Hmmm, I have to say...this blueberry/cherry pie I made yesterday is pretty damn good! So that's my favorite today. ; )

Rose Levy Berenbaum's Shaker Lemon pie may be my favorite go-to pie. Easy, delicious, and unusual. Only pain is the crust and the fact that innards have to sit for 24h before you make it.

In all honesty, this is the part that has me particularly upset. Other than one OT fight over health care, I have always been very nice to benson and have always invited him to gatherings. Suggesting that people boycott the party hurts me personally a great deal.

Many people think that there's nothing more to organizing these parties than sending emails. They're wrong. A lot of work and thought goes into it. As many of you know, I've grown tired of planning the gatherings (not least because many people can't be asked to RSVP), and benson urging people to boycott is the proverbial frosting on the cake. I will never say never, but I will say that I plan to turn in my cruise director's uniform at the end of this month.

Big difference between freedom of speech and hate speech, legion. Why put up with someone who shits on half the population here DAILY? Makes rape jokes, makes fun of a man's marital problems and questions the actions of the same man's child in a very creepy way, and insults and demeans other people, especially Cobble, for no reason other than he's a narcissistic and screwed up spoiled brat? If any of that was aimed at you or yours, or Benson's, for that matter, you'd be over at his house beating the crap out of him.

What I don't get with you rob defenders is that it's ok for him to be the way he is, but it's not ok for us to not like it, complain about it, or in the end, allow the OWNER of the blog to do something about it? It's horrible that we banned poor rob, but the really awful stuff he says is allowable, and not nearly so bad? Why?

He was asked to stop, he said no. He was told he would be banned, he said he didn't care. He insists that he is above the codes of conduct that the rest of us daily operate under, and we're supposed to just accept that? Why?
July 2, 2012 10:11 AM - Not_Logged_In

that's really too bad he's gone that route, CGar. His beef is with scott, to a lesser extend snappy, to an even lesser extent cobble, and then those that voted for "standards" etc. But he's taking it out on you, MM, bx and everyone here who still wants to be here and to socialize together. Anger is totally misdirected. It's like losing a nasty barfight and then calling 311 to try to get the bar shut down on account of all the noise and riffraff.

MM,
the point is that we're applying standards here inconsistently.
Everyone can take offense at something.
That's why we were all surprised about the brownstoner incident, after all, who could be offended at butt jokes and ribald humor?
July 2, 2012 10:16 AM - MontroseMorris
Oh, where did Benson say people should boycott, I presume, the party that is being thrown for Bxgrl and myself? Because frankly, the people who we like, and like us, will be there, if they can be, and we're going to have fun. If you don't want to be there, and I use the general, "you", here, because of rob, then that's fine with us, too. We won't even notice.

"You"
"We're"

In the end (nh), it's scott's blog. He made a choice to ban rob after he got fed up as did others. He could have shut the blog down, the way Mr. B killed the OT entirely. Legion, if you wanted to take over from scott and host this instead and apply a set of standards (or not) consistently, I'm fairly sure scott would love to be rid of the burden. He's hosting largely to allow the community we formed to remain together but there are no set standards -- we're all here at scott's discretion.
July 2, 2012 10:21 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
There is a difference between disagreeing and calling someone a jackass and what rob was doing day in and day out.
July 2, 2012 10:21 AM - petebklyn
as scott said, if someone else wants to take ownership of the site - go for it. and then don't have to ban.
but since he is liable and responsible his choice.
Although I don't like lot of the irreverence rob has toward everything...I don't believe that is what got him banned.
It wasn't his attitudes and speech but his very vicious personal public attacks on people with whom he has some level of personal relationship off the OT.
July 2, 2012 10:22 AM - MontroseMorris
It's not inconsistant, legion, because NO ONE ELSE said the shit rob said.

And Brownstoner is a business, first and foremost, and Jon has the right to run it as he sees fit, in order to provide for his family, himself, and his employees. If he doesn't want "ribald humor" then that's the way it is. If he wants a "sanitized" website, well, since he's paying for it, why not? I disagree with how he got rid of the OT, but I do not fault him for doing what was best for his business. If he makes bad choices regarding content, or whatever, that's his business. No one here pays a single solitary dime to read it, so what does anyone care about how he runs it? A year later, and certain people still haven't gotten over it. Sad.

