How do you thank everyone who had anything to do with the wonderful party last night? We had the best time!!! I just read the book, and am still crying. You are a wonderful group of people, and I am happy and proud to call you all friends. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. As James Brown would say, "HUH!"

I had a thought that this might be a good place to post this:

We're looking for someone for the 2012-2013 school year to pick up The Champs from our neighbourhood school and bring them back home and watch them for a couple of hours each day. If they go to an after school program, then the pickup would likely be 5 or 6 and someone will be home by 7 or 8 (very latest). There may be days (not sure yet) that pickup could be at 3pm, depending on how much of the after school program we do and whatever school teams they may join.

The kids are self sufficient (much moreso than I am) and the sitter doesn't need to do much other than watch them do their homework and have dinner.

If anyone knows of someone - student, recent grad, or other - who may be interested, please email me at biffchampion at yahoo dot com

Thanks!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iarUHZJ9sCk&feature=player_embedded

Everyone should have a look at this video. It is of a stop-and-frisk turned arrest in Sunset Park. It is being hailed by the masses as police abuse and the poster child of why S&F is a bad thing. Others are defending the cop in the video, saying he did the right thing because the 'perp' resisted arrest after having jumped the turnstile, refused to produce I.D., and refused to listen to the orders of the officer. Apparently this guy has a lengthy arrest record for minor infractions, but I'm going to go ahead and deem that irrelevant, as the cop in question likely didn't know that as this situation went down. Watch the video and be sure to rewind after you see the tackle. Why did the cop tackle him? What do you think happened? Does video really show you everything?

video is distrurbing with all the "can't wait to pay a chiropractor pants". Why cop tackled kid is beyond me, but kid should have realized that cop was a giant and crap happens when police get involved.

July 27, 2012 11:13 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
DeLepp, I had to rewind several times, but each time it seemed to me that the kid reacted, quite involuntarily, to the cop grabbing at his balls (when the kid went on his tippy toes). The fact that the cop waited a few seconds to body slam him troubled me and I can't figure out why that was. The audio in that part is muffled (at least to my ears it is) so I don't know what was said if anything between them, but that bugs me.

But why did the cop initially run down the platform and target that guy?
#90
July 27, 2012 11:21 AM - DeLepp
snaps, I'm sure that was a involuntary movement to the search. Should cop have known that is the reaction he would have gotten, for sure, but since what transpired verbally is inaudible, tough to say why tackle happened.
#91
July 27, 2012 11:21 AM - Slopefarm
Yeah snaps -- a very sudden escalation. I wish I could hear what each was saying right before it happened. My thought was that the tackle was in response to something the kid said, not the earlier involunatary twitch. There was a delay and something happened that we can't see.

#93
July 27, 2012 11:22 AM - Slopefarm
Yeah, my question, too, dibs. Two people had their iphones out videoing the incident well before the tackle. They must have thought something was going on.
#94
July 27, 2012 11:24 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
Yes, for sure this is one time where seeing is not enough to believe. I also need to hear. Was there a request for the kid to get down on the ground and the kid said no, thus the tackle? Did the cop just suddenly go into dick mode and tackle? Who knows?
#95

July 27, 2012 11:33 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
Dave, I tend to think so, too, but others say a ticket/fine/etc. is the norm in that situation and would have sufficed, but if he refused to show I.D. as alleged, then an arrest is necessary as you can't issue a ticket in that situation. So many things are up in the air about this.
July 27, 2012 11:38 AM - etson
"Promising London would deliver, the Prime Minister said it had been challenging to host an Olympics in one of the world's busiest cities rather than the “middle of nowhere”, where it would be easier.
This was widely taken in the US to be a reference to Utah, the sparsely populated western state where Mr Romney was chief executive of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002." (Daily Telegraph)

I have little doubt that Cameron and Boris (who hate each other, btw) would support Romney, though.
Both are Conservatives, Boris is to the right of Cameron on most issues.
July 27, 2012 11:43 AM - Slopefarm
Agreed, etson. As Dave Weigel points out in Slate, that's what makes this a real gaffe as opposed to all the manufactured ones and phoney outrage we've been seeing lately on both sides through the selective editing and use of video clips. Cameron and Boris would be allied politically with Romney but were really pissed off about this.

Don't know why - would not say that one is massively more political than the other.

