CCOTD. Dedicated to MM, who, deep down, really loves non-traditional Christmas songs.

How can you not love "Jingle Bell Rock"? And synched to someone's Christmas light display, no less.

Kazoo, watch what you say. I've decided that the breezeway at the Cape needs some color instead of the bright white. We'll be discussing colors Christmas week. i may add the first floor bath to that list. Pics to follow.

If you remember, the dining room and living room wainscoting have already been repainted.

OY...

If she stopped seeing her alleged abuser, she would have been expelled from school.

The mother of a teenage Brooklyn girl who was allegedly sexually abused by a prominent Hasidic leader testified yesterday that she was forced by her daughter’s yeshiva to send the girl to the man for counseling — and even had to pay for the dubious privilege.

Nechemya Weberman, 54, allegedly abused the girl during their frequent counseling sessions beginning when she was just 12 years old, prosecutors charge.

“The school gave her a hard time and said she was ‘apikoros,’ ” a Hebrew and Greek word that means heretic, the mother testified in Brooklyn Supreme Court.

OUTRAGE: A mother testfied yesterday a yeshiva forced her daughter to see Nechemya Weberman (above), who allegedly sexually abused the girl.
When asked the repercussion of not sending her youngest daughter to Weberman, she answered in halting English, “They wouldn’t accept her. They wouldn’t allow her to go to school.”

United Talmudical Academy administrators even required the family to pay Weberman $12,800 in advance — before the teen started eighth grade, the mother testified.

ON RAISING TAXES:

"When taxes are raised, people and corporations fin ways to reduce their taxes. The London telegraph last week reported that when the UK government raised the top tax bracket to 50% a couple of years ago, two-thirds of millionaires laft Britain, and instead of raising funds, the higher tax rate actually cost the UK governmant over $10 BILLION POUNDS in lost revenue."

"According to The Baltimore Sun, when the Maryland "millionaires" tax was enacted a few years ago to raise an additional $106 million from taxpayers making more than $1 million, "the results were that revenue collected from taxpayers in that category fell by $100 million"

Common usage is that it does mean "to destroy a large part"

CGar, moving along to a different military march, did you know some version of this:

We are brave, we are bold
We are naked and we're cold
in the cellar of Murphy's garage

G.I. Joe, he turned green
Someone pissed in his canteen
In the cellar of Murphy's garage

We will drink, drink, drink
Till we vomit in the sink
Shout out, whenever you want more
[More beer please . . . thank you]

[two lines I can't recall]
In the cellar of Murphy's garage

OK, weirdest earworm day ever. Woke up with an earworm mashup of Springsteen's Kitty's Back (and not the album version, but the live version from my bootleg cassette of Capitol Theater 1978 concert, complete with Roy Bittan's mid-song jam on the piano riff from Van Morrison's Moondance) mixed with Taylor Swift's We (EEE) Are never, Ever Ever Getting Back Together. Add to that Col. Bogie's March and Murphy's Garage -- Oh, and farmhand said a friend of hers found her dad's old copy of Zappa's Valley Girl so that's in the mix, too. Anyone want to add anything else to this mostly toxic brew? Sort of an earworm Hurricane Sandy (the fireworks are . . . ).

I just saw a guy in a nice jacket with a silhoutte of the NYC skyline and "Lathers" written across it in red script. I immediately thought it was some titty bar I hadn't heard of when in fact it should have been accented on the first syllable not the second and referred to the Loccal 201 Lathers Union.

But, back in the day if you asked them to do plaster and not just lath they probably would have gone on strike.

Does anyone know if it's 'against the law' for a borrower to speak directly w/ a lender & not have to go through the mortgage broker she's using? Does that kind of thing vary state-to-state? My niece in Colorado is getting a mortgage from FHA via a broker & the broker seems to be grit in the wheels of progress & not particularly 'au fait' with procedures - keeps coming back w/ more stipulations & delays - now over 2 months later than originally planned.