I can't believe that even benson is that petty. As for you people defending rob, how funny that all of a sudden you jump to his defense. he thinks all of us (you clowns included) are beneath him. Have no never read the crap he posts? And What- really- go fuck yourself. You wet up your own site yet you still come over here and bitch bitch bitch about everything. You must have the emotional and psychological capacity of a 5 year old. What a freaking hypocrite. You are over here everday begging for people to go to your site and everyday you manage to take swipes at me, MM, cobble and anyone you don't like (which is a fucking hell of a long list, btw.). Why don't you just stay on the beach instead of making it a cesspool over here.

And don't keep promoting rob- you can't stand him either. You're trying to control him on YOUR site because eh talks trash and spoils it for everyone else there too.

so if being glad scott decided to ban rob- for stuff rob said to scott btw- makes me a bitch. You can make that PROUD TO BE A BITCH, thank you very much. Ir's so much better than being a little prick. And something else for you, legion and benson- you don't run this site, you sure as fuck never paid for it. so STFU.

Dear Mr. Dimon, Is Your Bank Getting Corporate Welfare?
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-18/dear-mr-dimon-is-your-bank-getting-corporate-welfare-.html

To be precise, JPMorgan receives a government subsidy worth about $14 billion a year, according to research published by the International Monetary Fund and our own analysis of bank balance sheets. The money helps the bank pay big salaries and bonuses. More important, it distorts markets, fueling crises such as the recent subprime-lending disaster and the sovereign-debt debacle that is now threatening to destroy the euro and sink the global economy.

And this Asshole harps on Unions everyday, LMMFAO!

let's not make this a "is it right?" debate. life is about cause & effect. Rob is an adult who got told repeatedly his posts would get him banned. He made a decision that he didn't mind getting banned and kept posting. He got banned as he expected. He was not surprised, ambushed, etc. by the outcome and if he claimed otherwise, only an idiot would believe him. Cause & effect - his posts caused his ban and it was a conscious decision made by him. To debate right / wrong is really beside the point. if someone punishes me, I'll punch that person back and if someone goes to tell me that wasn't the right reaction then would explain cause & effect - ie that fucker shouldn't have punched me as my counterpunch was a very predictable effect of his cause.

Legion -- I don't think he's applying a set of standards at all. So I don't think he's applying standards inconsistently. I think when snappy complained about rob's rape joke, it was the last straw for scott. I think the argument for just ignoring rob and not banning him has some real merit and I did not vote in favor of imposing standards here, but I also think that this is a small community and that rob was really finding ways to bait some posters in a very personal and mean-spirited way almost daily and it threatened to fracture the community substantially. I think scott made a choice in favor of a move that he saw was more likely to sustain the community. But again, it is his call, and if we're all no longer worth the trouble he could just shut it down. I have mixed feelings about the choice, but I respect his prerogative to make it and I do not see it as a free speech issue. It's too bad, too, because I saw real signs of rob's growth during and after the South Carolina trip, but then he really regressed here. I would not have posted so often with sincere advice before and during rob's SC trip if I had a longstanding antipathy. I was really rooting for him then, but he really started pissing daily all over a lot of people who actually liked him.

- dude reacts verbally: "Yo, wtf was that for man? what's your problem?"
- dude shoves me back
- dude clocks me in the face
- dude whips out a weapon and uses it on me

net is the shove (cause) will likely get an effect (choices above). if none of the above effects are not to my liking, I shouldn't have shoved the dude for no reason and if I expected no negative reaction, then I'm the idiot. Rob's actions got him a reaction and the reaction was known beforehand so to debate right/wrong post the reaction is really moot. if peeps didn't want him to get banned, maybe they should've stepped up and intervene with Rob convincing him to stop those posts. to play monday night quarterback now is waste of time and too late.

Good morning, benson. You did not cut and paste the preface to my comment that you criticized: "And, I must cheekily (nh) add" which signals a ribbing as opposed to an "argument" though you and anyone are free to disagree. I would add that *rob* repeatedly asked to get banned. He wanted to get banned. That's apparently his thing. And he wears as his badge of honor that he's been banned on other sites (e.g., Survivor Sucks, Brownstoner). So, IMO, the more he was told he would be banned for his posts, the more he ramped up to get banned. I go with bottom right, unless the dominant red stripe totally overwhelms the wallpaper and rest of the room. If you want the drapes to quietly dress the windows, and not be a statement in of themselves, go with bottom left.
July 2, 2012 11:16 AM - CGar
m4l, I can live without a BlackBerry, per se, and get something else if need be. Even if they go Chapter 7, there are still tens of millions of users worldwide (still the choice for businesses), so I believe someone will buy it and support it.
July 2, 2012 11:17 AM - petebklyn
I go for whatever is cheapest, m4l.
July 2, 2012 11:17 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
But the darker colors of the wainscot and wallpaper will cause the bottom left to look really washed out, dontcha think? The drapery needs to hold their own against a backdrop like that.

