Too bad Randi has given up his post-counting hobby.
#11
February 21, 2013 8:22 AM - dibs
I suspect it has been too taxing on his brain what with having to think about baby names on top of post counting

Dh..YOU GOT THOSE TAXES DONE YET????? there will be hell to pay if the refund isn't high enough

dave, are you in the PJs today or going into work? I'm ready to quit my job if I have to work a lot again today. But, I can't have a liquid lunch since I have to log in this afternoon and I have a networking thing tonight. But, I have to go to Park Slope at some point to run a couple of errands - the Countess of Troy is sleeping in your bed next week, and I don't yet have proper linens for her - so thought maybe we could lunch with Mrs. Manson Mingott perhaps and kill 2 of Darwin's birds with 1 stone??? Your thoughts???

Pete, well, mean girls are more prone to offer to have sex - ie when they say "fuck you", all you have to say is "your place, my place, or the restroom here?"

Yes six, but you conveniently forgot to note that he's a Democrat:

dh & Dona....

“Have no fear of robbers or murderers. They are external dangers, petty dangers. We should fear ourselves. Prejudices are the real robbers; vices the real murderers. The great dangers are within us. Why worry about what threatens our heads or our purses? Let us think instead of what threatens our souls.”

Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

I think we missed it again, dh. We need to wait till March. I'll find out and we'll go. It is insane all the gun action around here. By the way, this is (was) on the dl, but the owner at Country Club diner told me that the last shooting (and death) involved all police officers. The provocateur was a rookie police officer, her boyfriend who was killed was a police officer, the killers girlfriend was a 911 operator and there were 5 police officers outside the diner who had attended the killer's birthday party. The owner said he was told by the police not to mention any of this to the media. He did mention it to me however. Not too impressive a performance by the NYPD.

dh, it sort of explains also the community relations "issues" the NYPD has here and the strange lack of information and "assurance" of any kind when I called the station. There is a guy though, who I spoke to eventually. His name is Braithwaite and he is a human being. It didn't change anything but he was articulate and kind, which made me feel a little better. This was after the first shooting in Jan. I would say that on a whole my local experience with the NYPD has not been very good.

Please note regarding Tish James.

Where is she with all of this???? Nowhere to be found. Or heard.
February 21, 2013 10:30 AM - CGar
randi, personally, I think he miscalculated his move in kicking us out. I think he wanted to tone things down, but not totally kill the vibe on the blog, which is what he did. As Slopey has said repeatedly, we'd hang out in the OT, but then go populate all the new threads, which most of us don't do anymore since we're not there. And many of us can't post over there even if we want to because of the disqus problem 2 years into the re-launch.

parents hiring strippers for their kids isn't anything new really. my grandmother hired a stripper for her son's 21st or 22nd birthday. unfortunately i had to be privy to it :-/ it was a little bizarre in that the stripper arrived in a gorilla costume and then stripped out of it. she was also totally fug.

And maybe I should forgive her for bragging for 15 minutes in my friends eulogy at her funeral Mass. Maybe I should. But this gun stuff is SCREAMING out there. It is the old West over here.

dh, I think it would be good to go to the CB meeting with an agenda, like work.

omfg, i think i've found my soulmate in the personal finance forum on citidata...

"Okay, so I've lived in my present state of residence for quite some time now, nearly ten years. I've never filed a tax return because they only allow certain electronic forms and you have to buy software to do it. To file by paper, you need to track down a form and let's be real--I'm busy. Every time I've tried to track down a state form, the library or gov. office doesn't have any. So for nearly 10 years now, I've blown it off.

I don't make much money--never have. I know the state owes me money for the years I haven't filed (but I'm not worried about that). Anyway, they took out nearly $500 in taxes this past year, I've found a form, and they owe me $427 and I want it.

What will happen if I file? Will they suddenly want all of those other tax returns? Will they come track me down? I could produce all of those W-2s if need be, but I don't want to be indicted because I didn't file all of those years when the state owed me like $13 or something meager amount like that.

