Just called my neighbor in P-Town...the contractor with all the guns. He hasn't been out yet, which is surprising for him. He says it's still snowing so much and blowing so strong (nh) that he can't even see out his windows. Power went out last night at around 8:00.

Also, like CT, the MA governor has told everyone to stay off the roads and since he and Obama are buddies, Rupert's not going out because he's afraid Obama might send a drone after him.

And I've already taken Sam & Max from my home in Cobble Hill to play in Cobble Hill Park, and now I'm taking them from my home in Cobble Hill to play at the State Street Dog Run in Brooklyn Heights. "No pics of S&M in Cobble Hill Park???????"

No, dave, I can't let them off leash in Cobble Hill Park, so I couldn't take pics. I tried to take pics on Columbia Street en route to State Street - because Max insisted on walking on the side, where the snow was piled deepest and not shoveled - but it was all I could do to hold on to their leashes since there was barely a foot path in the snow.

I kept a small shovel, but I can't be asked. Besides, I'm JEWish, and we have people for these things.

I gave my really good snow shovel to my friends on Amity Street. Why do I need to clear off the deck? I'll let S&M play out there later in the snow. For now, I just enjoy the way it looks.

I've told you repeatedly that, like you, when I lived on Carroll Street (in Carroll Gardens), I used to shovel not only my sidewalk, but my 90-year-old neighbor's sidewalk and stoop as well, since his deadbeat son who lived with him was too lazy to do it ever.

I agree with the drone policy in general, since the alternative is to invade Pakistan. However I think there should be some checks and balances if US citizens are involved, ie judicial review and approval by a relevant congressional committee (all in secret of course). The President should not have the unilateral power to kill American citizens, for obvious reasons.

DH, I agree with you. And that's why I also agree with dave. And Arkady. That's why I thought Joe Scarborough's suggestion was reasonable: Let a FISA Court (which is entirely secret) review the evidence and determine whether it warrants going after an American who has defected to Al Qaeda . . . or if it's just a MORON like Six Years who thinks its fun to travel to Southern Yemen.

Haven't ever been to southern Yemen. I've fired a machine gun in northern Yemen though, outside of a little village called al-Mahwit. You can find it on Google Maps though no doubt if you do that you'll be a drone target too.

Morning, CGar. Our neighbor with a snow blower shoveled us out. Slumlord still sipping coffee.

Friend just posted this photo on FB, courtesy of Bay Ridge Historical Society:

"The current snow storm may serve as a reminder of a very special photograph within our collection here at the Bay Ridge Historical Society taken by Samuel W. Thomas. This photograph was captured by Thomas after the Blizzard of 1888. It's one of the many spectacular photographs we have included in our collection of Thomas slides. It was captured by Thomas with his wooden box framed camera on March 19th, 1888, on the estate of Benjamin Coles Townsend, located at Second Avenue (Ridge Boulevard) between Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth streets. The snow storm occurred on March 12th of that year, with wind gusts up to Ninety mile per hour. An interesting note in the history of Bay Ridge concerns Samuel W. Thomas' nephew, William Thomas, son of William H. Thomas, who was the elder brother of Samuel. Thomas' nephew married Benjamin Coles Townsend daughter, Charlotte, and were wed at Christ Church Episcopal Bay Ridge. (Courtesy of Matthew Scarpa, Bay Ridge Historical Society)"

Rob, you should get boots at Target (or elsewhere, but they are very cheap at Target). But I guess we've had this conversation before.

Back from delivery of daughter to rehearsal at a church on 74th between 1st and 2nd Aves. Streets pretty good for driving, sidewalks not so great for walking. An amazing number of drivers in 4WD SUVs who have absolutely no idea how to drive in slush, but it could have been worse. Kid will take the train home.

M4L, I'm glad I parked on the left side of the street, but it's not so bad, even on the right side--a little digging but not much. Harder (nh) if you're parked in tight (nh). Came home via Grand St., then the Williamsburg Bridge. Many Chinese pedestrians enjoying the cleared green bike lane around the corner from the drug store (CVS? Rite Aid? Not sure which) for the bikes to get to the bridge. Few bikers, and they are getting sprayed (nh) with black slush.

RF: My cousin who I met in Rockefeller center sent me boots (among a gazillion other gifts) in December. So, yes, for the first time EVER, I have actual snow boots! They are a tad big and go clomp clomp clomp and I walk like a duck in them, but that's okay. It's weird cuz I can wear a size 10 in shoes and sneakers, but with boots they are so loose. I guess cuz you are supposed to wear thick socks with them? Whatever, they get the job done, and I hope this is the last snow of the year because I am already over it. Snow around x mas = awesome, snow this time of year is just Mother Nature being a bitch.