::she says, with no design experience, especially in styles not modern:: :-)

dibs - I like the one in the middle of the bottom best (nh) (or right of the left if you don't count the screen select.)

July 2, 2012 11:21 AM - bxgrl
I agree with that, snappy. It might. We can't be asked to render a proper opinion without seeing the wall paper. Depending on the size of the flowers, the smaller stripes might be too small to hold up to the wallpaper.
July 2, 2012 11:22 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
Sorry, legion, no, I do not. I don't keep people in my life that give me the amount/volume of sh*t that rob gave me. I hit the eject button. Life is short, I don't need the free abuse, life is difficult enough. I don't put up with it in my personal life.

I'm sure it amused you and benson no end to see rob give me sh*t because you don't like me. But that's not fair. If it were your wife and child, endlessly being sh*t on, I have a feeling that your opinion would change very quickly.

It really bothered me because I essentially thought rob was ok, crazy but ok, and just kind of socially backward/unaware, possibly from his poor/feral upbringing, and his alcoholism. BH and I offered real help and he rejected it and then went on to ramp up the abuse and became rather sadistic. He went too far. I completely agree with M4L, life is about cause and effect, not some cut & dried notion of black/white/right/wrong. Rob needed to see that there are real consequences.

"I think the argument for just ignoring rob and not banning him has some real merit and I did not vote in favor of imposing standards here, but I also think that this is a small community and that rob was really finding ways to bait some posters in a very personal and mean-spirited way almost daily and it threatened to fracture the community substantially. I think scott made a choice in favor of a move that he saw was more likely to sustain the community."

slopefarm,
It makes sense on a personal level, but I just don't agree with the idea of banning when the OT was set up as a place for those who were banned from brownstoner to begin with.

bxgrl,

Regarding that house on Carroll Street, wow. That was a block from my old house. Mine was also an end house (by the time I bought it) with an alley between it and the next building. As I've said before (STFU, dave), a turning point in my decision to sell was the day I walked by and saw chunks of brick and concrete in the alley, which ultimately required tearing down and rebuiliding the wall, chimneys and parapet. So, it's scary that this exact same thing just as easily could've happened to my old house. Phew. I feel like a dodged a bullet.

Dave. for drapes, I would change my choice to top left. window treatment is mad expensive. contractor (also an authorized dealer of many brands of window treatment stuff) was showing me some fancy killer hunter douglas stuff which I was syaing that's nice, etc then my tune changed 180 when I realized them fancy stuff was like 1200 per window. have simple solar shades installed - still pricey but not ridiculous like $1200 per window

and legion, I don't agree that abuse should be put up with. Plenty of websites are moderated. This one isn't but people are expected to at least observe some modicum of manners. But it is pretty much a free for all in general. But rob went over the line over and over. So does what and when he does it to me, I edit his posts. I won't apologize for it. I never attack him on a personal level, and I don't deserve to be. I am also angry at the idea that MM, I or anyone else but rob is responsible for his banning. What keeps lying about that. I thought rob was out of line and I think scott did what he thought best- I agree with what he did. But scott's decision had nothing to so with me or Mm or Cobble. I really don't care if you believe it or not. I don't care if benson believes it or not- frankly I think he's acting like a dick and an immature ass.

Seriously, legion? You're glossing over the POINT, which is that normal human decency says to BACK OFF when someone is going through something really rough. It's called empathy. Something which a LOT of people here had for rob. A LOT. A good number of people here felt bad for him, his situation, life, experiences. They expressed sympathy/empathy and went out of their way to HELP him with REAL WORLD STUFF on numerous occasions and he, in a manner of speaking, spit in their faces rather sadistically. "...so what you're saying MM is that you feel bad for *rob*. ;o)"

I do think that is what she's saying. MM's post reminded me of some articles I've read about the psychology of foster children who've bounced around a lot. they start to expect that they will be booted out of every home, even by caring foster parents or potential adoptive parents. When they start to feel a real bond with their caregivers, it scares them and they start to act out, sort of on the premise of knowing that they know they will get bounced eventually and want to get it over with before they form too strong a bond with the new caregivers. They keep raising the ante with outrageous conduct if their caregivers do not get rid of them. It is a defense mechanism to minimize further hurt.