I knew a state worker once who worked at the Dept. of Revenue and she said that they don't track anyone down unless you owe them big-time, which are usually big businesses and then they turn that over to the AGs office. She said they even prefer small-potatoes earners not to file because they only have 25 people processing returns. I probably should not have believed her. But anyway, I'd like to get this straightened out and avoid jail.

Any advice, suggestions?"

LMFAO. Putting aside that you plathered on even longer than usual today, your Walkabout column about dave was really very good.

Those who think dave hates women should take note: "He told the reporter he didn’t hate women, he loved women, and his female employees and friends loved him for the old curmudgeon he was".

And who could argue with this: "He thought a lot of women whined too much". [Ducking for cover]

"She probably misses the old curmudgeon, a man who lived life on his own terms, said whatever he wanted to, made up a whole lot of mess and enjoyed the chaos that followed".

In Internet slang, a troll (pron.: /?tro?l/, /?tr?l/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[3] The noun troll may also refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted."

Slopey, serious question here about my condo problems.

We have a pivotal if not final meeting with all parties tomorrow -- lawyers, engineers, builder, home owners. Plenty of reports, estimates, summaries. 8x10 color glossies with the circles and arrows...

If the meeting gets derailed, if we don't get a 'number' if they are obstinate, should one of the owners (maybe me) go all ape-shit and cause a little drama? Did I not read hear (from CGar?) that Slopey says there should always be some hysterics at a negotiation?

"Did I not read hear (from CGar?) that Slopey says there should always be some hysterics at a negotiation?"

Actually, I think I posted the other day that that was lechacal's advice. Not really my style and I can't really make it work (nh) unless I am actually really angry. I think your demand should be clear and simple. If you need to have a number or definitive position on something from the other side by the end of the meeting, you may want to consider a clear statement on that at the outset. "Our understanding is that the purpose of this meeting is X and in order for X to happen, we need Y, so I want to make sure that, whatever we discuss, you are prepared to tell us Y and explain how you got there." Go in with your own written checklist on the things you need to hear about, raise, or discuss during the meeting, so you can circle back in a case something was missed and the meeting goes on a tangent. Summarize at the end. "So on issue A we decided 2. On issue B you said you would tell us by next Tuesday. On issue C Mrs. H is calling the contractotr tomorrow and will email us after the call. etc."

February 21, 2013 1:53 PM - Donatella

Oh, what a nightmare. Something NEW to worry about. I googled escolar and found out that though tasty, escolar contain high levels of waxy esters and mineral like oils which cause the following symptoms. To quote an online article on escolar:

"To be frankly and bluntly specific - and I'm sorry for this - consumption of escolar causes explosive, oily, orange diarrhea. People have reported that the discharges are often difficult to control and accidents can happen while passing gas. I personally know someone who ate an escolar steak one night, unaware of its side effects. The next day he was riding the elevator to his office when out of nowhere his bowels unleashed a surprise attack on his pants. As he said later, "Thank God I had my gym bag with me, which had a clean pair of underwear in it." This explains why escolar is also called the "olestra fish" and the "ex-lax fish."

These symptoms happen particularly if you eat more than 6 oz of the fish.

Uh, I think I'll pass (no pun intended). I thought this was going to be about parasites.

Rob, the answer is "obvious" because if someone like dh wants to get involved in his community, renter or not, that's a good thing for him, and the community. Why wouldn't someone want to better where they live? Unless of course, they are like you, who can't see past your own obsessive need to be at the center of your own private universe, concerned only with yourself.

How any of that has anything to do with being "puritanical" I won't even begin to try to understand.

Did you know "tilapia" can be one of almost a hundred different species of fish? Now they are the most popular farm raised fish, but are most famous for being the Biblical fish of the Sea of Galilee. They are mostly freshwater fish, which is why they don't taste "fishy" to a lot of people.

