Talks broke down between Hostess and the bakers union. Somehow I'm totally unable to grasp the logic between a job with fewer benefirs and fewer raises or no job. None of these mopes are going to find anything else out there. This has got to be stupidity at its highest level. 18,500 out of work now.

Ok, I have been up for a while. I just got my turkey from Fresh Direct. It is teensy. What was I thinking? It looks like a giant chicken. I am freezing it for a later time and buying another turkey from Paisanos now.

^^^PS, Obama bashing aside, if Jed Bartlett (The West Wing) or Andrew Shepherd (The American President) was president (both written by Aaron Sorkin), they would've summoned the union and management leaders to the White House and mediated personally to make them settle the strike and had their Labor Secretary all over this. So would Bill Clinton for that matter. That's a tangible way the President can intervene in creating, or at least saving, jobs.

***Disingenuous Preview***

Gotta go work, but remind me to opine later on how the Republicans are already shooting themselves in the foot for the 2014 and 2016 elections, putting aside the fiscal cliff:

1. Shunning and trashing blue state moderate Chris Christie
2. Trashing and opposing young African American woman Susan Rice (McCain, Graham) - not like they need those 3 demos to win
3. Golden Boy Marco Rubio won't answer question about earth's age for fear of offending creationists

Funny bones was my favorite too. Yummmm. Peanut butter loaded with sugar paste inside squishy chocolate cake covered with sugar icing. I would probably go into sugar shock if I ate that stuff now. My real favorite (I was treated DAILY to this by my little chinese girlfriend) was drakes fruit cakes. Pure sugar dripping cherry filling surrounded by sugar pastry covered by sugar glaze. Washed down by a cherry coke. No wonder I am spending all of my disposable income on dental work.

rf, I think jobs are the number one issue in this country right now and were the number one issue in the campaign. So, no, I don't think he has more important things to worry about. When monthly job numbers (gains or losses) usually number in the tens of thousands, losing 18,500 jobs is a huge issue.

So, I think Obama should've been all over this from the second it looked like Hostess would liquidate. He should've made a statement. And he should've had his Labor Secretary involved 24/7. And he should've pointed out that he was trying to save 18,500 American jobs. If a Mexican company buys Hostess, as speculated, there will be 18,500 new Mexican jobs (which will make no one happy but dave).

And, while I think his trip to Burma/Myanmar and Southeast Asia is very important, and there was absolutely no reason to cancel, the Hostess issue came up before his trip. He could've summoned the leadership to the White House and met with them for half an hour.

DH, I'm not saying Obama is so bad. I voted for him twice, even though I'm a Hillary guy the way you're a Martha guy. But, I was never one who thought he walked on water either. I think he's fallible. And, to me, this was an easy place for him to step up and show leadership. Everyone is joking about the Twinkie, but 18,500 is a lot of jobs to lose and try to replace, especially in this job market. No excuse in my opinion.

Ok, Donatella, I'm taking the bait. 127 (including 27 children) killed so far in Gaza with American-made and American-financed weapons. Your tax dollars at work! And we wonder - why do they hate us?

Furthermore, the Hamas military leader who was assassinated at the beginning of this was involved in negotiations for a long-term truce with Israel which (had they succeeded) would have enabled Hamas and Israel to share intelligence regarding rocket fire by non-Hamas groups from Gaza (which accounted for most of the rockets fired lately). Instead of continuing negotiations which would have saved Israeli lives, Netanyahu opted for assassination and war - typical of his totally reckless behavior and disregard for human life. Wait - did I mention he's up for re-election next year? Wag the dog!

Ripplewood, which was founded by Timothy C. Collins, a major Democratic donor, is expected to lose most, if not all, of the $130 million or so it invested in Hostess. The company’s lenders, led by Silver Point Capital and Monarch Alternative Capital, are not expected to fare well either.
The behind-the-scenes tale of Hostess and Ripplewood may be the opposite of a project to buy it, strip it and flip it. When Mr. Collins originally looked at Hostess, he was trying to make investments in troubled companies with union workers. He was convinced that he could work with labor organizations to turn around iconic American businesses, and he hoped Hostess would become a model for similar deals. (My emphasis.)

