News reports don't offer the details lawyers like to see, but I glean that the 30 years is a real minimum that can't be undercut by credits for good behavior. As I posted during trial, this is why the case went to trial. Prosecutors (rightly, in my view) would not do a plea deal that would shorten the sentence below Sandusky's remaining life expectancy. But it left no reason for Sandusky not to fight.

Yeah, randi. Forget Japan.

Slopey, the sentence was 30 to 60 years. The sentence cannot be reduced under 30 years. He is effectively in prison for life. He gave a bizarre comment - it was all a plot against him. All 45 counts. And now, others including his adopted son - 9 more victims - report abuse.

The Obama "humor" about Big Bird is not quite making it. The new ad is a joke. Glad I quit giving money to them.

Randolph: chicken, i never thought that until the debate. but since then i realize how fucking stupid the american electorate is (and the media). they treat this election like its american idol or dancing with the stars. the fact that romney "looked presidential" or "sounded authoritative" somehow out weighs the fact that HE WAS TELLING LIES THE WHOLE FUCKING TIME. and dont even get me started on his foreign policy speech yesterday. the guy is seriously dangerous on foreign pollicy but since, as snoop do says, "he a white nigga", a bunch of pathetic and ignorant americans are going to vote against their and the country's interests. its all such a fucking mess it makes me want to pull my hair out. I've got one word of advice if you think Obama is going to win. BUY GOLD. Typically gold does sell off in October. it may be rolling over right now. Use any selloff to accumulate ahead of an expected win by Obama. We'll get more of the same...incoherent mid east policy, QE, debt level rising, spending rising, dollar falling. It's a perfect storm for a stronger gold price

Biden has been painted by the Republicans as a buffoon. Biden is anything but. In contrast to Obama's lack of interest in political slugfests, Biden loves it. And is very good at it. Remember Bork?
October 9, 2012 12:32 PM - Slopefarm
Dona, I say this as a partisan democrat, but I have no idea WTF Biden will say at the debate. Really shrewd and yet really gaffe prone. Very good at teeing up and pursuing a point, but on the hot seat there is no telling from one second to the next what words his brain is going to send to his mouth.
October 9, 2012 12:40 PM - DeadCatBounce
I don't think Republicans have characterized Biden as a Buffoon.
If anything, he is taken very seriously.
I am very curious to see the debate because my guess is that Biden will press Ryan hard on details.
And I think Ryan has a very good command of details, and will do well.

On another topic, ear worm alert. That new Taylor Swift song is very pernicious. Avoid at all costs. Do not crank it up, do not listen to the words, and for your own sanity, do not listen to a dozen or so 13-year old girls singing along at the top of their lungs. Whoever had the bright idea to unleash it upon the world should be drawn and quartered so they can never ever ever do anything like that again.

You've really got no concept as to how to actually "invest," do you?????????

But you've got, what, maybe 14 years until you can get your social security????? I'd be more worried about that changing.

Just had "hit and run" shoppers in here. 2 young people (25ish), guy and girl asking for a wooden keepsake box and things to put in it. Seems they are propping for a TV commercial where an old women sentimentally relives moments of her life while handling the contents of the box. They bought a ton of items and a large scrimshaw adorned horn box.

Commercial is for a pharmaceutical company. He handed me several crisp Benjamins.

dave -- Columbus Day weekend is the worst for apple picking. Every family with kids under 15 decide they need apples before they are all picked, a pumpkin and gourds for halloween, etc. Always a zoo at every orchard. Load up two weeks earlier and put them in the crisper drawer.

I saw that. Macauley is a good dance critic. Yeah, he was a bit awkward about it but basically got the review right -- a fun, varied and interesting program of dance but none of the four dance pieces were great. All good in their own way but none great. The Christopher Wheeldon piece from a week earlier was much better than the duet last friday and the modern piece set to a Gertrude Stein poem was excellent and hilarious too.

Surprised dibs hasn't googled the dance company and posted some kind of "holy shit, slopey" comment.

