I think he did very well. He was always on point and he had the numbers that the American people wanted to hear. Obama was much on the defensive and still came across relying on 3 issues 1. Bush got us into this, 2) I'm implementing these sorts of things (still afet 4 years) and 3) not addressing the bad record so far.

The big surprise in the debate was how BORING both candidates are. Neither of them has any charisma whatsoever.
Romney: B-
Obama: C
It is going to be a tight race and no doubt Obama will learn from his poor performance and do better next time. His biggest mistake was arguing against the Mitt plan (which he got wrong) and not focusing on his strategy and why it is best (in his opinion).
He is the incumbent after all, and should be running on his record, not so much against the other guy.

To a person, Obama's liberal media is saying that he lost the debate and Romney won, as I posted last night was my opinion as well. And I agree with everything DCB said at 7:48, especially how boring they both were.

All in all, I'd have rather gone to the Yankees game with my arch-enemy DeLepp.

1. Romney became an acceptable alternative last night

2. Romney was actually the "more likeable" of the 2 last night

3. Someone else might be able to do better and people are comfortable with that

I wonder why nobody thought of inviting "Harbinger" to the recent party. After all, new posters don't come often here these days. I'll tell you what: invite Harbinger to the next party, and I'll buy "him" a couple of drinks to show that I may be a half-wit, but I have no hard feelings.

Cobble, may I ask you to make sure that Harbinger is invited to the next get-together?

Gm, all. Yeah, what dcat and CGar said at 7:48 & 7:51. Bring your fucking A game next time, barry.

Farmhand's social studies assignment was to watch at least 30 minutes of debate, take notes on what the candidates said and notes on which things she agrees and disagrees with. She watched until 10:15. This meant: 1. Mrs. Slopey and I had to keep our editorial comments to ourselves. 2. She was perhaps the only person in a PLUSA household who watched the debate with the open mind that dcat advocated for yesterday.

This morning, farmhand was reviewing her notes and I asked her what she thought of the debate. Answers: 1. She thought Romney did a better job. 2. She agreed with more things Obama said than Romney said. 3. Of the things Romney said that she agreed with, she didn't believe half of them, but if they were true she agreed with them. 4. Romney looked angry. Obama looked tired. 5. Romney always got to speak last no matter who got to speak first. Why is that?

DeLepp- because the forces set in motion then continue to this day. They continue far beyond 4 years. And that is because the world is so complex and intertwined, that , like the sci-fi story, a butterfly dying millions of years ago changes the course of society today. (OK- a little hyperbolic, but you see the point). And if what you say is true about others in power, than obviously much of the blame for the slow recovery lies with the republicans in Congress, wouldn't you agree? I would love to hear Republicans take responsibility just once.

Dave- you are so not worth talking to because you are incapable of debating facts or ideas. All you know how to do is insult. Doesn't speak well of you.

"was how BORING both candidates are. Neither of them has any charisma whatsoever." --
Did I not pretty much say that yesterday. But to their defense....charisma is overrated.
I admit - I did watch some of it. grudgingly. Seemed to me...."okay --when can I throw in this rehearsed speech or attack." Certainly not talking off-the-cuff. All was quite practiced.

Arkady, I don't know how extensive the outage is - it isn't 100% out, it is a pixilating screen which breaks up the irregularly but enough to really be considered an outage. I think the Time Warner people are getting so much shit right now, I doubt I would get an answer from them. They just say "There is a service outage in your area". Maybe I will check their website, but I suspect that the construction over here at AY might be a factor.

Six -- per nate silver's column that I summarized yesterday, I think Romney had the performance he needed to get at least the average challenger bounce if not more. The limiting factor is fewer undecideds than usual since history suggests that's where the bump comes from.

As to the debate, yeah, Romney "won". Obama was not nearly as aggressive as he needed to be. He let Romney get in some points that were blatantly untrue, and he didn't refute them.

HOWEVER, my fave part of the evening was still seeing Romney reclaim his health plan, something he had run from like the plague for the last year, because his far right masters demanded it. I wonder how much trouble he's going to be in with them now? He was flip-flopping like a fish on a hook.