I got another turkey at Paisanos. I expressed horror at their price, discussed the price with fellow customers and the guy gave me a good break on the price. I also negotiated a discount on a turkey platter (thanks stoops but decided to get one) from the hardware store on Court. This is fun.

I've never been convinced to buy other than supermarket turkeys. It's all in how you cook them whether they come out juicy or not. 98% of the coutry can't cook a turkey properly. 1% can and the other 1% deep fry them and usually burn down the garage.

Actually you really don't taste the bacon and it does help in keeping them juicy but I don't do it. Jusy rub the skin with 2 tbspns each of salt and baking powder mix, cook upside down for an hour or so and then turn over. Guarsanteed crispy skin.

DCB, want to wager a pizza on Randi showing up to collect?

OK, when Randi shows up, you owe me a pizza. Until then, you dont owe me anything.

And as for Pete's comment, it is not about not sharing, it's about making sure the Pizza goes to the guy who rightfully deserves it, not the entitled whiners. (But someday I will take you and M4L out for pizza just because we are friends)

dona and Six, I agree with the Old Man (rare that it is). I've seen Gaza coverage non-stop on all the networks. That said, I had not heard or read what Six posted which I found very interesting:

"the Hamas military leader who was assassinated at the beginning of this was involved in negotiations for a long-term truce with Israel which (had they succeeded) would have enabled Hamas and Israel to share intelligence regarding rocket fire by non-Hamas groups from Gaza (which accounted for most of the rockets fired lately)."

And I have always loathed Bibi Netanyahu.

I think if the GOP wants to balance the budget and pay off the debt immediately, while simultaneously improving our quality of life, it should adopt the following law, which I will call the Spatial Intelligence Enforcement Law:

1. Anyone demonstrating lack of spatial intelligence shall be fined $50.
2. Spatial intelligence is defined as a) awareness of others' personal space, b) ability to predict others' movements in crowded spaces, c) awareness of how to keep a stream of people moving as quickly as possible.
3. Demonstrations of lack of spatial intelligence shall include but are not limited to: not moving in all the way (nh) in the subway, blocking the doors or aisles of a bus or train, sitting with one's legs spread anywhere, arms hanging over armrests into fellow passengers' seats on a plane, engaging in any of the myriad ways possible to delay the TSA lines at airports, not moving when red lights turn green, etc.

To be added:

4. The ability to turn one's shoulders quickly at a 45 degree angle to avoid another.
5. The knowledge of just HOW MUCH room your genitalia needs to air. At most a 45 degree angle.
6. The ability to mentally process and imagine that a backpack is part of your bodily dimensions.
7. The awareness that standing, holding an overhead rail and reading a book might possibly get into the facial body space of a sitting passenger.
8. The awareness that opening the New York Times full page will get into the bodily space of those around you.
9. The awareness that leaning you back and your ass against the rail claims the entire rail except for those who have to
decide to touch your body parts to get to the rail so they won't go flying.

I see Six and dona share my rants against commuters (or all travelers, it seems).

And, I'm sure I've ranted on this before, but, no, you are not allowed to read a newspaper on the subway if you have not mastered the New York subway fold (i.e., folded in half vertically, then horizontally (so it's like the size of a book), then unfolded only horizontally to do the page flip, then folded horizontally again, and so forth). And any papers not folded into the New York subway fold are rightfully torn out of your hands by other commuters.

My stuffing uses a lot of ingredients that need playing around with before it's assembled: chicken stock (that I'd made a while ago & frozen); sausage that had to be cooked; diced onions that had to be sauteed in the sausage leavings; diced celery that had to be ditto; apples that had to be pared & chopped & sauteed; mushrooms that had to be cleaned & cut & sauteed. So it's now ready to be cooked tomorrow. Anyone who's had it will tell you it is well worth the effort. All my nieces make it the same way.
