OK, let's not rewrite history, here. As I recall, the comment threads over there were quite robust until the OT was killed. That was true during the various bannings and unbannings of REYKW, aka The What, aka The Return of the What, etc. Very significant fall off in comment activity immediately after the end of the OT, so much so that Mr. B has come over here (nh) on occasion to try to encourage some of us to post more over there. What's exile over there, whether self-imposed or not, is not what has sucked the life out (nh) of the comments.

OK, I said I would post on this and was in meetings outof the office Friday, so here goes. Farmhand and about 20 other kids from camp were in a singing group that sang the national anthem to kick off Marty Markowitz's Coney Island concert series. The kids did great -- three part harmony in some sectons, they really sounded good.

We stayed for some of the show -- four disco acts. We had seats in the VIP section near the stage. First a commebnt about the acts, then about the Markowitz operation. We only managed to stay for two acts as it was a late night and the farmhand had camp the next day. We saw Rose Royce (Car Wash) and the Trammps (Disco Inferno). Both appeared with only the shell of what they used to be, and with canned music, though neither act lip synched. The canned music was pretty low fi. The female lead for RR and the two sequined back-up guys could sing pretty well, but most of the non-Car Wash material was pretty lame. The trammps had 3-4 of the original guys from way back, one of whom sang bass but coul dno longer find the right notes. It was touching that they featured him a bit anyway. Trammps lost their primary lead singer earlier this year. What I liked is that you coul dstill hear the vocal group they were when they started -- often the canned music would fade but they would keep singing about 10 seconds or so.

The other thing about the Trammps is how much their oeurve makes clear the way disco evolved from Philly soul. Musically, the line between the two styles is more blurry than most people remember, and some tunes now considered part of the disco canon were really Philly sound songs that started using a beat that we alter recognized as disco. Later disco sounds more distinct, but the genre did not emerge out of nowhere.

Unfortunately, we did not stay for the Village People and Gloria Gaynor, though I heard the power went out during the VP's set.

Markowitz post to follow.

Just in my family alone, we have disagreed/questioned different treatment, etc. by doctors, and have been proven to be right. Its so important to speak up if something doesn't make sense. I'm not referring to this little boy, just in general. I mentioned a few months ago, that my niece was sick and my sister had her to the doctor several times over the course of a week. I kept saying, check her appendix. The doctor said that's not it. I kept hounding my sis until she demanded more tests. Well guess what? It was her appendix. She had one symptom that didn't fit, so they brushed it off.

I agree. Despite my insistence, I was misdiagnosed when I had a febrile seizure in 2001, in my doctor's waiting room, when I was running a fever of nearly 105. I've always run really high fevers and had febrile seizures as a child.

So, I was rushed to LICH by ambulance (where LICH almost killed me). And I told the neurologist that I was certain it was a febrile seizure. No, it was not, he insisted. He insisted it was either MS, a brain tumor or epilepsy, and settled on epilepsy.

He re-ran the tests a year later and determined it had been a febrile seizure.

Yeah, Lin overplayed his hand. Yes, there is a small chance that he will turn out to be great and signing Felton instead will be like the Mets Ryan-Fregosi trade, but $14 mil for a guy who played 20-some-odd amazing games then wrecked his knee right after the basketball world figured out they could neutralize him by making him go left (no trostsky) seems absurd.

Felton's not great, but worked a good pick and roll with Amar'e. Not a bad choice to keep both Amare and Melo happy and scoring.

I've had excellent experiences at NYU - both for myself & for friends. The surprising thing about the recent tragedy is that Langone had put procedures in place specifically to deal w/ the kind of episode that occurred. Their overall ratings wrt to handling infections has been better than most other places.
#87
July 16, 2012 11:00 AM - More4Less
both knicks and Lin played with fire and now will have to face the consequences. it was widely rumored Lin was all set to sign a $24M 4 yr contract if knicks offered it but knicks told him to go shop himself around for an offer from another team which they'll then match. Even when it was rumored Raptors or Rockets could give Lin this poison pill back-loaded contract, Knicks didn't give him that $24M deal. when rockets offered such a back-loaded deal to another player, knicks still wasn't believing they would offer same to Lin. so it's really not a huge surprise, Rockets offered this contract to Lin. Knicks had ample oppty to sign the dude at a friendlier deal but chose to roll the dice and now got burned. Lin prefers to stay in NYC but he's delusional to expect this after he secretly negotiated this latest back-loaded deal - Dolan felt betrayed and this new deal is crazy expensive for knicks to match - over-the-cap tax is like 3:1 or something stiff like that.