MM, I was just at the Galilee. The fish there is St. Peter's fish, very boney (nh) but tasty grilled. It is not what we call tilapia. Apparently the fish of the multiplication was sardines, which makes it a bit less of a miracle IMHO.
February 21, 2013 2:40 PM - Donatella

A utility guy in San Antonio TX told me that his power plant water filtration system became dysfunctional when it turned 50 degrees. Why? That is cold for the Gulf over there and the Tilapia, which are supposedly native to Africa, go into hibernation at 50 degrees or less. That means they just go to sleep. Float around motionlessly. Thousands of them were pulled into the filtration system causing the plant to have to be shut down.

Stupid tilapia.

There are plenty of decent restaurants without lengthy waits. If we have farmhand with us, waits are a pain. Into my store walks a guy who I recognize from my home block, but who I haven't really met. We wave to each other while walking our dogs.

About 6'4", thin, super-queen. Has a Maltese. Anyway, he starts talking and talking, rather manically about his fashion model career, his dead sister, her flight attendant boy-friend who is now his roommate, brain cancer, hospitals, health insurance, knowing people 'high up', and ORCHIDS!!!

OMG, TMI. I forgot to order lunch. He has a proposition for me...
February 21, 2013 4:03 PM - Slopefarm
Not to mention people who go to concerts etc and just video the whole things with their phones. Do they really go back and watch the footage? And is it so much better to have the crappy phone footage than to have just experienced it?

And, btw, turn the phone sideways, idiot, it makes for a much better picture.

Besides, the most meaningful experiences can't be photographed with a cell phone. And I'm not talking about sex. Those moments where you realize that you are loved by someone, or you are touched by a moment of pure beauty in music, or art, or nature, or an act of kindness or self-sacrifice. Sometimes you could take a picture, even a good one, but it's not the same. The memory of that moment, the ability to recall even a remnant of that feeling, is much better.

"Yet another Brunch Club inside joke that I now look foolish having responded to. ((((Sigh!))))"

There was no Brunch Club inside joke.

DeLepp was dead to me because of the Laytner's comment. Now he's also dead to me for the pull up a chair & ottoman and centrifuge comments.

I did not take the self-imolation comment to be attributed to me; that was Slopey's supposition.

And any "inside" joke that the Brunch Club discusses here is always explained simultaneously here.

And, for the record, the Brunch Club was a term that cobble originated, and though she meant it derogatorily, we embraced it. And, also for the record, others have joined the Brunch Club from time to time, including cobble & BH, Snappy, etson, and Pete & Lesbiman, and others have been invited to join us, including DH, Biff and Slopey.

There's no exclusivity to it. As it happens, the four of us can often find time for brunch on a Saturday or Sunday when dave's in town, while others have prior commitments typically; can often do it impromptu; are often flexible as to time and day; and have few food restrictions and no trouble agreeing on a restaurant, provided they have good Bloody Marys (hold the cilantro).

dh - It used to be a big accomplishment to go to St. Andrew's. One of the kids I work w/ started there this year, though, & is thinking of transferring out. Says the place is full of ne'er-do-wells because the school has been recruiting too many off-shore students to pay high tuition & it's pretty much turned into a party place. He's not a nerdy kid but is serious about getting something out of his education & he's very disappointed.

I've explained this to you 3 times now. I'm sorry if you can't grasp it. Best let it go. I know how much you love to champion the knowledge of Asia by others who have Asian wives or children but you always fail at it in the end. Remember, I've been going to Asia since 1985.

So this semester I have like 180 books to read (in fairness I had read about half of them before the semester begins) for major exams - three days of getting a question in the morning and writing a 10-page paper by late afternoon. The first of these three days was supposed to be next week, and so I've been preparing myself like crazy, getting notes together and so on.

Just saw my advisor today in the dept - he said we would have to postpone to early April because of the various profs' schedules and so on. It does take a bit of the stress out of the situation at the moment, but I was looking forward to having one of the three exam days finished. The other two are in mid-May and inflexible.