I shoveled last night a first layer of wet snow and slush, then once again late, late. It was gorgeous, and the sense of silence with the cars off the roads and the snow absorbing sound..... just lovely. I did it again early this am and it was easy work. Then a little later I saw some sawdust on my steps and tiny bit of little salt. What was this? Tenants trying to tell me something??

But then I realized that my neighbor and good friend decided to sprinkle a little of the sawdust and a little salt he put on his stoop and sidewalk since a little ice had formed on mine. He put it on my sidewalk too. Nice guy.

Someone needs to invent clothing with thermonuclear pouches where you can keep your fish. I would love to take them to the park right now. Today would be one of those days where I'd be at the park with Duke, right now. I'm kinda like 2 seconds away from hopping on the b63 bus, head to target, and go on a shopping spree, but I don't want to do that. It feels good to shop, but then when the bills pile up you kinda sorta hate yourself. I imagine it's the same kinda feeling that people have when they have sexual hookups with strangers.

This is my least favorite kind of weather. Nasty blackish slush and puddles with the sun blaring. A gross chill in my body because I refuse to keep the heat on in my bedroom cuz it makes me too hot. It literally smells like shit outside too. Whenever it snows in NYC it hits you just how filthy this city really is. blech!

Oh, the tenant is not living upstairs now; just some random things she still has to take out. So I went up there and sat on the living room floor for a while to absorb the feeling of the place. It turns out that the living room ceiling is 4 inches lower than the adjoining room! There is some secret mess above the living room ceiling. I can't do anything right away up there, but that made me feel good. I'll get somebody to take off a corner to see what is going on with it.

Also, the place is bright!! The skylights and the lack of obstruction to light on the top of the building makes it very sunny! I did notice that it was snowing in the bathroom. Some snowdusting was coming through the vents, which is something I need to address. (Remember Diane Keeton in Baby Boomer?) Appliances are a mess; cheap and energy inefficient. I did spend about 1,000 bucks on new lighting fixtures throughout the apartment and had it painted in several different colors to match her stuff. That looks fine for now.

I have come to some conclusions about living on the garden floor. It is below street level on the first floor of this duplex and I have never spent so much time cleaning an apartment. Leaves blow in when I open the door, there is plenty of street dirt. I think I will enjoy not having to deal with that. (Fishing for things to tell myself). Most of the stuff I really love in this apartment will fit in the new one, i.e. the art that I have. I have some really beautiful stuff that I collected over the years and I was going through things figuring out where I would put things and what I needed in there. Can't be a lot. Year 2 I will do the renovation hopefully. Maybe I will love it enough to live there a while.

In the top of the skylight??? If so, go up on the roof (after the snow is gone) and wrap the vents with either rigid foam insulation pieces or just bubblewrap. Use the real aluminum duct tape to secure all edges and corners, not the plastic crap.

It doesn't help that no matter what I am *ALWAYS* the one who has to set the whole shindig up physically and stuff.

Oh yeah and WHO is setting up their own birthday on Monday at work? *me*. Actually it's for three people... We have two Feb 9th birthdays and one Feb 10th so we are doing a bagel breakfast and then cake at the end of the day.

One person actually came up to me though and was I'll pick up the bagels for you, so I gave him the petty cash. YAY! I was kinda happy cuz we always get our bagels from Gourmet Garage, and they are kinda hard all the time... He said he will pick them up from a place called Bagel Boys(?) in Bay Ridge. He brought them in one other time for some other thing and I thought they were really good, WAY better than the gourmet garage bagels.

Ok, dibs. That was definitely part of the draftiness she was experiencing. Although it was nice and toasty up there just a little while ago. She finally took out the a/c which was like closing the window FINALLY.

I realized that I have to demolish that place to really renovate it. I have to knock down one wall (non weight bearing), remove the floors (and even the joists under the floors), make new closets, install new floors, do new kitchen and bath. I also need to see what is going on behind the fireplace which leads to the chimney. A lot of draft is coming from there. I spent 20,000 to do the same with the other tenant apartment. I don't know if I can do this work so cheaply now. Especially since these guys I used were ok with construction but I got bad electrical and plumbing work out of them. Which I have been paying for.

You spent 20,000 dollars to get rid of a draft!?! Omg, just put on a sweater. Americans are heat OBSESSED in the winter, it's BIZARRE. It's just like people in the south who spend all their time indoors in the summer in the AC. wtf? I really think we are way over obsessed with temperature regulation as humans in general. And with that temperature regulation comes about anger and hostility because not everyone feels the same way or feels the same temperature. I know with me, It's SO BLARING hot in my office, yet people complain it's cold... But I do get it, we all feel temp in a different way. In the summer in the office it's awesome cuz it's nice and cool! Why is it comfy for an office to be like 80 plus degrees in the Winter (when people generally wear winter clothes which makes it even feel HOTTER) than it is in the summer when the indoor temp is kept at like 70 and people are wear less!?!? ugh.