Lin is good and would make knicks better with than without him but he aint good enough to get us to trophy. I aint about getting better while the 2 pricey stars are on the team. It's trophy or bust.

slopey, it aint the $14-15M 3rd yr salary that's scaring Dolan from matching. it's the 3:1 over-the-cap tax penalty. add another 43-44M for tax penalty, not even lebron is worthy paying that much

My attempt at a lengthy post on this earlier ended up blank.

I will post separately about the concert.

I know, Lin, poison pill. You need four skills to run an NBA team: 1. General management ability; 2. understand how to assess and value NBA talent and what makes a team good; 3. Cap accountancy -- you need to know how the cap works in all it's detail and know what repercussions a particular signing will have on the overall team and its future; 4. a talent for poker. The Lin fiasco shows deficiencies on all four.
#91
July 16, 2012 11:09 AM - Not_Logged_In
Randolph: you know now that i think about it M4L is right- Lebron isnt even worth that overt the cap tax.....so there is no way Dolan will NOT do the deal. if it costs a shit ton of money and makes little to no basketball sense it must be right for the knicks.

Eva -- We only stayed for Rose Royce (Car Wash) and the Trammps (Disco Inferno), Late night as it was by the time we got home. Both groups appeared with the remaining shards of their 70s lineup, and with canned music, though neither lipsynched. Like showing up to do karaoke of your own songs. Both groups could still sing (except one poor soul, who sings bass for the Trammps and can't really hold a note steady anymore). I did like that the Trammps did not know when the taped music would fade and would keep singing a few seconds a capella at the end of each song. You could still hear the sweet soul singing group they were when the started 40-odd years ago. Great a capella break on Hold Back the Night, which I think is an underrated song from the early Philly soul era.

They set up a little elevated dance floor off to the side and all the kids went there right away once Rose Royce started. One little kid fell, and the security folks made all the kids leave the stage (I imagine they feared liability).

Some performers need to go sit down. Others, with a trace of their old stuff, are great to watch. My husband is very into doo-wop stuff. We've seen so many old groups, some are still amazing.

Actually, I thought it was kind of sweet that the Trammps were carrying their originals, not just passing off a bunch of nephews and outsiders as the original group. More of a tribute than an attempt at a relevant or an engaging show today. the three remaining members of Rose Royce could all sing well, but its not really Rose Royce anymore. The canned music wasn't even that close to the original -- souped up a bit with synths.

Legion, Pete, Partridge,

went to look at your kitchen pics from yesterday and they look nice. I think I know which one Legion was referring to as his inspiration - ie was someone who did her aptmt in carroll garden. I wanted white cabs & dark counter but wife over-ruled me and went with the opposite color scheme - chocolate cabs plus white counters.

Forgot to post this last week. I don't remember when Rob was going to CA, but wondered what he'd think of this annual mooning of amtrak not too far from SD:

He'd probably either want to participate, or condemn it for being full of uber white moonfaces with cankles.

OK, a word about the Markowitz operation at the CI concert. You think you've seen the full Marty (nh) at a prospect park concert or a press conference? Nuh unh. This was Marty's show -- he puts them on. So by 7pm, an hour before the show, he's up on stage with the mike while the sound crew is still setting up, and he's namechecking everyone in sight in a total gladhanding, non sequitor fashion. "Hey, there's my friend paulie, retired firefighter. New York's bravest are the best in the world. We love them. 200 Fifth Avenue -- a great BROOKLYN restaurant, in Park Slope, BROOKLYN. You gotta go try it. Hey, I see my friend Tony Crowell, dean of New York Law School and a resident of BROOKLYN. Notice how NEW YORK Law School turned to BROOKLYN when it needed a dean? We got the best people right here in BROOKLYN. Hey, Tony, give a wave to the crowd. Judge Bernie Graham, everybody. Oh wait, I mentioned him already. etc." This went on for an hour, nonstop. Oh, and though this was a free concert, there was a massive VIP section, half empty. He's got rows and rows in the front with seats for friends, friends and family of performers, and local, um, dignitaries etc. Guest list management was a big operation. We were grateful not to have to wait with the masses and their folding chairs to get in, but I really had to wonder if he's into doing the concerts for the politics or into the politics to facilitate the concerts.

Thank you, M4L. Yes, it's an old factory. I was able to completely customize it.

