Just for the record, Slopey, I have not changed my view.

The car is 12 years old. Haven't changed the bulb yet. I bet it's the bulb, Ark. The Pep boys will figure it out and I'll be in and out in 30 minutes for a fair price. Just have to get moving now. That's the only hard part. I'm wasting time looking at Swedish Tile Stoves on the interwebs. Trying to figure out how they get constructed. I bought the pieces of one on eBay a couple of years ago and would like to have it assembled now. Mine looks something like this:

M4L. It would not be a working stove. maybe I'll insert a gel fire box if I can figure it all out or adapt the stove with some carpentry and use only the ornate legs and top. Not sure yet. But it will look cool when done or it won't be installed. They surprisingly can fit into a number of settings well as made evident in this link: http://www.homedit.com/the-beauty-of-swedish-fireplaces/

This is a reference for the styling direction I am emulating.

Looks like you are watching yule log on a flat screen. I really think part of the attraction of a fireplace is the sense of an old time hearth. We have a nonworking fireplace, marble mantel with a black iron summer cover. We put an electric heater in front of it that looks like a wood burning stove and has a little paper and light effect to look like a fire, and people really respond to it as if it were real. Sometimes I even put a teapot on top of the heater to enhance the effect. By contrast, the real fire in that picture leaves me cold.

Hi kids, back (yesterday) from Troy. We moved Bxgrl's cats and some stuff up there, and she's there now. I got quite good at driving the U-haul van, but I still can't parallel park the sucker. Fortunately I only had to try it once, here in Brooklyn, failed miserably, and asked Amzi to do it. He was helping us pack the van, and he's a real sweetie.

You should have seen the cat ladies on the road, with kitties. (In carriers, of course.) The cats were totally freaked, and spent the first couple of days hiding in the back of a closet, or under the bathtub. Bxgrl said they were starting to explore and run around now.

It's stressful. And we got robbed.

Guy broke into the house while we were gone and took anything not nailed down, including the box of nails. Stole all of our hand and power tools, some boxes of laminate flooring, a new outdoor lamp, unopened cans of paint, brushes, etc, sanding blocks, paper towels, and a folding chair. He took my tool box, emptied it out, and left the box. Stole 2 drills, 2 sanders, extra sandpaper, brooms, dustpans, contractor bags (guess he had to carry it all in something), countless screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, etc, any and everything we had brought up to work on the house. He even took a broken shop vac that the previous owner had left.

He had to have made several leisurely trips, confident that no one would walk in on him. The police know who he is, as does our next door neighbor, he's a crack head who lives in another neighborhood who comes over to rob people, Bxgrl and her sister saw him at the property next door, and when she gave the responding police officer the description, they knew who he was. Unfortunately, since we didn't have any serial #'s, there's not much we can do. Apparently, according to the next door neighbor, this guy is the same one who robbed the house before, when the previous owner was renovating. Twice. Our house is the friggin' Home Depot for this clown. If they ever catch him, we're going for drawing and quartering.

But, it was only stuff, and I'm grateful it wasn't worse. He could have trashed the place, burned it down, or squatted. He didn't break anything, he just stole stuff. Someone is there now, and he's not likely to be back. We upped the locks, and installed the security system, too. The police say he's a sneak thief, not violent, and won't steal where people are around, and they'll get him. If this is the worst thing that happens to us, I can take it.

m4l -- sounds like you played "continuation" where you could call foul and keep the point if the shot went in. never an incentive not to call foul, so lots of bogus calls and you need some strong, er, moral suasion to limit the calls. We do not allow continuation in my games -- you can't make hair trigger foul calls because you end up giving away too many points.

etson, if you can imagine a mix of that suburban look with this more modern look, that would be what I wanted (with the bookshelve too). this one seems to have LED strip lights which looks good and better than me putting up a row of can lights above the fireplace.

slopey, we don't play continuation. if a foul is called, no basket even if it went in. plus one can't delay the foul call while looking to see if ball goes thru basket (ie calls foul only when shot misses) - call it or forget it. these hackers just like to foul alot and if it aint a very hard foul, they complain "yo, that aint no foul; where's the blood?"

I didn't see him, apparently he's some skinny-assed, short, wirey, white crackhead in his 50's. If Bx and I are ever walking down the street and she sees him, I'm going to have to hold her back. Actually, I'll hold him, and she can beat the stuffing out of him. Then we'll switch places. Start the bail fund now.

I wouldn't call it peace of mind, but really profound relief that he only stole. He had enough time to do much worse. Since he already took the copper pipes, when he stole them from the previous owner, the only thing left was the woodwork. Good thing there's plastic piping now, or he'd have taken it again.

