I've met a few pricks in my life.

I actually had a boss who kept a voodoo doll on her desk with a container of pins next to it. I found this to be less than reassuring.

Syurprisingly, given the industry I worked in, I never worked for any pricks at all. A lot fewer pricks on the buy side.

What do you mean by legal separation???? Many firms have both a buys side and a sell side. There is definitely a Chinese wall between them, even greater than the one on the sell side between analysts and inverstment banking

dave, am wondering if a person can have a duo role of buy and sell. I'm aware of the buy & sell side groups are separated by the chinese wall. am just wondering if a person can have both gig - albeit the skill set is very different

"am wondering if a person can have a duo role of buy and sell"

Not at the same time. I used to be sell-side and now am buy-side - the skills sets aren't that different but there are subtleties in each side that would not translate to success in the other side. (eg sell-side is all about telling an interesting and believable story).

Dave, the reason I'm doubting it is push ups are most effective when doing them slowly and I can't see him busting out 150 slowly in 1 set. I could see him doing that in 5 sets of 30

150 in one set is hard but not impossible. A few years back I started doing the hundred pushup challenge (http://hundredpushups.com/) and I got to the point where I could just about do it but I'm old and unfit. Once you stop though it all goes to pot - I reckon I could probably only do 50-60 in one hit now.

dave, I have no pride. You can buy my apartment, and I don't care who says that to me. I'll gladly be kept. And I'll wear the chauffeur's costume. (Recall, I had to wear a Phillip Morris costume to deliver videos in college.)

If you want, you and chicken can split the purchase of my apartment, inasmuch as you will be sharing the upstairs.

1) People wanted a gathering outside of PS or BH.
2) A small group did a pub crawl in FG and CH to identify a venue. They chose Rope
3) As a result there was a big gathering at Rope.

"I had a good time at that Rope gathering."

We did have a gathering at Rope. Snaps was on crutches, and someone else was injured as well. Wasder was there, me and BH, it was a medium sized gathering. And I think etson is correct, it was summertime, and Arkady is right, we sat in the garden.

Hello all from Dushanbe. Have to get up for a 5:40 am flight to Istanbul (it's 10:46 now). Am debating whether to sleep or not.

Biff, DH, and I scouted a bunch of locations for that Rope gathering. As I remember Rope was something of a dark horse based on reviews but when we walked in, we all thought "This is the place." Although there was that one venue where everyone was smoking pot at a baby shower...

Yes, m4l, my first big gathering was at Ellis.

My first gathering was an Off-the-OT with Biff, DeLepp, DH, Kens, SixYears, Snark and wasder. I should've quit while I was ahead.

SixYears was the first PLUSA I met.

PB, I registered over there in June 2006 when I was HOTD, but then didn't really post again until late 2008, when the election was over and Eva asked what I was going to do to fill the void.

I was not in the OT, though, until mid-July 2009. Was posting with some of you in other threads because I couldn't figure out the OT and didn't know what the hell you all where plathering on about all day (the more things change . . . ).

First gathering I saw discussed in the OT was Dress Barn, to which Biff invited me, but I recoiled in horror at the thought because I didn't want to meet any of you in person. Always go with your original instinct.

At the risk of one of dave's anti-semitic, anti-Democrat diatribes, the health insurance companies in this country should be nationalized and the entire system reformed to make it easier for people to get the care they need. As it is, it's too easy for the insurance companies to game the system and deny people coverage and throw up hurdles to make it impossible to get the coverage one requires.

I remember the gathering at Rope. It was the first time I ever talked to Arkady and Jester. Noki was there, and Rob literally fell out in the street and had to be dragged to the curb before he got killed. I think Mopar helped him to the curb. Amzi was there, too, and he, DeLepp, M4L, Bxgrl and I all walked over to Clinton Avenue, and some of us got the train home. I have a very good memory, since I don't get overly sloshed. Americans throw away 40% of their food . . .

So, if those dates aren't safety dates, how are we supposed to know how long something is good to eat, without eating it and getting sick or at least having it taste disgusting???

"In the United States, we see them as safety dates but they’re actually not safety dates. And these dates are not regulated federally for the most part," Gunders said. "They are meant to indicate the manufacturers’ suggestion for peak quality rather than anything that would indicate the food is actually going bad. So a lot of people just throw it out after that date, not understanding that."

I don't know this Aiken guy at all but I did hear the interview where he used the word "legitimate" and I think this is much ado about nothing. he didn't say there were "non-legitimate rapes."

I believe what he was trying to communicate was that when there was an actual rape as opposed to consensual sex. No more no less. Of course, since he's Republican, the media jumped all over and put words in his mouth, which weren't there, even between the lines.

