing jobs back to America, we shouldn't be making dumb, arbitrary cuts to things that businesses depend on and workers depend on like education and research and infrastructure and defense," Obama said. "It's unnecessary, and at a time when too many Americans are still looking for work, it's inexcusable....As long as the sequester is in place, we'll know that that economic news could have been better if Congress had not failed to act," Obama said. "And let's be clear, none of this is necessary. It's happening because of a choice that Republicans in Congress have made...They've allowed these cuts to happen, because they refused to budge on closing a single wasteful loophole to help reduce the deficit," he continued. "As recently as yesterday they decided to protect special interest tax breaks for the well-off and the well-connected, and they think that that's apparently more important than protecting our military or middle class families from the pain of these cuts."

I waited yesterday for Verizon who never showed up. They didn't call either. This was to move my land line. Supposedly there was some problem at the central location with the work they had to do there before coming here. (?????) And they are kindly rescheduling for March 11. (how's that for customer service?) After multiple calls with increasingly unhelpful and confused people, I reached a person in installations who.......apologized. That was gratifying. It takes effort not to add to the general confusion, violence and chaos in the world. I tried to be civil, but wasn't too successful. "You wanted a PHONE installed?" "No, I wanted an overhead FAN installed."

I wish I had better PowerPoint "skills". I bought a book to improve my slides, but I really never graduated to the really great images and graphics that work. I also really believe that PowerPoint is badly misused. It is a boring and imprecise tool. And often it is a crutch for the speaker, which generally doesn't work well. The worst is when the audience is trying to listen and read slides simultaneously. This is bad. Having a good talk with supporting images work best.

I think I've mentioned before that I used to give classes on how to write speeches w/ support. I'd do a build of 8 points - embedded would be a slide that said, "If you're reading this, raise your left hand." Meanwhile I said, "If you're listening to me raise your right hand." 85% were reading & 14% were listening & there were always a few wise guys who raised both. If everything you're saying is on the slides, why not just give out booklets? Most ideas can be expressed as images while data can be done on hard copy for 'take home'.

Hey Rob! How are the fish doing? I've got a female betta too, her name is Rex. Also have a couple of rummy nose tetras, and a couple of really cool snails. If you have a filter and snails, you don't really have to clean the tank much. You really shouldn't clean the whole tank either, just remove about 1/4 of the water. If you have filter, snails, and live plants, the ecosystem will take care of the rest. You just change out the 1/4 water every week or two to keep the balance right.

Gross woman on the train farted right in my damn face this evening, and I am convinced it was on purpose because she LAUGHED right before it happened!

March 1, 2013 8:09 PM - Arkady
It probably happened as a result of her laughing, not a cause.

Hmm, perhaps. If you fart when you laugh tho, you have mad issues. Finished cleaning two tanks. Jaime Lee has a mancave now. He loves it.

Six, I read Tuffte's book after reading that introductory article on PowerPoint. Then I attended his course. He is a sculptor and graphic artist and is an expert on expressing complex ideas graphically. His thinking is that PowerPoint generally presents information in low resolution environment. This means that you look at a page and most powerpoint slides contain very little information and the brain doesn't work this way. Powerpoint has too little information and people get bored, very bored reading slides. He believes also that powerpoint slides and bullet points do not emphasize logical links between ideas. His specialty is showing complex ideas graphically.

dh, is that your new look for spring? ha!

Powerpoint is beyond retarded. And, hmm, im sorta digging that flowey coat.

It's very Betta fish fin-like, but with an urban edge.

On the news this morning I saw a segment about these new high heels, but they dont have heels... the shoes are made to look like hooves of various animals. Creepy x 10000 and looks like they would be insanely hard to walk in. Regular high heels are hard enough to walk in, these look scary as hell.

Looks like a hipster version of an Eton jacket.

Versions of those have been around for a while, rob. I agree, they look malformed & eerie.