Rob got an awful lot of care and support from this community surrounding the SC trip and the San Diego trip. He did raise the ante on negativity after that. Not saying that is what's going on here but it does allow me to both feel sorry for rob while agreeing with m4l, CGar and others that he did do a lot to bring this on himself.

Moer to the point, slopey, I think she and many others of us were feeling manipulated, rather than sorry for rob. Rob ha a schtick- if you look at the entire history of his postings, it's pretty much all the same thing. And we responded, as always in helpful, caring ways. And as always we got slapped down. Now I don't know what else was going on with him lately, but he has gotten nastier and even more abusive. And I'm not the one who caught the brunt of it- others, like cobble did. Finally I realized rob didn't want help or friendship, rob likes to play puppeteer. In fact I believe he said as much at some point in the past. So I'm done with feeling sorry for him, or offering him help. He's a big boy.

Arkady -- my "Call Me Maybe" earworm of last week was knocked out by the farmhand's unfortunate discovery of a certain late 60s novelty hit sung with ukelele accompaniment in falsetto voice with wobbly vibrato concerning one's gait among flora. And that is as far as I will go toward identifying the noxious earworm lest I be accused of spreading this contagion. [If you know the infernal song, say you know it without guessing it.] Farmhand is inexplicably reveling in it, however.

A few comments, posted on my lunch break.

- From day 1, I have said I would welcome alternate governance or ownership of this site. To date that has not happened.

- In my mind, this site was set up a replacement for the cancelled OT and for people who were not able or did not feel comfortable posting on brownstoner, not specificaly as a place for people who got banned from Brownstoner. The What was banned several different ways in the first month, and there was no real outcry from anyone.

- I have said on several occasions that I don't want to become a moderator for this site, and I remain committed to limiting moderation to content/users that impact the continuance of the site.

- I feel that rob's behavior was greatly impacting the health of the site. Active membership had been declining for a month, primarily due to rob's posts.

- I will not pretend that the final decision to ban rob was based solely on my concerns over the health of the site. It was based on a purely personal feeling that I did not want to be associated with a site where behavior like Rob's was permitted. In order for me to be honest with my feelings and convictions, the only choices I had were to ban Rob or shut the site down. I had already offered to transfer ownership with no success.
As I have said before, the decision was arbitary, and went against the majority in the poll.

- On the topic of why The What has not been banned again: When he returned, it was during a period where I was not active in the site, focusing on family issues. Since he has returned, I have not considered his actions to be anything that would either casue permanent harm to the site or make it a place where I would not want to be associated with anymore. If I feel he crosses that line, I will ban him again.

Now back to work.

The television journalist Anderson Cooper, the biggest star on CNN, on Monday publicly identified himself as gay. He was concerned, he said, that his long-held silence on the matter had led some to believe that he was uncomfortable or ashamed of his sexuality.

Mr. Cooper came out in an e-mail message to Andrew Sullivan, the openly gay blogger for The Daily Beast, which was republished in full with his permission. The e-mail affirmed what had been an open secret in Manhattan and media circles for years, but had never been addressed publicly by Mr. Cooper.

“Even though my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life,” Mr. Cooper wrote. In part, he wrote, that has been for professional reasons: “I have found that sometimes the less an interview subject knows about me, the better I can safely and effectively do my job as a journalist.”

He continued, “Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle. It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.”

I don't buy the notion that Roberts can be pushed around by the media. It's not that uncommon for S.Ct. justices to change their minds once the drafts start circulating. I've been critical of Roberts in the past not for voting on the politically conservative side but for leading the court in a judicially immodest direction -- reaching out to make far-reaching rulings beyond the questions actually presented and that need to be decided. Citizens United is a prime example. I saw the ACA decision and thought "finally, a Roberts decision consistent with his confirmation hearing testimony" -- judicial modiesty, calling balls and strikes, etc. I think the putative majority decision that became the dissent must have gotten him thinking about the role of the court.

Legion, Roberts did open a Hornets Nest by opening up the definition of "tax" substantially.
This will be a problem for Democrats and Republicans going forward as politicians on both sides of the aisle will use their expanded power to game the system and get their way.
I suspect ACA will drive up costs, lower quality of care, and create health care rationing to the point where the American People get fed up once and for all. It will take a few years, though.

"No one will ever accuse him of having it in for Obama again."

