I think Jindal's comment summed it up: Obama hasn't seen a problem that he doesn't think can't be solved with a new government program.

And what' s with all this push for free preschool for everyone???? Why should the taxpayers pay for government sponsored daycare???? No one went to preschool in my day.

US Chamber of Commerce believs Obama 's new regulatory oversight on cybersecurity is over -reaching, and I believe they are right.

if the government wants to regulate some aspect of technology they can legislate that ALL cell phone chargers must use the same charging port, like in Europe. Why don't they wver do anything truly useful?????

I went to nursery school. Read up on early education and the Head Start program studies. It's pretty amazing to see the life long positive effects early education can have on a person's life.

Real wages have been stagnant or slowly declining since the 1970s. Therefore parents have to spend time at work. Kids gotta be somewhere when parents are away. Preschool or daycare, take your pick.

I dont have any children and, frankly, there are more important things that our government should be spending our money on. also, this is an encroachment on states rights as these issues would be the purview of each state, as he pointed out when he bagan discussing it.

I thought it was Obama's best State of the Union speech, and a great speech all together. It was well written, transitioned smoothly from one topic to the next sensibly, and ended really, really well. Bravo!

Dave, I don't have kids either, but that doesn't mean it's not a good program. The world has changed since we were 4 years old, and kids need an earlier start just to catch up with some of the other kids in the world. I went to pre-school, it was held in a building in a park in Queens. I distinctly remember my Mom walking me there every day. I have no idea if it was private or a city program. We learned how to socialize, but we also learned our alphabets and numbers. I'm sure it helped kindergarten be much easier, and since I went to Catholic school for kindergarten, any help was great, it was not daycare.

A Brooklyn father accused of running several high-end Manhattan brothels that specialized in providing Asian call girls has been indicted, DNAinfo.com New York has learned.
William Thomas, a father of four from Fort Greene, was indicted on prostitution charges as well as 20 counts of money laundering, involving hundreds of thousands of dollars, and for allegedly stealing $10,000 in unemployment insurance, sources said.
Thomas is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Manhattan Supreme Court following his indictment last Friday in connection with operating hooker pads in Midtown, Downtown and the Upper East Side that catered to well-heeled johns, including investment bankers, Wall St. executives and lawyers, willing to spend $200 to $300 an hour.

Some jobs, though filled by Asians, don't get outsourced.

Paid bills yesterday and I got all giddy logging into my accounts this morning. I have not been late on a single payment for anything in over a year! Why did it take me so long to start paying bills online? I’ve only been doing it for a year and it’s helped me immensely to keep track of things. It used to be too easy to stick bills that come in envelopes in my bag, in junk drawers, and in random pages of books currently being read only to completely forget that they exist until OOPS you get another bill and were like omg I totally didn’t pay last months bill! And then I would purchase money orders to pay those bills to boot. In 2011? I know that probably sounds like something an irresponsible person would but do, but oh well, it’s what was happening.

I’ve been paying slightly more to one student loan and I’m so happy to it currently at like 3,200 dollars versus the 5,400 it was before. My goal is to have that loan completely paid off in 2 years. My big student loan I am making the minimum payments on as of now because the rates are super low, even tho it seems like a bigger chunk goes toward the principal of my small student loan that has a higher rate? Why is that? Every month I send in about 60 bux a month… the bill is usually about 57 a month. 14 or so dollars goes toward interest and the rest principal. The rate is 5%. But with my big government student loan (there are 8 of them I believe) with interest rates that range from 2.3 – 3.1? %, but it seems like even though I pay well before the due date only half goes to principal and half to interest. There were times where I sent in a double payment and most of it went to principal, but I can’t really do that very often.

Ooooh the new Survivor starts tonight.

DH, how are my taxes looking!?

Or you could wear it on your head....

A FERAL cat has survived for 19 days with a peanut butter jar stuck on its head.
The Cain family of Bartlett, Tennessee, have fed the cat, which they call Wild Oats, for several years.
They saw the cat several times with the jar on its head and tried in vain to catch it. But after not seeing the cat for a week, the Cains feared the worst.
"I thought she was going to die with that jar on her head," said Tabitha Cain, 25.
They found the once chubby cat on Wednesday, too thin and weak to flee, and used some oil to get the jar off her head. They gave her water and treated her wounds and yesterday she began to eat again.