I don't hate the guy, although I disagree with him on almost everything. I think it's sad that moderates like Romney and McCain have to embrace the Dark Side in order to get their party's nomination, turning them from decent candidates to what they are in today's elections. I think that weakness, and ego-driven desire to be president, no matter what it costs them personally, is their downfall. Obama better come out with guns blazing next time. I would imagine his people are all over him now, telling him that.

""The likelihood of James Bond having chlamydia is extremely high," says Dr Sarah Jarvis, a general practitioner and regular guest on the BBC's The One Show. "If he came to my clinic I would definitely advise him to have an STI test."

A concerned friend might worry about his mental condition, too.

While a string of temporary sexual encounters might appear glamorous on celluloid, in contemporary reality this fear of commitment and resistance to emotional intimacy might trigger worry in a normal social circle."

dibs, no one's debating you about the debate. We're dealing with it. Quick question, though: do you think it is possible to lower every income tax rate by 20%, make that revenue neutral by closing deductions, and not have middle income people pay more in income taxes? And if you can, then how does lowering the top rate to help small businesses help them -- particularly those top 3% of small busineeses that employ everyone -- if they are going to pay the savings back in reduced deductions?

Romney did a great job of shifting the campaign back towards one of referendum and away from one of choice of direction. He also did a good job articulating his side on the choice, but it remains built on a major fudge (no, not brownies, m4l). Why is it that all the people getting those blender drinks get green ones? Some people mix green things and red things and they get these brown vegetable smoothies with brown foam.

"cloth bags"

Who would have thought The What is halfway to being either a food coop member or a CSA locavore chef? But good for you. Mrs. Slopey gets mad at me when I forget to take a cloth bag to the store and come home with some C-Town plastic. But I always take cloth bags to the CSA pick-up.

Probably is possible but the question is too broad. It's just math. You can take from one box and add to another and make it revenue neutral by working with all the numbers.

"It's just math. You can take from one box and add to another and make it revenue neutral by working with all the numbers."

That's the fundamental difference between the right and the left. It's not just math, it's people. It's the difference between having a school lunch program, or being hungry all day, and incapable of learning. It's the difference between having programs that work with people to lift them out of poverty, or just saying, "I made it, you must be a lazy bum, because you can't. No programs for you, you're on your own," It's a fundamental difference in the idea of the role of government.

And it has very little to do with "entitlements" a word that has no real basis in people's reality. It's about a government that should be caring as much about its citizens as it cares about balancing the books.

Actually, MM, my point is the math. It is a separate question from what he has said he would cut. I don't think it can be revenue neutral. I don't think you can cut the rates that much without socking it to the middle class in the form of eliminating deductions they currently take. I am not aware anyone has shown how it could work the way Romney says and lots have said it can't. It is not hard to put numbers to these things.

So apart from the more ideological question of whether deficit reduction should rely on some restoration of Clinton-era tax rates at the high end, I think there's snake oil in the tax plan itself. If I'm wrong it can be easily dispelled.

It was a hole in the wall and everything was AMAZING. Delicious. Super cheap. and I had Turkish coffee, which was pretty good if you like it.....it is drinking the actual coffee not the brew. I went with Layla and her ex-husband, who ordered for us. I'll let you know the name when I go by there again. This one was just West of Court, on basement level, south side of the street. The storefront I always thought was a front was India House on 7th Ave at 7th Street. That restaurant was there for at least fifteen years and almost no one ever ate there. Certainly not twice. No one ordered takeout from them, either. Place always empty, even on a Saturday night. No idea what it was a front for, but it certainly could not pay rent on earnings from the menu.

What deductions do you think he's looking at, or do you think it is the total cap he's been talking about lately? The latter would not accomplish the benefit you mention. The former would be a simplification, yes, and I take it you think that is of real value independent of how the numbers work.

Yes Slopey. I also understood him to say that the deductions that directly benefit small businesses would stay in place.
Small businesses have contracted sharply in the last 4 years, while the five largest banks have gotten bigger.
Whatever the rhetoric from Obama, his policies have delivered the opposite of his stated goals.
And also, yes, I think that simplificartion of the tax code would be a tremendous benefit to everyone who pays taxes (except my accountant).

They were offered free HBO or something, but they declined and were bitching about the high cost and their next bill was lower. I don't have the details but see if you can get something out of them for your poor service. Worth a shot.