I can deal with whatever temp it is OUTSIDE, cold cold cold hot hot hot, but when it comes to indoors, oh fuck no. It's always too hot most places I have to be at, and I guess for some people it's always too cold!? But if it's too cold just put on a sweater! It's winter. I can barely wear any winter attire to work. Frustrating.

Okay, really going now!

OH! My goal of the day! I KNOW exactly what I need!!!!! Something that holds wires underneathe a kitchen island. I have Dudley's wires (for his lights and his heater) hooked up to an extension cord that is taped under the kitchen cabinet. You cant see it when you stand up, but if you sit on the floor in the living room, which I do, you can see it and it totally "looks very hoboken" as my grandmother used to say. Are there tubes I can put these wires in? Will go to the Target home department to see if I can find something that works. does anyone know what im talking about? Im not trying to HIDE the wires in walls, just make them look a little less ugly and a little more streamlined.

dona, I empathize completely. That's how I feel about my new place - which I totally love and is really taking shape and working out well for me. My new place is plenty big, but I basically moved in stuff that had filled the Parlor and Garden floors of my house, plus the cellar and garden, plus a lot of stuff that I'd had in storage from my family that never made it to my house. It's taken me a long time to figure out what works where, and what I just have no place for, including a lot of stuff I've collected over the years (as dave likes to mock all my "tchotchkies"). I've hung about 60 pieces of art, and I'm really very happy that there's a place for almost all that I've collected over the years. I'm sure I still have too much stuff out, but I'll gradually pare down things that I don't love and really don't need, after everything is unpacked and organized and I've lived with it for awhile.

I was in Mexico with Fulgencio during Day of the Dead. You should see those altars. But for a truly over-the-top altar you need to go to homes in the Philippines. Here's one of the more tasteful ones

Not really and wasn't expensive, like most things from Thailand. Besides, that's what they are made for. Should mount it so it's easily removed and brought in for the Winter. A few coats of Valspar should make it impervious to a lot of sun and water.

Probably won't go to Asia this year...big tax bill and A/C installation in Bucks.

Googled it. Nursery rhyme.
February 9, 2013 5:46 PM - dibs
It's a nursery rhyme. Song of Sixpence.

I had to look up the exact words:

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn't that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?

The king was in his counting house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlour,
Eating bread and honey.

The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes;
When down came a blackbird
And pecked off her nose.

They sent for the king's doctor,
who sewed it on again;
He sewed it on so neatly,
the seam was never seen.

Rob, I am talking about renovating an apartment completely. This house was a complete wreck when I bought it and I renovated everything but the top apartment, which is not only drafty but tilted with several strange postage stamp rooms and functional but not nice kitchen and bathroom.

For 20,000 for the other apartment, I:

-- ripped out warped damaged floors with cracks in between them and replaced it with new flooring

-- repaired the joists of the supporting floors and made them even.
--removed years of bad repairs to the floor
--upgraded electrical and plumbing
-- new doors everywhere
-- light fixtures
-- made two closets
-- repaired plaster everywhere, skim coated, painted
-- repaired masonry
-- removed old broken down bathroom and completely redid the bathroom
-- made a new kitchen

The cost was labor and materials. That is what I did for 20,000. Which is cheap for that. I was saying that this place similar work. The draft is only one thing.

The storm had blanketed the 585-acre oasis with nearly a foot of powder, but by 9 a.m. an army of sledders and off-leash dogs had already turned the park’s vast Long Meadow into a giant plate of half-eaten mashed potatoes. For the dozen or so skiers and showshoers just heading into the park from Grand Army Plaza, it was a challenge to find a place to lay some fresh tracks.

Rob, I have some clear packing tape but won't be going your way for a while. I got it at Staples and it's not expensive. (I gave a lot of it to BSM when she was moving but I know I have some left and would be happy to trade with you if you felt like coming here.)

RF thanks, Im gonna try to get all McGiver on this shit. I DO have scotch tape and pink duct tape! And some brown packing tape.. But the tube itself makes using tape irrelevant anyway (which was the point i guess). Im gonna tackle this shit in a few minutes, just trying to decompress...)