Well, the real problem is that he should not have been emphasizing a message about his skill in managing the Olympics. Whether intended or not, this was a diplomacy audition. First chance to watch him on a world stage. Not the way you want to start. When I first visited the future Mrs. Slopey's mother's house, I didn't make disparaging remarks about the decor.
July 27, 2012 12:11 PM - Slopefarm
Not that there was anything wrong with my MIL's taste in furniture. She actually had quite an eye for Danish modern furniture, and some really good pieces from Nakasima that are prolly worth a lot now.
July 27, 2012 12:13 PM - Arkady
Love Geo. Nakashima's stuff!
July 27, 2012 12:15 PM - Slopefarm
Yeah, Mrs. Slopey's mom bought a few pieces roughly 50 years ago -- a desk, a cabinet/sideboard, etc. 20-30 minutes right up the road from them in New Hope.
July 27, 2012 12:40 PM - Partridge
Looks can be deceiving, we know. I reserve the right not to comment on the video without hearing what was being said by the two parties. Could go either way in my mind with the limited evidence. (Fair juror, don't ya think?)

Looks can be deceiving, we know. Slopey, for your further edification on the subject of my automobile and it's seemingly compact size vis-a-vis it's owner, I'll have you know that of the many features used to select my car, it's overall length was primary. [Snicker, snicker.] Additionally, multi-directional, electronic seat adjustability combined with telescopic and tilt steering colunm, made the 2000 Jetta VR6, the choice for me!

Looks can deceiving. "but a few more inches would have been nice". Agreed, Cobble.

Arkady -- one thing when New Hope got all artsy. Another when it got to be an overcrowded weekend and daytrip tourist haven for people thinking they are experienceing the artsy that is no longer there.

Great thai restaurant and antiquing in Lambertville, though.

DCat -- he hasn't posted here today. I suspect he lurked at the party and got blind drunk and now can't get out of bed. that's my theory, anyway.

BTW, I did go to the Vanguard to see Barry Harris trio this week. Nice show, and he's got quite a wit. Among the audience was the daughter of the famous jazz baroness, baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter. The baroness was a major figure on the 50s jazz scene. She also more or less took care of Monk through much of his last decade. Many tunes written after her -- Pannonica, Nica's dream, etc.

SLOPEY, speaking of "moonfaces", Legion posted this one Sunday, when you perhaps didn't see it, by Kurt Andersen, NYPost (pg 2)-

"Who are the most absurd people in NYC right now, and why?
* The person who opened the shop in Brooklyn devoted to artisanal mayonnaise, which reminds me of the brilliant 1978 “SNL” sketch about
the shop that sells nothing but Scotch tape."
http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/my_new_york_kurt_andersen_2ZxqHoc7X8SQ7TtYE4c71L

I've never liked coffee or pistachio. I like berry flavors -- strawberry, black raspberry, Blue marble berries & cream; mint chip; dulce de leche (surprised you don't like that one, dibs).

Farmhand likes Uncle Louie G's "birthday cake" flavor, which recreates the flavor of blue, yellow & pink cake icing. Yuck.

I didn't think I would watch the Olympic opening ceremony but I now have to see the scene with James Bond and the Queen..

"We cut to a pre-prepared film of James Bond (as played by Daniel Craig) visiting Buckingham Palace to see the Queen (as played, rather astoundingly, by the Queen). Bond, it seems, has come to escort Her Majesty to the Olympic Park and they opt to travel via helicopter.
Praise be: at no point does the Queen attempt to push Bond from the chopper. At no stage does she confess that she's actually a deep-cover KGB agent with a wicked plan to take over the planet from her base in Balmoral. Instead she graciously allows herself to be escorted right into the heart of the Olympic stadium. And at this point she leaps out and floats down with a Union Jack parachute." (The Guardian)

Ok so....... So what?

Good luck to Montrose and bxgrl!!!

With Lesbiman's schedule I'd be pretty bitchy (&, to pre-empt dibs, I'll change that to 'even bitchier.)

Ah, sorry 'bout that, but to be expected after being with his mother. Must be difficult for him. : (

Finally home after a long and somewhat frustrating day at work followed up by a nice evening and dinner at a friend's house.
I had a wonderful time last night - sorry I had to leave early but my son was feeling sick and wanted his dad to be home with him when he threw up.
He had a wonderful time today with his new friend to hang out with him during the day.

Thought the opening ceremony was very good (apart from Paul McCartney who was dreadful as usual).
Just looked up Danny Boyle's bio (the director). Always assumed he was Scottish and never heard him speak, but he's from about 20 miles away from me on the other side of Manchester.