Preschool and PreK should be paid for by parents! I could be wrong on that though. I'm chary of how much pre-school really makes a different education wise. I remember it was nothing but chocolate milk and naps on cots. Essentially babysitting, though the same could be said for K-12 in some places.

Four year olds are the right age to start learning social skills. Kids who grow up as only children, or with much younger or older siblings need to learn how to socialize with peers, learn how to share, how to do tasks with other kids, ie: teamwork, work on verbalization, take directions, and learn how to learn. Even if it seems like it's mostly fun and games and naps. If you do that in pre-school, kindergarten can be the beginning of real academic learning, and improving on those social skills. If all kids are required to attend pre-school, then they start out with some semblance of equality. Now, the ones that don't are already behind the ones that did, and that's just in kindergarten. Some will catch up, others won't ever do so.

Eva, I think I paid $600/month for a place that was open from 8 to 6. There were some ladies in the neighborhood that took children in but I wasn't impressed with them--mostly park the kids in front of the TV all day. There were some extremely limited-hours programs--a really good one at St. Joseph's College but it was very expensive and the hours were so limited that I would have had to hire a nanny too. And there were reasonably-priced church-based programs that I didn't consider because I thought it would be just too weird for a Chinese Jewish kid growing up in a black neighborhood.

I knew people that had used this daycare (actually the same one that M4L's kid went to!) and it was the beginning of her education as a Chinese-American. It was not perfect, not by a long shot, but it was the beginning of my education as the mother of a Chinese-American too!

Well, yeah I do totally agree with that. But the disadvantage most surely is not across the board for everyone, there are so many other variables.

My favorite pre-k homework assignment was when my daughter had to cut pictures (A-Z) out of a magazine, label them and get extra credit for a double word score (so to speak). She took a picture of my BIL and labeled it "Ugly Uncle".

My nephew is an only child. He's 6 now, but he went to pre-school at 4. He had to learn to play with other kids, and learn to share. It wasn't easy for him, but he's like his father, and is a social animal, so he's fine. Since I don't see him enough, when I do, I'm amazed at how school has helped his vocabulary, his pronunciation, plus his ability to be much more empathetic and social. He was always a polite kid, his parents saw to that, but now he understands why that's important, and he can function with ease around other people.

I don't think we appreciate the social skills aspect of education enough. It's really, really important.

Oh, OK, RF, so it was long days so you could work? I was going to say $600 a month, WOW. I had to do the Nanny for 12 years, about $600 a month (she paid for diapers, food, etc., so that was a great price). Eventually, I got her to agree to just paying her for the days I used her. If we were home, we would never send Evita to her.
February 13, 2013 11:20 AM - dibs
When we were young we learned to play with other kids and to share by playing outside with other kids. It was apparently far less complicated then. We also learned manners and socialization skills from our parents and were taught to read as well.

I learned to read before pre-school by watching Sesame Street and through other means (according my grandmother). No clue how much I really knew though.. Probably a lot less than they though considering I was raised by people with 6th or 7th grade educations.

February 13, 2013 11:25 AM - Slope4Eva
Rob, you are right about the socialization of children. But, in some cases, people just don't have other children in their circle of friends or family. We were very sociable, large families, etc., so my daughter was at a very early age as well. But in school, they can meet other kids and pick who THEY choose to socialize with.

I remember another mother during third grade asked me to make Evita be friends with her daughter. I said, "ugh, sorry, she's old enough to decide who she wants to be friends with".
February 13, 2013 11:26 AM - Donatella

We had an enormous amount of freedom as kids. We went to school, were expected to do well, do homework, I got no supervision at all about that, I just did it and did well as did my other sibs. Then we were set upon the neighborhood, playing with the gang of kids there, in the woods, ballfields, friends' houses, the beach, etc. I talk about this with a friend of mine who came from a family of 10. Our parents couldn't hyperfocus on us so it gave us a kind of freedom that may be thought of as a kind of neglect now.

It wasn't as if my nephew never played with another kid before pre-K, but there aren't a lot of kids near him, he has no relatives on my side with kids, so he only had his cousins on my sister-in-laws side, none of whom are his age. His grandmother took care of him until school, and he actually learned his letters and numbers before pre-k, so academically, he was fine. He played with his one neighbor, a little girl, and with kids from church, but there were never a lot of kids in his life, his age, until school. Now he has lots of friends, playdates, etc.