DIBS, Akin is a neanderthal if he thinks that women's bodies, when they are raped, can 'shut down' the process of getting pregnant. Please don't stand up for this guy, I'll lose what little respect I have left for you.
Edited at August 22, 2012 5:23 PM

Uh... His comment was that when there was 'legitimate' rape that the female body would magically prevent pregnancy by itself, and therefore that all those women who were raped and became pregnant were therefore NOT actually ('legitimately') raped. I believe there's some saying about adding insult to violent physical assault and psych trauma?

Well, don't let us confuse you with the facts!

This is what he said:
“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

Precisely. If he said "I think abortion is an abomination before god," I'd think he was a moron, but lots of people would agree with him, some of them respectable. Saying "people who get pregnant after they were raped weren't really raped" is just evil, and saying "the female body prevents pregnancy if there's rape involved" demonstrates mind-boggling stupidity.

Hence the controversy. It's not about him being anti-choice, it's about him being an asshole and an imbecile.

BHS, so you would be ok with a law blocking other people from having abortions? Or you just won't ever countenance it in your own life/relationships?

"I fully support a total ban on abortion discussions, with no exceptions for any reason."

"So ban discussion of Akin's asinine remarks? Sorry, do that & I'm out of here."

"I think he is kidding, Arkady. Aren't you, Scott? Abortion may go against your personal beliefs, but discussing it or the statements made by politicians about it, should not be taboo."

I hope Scott is kidding. I skipped virtually the entire abortion discussion earlier - I have my personal views but zero interest in discussing them here - just as I skip virtually all of the political debates. But, the abortion debate is inextricably linked to political debates, and once you start down the road of banning a topic for discussion, where will it end?

Personally, I don't think any topic should be banned in the OT (much as I don't support the ban of any posters). We've been having this same discussion for years, and, in my view, not that this is news or any surprise, I think people should simply not read any posts on any topics or by any people that they find personally offensive. No one is forcing anyone to read anything, nor is anyone forcing any one to engage with anyone they don't like.

I think banning (censoring) certain topics, as well as people, is a slippery slope and a bad precedent. For better and for worse, *rob* is gone and the What is gone and benson is gone. Yes, I know that some of those were self-imposed bans, and I'm NOT blaming anyone for any of it. I'm merely expressing my opinion that I'm sorry that they are gone.

Legion, while busy, appears to have stopped posting. Jackal, while he's told me he's busy at work, has stopped posting, but perhaps there are other reasons. I don't encourage anything that will stifle debate or drive any more posters away.

If that's the consensus, I'll abide by it. As I said when we had this discussion about banning people a few weeks back, friendships made on the blog no longer need the blog to survive and thrive. It's just a nice central location to check in with everyone at once and to take desperately need breaks at work when time allows. But, the earth will continue to revolve around the sun, and I will survive if that's what ends up happening.

My two cents FWIW.

I don't think Scott is serious, CGar. I agree with you, though I wouldn't post about abortion here since I have spent years working through my thinking on this and have pretty much explained it here. I have offered people in the past an offline explanation of my pro-life views. Not everything lends itself well to discussion here.

That said, I hope rob is ok. I wasnt here for the blowoff stage, but rob didnt seem to me to be in a good place and the posting when i took a break seemed to have been really different from before. I cannot comment on what got him kicked off since i wasnt here. I think that Benson is one of the most interesting people here (even if he irrationally calls me disingenuous) and so is Legion. I worry about rob too.
I do get tired of double standard and playing favorites claims when I have explained my reasoning many times.
I used to like both Legion and Benson until they started their little personal crusades against me and kept calling me a liar both directly and indirectly.

I love my current apartment building, with all of its convenience and staff to take care of stuff for me.

We had a new house built in a cookie-cutter suburb of Birmingham by a huge national builder.
I think the most stressful two hours of my life was the meeting with the design person where we had to select the color of every wall, carpet, tile, counter, cabinet, stair rail, mantle, brick, shingle, toilet, and I think electrical socket in the house.

Picking fixtures and stuff for this place was very consuming and wearing. I made so many decisions - everyday spending money on something or other. It was fun, but unbelievably time consuming. I probably spent the most time and energy on the kitchen. I hated what I ordered when I saw it and thanks to my contractor starting to nail it in the wall before I saw it, I had a hellacious time with Home Depot which would NOT take them back. (Kraftmaid). On top of being ugly, they were poorly painted with bad carpentry. I caused a major stink but they wouldn't take them back. They finally replaced every cabinet with new ones (no flaws) and reduced the price by 50%. And with the right countertop and hardware, the final product was ok. What a battle though.

