ESB looked lovely tonight. Listened to messiah performed tonight by musica sacra at carnegie hall, it was fantastic. Many folks in audience seemed to have bronchitis. I also recommend "the mystery of edwin drood".

Greetings from Jersey City.
I am still trying to figure out what type of Moron works on Christmas Eve.
I think this is the first time in my career I have done so.
The good news was that the trains were running on a normal schedule, but were close to empty.

Before it gets too late and I start running around, I just want to wish you all a very joyous Christmas. Be safe, be loved, and enjoy your day tomorrow. Evita and I will be spending a few days at the folks house in PS, so I probably won't be back here for a few days.

Thanks DH. Manhattans are scheduled for Wednesday, when I will be getting together with my college friends. Unfortunately, since I'm working, I'll miss the afternoon of pool that starts the festivities.

I am having some pleated shades installed in my bedroom today, to complete its redecorating (just in time for Christmas, as we will be hosting everyone tomorrow). It is AMAZING how much pleated shades cost.

what are pleated shades? i think it's amazing how expensive most window treatments are (especially if they're for big ugly new construction windows)

Maybe I'm using the wrong description. They are the shades that have the honeycomb type of structure. They are great because they are opaque, but allow some light in.

the pleated blinds that don't have the strings to raise/lower? just lift or pull down into position?
#40
December 24, 2012 10:03 AM - Deleted
Pete;

No they have the strings to lower and raise. It is sort of like a combination shade and blind. Hunter-Douglas sells them (cut to your size) which is why they are so expensive.
#41
December 24, 2012 10:12 AM - petebklyn
the Y on Atlantic avenue has huge south facing glass windows. they have sun filtering shades that I would guess cost thousands each. And there has to be couple dozen of them. Do you think they would have sense to lower/use them
especially in summer to lower a/c costs? No, instead you are stuck on treadmill with sun beating down on you.

Still morning! I was supposed to go downstate to my brother's today, but I'm still sick. I don't feel that bad, but I'm still hacking like a 3 packs a day smoker. No one, especially me, wants to be on Amtrak sitting anywhere near me, they'd probably rise up and toss me off the train into the Hudson, and I wouldn't blame them. Hopefully, I'll be better tomorrow, and will go then.

Rower chick: I brought a friend home from college once, who lived half way across the country. Every house we went into had alabaster grapes. She thought it was weird and it had never occurred to me. Maybe all your mom's friends will like them so much that they'll get wooden artichokes, too.

Have a nice Christmas hot shower, stoops. That's a nice present!

I did some last minute (is there any other way?) shopping in Bay Ridge at Century 21 and TJ Maxx. I went to a great little Pizza Parlor near there which was packed.

The guy in front of me, a very tall, burly, tough looking, 60ish guy wants a pepperoni slice. The guy behind the counter (the owner, I think) wiry, 50s, smiling and juggling several things asks the guy "You want one of these?" pointing to a sausage roll. "No, Pepperoni" he answers. The owner was distracted by one of the workers and then goes back to the big burly man transaction and looks at the guy and says "A sausage roll"?

The big man is irritated and turns around and walks toward the door in disgust, not gonna repeat his order a third time. The owner gives me a shit eatin'' grin, throws up his arms and says something like "What are you gonna do?" laughing.
The big dude hears this and comes back and says "What was that?" "You think that is funny"? And comes back to the counter in a threatening way. The owner says "Ok that's it". Big dude "Whatchu gonna do aboudit?" Owner "Ok that's it" still smiling comes out from behind the counter and says "Ok get outta here" and gets behind him close and pushes him in the back out the door like a couch."

Still smiling.

Went over to see the house that my neighbor/contractor/gun fiend is restoring. The shell of the house is from the 1830s and he showed me an original floorboad that was 24" wide. He counted the rings out from a knot and estimated that it was somewhere between 290 and 320 years old when it was cut

If Congress falls off the fiscal cliff and the Stock Market tanks, that will be a tremendous buying opportunity.
It's guaranteed that the fiscal cliff bs will eventually get fixed.
I have no idea how Congress will play this out, just saying if...

dcb: Thanks for the review of Win 8, seriously.
I just got my new Win 7 system up and going. used homegroup for the first time, just to access files on old system, and it worked great! I'm a "late adopter" - like to see as many kinks get worked out as possible before getting new system - have never needed new features.

dcb, bhs, m4l, et al: can you recommend a program other than (meaning cheaper than) adobe for generating pdf files?

Merry Christmas, PLUSAs!

"Ran into an Amazon before."

And I ran into a Chinese food delivery guy with a bevy of eye candy right in my lobby.

Lovely evening in Bay Ridge at newlywed friends' place. Really family. Yoga, sports, tennis acupuncture/pressure, chiropractic experts. I got well fed and had pinched nerve treatments! Merry Christmas. I'm feeling better.

And with the book signing event, ten fold.

Snappy: forgot to say hello - how're you feeling

Partridge: what a deal: food + phys therapy!

rf: wordperfect & word files plus web pages and scanned docs, mostly; have to work with existing pdf's from different sources, also

I've been emptying my desk to get rid of it since I'm having a roll-top sent from farm. Just threw away Win 95 and Win 98 install diskettes, and lots of other diskettes. Have 9 computers: six in desk, 3 where I'm working.

Yes, Stoops. They have a serious, state-of-the-art, massage chair. Spent 1 hour there, with wine! Then, after that, on a yoga mat with a heated acupressure nubby ball-like thingy.

Ark: I use open office "word" & "excel" apps but don't think it writes pdf's. hadn't heard of gimp - just checked it out - doesn't write pdf's but may be helpful for image processing - thanks for suggesting it.

Why not post a pic of your Xmas tree? In fact, would love to see everyone's.

To my knowledge you can't "save as" PDF unless you have some sort of conversion software.

I've never used anything except adobe.

Open Source, DH. I'm not sayin' nuthin.
December 24, 2012 11:58 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Or Libre Office, which BH says might be a little better.

Thanks DP and Stoops. I went to LibreOffice.org. Under the "features" heading is this (and think BH already said it):

"LibreOffice also comes configured with a PDF file creator, meaning you can distribute documents that you're sure can be opened and read by users of almost any computing device or operating system."

I'll check out open office to see if it generates pdf's and also libreoffice, which I'd never heard of. sounds great, though. I also print lots of emails to pdf.

rf: I can print from word and almost everything else to pdf, but it's because I have adobe acrobat. don't want to put it on new computer thought because it's so expensive. you must have something that's generating pdf docs, unless there's a version of MS Office that has it included.