I'll have to look for his book, Dona. He's right about Powerpoint. Powerpoint is actually better used as a base for talking points by a lecturer, not the be all and end all. that's why, when I was doing PPTs, I made them mulitmedia - they were more like movies than powerpoints. Unfortunately I still had to keep the standard material in, or the course wasn't considered valid by SAFER standards. And the standard SAFER course were powerpoints at their worst. After 9/11, one of the 9/11 Family associations asked me to do a graphical representation for them of the collapse and the remains found. You can pack an entire lecture into one good graphical representation, if you do it right.

Arkady, I have no adequate words for the loss of your fish, Hawk. And you had him for nine years. I am so sorry. It is interesting how Ranger stayed beside him. I keep replaying the day we lost our dog, not tormentingly so, just that it is not easily understood.
March 1, 2013 10:52 PM - Partridge
Goo goo, ga ga.

Just had the most delightful breadcrumb stuffed, baked artichoke at the Red Rose.

Sorry to read about Hawks's departure. Very sad, Ark.
March 1, 2013 10:53 PM - Arkady
Thanks. It's miserable but not as awful as it could be since he'd been failing for a while so I was somewhat prepared.
March 1, 2013 11:09 PM - Partridge
Eva? Are you ok???? It has been too long.
March 1, 2013 11:10 PM - Partridge
Yes, I continue to prepare myself while living with an old dog. 15 plus. loss of loved ones is so heartless.

You've been sleeping all day, that's why. Plus, I'm guessing your new lozenges don't always help with the sleepys...
March 1, 2013 11:31 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
true. very true.

i watched a movie to try and bore myself, but it was kinda cute and i didn't knock out. how come you are still up?
March 1, 2013 11:41 PM - pepper
I have a tremendous mental block against going to bed before midnight. No matter how tired I am. It's kind of fucked up.
March 1, 2013 11:43 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
ooof. that must stink when you have to get up early. maybe a cup of hot tea or a warm shower?
March 1, 2013 11:45 PM - pepper
It does. So I have constructed my life, as best I can, around not getting up early.
March 1, 2013 11:48 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
that's always a good option :-) what about work? do you have a late start time?
March 1, 2013 11:49 PM - pepper
You'll be happy to hear that they seem to have deconstructed yet another piece of what used to be Pacifico today...

Officially, no. In practice, yes.

March 1, 2013 11:55 PM - pepper
I just hope they don't move in to my place.
March 1, 2013 11:59 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
indeed. now that would be bad. if they invade, i'll loan you mr. bu. he'll chase down anything. i can't promise he'd catch anything, but it's worth a shot.

My sister is SO excited to be going to down to south carolina in 3 weeks to see our grandmother for the first time (well the first time since she was a baby), except my grandmother convinced her that her and her boyfriend should stay at her apartment. :-/ There is NOTHING to go where she lives down there, I was bored out of my MIND until I went out walking and found a man made lake, which was mad boring, but at least it was SOMETHING. I think my sister and her boyfriend should get a hotel room in charleston or whatever for the few days they are going to be down there (hells I will be doing that when I go down there in may or june). I dont think she's been out of NJ/NYC Metro area in her entire life so this is a real vacation for her.. I just feel like it's going to be a major disappointment if she stays with our grandmother. Of course I guess they might have a lot to talk about, so who knows, maybe it will be okay. I just think it's a little weird. I kinda got them hooked up talking to each other too and part of me both wishes I didnt and part of me thinks it was a good thing.

I am sure a negligect will now start the weekend OT so my post can be annoyed lol.

So much cleaning and spring organizing to do tomorrow.

Actually, we have a cat. Izzy. He is more an attention whore than anything else, but I like to believe he keeps the rodents away.
March 2, 2013 12:07 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
izzy - great name. perhaps his scent alone will keep the vermin out. good luck! be sure to praise izzy to keep him going :-)

March 2, 2013 12:13 AM - pepper
And rob, you may or may not be right, but I guess your sister needs to make her own mistakes. If it's as dull as you say, she won't make the mistake a second time.

Sleep well.

Pepper, there you go being logical and smart again! :-) Nice advice at 12:13am.

In addition, good luck with your beau!