It doesn't help that it gives me vertigo just watching it. It's right up there with my commercials I can't stand and are extremely psychologically damaging (the second hated commercial of mine is the cigarette commercial with the lady with no fingers). They used to show it NON STOP. Bitch, im STILL smoking! And such a disingenuous commercial it is, PLEASE you KNOW there were other factors that led to all her fingers being amputated other than smoking. DH, wait, are you going to the 4th ave pub thing? is it next wednesday? I guess I should attend, I can bring you the books I promised you for doing my taxes, but be warned, it's going to be a super heavy duffel bag. I didn't get sick this winter but the past couple of days I am fighting off something. I have a little cold but am dead tired. It must be all the ant-like activity with my move. I have been carrying boxes and small furniture up there for a couple of days. It is pretty tiring. I am supposed to move Saturday but rain/wet snow is predicted. There was a story written in the NYT about a very smart, young college student from a good family who got addicted to ADD drugs including Adderal. Are they amphetamines? He never had ADD but got doctors to write him prescriptions. He used them to study and it seems they are commonly used by students. He got addicted, then exhibited wacky behavior, had a psychiatric hospitalization, then committed suicide. His parents were completely upset about these doctor prescriptions and tried to set things straight but it was too late.

St Andrews is where William and Kate met. Ancient, pretty, mostly rich kids, makes a lot of $$ from recruiting foreign students - probably the highest % of foreign students of any UK university.

Tonight's presentations were pretty interesting. It was the CEO of a Philadelphia oil refinery complex -- Philadelphia Energy Solutions -- talking about the economics of refining oil, railing in huge amounts of crude from North Dakota. The other guy talked about power - Constellation. Interesting.

I felt really strange and embarrassed for the woman who was moderating the panel. She was drunk. It was terrible. Her face was red and she was speaking extremely slowly and she was inappropriately jokey and palsy walsy and flippant and looked hammered. A guy I know came over to me and sat down and whispered, "Who is this person"? She has a consulting company and I have been acquainted with her for years, she never looked like she had a problem before but she was blotto. Wow.

I've shared this story before, but whatever, Ill be a broken record like Dave. I've never EVER been a pill popper (well except for those times with ecstasy but whatever, that's different). My BFF at the time, after I graduated college had a boyfriend who was severely depressed and well flat out weird and all kinds of cray cray. A doctor prescribed him dexedrine (speed) for some oddball reason. who prescribes that these days? this was the early 2000's. FYI he also had electroshock therapy (!) who does THAT!? Anyway his pill bottle was rolling around in the back her car and my friend was like oh take those they are great! So I put like 50 of them (the bottle was ginormous). I was living at home after having graduating college with my grandparents and ugh. MIRACLE PILLS! I went from a funk to getting a job, an apartment in NYC, and a boyfriend like *THAT*! I was kinda just taking them as they would be prescribed too. bizarre. My BFF wound up killing herself 3 months later by speeding a car into a brick wall/ dumpster at like 90 miles an hour :-/ No clue what ever came about with her crazy boyfriend though.

Most sick part of our friendship was that we lived together for a year and she got into coke (and who knows what else), this was my senior year of college and I was about to graduate and I felt like she was kinda bringing me down in many ways, but I loved her in a weirdo kinda way. She came home one night and told me she wanted to have sex with me because she was "just ganged raped at [dealer's] house" I was like omg get AWAY from me (i was totally grossed out. who says shit like that?) She wound up then saying it wasn't really true and she was high as hell. Her father was a cop too! Two months before she killed herself she started saying shit like her father was a molester, but never really said if he molested her. OH and about 6 months to a maybe a year? Not even sure now it was so long ago, her father donated one of his kidneys to her. A friend in common of ours told me the kidney did not take and that was the reason she killed herself. That friend in common, along with another and ex of mine have completely disappeared off the face of the earth and are completely untraceable! The whole thing sounds like a law and order episode! And I have her stupid ass name tattooed on my arm to boot! :-/
Oh, and we also shared the same birthday (different years, 77 me, 79 her). So much bizarro in that story I know, but *raises finger to Pazuzu or God or Jesus or Alllah, strike me down, it's all true). That's how I became the weirdo I am these days. Why I became an ice princess.

