Father of my friend killed in Sandy died of cancer this morning. She always said he was her favorite person in the world except for her dog. He said she was killed because she would not have been able to cope with his death which was my first reaction on hearing of her death as well. They are survived by her mother and brother.

On that note, I am off to Chicago for the weekend.

That's so sad, 6. So sorry.

My best friend is a long-time cancer survivor. Shortly after she went into remission, her dad died. She felt he couldn't handle her being ill. I told her "no, he held on long enough to see that you were OK".

GM. Good Luck today, Part.

I was touched (nh, nl) to see I've been asked for. I haven't been posting at night because my daughter hangs out with me. But, since all these assholes (loved ones) in my life think 6:30 AM is the new best time to call me, I can post in the mornings. Hubby is sorta stable. He's now got an infection in his blood and stomach which they identified through a culture and are treating with the correct meds.

New plan is to start waking him up so they can remove him from respirator. They will continue to clean the stomach for a few days then insert a wound vac which will drain any infection while allowing the incision to close naturally.

My heart broke into a million pieces the other day when my daughter took his hand and said, "Hi Daddy", and a tear ran down his face. But, we're hanging in there. Hey, if he can hang on through all he's being put through, the least I can do is handle it.

Funny how life is. Suddenly when illness hits, all other worries go out the door. I am here worried about some job or career and there are people out there fighting for their lives. We had yet another big re-org and I was dumped into a different group. A director in the group (not my boss though - who is based in LA) who was sort of my mentor and who has been amazing to me got diagnosed with breast cancer the same day the announcement came out. Now she couldn't care less if she keeps her job or not (which she will) and running around making appointments for interviewing oncologists and doing tests. With a flip of a switch, her whole world and worries turned around. So besides my job, I might have to pick up some leadership for her department since I am the only manager in our division based on the east coast besides her. Oh well, maybe it'll involve more hours for me or maybe they'll just move all of our functions to LA. Not worried either way. Worst case, pick up all my shit and move right back to good ol' Brooklyn.

My old boss hired my replacement already and the kid is really sharp. Probably will leave me in the dust in a couple of months. Old boss really knows how to pick 'em it seems.

Hi Kens, hope you're doing OK up north!

It all started with a ruptured brain aneurysm on Oct. 27. So many complications since then, none related to the aneurysm, so very, very frustrating. He requires traumatic brain injury rehab, but all this other stuff keeps happening. He was in rehab for a week before this latest setback.

Do people recover completely after brain injuries like that? Meaning like fully functioning?

Supposedly brain aneurysms are not uncommon and most people never know they have them. But once it ruptures, that's when there is a problem. Since there was no family history, its being blamed on high blood pressure (and of course smoking, which is blamed for everything). My husband was never one for taking meds, so he could have been diagnosed with high blood pressure at some time and never told me. He's funny that way. It happened out of the blue, no signs of a problem.

As for recovery, who knows. I'm just trying to get him healthy enough to see what his quality of life will be. I've heard some amazing stories, and, I've also lost relatives/aquaintances to aneurysms. Each case is different. He was pretty bad to begin with, so these setbacks are really worrying me that he may not recover as well as I hope. I won't give up hope, but I'll settle for him to just have his dignity and be able to care for himself. I'll deal with everything else in our lives.

EDIT.... no, I won't settle. We're fighting this all the way!!!!!

I agree, everything is relative. BUT, it is life-changing to lose your jobs, homes to Sandy, etc. My BIL, who lost his home, keeps saying that he shouldn't complain after what we are going through. M4L, yes and no per se. I have now about 75% of responsibility in Buffalo office and 25% responsibility in NYC office and in NYC quiet often since I still have my place there and my fiance is in NYC (for now). That might change tomorrow. My NYC boss is due to retire in about 3 years or a little more and I'll be gunning for him job then (granted 1. his job will still be there 2. I will still be employed with my company). I already had offers from 2 big media giants in NYC so if I hate it up here or things are not working out, I'll be making some phone calls). I just love what I do and people I work with so staying with the company.