Donatella, your alternative for content is limited to them or the dish networks (don't think Fios will draw line into your house). on internet access, you have verizon DSL and clear wireless hotspot

Eva, one TV is high def, one isn't and all are a mess right now. I really don't want to go through the hassle of changing and when they fix this (and get a few phone lines free) I am going to do my outraged consumer routine and get my overall package lowered in price. I am sure I am being gouged with an old package.

You can still watch the regular channel on an HD TV. When TBS or TNT has the pixilating stuff, I'll put on channel 3 instead of 703, etc. But if the non HD isn't working either, then yeah, your service is awful. Very frustrating, I'm sure.

I'm miffed that FIOS isn't more widely available. I'd ditch TWC in an instant. Sucks big time. DVR system is the worst. And getting rid of whole home DVR - I don't want to have to go into dave's room to record a show and not be able to pause something in my room if it's not already recording. What a stupid design. I'm likely to bite the bullet and pay to use TiVo's tried and true infinitely better DVRs and guides.

Yep, that's one of the big issues, Eva. That and having to go upstairs to dave's room anytime I want to program anything - no need for whole house DVR, would rather individual recorders in each room. Maybe I lack a conspiracy gene, but I could give a shit about sock puppets and this kind of stupidity.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I have my own kind of hazmat situation. I had to empty absolutely everything from my closet and clean it after Guido's pheromone and poison moth treatment. This is like Hercules and the Aegean stables. I am now down to 18 pairs of shoes after throwing out many pairs and the beautiful Born furry boots that the blasted moths did a job on. I am bringing coats and some stuff to the cleaners, but the rest is getting the Dryel home drycleaning treatment in my dryer. Then I have to put everything in garment bags. This was after a stern lecture from Guido who I am convinced is my the ghost of Mother Past in disguise. He said I need to make "lifestyle" changes and start vacuuming my closet floor once a week and get rid of clutter, defined as "things which touch one another".

I would recommend Rubbermaid snap-able clear plastic for cash. My brother-in-law's sister (what does that make her to me) was married to a man who made a lot of money in the restaurant business and ahem, was storing a lot of his earnings in suitcases. She got a divorce and got a favorable settlement when she took one of the suitcases to Long Island Sound and started crumpling dollar bills and throwing them off her boat with him on the shore. The settlement was NOT done in the courts. To this day, she does a very large number of transactions in cash.

If I remember correctly i think he said it was the anniversary of some point in their relationship, not the day they married. And no- it won't cost him the women's vote.

Muggy day pondering, non-sequiter alert....

Still on economics......

Check Prof Quiggin's work on "Trickle-down economics: the idea that policies that benefit the well-off will ultimately help everyone."

He's down under, U of Queensland, AU.

The following written in 1965, inspired by ginsberg

"Now at midnight all the agents, and the super human crew
Come out and round up everyone that knows more than they do.
Then they bring them to the factory where the heart attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders and then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles by insurance men who go
Check that to see that nobody is escaping to Desolation Row"

I just wanna get out of here.

If you think you're middle-class, you may want to come with....

I'm keeping this online for the benefit of those as confused as I am.

Penguin, by your denying complicity, "No, I did not" (conspire with Partridge), you are propagating an insane falsehood that I was the ringleader of a plot to out The What. I'm saying you are lying NOT because you did conspired with me, but because you know that NO conspiracy took place!

This is insane! Are you nuts? As you all read from my e-mail that The What reposted months ago, I invited him to join us all at Montero's back in July. That is my indiscretion that you don't care to be associated with because you really like The What? Come on, CGar! I expected a response from you more like that of your e-wife's which expressed puzzlement in this insanity.

You want to kiss up to What today, be my guest. You know I'll be batting my eyelashes at him in the very near future!

I had moths. They ate stuff. Then I had to call Guido. Who put poison and moth sex hormones in my closet. And told me it was my fault. All this, after I had to take EVERYTHING out of there. Now everything has to be cleaned. Guido, who is a scary clean freak, said I had to vacuum my closet floor once a week or the dust balls would be ruin my life and the moths would never go away. He told me I had to change my life, and put things in plastic. I am now a tiny figure, lying on my bed with my laptop, dwarfed by a mountain range of this stuff.

Oh God help me.