Left out one huge part of the whole thing, the friday before the weekend she killed herself we had tickets to a talk show in NYC. It was either Change or Heart or Forgive or Forget (i really cant remember now)... two of our favorite talk shows. I found out at work on Monday and I completely lost it. Had to say I needed to walk outside, and some woman I worked with comes up to me and is walking outside with me and I was like thanks for coming out with me blah blah blah and she says "I was just going out for coffee"... that's probably more of a reason how I became an ice princess.

Part, my aptmt renov was the 1st one where I got involved vs my previous ones were where I just gave the contractor the money to care for everything as it was minor basic stuff and not much money involved. unless one really fucks it up, most renov outcomes are way better than what it was and if one doesn't mind it potentially over-running budget a bit, etc, there's really nothing to stress too much over. again, unless one is a perfectionist or the other..... nah, still not going there

That is a really awful thing for you to go through, rob. It sounds like she was really troubled. I know three people with whom I worked who committed suicide. One got into trouble with his trading; he was depressed anyway but he was second guessing his trading system. He lost his clients' money and he was supposed to be sticking to the system. That happened when I was in Japan. Another guy lost his brokerage clients and had this very high-end lifestyle in Greenwich - not a really nice guy to me. But the one that truly broke my heart was one particular guy I worked with. He was a doll, super smart, but became depressed over a number of serious problems. Another old colleague called me up in Kansas City to tell me that. I was floored. I absolutely loved that guy. It is a tragedy. You wish you could have done something. And you realize what a waste.

I never exactly truly felt that way about her death. Well perhaps I did for a bit during the grieving process. If she killed herself because her body was rejecting the kidney there was nothing I could have done. It's weird how you can just meet one person in life who has the power to completely change your life for the better or the worse. That shit creeps me out these days. I don't trust the power of influence people can have over other people because that power is so insanely big. I don't want to be responsible for anything bad happening to anyone so I keep all my relationships light and make sure they don't progress into anything deep, and I like it when others do the same. There's a lotta damaged people out there who can cause you SO much harm, so I prefer not to even take the risk anymore. (tho to be honest, I don't think I ever really took the risk).

Okay, enought of me using this board as free psychoanalysis (damn, you have no idea how fucked up expensive they are in this city!) and don't believe them when they say they work on a sliding scale. They find out you make more than 20K a year and will charge you full price anyway :-/

Just coming on... 9/11, riding bike over Manhattan Bridge as it went down. Pounding sex, definitely yes.

On a different note, tomorrow is the beginning of exhibiton season, and the Mets have demonstrably rthe worst outfiled in the majors. A far cry from 1999, when the infield of Olerud, Alfonso, Ordonez, and Ventura set the all-time record for fewest errors by an infield in a season. Sad to think that I may have already seen the only Mets/Yankees World Series in my lifetime and the bloody Yankees won.

So, a week from tomorrow I'll be putting some of this paste on my forehead, not because I'm a shit-head, although that's open for debate, but because I'll be in a very hot sunny place, and zinc oxide paste is being marketed a little differently these days....

I remember the 1999 Mets. My first year in the US & I watched them on TV a lot. Really liked Ventura, Olerud, Alfonso (esp). Wasn't a big fan of Ordonez. I have lost touch with it a bit.

9/11 - I was at my then office in Stamford and living on the UES. Came back into the city that night. Felt horrified but a bit detached at the same time - wasn't until a few weeks later that the magnitude hit me.
Week before 9/11 - Was on vaca in Brazil with a buddy. Fell out with him pretty badly then. He was in the WFC on 9/11 Picked up a friendship that may have been lost when I called to see if he was OK.