I looked at all 50,000 swatches on the paint wheel partridge loaned me. Then picked up those I liked best on 3 or 5 swatch cards at the hardware store. Now I'm physically cutting off the ones I'm eliminating. Makes it easier. Then, Arkady, I'll throw them down the stairs and let the chips fall where they may.

I used to do that w/ term papers - write thoughts on individual file cards & toss them up the stairs & assemble the paper in the order in which they fell.

Yeah, ick on the exposed cords etc. the contractor F'd up on two of the tv locations so I now have to figure out how best to re-route them or hide them behind cord covers

CGar, don't panic. Ifte will paint swatches on the wall and if you don't find one that you like, you'll pick 4 more. It can be hard to tell until you see it in the space.

Scott that sounds like a nightmare to me too. I'd have had a panic attach.

Donna, glad you won that battle with HD. A fight worth having, for sure.

OK, my son is successfully in bed.
Tonight was much better than last night, although we got some news from Wendy that was a bit upsetting to him.
I think the joint run soon after I got home was a good idea. Physically wear him out and get his mind off other stuff.

It was a great idea to run with him. It's not just wearing him out, it's just good to do stuff with you, to spend time together.

Sorry about the bad news, hope it wasn't *that* bad.

Most of the Toronto suburbs consist of developments that look just like that, Scott - Richmond Hill, Brampton, Mississauga, Markham etc.
Not cheap here either. House like that would be $700,000-$1.5mm depending on the location.

It was 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2500+ sqft, plus 2 car garage and storage/utility room off the garage on 1/3 acre in a planned development that included a lake, pool, and tennis court (all located in the more expensive section)
I think the base price was $208K, and we ended up paying $221K in 1999.
Half the difference was putting in 24 inch tile instead of carpeting for most of the downstairs.
Around $1000 was for me to have multiple network cables run to every room, with a makeshift wiring closet under the stairs.

Last time I looked up resell prices in the development, they were around $260K.

I would probably still be living in that house if the company I worked for had not been bought out by a bigger company in Houston.
I did not care much for Houston itself, but I did fall in love with a more urban lifestyle, and that is when I decided that I wanted live in New York City eventually.

Back then, that house was paradise for me, but I don't think I could ever go back to that lifestyle.

And here is a sample of the bland design we went with inside.

I don't hate Houston, it just was not good for me - largely because of the climate.

We went with a very beige color scheme for most of the house. I'm sure we agonized between 8 similar beige's before picking that one, but I have blocked all memories of that painful experience, including the name.
We did the master bedroom in a light green that I was unsure of at first, but grew on me.
The biggest mistake we made was going for tile instead of hardwoods for the main living areas. Tile looked great in the model home, but was not as nice to live with constantly.

Since I am walking down memory lane, here is our townhouse in Houston. Ugly outside, but very nice inside, and less than two miles from the heart of downtown in a nice neighborhood. 3 bed, 2.5 bath, 2000 sqft + 2 car garage, 2 balconies, patio, and miniscule back yard for $190K in 2001.

I lived in Montrose, 1 block form Montrose and 2 blocks from Westheimer.

For those that don't know Houston, Montrose had the reputation for the being the "gay" neighborhood, although I would guess around 15% of the population was actually Homosexual.
Watching people reaction when I told them where we lived was a usually a good way of telling where they stood on the social axis of the political spectrum.

And her is an inside view, with the previous owner's furniture and paint colors.

Neutrals are harder, CGar. Don't be shocked if they all look too dark or more colorful than you thought. Once they are on the wall you will know.

Arkady, that is the lesson I learned in Houston. We were one block away from a Wallgreens and 2 blocks from a Kroger supermarket.
The 7 years I lived in Los Angeles I hated the fact that the only thing I could walk to in less than 20 minutes was a gas station and a pizza place.

My place in Houston had 10 foot ceilings downstairs, except for over the dining area where it went all the way to the roof with skylights.
On moving in, there was the issue that mold had developed around the skylights and I had to pay painters to get all the way up there to take care of it.
A month later, tropical storm Allison came to town, and there was a lot of leaking around the skylights.

Etson, I spent many nights at the restaurants along Kirby, both before and after I moved to Houston. The company I worked for in Birmingham had a large office in Houston's Greenway Plaza, and I averaged around one trip a month there several years.

And one more memory of Houston - Trying to hold back the waters from Tropical Storm Allison as it made its way into my house before we were fully moved in.
No wonder I did not end up liking the city.