The best thing about the Little Rascals is that there were no adults around. Just Ms. Crabtree and cranky old people show up every now and then. And the Rascals would do great things by themselves like make go carts and come up with little businesses. They had their own society.

From The Parenting Files:

These past few months since the Hurricane have seen a marked increase in feral cats throughout the neighborhood.
In particular my backyard,
so it came as no great surprise to me this past weekend when LittleLegion and LegionGirl came running in shouting and screaming "daddy, the cat's killing the other cat in the back, hurry, he's killing the other one!".

I'm sitting on the couch reading and I'm thinking this is gonna be messy: " WHAT? " I say,
"who's killing who?"

"...the one cat is killing the other one, hurry , they're in the backyard!"

I run to the back kitchen window which overlooks the backyard and sure enough
I see a big orange cat, with matted fur, on top of another, smaller cat
in flagrante delicto,
on top of the neighbor's garage roof, making all sorts of noises like; "meeeeooowwwwwwww, eeeeooooowowwwwwww"
with the sun shining on them in full view.

I quickly turned down the shades and told the kids:
"...he's killing her alright,
but don't worry, they'll both be ok and back to life by tomorrow."

"...now go play with your Kindles and ignore all the racket."

We had a male Irish Setter and when I was in High School, my father who was teaching at the time arranged a "date" with a female Irish setter owned by another teacher with the purpose of well....having more Irish setters. The big day arrived and nature took its course in the back yard and my sister (one year younger than me) who is a major animal lover and was in charge of the operations associated with this date was pretty upset when they did the deed because according to her (hey, what the hell did I know?) something went very very wrong.

They did not separate. They were just hanging out still, standing with Sean's penis still in the female. My sister was upset and tried to separate them, thinking something was wrong. She was so intense about it, freaking out. She then called the ASPCA to ask about this and they didn't even try to hide their amusement. But patiently they explained that there are barbs on the male's penis which PREVENT it from coming out until a certain period of time has passed. This increases the chances of fertilization. The female did indeed get pregnant and we got the pick of the litter, which we named Seamus and which we sold.

Big biology lesson. Hey you learn something new every day.

DH: I just got this email. Does this affect my taxes? Also can someone translate it into Robglish for me please?

Dear All of you who took advantage of the Transit Chex program this past year,

The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, signed by the President, extended some of the Bush tax cuts that mostly expired Jan 1, 2013. This act re-instated the high caps for pretax deductions like our transit chex.

These changes were retroactive to Jan 1, 2012 which means that those of you who participated in Transit Chex will be getting a small refund of approx $5.00 of your social security and medicare taxes paid out in the form of a refund check from Paychex.

More importantly this will affect your 2012 w-2. Paychex is sending refund checks and corrected w-2’s by Friday and we should have them in hand Monday.

Please use these amended 2012 w-2’s for your tax preparations.

February 13, 2013 3:17 PM - Donatella

She was YANKING them. It was a good thing she didn't get bit.

I am doing my work up here in tenant's apartment. She moved everything out and we'll do a key/security deposit swap Saturday. She left it in pristine condition. Thank you!! I am actually starting to like it. It is so bright here and very quiet and no need to be modest, keeping the shades pulled like downstairs. Also, I spent too much time on the garden floor since the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom down there (upstairs a pretty double parlor) and it is a lot of work to keep that clean. I have concluded that I do not like the garden floor very much; it gets so dirty down there. And it is pretty dark. The big adjustment here will be the loss of storage space.

I think it's already reflected as a pretax deduction in your earnings. dh????
February 13, 2013 3:36 PM - Deleted
Um...

You can deduct most pet care expenses for formally fostered pets. Expenses that relate directly to foster pet care are tax-deductible. You can deduct expenses such as vet bills, boarding, pet food, collars, leashes, medication, cat litter, and toys if they were purchased exclusively for your fostered pet.

In all cases when pet care expenses might be tax deductible, it is crucial to maintain records and receipts of all expenses, particularly if the deduction will amount to more than $250. Although pet care deductions aren't an automatic red-flag for an audit, they may raise your chances of being audited by the IRS, so it is very important to maintain honest and accurate documentation to support the deduction. In many cases, it is best to simply avoid claiming a pet care deduction at all.