Oh rob, about Japan. They really view suicide in a different way. Still a tragedy; but people view it as acceptable behavior in the face of major failure, irreconcilable conflict of clashing responsibilities, or unbearable shame. They assume impossibly high levels of personal responsibility and when they don't live up to these expectations (and the expectations of others), suicide becomes an acceptable out. I hate the way they approach this and don't approve but I understand it.

Well, early morning departure for legal battle. Need to get my rest to be on my game tomorrow.

I'll keep annoying you all for a few more days about Wednesday night at the 4th ave Pub, for Mean Girls hosting of the very first ALL PLUSA get together of the year of our Lord, 2013. If nothing else, I am patient, persistent and stubborn. Ignore me at you own peril...

But, in a lot of ways I do like having 4 seasons. If was 80 degrees during the holidays I think i'd be all grossed out and confused by that. But on the flip side, the thought of not having to own any winter clothes fascinates me. I HATE winter clothes, and hate even more how it's 99 degrees indoors in most places in the winter where making wearing winter clothes completely uncomfortable.

I don't remember all of the 1999 Mets, but probably most.
Mike Piazza was the star hitter but a pretty bad catcher (ironic given all the Sam Champion rumors)
There was a chubby Hawaiian dude at LF called Benny Agbayami. He had worked his way up & was popular with the fans.
Trying to remember the pitchers. Al Leiter was their best, Orel Hershiser was there at the time. Benitez was the closer, John Franco the middle relief guy from SI who wasn't that good but was super well loved as a local guy.

if our pitcher were a little better, we would've beat the yanks that year

Subway series was 2000. Think Olerud had moved by then.

So true Rob. Rob, you are waxing philosophical tonight

I may have to change my avatar from the Higgs Boson particle, because I read that it may cause the Universe to blow up in a few billion years. Legion mentioned this a couple of nights ago also.

I remember the Subway Series, the second World Series of my NYC existence. Somehow "Who Let the Dogs Out?" became the Mets' anthem that year.

Suits ending a bit wierd, but fun. I'm in love w Sarah Rafferty, but Meghan Markle is pretty hot!

Hi Donna, became Mets fan in '67 at age ten, while living in the Eldorado Towers on CPW in manhattan. Was travelling to Bklyn Hgts to go to school, and just didn't like the Yankess. Probably have always had an underdoig thing going. Loved Tommy Agee. Moved to Park Slope in '71, to Gramercy Park in '74, then to Amherst Mass for college, LA for 2 years, then to Clinton Hill in 1980 for the next 25 years. Still love the Mets!! Favotite Met of all time? Really hard to choose one, but I do have an autographed Howard Johnson baseball. Three time member of 30-30 club, but then his sholders went bad...

Met didn't have Orel "the Bulldog" Hershiser, they had that guy from Atlanta Braves, Tom Glavine. Prick gave up 7 runs in first two innings on the last day of 2001 (?) season, losing the wildcard spot to some other team, maybe Cardinals? Bastard didn't even look sad. Cobble and I were actually at that game, left in disgust around the 5th inning.

Yeah, Benny Agbayanni became a quick fan favorite, cause he hit something like 5 home runs in his first two games as a Met, after coming up from the minors.

Yup, we're going to Jamaica for a little while for some badly needed decompression.

Yeah M4L, that first 2000 Series game was a killer, Mets blew lead three times. Benitez was a great closer for unimportant games, but when there was pressure, he sucked.

And that stupid non-homerun that just balanced on the foam top of the outfield wall... Arg.....

"Eldorado Towers"

Wow!
February 21, 2013 11:40 PM - BirdnestHead
Yeah, it was cool! Lived on 23rd floor of north tower, with my ownbig bedroom looking out over the oark, with an en suite bathroom. My mom had upgraded to a stockborker for her 2nd husband, so we had some money until the little market dip in '70-71... Were cast out to Brooklyn (so Mom felt, I liked it just fine) 3rd st, tween 8th and PPW. I'm told the rent for the 23rd floor of the Eldorado at that time was a whopping $330/month.