The pantry is only 32" deep but 10' wide. I keep all my small appliances in there to free up counter space, so I need to be able to pass comfortably, open microwave door, pull out drawers, what have you. I had those 5" deep shelves made for me by a guy on Etsy. He sent them already painted to the color and finish I requested. The 6 of them cost $350.00. They worked out perfectly. The 2 interior sides have storage as deep as 24". The pocket doors open to 42". Not having to allow for door swing clearance made the design possible.

I like Marty when he's in that 'mode', it feels genuine. Even if it's somewhat transparently political, he's a great booster and it seems like he really enjoys it.

Yeah, it's just funny, eva, and he was doing it long before he was BP. Just interesting to see it in all its glory. Same schtick when he was a State senator. And he lives to organize and preside over these concerts. He's been doing this at least 25 years if not more. The unfortunate accident that crippled Curtis Mayfield was at one of those concerts many years ago.

Wow, Slopey, that is Marty to the Max! Brooklyn's very own professional Shadkhan. A walking Chamber of Commerce.

Hah, LP, we forgot to check when the tennis center closed. So farmhand was happy for extra time to hang around with a friend, but there was no tennis after. Speaking of things Mrs. Slopey prolly won't like, I started streaming "Louie" last night. Not sure what to make of it -- not a big fan of cringe humor but I like the stand-up segments. He's a throwback to comedians who told stories with personal perspective and reflection, and didn't just rely on gags, insults, etc. Much more in line with Lenny Bruce, early richard Pryor, Robert Klein in his heyday than most current comedy, which is either Seinfeld banality ("did you ever notice"), absurdist or sort of unchecked hostility.

My guess is Portman -- present him as a choice of competence and knowledge about economy, trade etc. Barring something unforseen, Romney camp should be trying to talk economy -- and nothing else -- every day, and I think Portman is the choice that most doubles down on economy and leaves least room for distraction. Not a game changer but plays to middle without hurting on right flank and is the choice most on Romney's message. But very easy to be wrong about these things. Most likely game changer candidate, now that I think about it, is Rubio -- guaranty Florida (don't think he wins wiothout it) and shift some Latino votes. But stories were that he wasn't being vetted. I'm guessing they won't go this route.

WHAT, I ain't worried about getting ball to the 2 stars as they'll get their touches. it's whether the others will get enough touches to be involved in the game. plus I'm more concerned with Amare's health than worrying about him getting enough touches. Melo lost 12-15lbs so he on right trend. Felton was fat - unacceptable when you're playing so poorly and fighting with coach. WHAT, I like Kurt but I need to see what he has in gas tank before I get optmistic about him. I think Knicks will be better this year but just not enough to close on the other teams who had better arms-race off season - ie if they can't crack the top 4 team rankings, I don't see them getting out of 1st round (see them as 5th team)

Keeping Lin Should Make Financial Sense for the Knicks

July 16, 2012 3:12 PM - Slopefarm
Hey, rf.

According to apparent conventional wisdom at the moment, first tier seems to be Pawlenty and Portman, second tier is Thune, Jindal, Ryan, beyond that we get to Rubio, Ayotte, others. I commented above on why I thought Portman woul dbe the pick and best fit GOP strategy (and so far no one has called me didingenuous for doing so, but there's still time). But who knows.
July 16, 2012 3:14 PM - Slopefarm
I saw that, rf, but I think Silver's wrong about that. He should have factored in the cap penalties to Lin's annualized average cost. Puts him in top tier all star territory in terms of cost. No longer worth it.
July 16, 2012 3:16 PM - rf
Slopey, the lunatics (oops, I meant the Republicans) will tell you eventually about all these great VP candidates and what a dream ticket they have. All their VP prospects, either they are lunatics ripe for self-and ticket-destruction or boring semi-losers.

I am really looking forward to the debates! Everyone is looking at this day by day, but there are many days (too many!) until November. Many trees, few forests so far.
July 16, 2012 3:29 PM - Slopefarm
Well, rf, i'm not getting into partisan argument today -- jus trying to handicap the veep selection. Silver had a good comment the other day, saying the dynamics are comparable to 2004, with an incumbent with limited popularity and a big issue hanging over his head, but an unappealing challenger who can't get traction.
July 16, 2012 3:30 PM - Legion
Portman will help win Ohio which is crucial.

Rubio would be perfect but the political calculus probably has Florida leaning towards Romney anyway so it's a matter of tipping the scales slightly in his favor in Ohio.