Unfortunately, while tax deductions are available for a few pet owners, they are the exception rather than the norm. Pet care generally does not qualify as a tax-deductible expense. However, good news for pet owners may be on its way. In 2009, representative Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan introduced the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years, or HAPPY, bill, which, if passed, would allow all pet guardians to claim a deduction of up to $3,500 per year for the care of dependent pets. The bill has not yet been codified into law, but you can help by reading the bill and contacting your representative. In time, responsible pet guardians may be able to deduct care expenses from our federal taxes.

For more information about deducting pet care expenses from your taxes, see publications 535, 225, and 502 from the IRS to see which, if any, deductions apply to your pet. Consider consulting a personal accountant for help claiming pet-related expenses.

All snakes have at least 2 penises (called hemipeni) - venomous snakes have 4. They're pneumatic & can be almost as long as the snake itself - 8' in some King snakes. If a snake is startled during copulation he detaches himself, leaving one behind in the female, so he can go on to fertilize other snakes. Some of them are quite beautiful - looking like coral necklaces or iridescent acorns.

Frank had me measure and no issues with the opening of the trap doors; with an inch and a half to spare, they say no problem.

For 65 dollars, they will deliver, lower into basement, install and remove the old one. This in contrast to a 99 dollar delivery at AJ Madison and a 300 dollar installation charge and a 25 dollar pre installation survey!!

Plus, I got the pleasure of speaking with an intelligent capable organized sales person. Wonderful!! It will be delivered on Friday.

All this is very true. It's very rare that people make money consistently through "market timing." I've never engaged in it with maybe the exception of buying and selling gold. Stay in the market through highs and lows and over the long term (5+ years) you're likely to have come away with 5-7% returns BEFORE dividends. Also stay diversified with funds or at least 20+ individual stocks but buying individual stocks entails much more risk, especially if you rewally don't know anything about them!!!!

"most businesses are cutting back workers' hours due SPECIFICALLY to Obamacare for one thing."

And you know what? They are STUPID. Because they are businesses like Pizza Hut and other service businesses that can easily pass the costs to customers, like they pass on the rising costs of milk and cheese. The incremental rise would barely be noticeable.

More importantly, these are service businesses that depend as much on customer satisfaction as they do on the price of their food or services. Cutting people's hours is reflected in poor customer services from staff that doesn't give a shit, because they know their bosses don't give one about them. The better employees will quit, the rest of them will go through the motions, no more.

I know when I lived in Brooklyn, I knew which fast food places to avoid because the employees suck. Some of them are now gone. People still vote with their feet and wallets, so making a crappy minimum wage job even worse just to save a few corporate bucks is poor business sense.

I guess you know more than the managements of most of these businesses. I'm only relating what I hear CEOs say but you may know otherwise.

But say you are right. then we have Obamacare to blame for not only higher health care costs but also lower worker productivity!!!!!!
February 13, 2013 4:56 PM - ilovestoops
the pension saga continues: the paper work for applying for the pension for my first job was extremely long and needlessly complex, and has ridiculous rules - they even assign a specific person to work with you on the paperwork. I think I must have spent a total of 2 days on this. The pension appl for my second job was quick and easy and they started sending the pension right away, when it was due, even though my appl didn't get in til the last minute. The pension for the first job amounts to an astounding $89.39 per month and I won't get the first 3 months I'm entitled to because I was so late applying and it's so hard to get the paperwork right.

"you take somethjing I said and then seemingly twist it to put words in my mouth like you did above"

The operative word there is "SEEMINGLY". That was not my intention nor what I did. I was making an entirely different point.

Question, I think im cutting it short with the refund, because my credit card goes from zero percent apr to 29% apr on March 1st. I owe about 1000 dollars on that card. It will definitely be paid off by April 1st, but how much interest am I going to be charged in that one month? Is it 29% of 1000 dollars!? would that mean on March 1st, if I dont pay the 1000 dollars, that I will now owe 1,290 dollars!??

February 13, 2013 5:11 PM - dibs
It would be 29% of 1000 or $290 over one year, so roughly $24 per month....or the amount of a decent dinner out for your birthday!!!