Well, i packed my bags and bought myself a ticket
For the land of the tall palm tree
Aloha old milwaukee, hello waikiki
I just stepped down from the airplane
When I heard her say,
"waka waka nuka licka, waka waka nuka licka
Would you like a lei? eh? "

Chorus
Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka pooka mok a wa wahini
Are the words I long to hear
Lay your coconut on my tiki
What the hecka mooka mooka dear
Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Say the words I long to hear

It's a ukelele honolulu sunset
Listen to the grass skirts sway
Drinking rum from a pineapple
Out on honolulu bay
The steel guitars all playing
While she's talking with her hands
Gimme gimme oka doka make a wish and wanta polka
Words I understand hey!

Repeat chorus

Well, I boughta lota junka with my moola
And sent it to the folks back home
I never had the chance to dance the hula
Well,i guess I should have known
When you start talking to the sweet wahini
Walking in the pale moonlight
Ohka noka whatta setta knocka-rocka-sis-boom-boccas
Hope I said it right!

Well, today's genius award goes to the guy who won a "let's eat live roaches and other bugs" contest. Soon after winning the contest which involved eating live roaches, worms, and other bugs, (I'm absolutely disgusted.) he was rushed to the hospital and died of unknown causes. An autopsy is being held, (yeah...) but doctors say that just eating roaches should not have killed him. It took place in Florida, of course. Here's the story:

Moth balls, dona! And Space Bags! You'll never have to deal with this again. It will be over soon, and you'll have learned to avoid them!

That said, I found, recently, that moths have taken some bites out of my 'great coat'. It's a very dressy long coat, which I bought for over $300 about 15+ years ago. Perry Ellis. It's lovely, but I rarely have an opportunity to wear it these days. (I sweat the whole way home on the subway thinking I should return it!) Just a couple bites, but it bummed me out. That was a lot of money for me at the time. (and is again now!)

TWC has a nerve. The internet and cable was out for 3 hours yesterday over here. AGAIN.

By the way, I made a fabulous soup. I made the chicken broth from the carcasses of 2 chickens I had roasted along with some vegetables. So that was the broth a couple of days ago. Then I used the left over over-priced rotisserie chicken from Luz, along with lots of vegetables to make chicken vegetable and it was really delicious.

"Yeah but Cobble, don't moth balls STINK? "

Yes and no. I put moth balls in my clothes closet and my coat closet. I use a small box or two, and just poke some holes in the plastic inside the box. You don't need a ton to keep them at bay. The clothes don't have to be embalmed in the stuff.

That said, you might still find one or two moths, but you won't find a whole colony living in there, either.

October 9, 2012 9:39 PM - Donatella
What, I think they got started from a rug that had been stored in a warehouse. I have an antique fur coat but strangely, that was untouched. What they DID eat with great gusto were my Born leather boots with fuzzy wool inside the boots and decorating the tops of the boots. I had to throw those out. I cleaned every blasted thing in the closet and the exterminator sprayed and put those traps around.
October 9, 2012 9:40 PM - Cobble B. Hiller

What, that answer was in response to Arkady's question.

The blanked out response was to you, What. I was saying that I had a fur coat but nothing touched that. It is an antique jacket. What they did get was a pair of Born boots that had fuzzy wool lining the was on the inside and around the top. They demolished the inside of that and I had to throw it away. And they ate a little of a nice winter wool coat. The moths originally came in on my living room rug which was stored in a warehouse for a while. They are persistent little buggers. You think you have seen the last of them and then a year later, THEY"RE BACK.

Yeah, I am getting space bags.

Guido is a nice guy. 17 years ago he left a Wall St. bank where he worked as an IT person. Bugs made him an a financially comfortable man and he is very happy he quit. He was really at his best when he helped me catch Rocky I who got into my house two years ago through my roof. It was Feb and he did 2,000 worth of damage -- he flipped out trying to get out of windows and chewed up shutters and blinds.

The little fucker also got into my pantry and opened up candy bars and ate them on my white couches. I had squirrel paw prints all over. I had no idea where he was hiding and Guido got a trap and we caught him with peanut butter and crackers. It was one of those things which was a lot funnier after we caught the bastard.