MM -- on of our old time neighbors told me that, back when we were litigating about our house, the flipper's "contractor" tried to sell himall four marble mantels right out of the house. The contractor wasn't getting paid and was looking to make some $$ for himself. If he'd succeeded, we probably would not have been able to settle and close on the house.

I think PSU is headed towards big time victim compensation administrative scheme to minimize litigation. They have to own this now, and would not have hired Freeh if they were looking for wiggle room. Real question is whether heads will roll at trustee level. Quick read of reported highlights is not that any trustees knew but that trustees fostered culture of too much deference to administration and did not foster a climate fo reporting. Change the trustees to change the culture.

Sorry to hear about the theft MM,

I know all about theft from growing up in East New York. They tend to come around on a regular basis, like roaches. The one time you don't check the window or the lock on the basement is the one time they get in again. Some are brazen and others are very stealthy. Either way, they tend to move on if they see that it's a difficult score.

When I renovate apartments and leave a lot of high priced tools around I usually hook up a removable alarm system like the one pictured. It can be mounted on a wall with a ladder and a couple of screws to keep people from tampering with it easily. It detects motion and lets out a piercing alarm that actually hurts the ears of would be burglers. It's also pretty cheap and can cover an entire entry area. Get the one with the easy on/off key fob. Others have a code that you have to punch in but the remote alarm allows for mounting high on the wall to prevent someone from just knocking it down.
I've also used dummy video monitoring systems to mount on the doorways leading into the home, they have blinking red lights like the real ones and they only cost about 10 dollars a piece. Most thieves see that and just keep walking.

Oh MM!! No! I'm so sorry this happened! Effing crackheads! I hope they nab him and put a stop to that madness. I think worse than losing stuff is the sense of one's space being violated. It sounds like you've done all the right things though, and alarm system signs may be enough to scare him off?

The short people's house here was robbed very recently. It's a terrible feeling. They're getting over it, but did the same thing—got an alarm system, and are putting in a heavier front door with a couple new locks.

After I was broken into I had the Community Cop come tell me what security measures were most effective. He said solid locks on doors & windows (& roof or cellar doors), & both indoor & outdoor lighting that goes on automatically at dusk either by timers or sensor & stickers indicating an alarm system whether there is one or not. Also 'stops' on windows that prevent them from opening more than about 6 inches.

He check my summons and verifies that I am indeed under the 24 hour wire and therefore eligible to have the ticket dismissed. Paper work is completed and I'm done.

I complained to the officer that I had been stopped and ticketed twice for 2 separate bulb issues within the past 10 days. Both occurrences in almost the exact location. I made a joke about Bloomberg ordering them to raise money for the coffers. Suddenly the captain joins the conversation and (this is the good part) apologizes to me! He wanted to know the officers names so that he could talk to them. He tells me that they are NOT to issue summons for such offenses but only for those that could be dangerous like stop signs, red lights, failing to yield to pedestrians and the like. Wow. An apology from the captain!

I'm so sure that that is what YOU would have said. Yeah, right.

Are you worried about being alone tonight? You sure you are OK? Not neurotic are you?

Hi again. Big movers coming tomorrow for Bx's furniture and stuff. We only took up necessities and delicate things, plus the cats the other day. I'm going to be pooped by the end of the day. We'll still have more stuff to take up when she comes down for the party, and that will be it. It's very weird knowing she no longer lives upstairs. I guess the reality of leaving this house is finally sinking in.

As to your comment, Pete, what are you gonna do? Hauling tools and supplies back and forth was just too much. Besides, what's done is done. It's not going to happen again, God willing. We can only do what we can do.

mm, i know just have to take the chances. but worry anyways.my friend who is contractor had lot of his tools ripped off at a house he bought and was renovating for himself by one of his own subcontractors.

hudson valley...not really the catskills (altho close enuf) . lot of these people probably moved up years ago. but the accent is still fresh. There is one guy who is total caricature altho I've never heard him say he is from brooklyn....not the tuff guy image but the total Ed Norton(honeymooners) guy.

MM, I don't envy your day tomorrow. Even though the bulky guys will be doing the hard labor, it is stressful watching and coordinating a move.

I too recently went through a similar move and friend tenant thing. It is weird and quiet at first, but will quickly become the new norm. Change is so disruptive, but always proves to have it's benefits!

Saw a fun new musical tonight - "Flambe Dreams."
Super low budget, but had some good actors and hilarious songs.

Tomorrow night, I am seeing 'Arnie the Donut"

Now, time for bed.

Part', and European types- my ex-pat friends in France said they are buying affordable antiques at brocantes. They said young French people want *Ikea*now, so antiques are selling for much less than they used to.