Not a cat person. You all know that. But serious question: Do cats actually ever lie like the one on the chair? Belly up, legs spread? A dog might do that for a second or two to get it's belly rubbed but would quickly snap out of it as it is too vulnerable a position.

Having three fish tanks in one apartment with a nutty do nipping at my ankles the whole time I am trying to change them and do so seascapin makes me wanna scream CALGON TAKE ME AWAY in the most literal sense. BUt I enjoy it. Jamie Lee seems back to getting to life, I was worried about her. She still wont really eat like any other fish I had. But she seems healthy.

I wrote this on facebook earlier and then totally deleted it stat cuz I thought people with three kids would get pissy at me.

Are fish like kids!? The first one is your favorite and always the most beautiful. The second one is the most fun to play with and make you laugh. The third one dies, and then the fourt one is some sorta psychopath that you just want to drop off at the shrink and have them give them meds to make that last one better!?!? Sorry, but I see similar patterns with families that I do with my four fish (well three). Of course most people these days don't have four kids, and rarely three, so you miht not see the patterns, but I think with families with 3-4 kids that pattern is very pervasive across multiple species.

Oh gack, Just realized I am my birth mom's third kid! But it aint like she's in any situation these days to have a fourth lol.

Imagine if people posted pictures of big busted black women or country young chicks with dropsey or central american women with dollar coin sized bronze aeorolas all damn day long? WOuld that fly!? No! Would you like looking at things that make your dick go limp!?

Lol. Maybe if he turned homo and he was her hairdresser?

I'm always very coy about the kinds of people I find hot because I am fickle and it changes all the time and I am mostly only turned on by actual brain sparks. I don't have a "type", and I can't just fall for someone based on physical attributes (I mean, I CAN I guess in some way, but that's so lame). People lose their hotness SO fast, and people can gain hotness in a flash depending on how your brains are working together.

If I had to say what my types are, here they are.

I always LOL when D.P. (LOL) signs off and adds "goodnight lurkers" as if to make everything as mundane, dumb, and and stupid as everything all of say all day that people actually care. Newsflash, NO ONE does. There are no LURKERS, at least not real lurkers in the sense of lurking. You might get one or two from people following other people, but to be sure as hell sure, it's NOT having anything to do with the conversation that most of you contribute. But if it makes you feel like Blanche at a a spa, then go on ahead with your bad ass selves!

I still think it's stinkin' thinkin' like that old comedy sketch would say. People don't really think that way, do they?!

im only posting this video to light a firecracker under dirty's ass to get him to get my taxes done ASAP!

No worries, Peppers, there ARE lurkers, I am just curious where you think they come from. Trust, no one is coming for the cat pictures or the cyber ladies drinks. Not saying anyone has lurked here because of me, but believe me, there are no lurkers in general in the sense of the internet when it comes to shit like that. That would just be absurd. As much as people in Brooklyn like to think the entire world wants to think about Brooklyn, honestly no one gives a shit and Brooklyn is corny as hell I can't imagine anyone admitting on other sites living here (hells I just say I am from Jersey city, NJ. Which I am).

cat pictures = mental deficiency. Listen, I have a degree in psychology. Granted, it's only a BA, but it's the same as someone with just a BA in American History talking about, er, Amrican History. Y'all freaks and know it. Okay, going to sleep, try to get my taxes done by Tuesday morning if you can. I can up the books from 10 to like 15 if you want, come to your apartment in the hood sign them and then run back home to Park Slope.

February 14, 2013 12:11 AM - pepper
Rob, I don't think you are being mean to me. But I do think there are a fair amount of lurkers on the site. I really find it hard to believe that I am so special that I was the only one... and on such a small, insular site as this, there is no other name (imo) for someone who follows but doesn't post. I'm not judging, exactly, only saying that if you think there are no lurkers, you are highly likely to be wrong...

It's been around the same for YEARS. 800-1000 for FED and like 100 for State. That has been what I am expecting, and that that is what I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED to get a monkey off my back. Don't beat yourself up over it. If I get a shitty refund, I'll just dress wrap a DIB'S like tie around my neck, make marsupial sounds, and accept that I should have saved better. I'm a big boy. However, if it's less than 700 dollars, you are SO fired from being my accountant it's not even funny. So just make it work, okay?