M4L - yeah the sticker price on housing is ridiculously huge but it's also because no one wants to live in Buffalo and city population and surrounding populations are dwindling year over year. There are some decent companies up here but good employment is limited. Having said that, I live in an area that the UES equivalent for the area in terms of prestige and pricing and let me tell you, folks around here have money. You should see some of the houses and cars in the driveway. These people definitely doing OK for themselves. I live in probably the only apartment development in the area :o(.

Dave, taxes are outragous in this town because:

Last June, when I listed my apartment for sale, there were 30 1BR co-ops on Shore Road for sale with askings between $165,000 to $335,000. I've been in contract since early August. I'm happy I was able to sell.

2. Congrats, kens. Is your fiancee anyone you've brought to a PLUSA gathering?

3. Good luck eva. So many little twists and turns to the rehab process. It drove Mrs Slopey crazy when she was with her mother in the ICU because with every attempt to breathe independently the machinery would make all these beeps and noises and all the numbers would change. hard work stayng with the person and tuning out all the medical machinery.

Forty (40!!) Heights residents want all filming to stop . . .

When in BH, our coop voted no on having our place used as a film set for a movie. It was right around the holidays, they would have been in the hallway for 12 hour stretches and for the 1200 bucks we would have gotten minus cleanup, we decided it was too much of a PITA for all of us. I am glad that NY is making lots of TV shows and movies but they really think they own the street when filming

Dave, you are too goyische to discern Jewish names. It's a Jewish skill. Mrs. Slopey is always astonished when I say whether someone is Jewish based on the name. ***QUESTION***

The blown spotlight bulbs I'm replacing all appear to be 45-watts. All I could find at Bruno's on Court were 50-watt. All I could find at Lowe's and HD were 65-watt. There is a chart inside the fixtures with three columns listing all types of bulbs and at least one column says that for BR30, the maximum watt is 65-watt. That's what I got at HD, so are those okay? I don't want to start a fire or blow the fixtures.

^^^ The prollem is that I have no idea what "Trim Number" the spotlights are (or even what a "Trim Number" is, but okay). So the left column in which I'm s'posed to match up my "Trim Number" is pretty useless. In the right column, there is one place where it says "75-watt, R30" is the maximum allowed for that "Trim Number", and in another place it says "100-watt, R30" is the maximum allowed for that "Trim Number". I got R30 bulbs, which I assume is what that part means, so I was thinking 65-watt is okay if 75-watt or 100-watt is the max allowed.

Trim number refers to what sort of decorative trim you are using, which should be on the trim piece. This is importnat because some trim pieces are likey to retain more heat in the fixture than others. If you are unable to figure it out, use the lowest rated wattage allowed. The difference between 50 and 65 watts will be undiscernable. R30 is the base type which tellsyou what kind of bulb you need. Yes, 65 is fine if 75 or 100 is allowed.

OK, I was actually able to pull down one of the round metal thingies that looks like the brim of a hat (the thing that's attached with springs to the fixture), which I'd thought was stuck to the ceiling with paint, but it's not. On the inside (brilliantly placed flush against the ceiling), there's a sticker that says "Halo 301P". Must be the trim number because "301" is in 2 places in the left column, and then in the right column it says "75-watt maximum", so the 65-watt should be fine.

Thank you all for your guidance, sarcasm and puns. That concludes my DIY project for the day. Next time, I'll just call my Mexican electrician Miguel.

M4L, I got stuck in a terrible traffic jam because of a 4-car accident on the Grand Central. But before and after, including the BQE from Tillary St., through the merge from the Williamsburg Bridge, and after the accident, there was no serious traffic. And there was no traffic on the LIE after the exit. Big mistake, should have stayed on LIE, oh well. I got onto the BQE at around 8.