So.. I <3 Heidi Fleiss fish (Dinky II). It's so weird, fish are kinda like dogs. When I come into the room she bugs out and won't leave me alone, it's adorable. Fish really do have different personalities. I like that she can't jump on me or demand me to take her out for a walk. She's crazy buggy and I love it. This is the fish that killed the fish that was my original favorite. Both were female. Male Bettas are kinda boring (well, Dudley out in the living room is cool and fun, but in a different kind of way) The female bettas are really tiny and super spazzy and they follow everything you do.

I don't know WHY I fell for male bettas (cuz of their ridiculously gay fins!? they can barely swim with them!). The feales dart around like little bugs and they follow wherever you are in the room. The males kinda just like to hide out in their castles and shit. Tho JLCrP has come around quite a bit.

Okay for reals, I gotta get this fish tubing wiring done before my roommate gets home lol

At Starbucks, refills are 50 cents. Are they still? I was mortified when some barista bitch called me out for taking in my cup numerous times a day :-/ I wanted to scream at her and point out at all the people sucking up all their electricity bills!

Who cares if someone takes a clean-ish cup from the trash and asks for a 50 cent refill? Apparently underemployed, overeducated (LOL!) baristas do.

I'm not sure how much refills are at Starbucks. When I worked there they were free (for coffee/tea).

Refills are for the same visit. Bringing in an old cup is a faux-pas.

The people at La Colombe were cool and would sometimes give me a refill price on my coffee if I came in the afternoon after already buying in the morning. That's the benefit of going to a non-corporate place and spending a few more cents and developing a rapport with humans

Which place? I liked Happy right outside the subway when we lived there, maybe because we met them when they first opened and they had 2 daughters a little older than mine. The younger one is probably a college freshman now. When we still lived in Clinton Hill, their son (a little older) and his wife took over the front of the restaurant. They are very personable.

Maybe different people now? But the neighborhood was very different then and they kept things cheap because that's what their clientele wanted.

Now we order from Eagle, across the street, because they deliver.

Greetings all! I hear that there's been some snow in Brooklyn and the northeast. My condolences.

Port of call today was St. Lucia, and I hiked in a rainforest. Then I worked on my tan.

In answer to DIBS' question: the most interesting person I've met so far is a British woman that I had breakfast with this morning. She runs a radio station at her local hospital. What is that, you say? Same question I had. Apparently in the UK many hospitals have a community-run radio station. Originally these radio stations were started as a charitable endeavor to keep the patients amused, but they have morphed into a sort of local affair. The only thing similiar that we have in the US would be a college station.

One of the women at my dining table -the wife from Maine - is a liberal loudmouth. So far I've had to hear her expound on gun control and the Vietnam war. Since I'm on vacation, I just sit, listen and smile (believe it or not).

Off to Barbados! Here's an interesting tidbit: it is illegal for a civilian to wear military camaflouge clothing in Barbados.

Six;

Not stopping in Dominica on this cruise, though I'm sure that some line stops there on some run.

I am amazed at the number of people I've met who are my age (55) and retired. All of them say the same thing: "I couldn't see the point of working past 55". I discussed it with my wife, and told her that even if I felt financially secure enough to swing it, I wouldn't do it. I just can't see throwing in the towel at that age.

I have also discovered that there is a large group of people who go on back-to-back cruises for 3-4 weeks, instead of snowbirding it in Florida or Arizona.

Pepper, her family came here ages ago, and her dad isn't from that part of the world at all. Lots of cultural baggage there!

I'm not anywhere near 55 but I think I'd be pretty bored if I retired then.

For some reason, I can't open that link. My folks went on the Queen mary a few years ago, and they didn't like it for the same reason I wouldn't like it: it's one of these mega-ships. I don't like the mega-ships that hold up to 6000 passengers.

I always cruise with Princess, and I find that they attract a large loyal following, including a fair number of folks from Canada and Europe. We met one couple who have taken 47 cruises with them!!! (yet another couple that retired young). Princess has elegant service in the dining room, yet it's not snooty. I've said it before: one of the most enjoyable aspects is the dining and the social aspects of it. On the formal nights, one feels like you are in one of the 1920's movies.

FYI: I wasn't there for the fun in the snow. But the pics are cute and that is the dog I live with. I miss Duke. A lot

Why do people hate on cruises? they sound like a ton of fun. I think i'd love it. It's like a vacation, but regimented (?). I don't know. I could see myself having an amazing time on a cruise even if it's filled with old fogies, for which I became part of yesterday! I am no longer part of the 18-35 year old demographic! It actually feels freeing. Now I can say whatever I want and get away with it cuz im old and shit.

Rob, I was your age when I had my daughter. You're not exactly old just yet. Sorry, to burst your bubble.

Uk hospitals suck big time. they need radio stations like a hole in the head. Nursing care abominable. My closest thing to a prison experience.