I would never put it in those crudely political terms because I don't think Roberts thinks that way. I think he's looking to remake constitutional law in a direction that dovetails with many aspects of a conservative legal and political agenda. I see this decision as a chess move -- he's sacrificed a knight for board poisition in furtherance of a long game protection of his king. He's bought the court a lot of leeway to move aggressively in less political cases, and put down a commerce clause marker that he will look to pick up and use in a future case.

I agree DCB,

It's got to drive costs up if one only takes a look at the larger picture.
1. When did large scale entitlements ever reduce costs?
2. It's a demand side solution where a supply side model is necessary to cut costs.
3. No one has yet to address the looming 30% " doctor fix" pay cut necessary to reduce long term costs, nor have they addressed how the existing medical pool is going to see another 30 million individuals without significant increases in the number of doctors.

"I would never put it in those crudely political terms because I don't think Roberts thinks that way."

LOL
He's a man no?
He thinks that way.
We all have motivations, some have higher aspirations, true, but as you 've stated even Roberts is open about his understanding of his role in the historical precedents being made here.
He traded one political calculation for another.
His court will be seen less political in terms of slant but more biased in terms of it's ability to be swayed by outside influence.
In this case, his own awareness of the historical significance of his decisions.

Yes, legion. I think that is a key distinction -- being swayed by the media vs. being aware of the historical significance of the Court's decisions. I believe the chief justice should be mindful of the latter and impervious to the former.

How do you pay doctors less and yet get more doctors? Obviously that isn't going to work.
How do you increase the demand for medical services and yet make healthcare more affordable? Obviously that isn't going to work.
This is going to become a very corrupt, very dysfunctional system over the next few years. All because of a mystical belief in the "free lunch" theory of economics. The one that says you can get whatever you want as long as "they" pay.

dcb -- it's a flawed law but I don't buy the free lunch complaint. Right now, tens of millions have a free lunch. They get into cars every day, play sports, breathe air near people with infectious diseases and engage in all sorts of known and unwitting behavior that raetes health risks, but self insure and implicitly expect to be cared for at hospitals if something should ever go dreadfully wrong, whether or not they can afford the bills directly. The individual mandate was proposed by the Heritage Foundation back when conservatives focused more heavily on a philosophy of personal responsibility -- i.e., people needed to take responsibility for their health risk -- in philosophical contrast to the pre-reform welfare system. The conservative posture is now more aligned with an individual liberty viewpoint, hence the opposition to what earlier conservatives proposed.

The free lunch complaint is not a legal or political one. It is based on principles of economics that involve cause and effect.
Time will tell if I am understanding the natural laws of economic consequences correctly.
If a few years from now, everybody is healthy, the system is working brilliantly, and healthcare is plentiful and cheap then that is great. I will be the first to congratulate and thank the supporters of the ACA.

My "free lunch" point wasn't political or legal, it was factual. There's a cost to having tens of millions getting a "free lunch" through the risk that they will need serious medical services with no insurance and no ability to pay for it. The insured among us are all paying higher bills and premiums (directly or through employers, medicare/medicaid etc.) as a result.

I agree with the points Legion made the other day about what needs to be fixed in health care delivery and there are more issues as well. But statements like DCB's: "I suspect ACA will drive up costs, lower quality of care, and create health care rationing to the point where the American People get fed up once and for all." illustrate how out of touch people opposed to Obamacare are. I have insurance and have rationing of what services I can get and who I can get them from. I definitely can't see the doctors I would like to. Only the rich and those with better plans, probably through employers, get better health care. Also, it's astounding to me that those opposed to ACA don't seem to understand what insurance is. With our health, home, car, crop, etc. insurance, we hope we will not need it, and as long as we're not using services that add up to the costs of our premiums, deductibles, and copays, we're paying for others to get those services!
July 2, 2012 3:25 PM - Legion
If I'm not mistaken,
the "conservative" individual mandate was proposed as a remedy to the multitude of individuals who could afford to buy the insurance, but were not actually buying it, thereby causing a huge rise in costs to municipalities in covering that care. It was proposed as a specific solution to a particular problem.
It was not tied to a larger reform of the entire healthcare industry as we have now and which adds the following components just to name a few:
-the set up costly healthcare exchanges for each state.
-the huge expansion of Medicaid rolls across the nation.
-the huge (500Billion) dollar cuts to Medicare to be instituted in order to fund it.
-severe taxes on tanning salons.