Rice would be perfect as well, she would once again remove the common smear against Republicans as being the party of the "racist". It doesn't hurt that she's quite brilliant. Having survived the campaigns against her over the Bush years, she's also primed for the ideological battle
July 16, 2012 3:31 PM - DeadCatBounce
Romney has to step up his debating game big time or he will be crushed by Obama.
With unemployment at 8.2% and a weakening economy, Romney has important issues. Does he have the skills?
I am not sure.
July 16, 2012 3:34 PM - Legion
"All their VP prospects, either they are lunatics ripe for self-and ticket-destruction or boring semi-losers. "

Wow, that was pitiful rf. If that was bait, you'll have to try harder than calling former NSA Director/Secretary of State Rice a "loser" and Ohio Senator Portman a "lunatic".
No need for a reply there, as your words speak more to your party's deficiencies than to theirs.
Edited at July 16, 2012 3:34 PM
July 16, 2012 3:39 PM - Legion
"Does he have the skills?
I am not sure."

Sure he has the skills, he's no neophyte.
...and with the only thing to do is mention how badly the President has failed at reviving the American economy, it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
Polls show Obama and Romney in a statistical dead heat. With the independents out to lunch for the Summer, this should play nicely into the pendulum swing towards Romney sometime around mid September. As the debates start and the VP choice steps into the game, it's all about Obama's record.
July 16, 2012 3:40 PM - Slopefarm
Legion, base would throw a shitfit about Rice. Portman helps Romney with Ohio and with message about economy. Not sure why they are ignoring Rubio, which it seems. Florida is still close and Rubio would help in a few swing states with sizabel lationo population. As much as Pawlenty is mentioned, I don't see how Romney can pick the guy who said "Obamneycare" on the campaign trail. That's why I think it will be Portman.

DCB -- that's why I think Silver's analysis is apt that dynamic is 2004. Economy is Obama's Iraq war. Romney is GOP mirror image of Kerry as a candidate.

I like all the VP candidates mentioned well enough. Expect Romney will play safe.
Don't plan on watching the debates or much of the coverage. I have done fairly well avoiding it so far. Debates are more about tactics and soundbites than ideas.
July 16, 2012 3:44 PM - Legion
I don't know about Rice as an outsider with the Republican base,
her credentials are very impressive and she's no shrinking violet when it comes to defending her positions. It's just that the major media has done its best to hide her from the nation since she doesn't fit the usual female Republican media boilerplate of "psycho soccer mom with guns".
July 16, 2012 3:45 PM - Slopefarm
Yeah, etson, I can't really watch debates anymore. I just sit there for 90 minutes and whenever my candidate talks, I mutter "don't screw up, don't say something stupid, etc." I don't expefct to actually learn anything. Of course, neither my vote nor my state are in play in this election.
July 16, 2012 3:47 PM - Slopefarm
legion, she's got an abortion problem and a John Bolton problem in terms of GOP base voters. She'd be an excellent veep for any prez but i don't see her getting picked in this climate.

Legion, if Rice were at the top of the ticket, I would be looking much more favorably at the Republicans. But she won't get the nomination. Romney is really boxed in. Return of You Know Who: Calpers Generates 1% Return, Misses Discount Rate Target By 87%

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) today reported a 1 percent return on investments for the 12 months that ended June 30, 2012, falling short of its benchmark that returned 1.7 percent. CalPERS assets at the end of the fiscal year stood at more than $233 billion.

rf,
you are making the mistake that many make when it comes to the Right in America.
You are giving an unduly large influence to the "far right" wing of the party whose center, one presumes is located somewhere in the backwoods of Tennessee.
When the choice is made by those who are vetting the VP candidate, it will be made by Romney's team which is now the head of the Republican party. The others will fall in line.
It's not like they'll get up one day and say, "gee, that Rice is too liberal on abortion, so I'm gonna vote for the Dem candidate who will actually make me pay for them out of my taxes!"

...just like there's no way in hell, that the ACORN crowd is voting for Romney because he puts a hispanic like Rubio on ticket.

"your words speak more to your party's deficiencies than to theirs."

Legion, that's why political discussions dissolve into rancor around here. Rf was giving her personal opinion, she's not a spokesperson for the Democratic party. Why do you have to make blanket remarks like that? It serves only to turn up the gas under partisan fires, and it's too damn hot out today.

But while we're at it, anyone who votes Republican, or Democratic, for that matter, because of the race, gender, or nationality of those running is an idiot. Same if they vote against them for their race, gender or nationality. Why should anyone vote for Romney because he's got Condi standing next to him? Or Jindal, or Rubio? If that's their strategy, to show they are now the "big tent", it's cynical, and doomed to failure.

play out the clock until there is a real demand for full disclosure, then show your game. If something else happens to come up in between and distract the audience then so be it.
What do you think the President just did with his "executive privilege" assertion on the Fast and Furious scandal, he punted into the next quarter (after the election).