Thank you, CGar, great minds, and all. The sink will be a pop of color. I haven't painted my kitchen yet, but so far I'm thinking dark grey below the chair rail, white above, with olive green highlights and accents. I have a lot of blue and white in dishes, etc. Because of budget, I'm painting the floor, which will probably be olive, as well. I have to build a soffit on part of the ceiling to cover up pipes and electric work. I'd like to put tin ceiling tiles up, but can't really afford. Got a few other ideas for that, that will cost less, but be more labor intensive, so we'll see. No pix yet, as still pretty much raw space.

Haven't really thought of it, Dave. It's a long trip for uncertain returns. We are thinking about selling something at the Troy Farmer's market, only takes 10 minutes to get there.

M4L, like the old saying goes, "you can't go home again." I've left that place behind, and am moving on. It's still a bit of an open wound, and I don't think I could go there. I would have liked to have taken the sink and the tub, and a few other things, but in the end, I couldn't get them out, and it was getting ridiculous. I was having a fit over stupid old things. They are only things, and there are plenty more where they came from, even if I have to spend money to replace them. I already bought a salvage clawfoot tub.

The garage area had become his workspace (I wasn't using it). Now many of his power tools were destroyed & he can't claim them from FEMA because he is not officially self-employed. He has leads on new furniture for his space, but so far nothing in place. His life sucks so much more than mine. But mine sucks too right now. Also, he does have his own laptop, but apparently it has nasty viruses on it-he can't really afford any big tkt items right now. Right now anything over $100 is a big tkt item in my household.

At my age I couldn't imagine having a roommate. I imagine after so long a period it's hard to impose new rules or at least put rules in place that were never there before. The computer issue is simple...just ask for it back. If the washing machine issue is one of clothes being left there long after they are done, that's just unacceptable. Take them out and either put them in the dryer or just put them aside. He'll get the hint if you put them aside but not if you put them in the dryer yourself. He'll come to expect that.

Observation after day 2 on the job.

The building construction industry is not for the genteel. My company, which designs HVAC control systems, usually is a sub to what is called "The Mechanical Contractor". Yesterday I met Jimmy, our interface to one of our customers/mechanical contractors. Jimmy wins the award for "Best impersonation of a mafia guy by an Irishman". Jimmy drops f-bombs all over the place. When he was upset with the owner of my company, he called him "Mother F'er" about 10 times.

Jimmy does not speak corporate-speak. Here is how he described a situation in which a competitor took on a big job that was slightly over their head, in order to break into a new line of business: "They sucked a big d_ck, and got nothing for it".

"Slop, that was a great Seinfeld episode."

Agreed. One of the Seinfeld memes that has lingered longest in the culture is the clenched-fist, gritted-teeth utterance of "Newman" (one can use any nemesis uttered correctly to the same effect). My chiropractor did this the other day -- turns out Mrs. Slopey let slip wiothout naming names that a basketball friend of mine (also a patient) was playing the other day when he was under orders not to. Chiropractor figured out who the offender was and uttered his name Newman-style. Very funny, at least until my friend finds out and kills me. I had to remind Mrs. Slopey that the informal spousal exception to lawyer-client and doctor-patient confidentiality only works if the spouse actually keeps the secret. Obama was right not to tell Michelle in advance about the bin laden raid.

Good evening all.
Late night political rant:

Today, the Senate failed to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,on a vote of voted 61-38, falling short of the 66 votes needed to ratify the treaty.
Republicans voted 8-38.

Opponents, led by Santorum, used tired arguments that it threatened U.S. sovereignty and parental rights.

This treaty was negotiated by the George H.W. Bush administration, and was supported by Dole, McCain, and Lugar, but 38 of 46 GOP Senators voted against it.

I think this says much about how far the GOP has drifted beyond the realm of left and right, and into the realm of paranoia.

I will admit that this treaty is totally a feel-good gesture that would not help a single person in the U.S.

However, it would also not change a single law, procedure, rule, or have any other negative impact in the U.S.

What it would do is show that the U.S. is a member of the world community, and is willing to make the same basic commitments that other countries make.

Just 20 years ago, this would have sailed through with no opposition (other than the occasional John Bircher) and we would have reinforced that we are part of the global community.