Attempting to give the individual mandate more credence because it was originally a conservative idea is not an argument that takes into account the law being discussed today.

EXACTLY. It is. Until it is demonstrated that some healthcare coverage is available at a cheaper price (doubtful) all this really is is JUST A TAX ON POOR PEOPLE, who will wind up paying the tax because the healthcare is still $1,500 -2,000 a month and unaffordable. It was Obama who imposed this tax on the poor.

and there wouldn't be a need to have as many new doctors as Legion says since so many are now doing unnecessary diagnostics and procedures (do ya'll know about the studies, I think in Mass., that showed how many more procedures are done in a locale when there are more of those types of doctors, and no indication that the populace actually needs those procedures?). they could be freed up to do necessary work. also, lots of doctor visits could be handled by physicians assistants or nurses. I don't think I've ever seen anything I like on HGTV shows. Even the staging at the end of This Old House is oftentimes tacky and those are some great homes.

Occasionally there's something good on Yard Crashers but once they start with the fire pits and the blue glass stones, it all goes to hell.

I love that house that P Allen Smith built though...really tastefull reproduction. He's gay too

July 2, 2012 6:16 PM - bxgrl
4eva- I was working in midtown but in the subway under the towers when the second plane hit. We were there for awhile but as I understand it, it was one of the last trains to get out from under them. we were probably the last train that pulled into that station because it was shut down immediately after the second plane. After that I volunteered and was down there almost full time as a site supervisor from Oct until the day it closed. Vollies didn't get masks and such- I know a lot of people who are very sick, and several friends who have already died fro WTC related illnesses.
July 2, 2012 6:18 PM - bxgrl
I love my doctor at Mt. Sinai- I really hate to lose her and I am going to try to keep coming down for her appts. ut if I get sick again upstate and wind up in the hospital, Mt. Sinai wouldn't cover the er visit because it was out of NYC. I don't know if I can be part of both NYC and the national program. I have to find out.

I like "Rehab Addict" on DIY. Nicole Curtis lives in Minneapolis, and buys and rehabs only old houses. She's great with figuring out how to reuse materials, and she has good taste in making old houses new. Plus she does much of it herself, which is cool. I love her show. She restores, whenever possible, not just renovates.

I like Mike Holmes too, I learn a lot from his show, although I'd be scared to death if he came in any house I'd live in. He'd probably want to tear it up and redo the whole thing.

Who was that, arkady? He must be on the Wall in Coney Island.

4eva- I was with George's mom the night they found George's body. They didn't tell her until next morning. It was New Year's eve. She came down as a volunteer in the tent. Email me sometime - it's an eerie story.

Mickey is actually one of the firefighters who actually survived in the collapse. He's become very well known for his story. A hair raising tale and he retired several years ago.

I think the 23rd st. fire is still commemorated every year, isn't it? Horrible horrible fire.
July 2, 2012 6:47 PM - Slope4Eva
The 23rd Street memorial now includes all of the 9/11 firefighters as well, but yes, every year. So many tragic stories, so sad.

I was out of touch on 9/11 (no cell service), but my mother had called my sister's house and when the BIL answered my mother said, "oh, I'm so glad you're home". Shehad woken him up, told him what was going on, and, he thanked her and said, "I have to go in". She was beside herself until they heard from him later on.

To meet someone at the gate of an airport go to the airline ticket counter, explain the situation, and ask for a "Gate Pass."
A Gate Pass works just like a boarding pass for the purposes of getting you through security.
It is totally at the airline's discretion if they will give you a gate pass, although the decision can be influenced by the TSA security level (and line length) that day.
July 2, 2012 7:30 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Thanks, BHS, I think my friend already has the pass somehow. Have you done it? Did it go pretty smoothly?
July 2, 2012 7:33 PM - BoerumHillScott
Yes, I did it when I dropped my son off, and my mom did it when she picked him up.
I have not done it other than that, but I have read that it is pretty common.

The biggest pain (above and beyond airport hassles) is waiting in the full service line at the ticket counter.

Have a great time Cobble and BH!!!!!!

Trying, but too hard to can't catch up. Too much to read.

Cobble, Eva -- I was the first female bartender in Brooklyn at the Saloon in the early 80's. Worked with Barry and Josh. They had me on the day bar and occasional nights. Worked the Brooklyn Bridge Centennial night in 1983. I bet one of you were there.

I want to retire to Bermuda. Very sleepy now. Back from a bad condo board meeting. We are getting sick of it and each other.