As I said before, I have driven home a zillion times from Long Island all hours from 4 to 6. Sometimes there's a traffic jam this time of year when sun is directly in the eyes of the drivers, and/or there's an accident somewhere. But it's usually pretty good. I usually take the Jackie Robinson Pkway, off at Bushwick Ave., then through the streets to my house, but I've gone to the LIE and BQE and the worst part is getting off at Kent/ Wythe Ave., the little Satmar traffic jam down Franklin and then home. I've also gone past the exit to downtown Brooklyn or Red Hook and I've often thought it would be faster to get off at the Williamsburg Bridge and then back on at the Brooklyn Bridge--it can get bad through downtown Brooklyn.

But if you're serious about the job, you should drive it when you'd be going, back and forth. My guess is a little less than an hour in the morning, maybe a little more than an hour coming home because the bridge is worse then, plus you are on the wrong side of Delancey when you get off the bridge.

"How many PLUSAs does it take to change a light bulb?"

One to call the Mexican electrician, three to mix the Martinis, two to demand the old lightbulb be landmarked, one to oppose the landmarking, seven to debate the light bulb's sexual preferences, one to correct the grammar of those involved in changing the light bulb, and one to ram an I-beam up Dave's ass.

I bet if you ask an MTA employee what the job of the MTA is, you'll get the answer "running trains." It is not but that's what they think it is. Their job is transporting passengers but, just as with Amtrak, the hierarchy of what's important is:

1. Employees first
2 Trains second
3. Passengers, a distant third

We're baking tomorrow night. And Saturday. The 2nd of 3 or 4 waves of baking.

I have 2 of the more time-consuming kinds done. Tomorrow we will do 4 kinds. 2 will be from dough I made on Monday, and is in the fridge ready to 'slice n' bake' off. Then 1 is half done, dough in layers in the fridge, I just need to put it together and let it 'rest' for a bit, and slice, then bake. Then Saturday, I'll do 2 more, 1 is decided, but the other will be TBD, depending on my mood. I'm thinking about a chocolate bark—a new thing for me.

Thanks, Stoops! I was able to use your earlier advice about possible appraisal short fall and build it into the contract. Fortunately didn't matter. Appraised well. Thanks for the tip!

Here is a photo of the Art Deco fireplace which although original to the building, it is not made from limestone, but concrete block. 16 years ago I prepped it by creating a smooth surface, and painted it to look like limestone with granite base and top. Buyer said it sold her on the place.

Congrats, DH! You might have to stay there now. : )

Thanks, Stoops. The screen is beautiful. A bit small for the opening and out of period, but was within my budget at the time. Sold it to the agent for $250. I think I paid the same.

I made the buyer cry. She is buying the apartment for/with her parents to live there. I told her how happy they will be as I was here. We had just finished bickering about a $200. electrical charge that I wouldn't agree to for some outlets deemed "reversed" by the super. I made a stink and ultimately we split the charge. Held up the closing for a while. Was trying to get my agent to offer to pay. She made too much for too little work. I did more than my share of painting, cleaning and staging. Buyer came from within building.

Anyway, all done! Part of my past now.

Cobble, will link to you once my lazy ass gets resume up onto there. I've told my wife to chew me out on getting all this done ASAP.

Buyer's parents essentially paying off her mortgage instead of renting elsewhere.

Her monthlies are $825. mortgage plus $880. maintenance. 6 month tax abatement reduces it by $100 p/m. Still too high. I haven't followed details of costs since I haven't been living there, but I remember we carried a balloon mortgage on the building that eventually would have to get paid. Maybe that is why is has gotten so high. I paid about $450. p/m for many years.

M4L, do not wait. Get the basics up there. Don't be a perfectionist. Link to EVERYONE you know. Do it this weekend. It will take you an hour or so. Post your old resume and just add on for new. Look at what everyone else posts, it runs the gamut. JUST DO IT. I'll make you some brownies! : D

Likewise, DH. I have general ideas, but who knows! The only thing I'm sure of is that we're a bunch of Pathetic Loser Usual Suspect Asshats. ; )

I mostly know too much about what dibs does. For other PLUSA's, I know very little about what they do.

I think I know what maybe half the PLUSAs do/did (retired people) for a living. The rest of you are categorized into vague areas, sort of like college majors.

I don't get the photo for today's OT - is it supposed to mean something? Is it art and I'm just too hick to tell?