And btw, your Shrimp/Broccoli pasta dinner ain't too shabby either! I use frozen shrimp, too. It's just easier/handier, and seems to be A LOT less expensive than fresh and tastes good to me.

"spice your salads up a bit ... with stuff like olives, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers and just a little Feta cheese or blue cheese."

Absolutely, I have to do that or I'd rarely touch them! ; )

Agree.

"MM, You're too kind, thank you."

It's all a facade, cobble. She's really not.

Romney as Kerry fits the playbook pretty well. Both are extremely wealthy and perceived as a bit out of touch with the middle class.

It may not be all about the economy though,
Krauthammer has already discussed the mid-east uprisings as more of an "Islamist Surge" than the hopeful "Arab Spring" that this administration wanted to put out there as the fruit of their foreign policy.

A lot going on this summer in the Straits of Hormuz which could blow the whole theme of this election.

CGar! I didn't know you were such a master salad maker! Are you catering the big bash next week?
July 16, 2012 6:52 PM - CGar
DCB!!!!! KINDLY CHECK AND REPLY TO YOUR EMAIL!!!!!
July 16, 2012 6:55 PM - CGar
I am a good cook, rf. I just don't cook for only myself. I'm not catering the Bimbos' party, which you'd know if you read my emails. :-/

I am going to cook for the party I have if ever I close on my new apartment. I'm thinking of doing it around Rosh Hashanah (one of the surrounding weekends) to celebrate the Jew Year.
July 16, 2012 7:09 PM - rf
Rosh Hashonah comes out on Sunday night and Monday night this year! Good for NYC school students--4-day weekend! Mmm, latkes!

Not only do I read your emails but I answer them!

Then how do you not recall who's cooking??? And I only make latkes for Christmas and Hannukah.

Yes, I know, it starts Sunday the 16th, so I was thinking the 15th or 22nd perhaps. Unless I do a BBQ.

Oy, you can't spell Chanukah (or Hanukkah)?

Actually, I usually spell it with an "H" and get it right with 2 "n"s and 1 "k". But, I'm really a faux Jew since I'm an agnostic Jew.

Oh yes it is! It shows how fucking stupid the world is!

Can't till August, it's gonna be so much fun! The look on your faces is gonna be priceless..

Maybe if you hadn't moved to the suburbs to get away from me, you would've put a mint on my pillow like you used to. . . . At least chicken put mints on my pillow.

I put all kinds of interesting goodies in my salads, including feta, raisins, a few olives, sundried tomatoes, different veggies, etc, and I use dressings I really like in moderation. But I still can't get exited over them. I have a sneaky suspicion that people who dig into salads with great gusto are putting on an act, or have convinced themselves they actually would rather eat that instead of other more interesting food. And those people are always the skinny stick insect types, too.
July 16, 2012 7:34 PM - MontroseMorris
Penguin Boy, it's not all about you, you know. I was doing other stuff.

Bxgrl sends here regards to the OT. She's exhausted from setting up her apartment in Troy, and misses everyone.

Hmmm. Looks who's back.
July 16, 2012 7:37 PM - CGar
Nothing to do with it being all about me, Thelma, but don't think we didn't notice that you were posting over there hours before you deigned to show up here today.
July 16, 2012 7:39 PM - MontroseMorris
Yes. Going away to cook dinner now. Hope to return later.

And.....???

I had nothing to add here earlier. Some of us try not to talk when we have nothing substantive to say.

Much of the morning's talk was sports. I wouldn't know the Knicks players by sight if the whole team sat next to me, I don't care about basketball.

Cgar= PLUSA most likely to still be overly sensitive about harmless jokes made OVER TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO FFS.

Also PLUSA most likely to not respond to his e-mail while hassling others to reply to theirs.

Are you referring to me living in the 'burbs? If so, yes, I moved to get away from you, yeah, that's it! Say, you're Jew-ish, can't you hire someone to put a mint on your pillow? : P

Did I tell you that I walked by the same realtor again and that a couple of the listings in the window had been REDUCED? I was stunned.

Hey losers!. Dinner guests all gone. Dishes washed, tables cleaned. Left the glasses for the morning. Need something to do tomorrow.

Before the thread goes off into oblivion, CGar, please ID the POTD. I feel it is a photo that really could have been taken in almost any Brooklyn nabe.

Hey Lech! Nice of you to drop in. Hope you are well.

Until the morn.............night folks!
