When one enters an L train station and sees the wait times on the screen as 15 minutes and "delay" it is best to turn around and go back home.

Flowers?? For me?

Will prolly be away from computer all day today and not posting, but:

1. I wanted to add my welcome to Partridge (and yes, as a kid, I had a crush on Laurie Partridge during the show's original run. Marcia Brady, not so much.)

2. More on my MIL's Dick Clark connection. Both were communication majors at Syuracuse, so she knew him, but she was a few classes ahead. Both had radio shows on college station. She always thought he was kind of a ridiculous pretty boy and would roll her eyes if his name came up in conversation.

20 minute reprieve so I can chat for a sec. Yes, arkady, planted seeds on Sunday. Put some hostas in the back. Front garden is quite green and lush already -- boxwoods suddently got big and shaggy. Butterfly bush, too, but rhododendrun barely flowred at all and seems done already for the year. Did you see op ed comparing flowering this year to Thporeau's notes from a century and a half back? Blueberries flowered six weeks ahead this year.

Bandstand was must-see t.v. when I was in 8th grade at prep school in 1955. We'd race back to the dorm from hockey practice every day. School was near Phila. & we kept trying to figure out how to get on the show. Never did.

good morning. ONE quick post...

Half the AM new york paper today was going on and on about how the rental market is so in demand that basically everyone is screwed. Then there's an ad for a new building with 104 units in bed stuy... um look at how ridiculous these incomes / rents are skewed.

NHOP Unites
30 units 1 Bedroom 1-2 people rent: 1,887 income 66,686 - 106,240

Affordable unites
16 units 1 Bedroom 1-2 people rent: 377 income 14,915 - 19,450

whaaaaa? wtf happens to people who make between 20K and 70K?! why are they always shut out of MOST of these stupid affordable housing programs?! It's a tad frustrating. It makes one think they should quit their job and work at Duane reade! These mixed income developes are such a scam and totally keeps out the truly most economically vulnerable in this city.

well ONE building out of the 30 or so buildings on the NYC gov that i barely qualify for? which only has like 3 apartments available, and 50% of those three apartments go to people who living in that specific community board already (shady) and 5% go to people with disabilities (that's cool i guess, but still..) chances for these apartments are SO slim for people who aren't dirt poor. The worst thing is that there are moonfaces who are interns and sell crafts on etsy making like 15K a year, getting into these apartments. totally not fair considering a fair share of them have parental allowances (which don't get taken into consideration in any of these housing lotteries... (yes ive read many accounts of this on citydata.) ah well, not going to let it frustrate me. not sure i want to live in a building where it's half moonfaces half UBER low income anyway.

haha,
I'm always here to comment on global warming!

One very important clarification: the idea that people are denying global warming outright is often wrong.

What many in the scientific community are saying is that the mild increase in global temperature over the past century is not necessarily due to human generated carbon emissions but part of the Earth's natural cycle of heating and cooling.

As I've said before, the Sun and the Earth's position as our solar system rotates around the galactic center is the primary determinant of larger temperature shifts on this planet.

Yeah, I loved the music, clothes and watching the dancing! I remember being about 10 or 11, watching, and being blown away!

I think that was about the same time my parents gave me a little transistor radio. I used to lay in bed at night listening to music or weird/interesting late night talk shows.

Hello M4L. Pleased to meet you as well.

I have strong opinions on this exact topic and have just had to make the same choice. I would advise against the charcoal or black grout. Reason being the high contrast level between the tile and the grout necessitates a perfect installation. The slightest spacing difference stands out like a sore thumb. It also gets tricky when applying the silicone or caulking in the edges. You will then have to use the clear silicone because a matching charcoal caulk line will be too wide and unsightly.

I selected to use platinum grout color and I'm very happy with it. It is easy on the eye, much more forgiving to install, still hides dirt and will stay fresh looking longer.

I like Elizabeth Warren. If she was running here, I'd vote for her in a hot minute. (ducks bricks and moral outrage from the Repub boys)

So if there's no global warming, how come the "natural cycle" just happened to start turning in overdrive in the last 75 or so years, corresponding with mankind's unprecidented rise in pollution and energy levels? Coincidence? I don't think so. It's amazing that most of the opposition to the idea of GW comes from the political right. Just because Al Gore championed the cause, he can't be right? The evidence seems pretty clear. The tornado and hurricane action alone should be a big HELLO....GLOBAL WARMING HERE!!!!!!!!!

"but kind of get paranoid when I saw I had to link directly to my hard drive and link the pic. "

Once it's posted, no one can see where it came from/hard drive. Just the file name. So you can change the file name before you upload it. Try it and see, you can always remove it after, if you like.

Also, re: paranoia. We all get a little paranoid, it's understandable. But please know this: We are ALL VERY protective of each other's personal information.

Some of us know each other's real names, work places, and have been to each other's homes. But a lot of us did not share this info readily and still don't share it with everyone. No information about you, if you choose to share it with anyone here, will be shared with anyone else without your express direct approval.

We value EVERYONE'S privacy. No matter how much we bicker and fight, privacy is protected.

Mets and Jets? Added to the shabby Knicks (till now) that could affect your mood. I am a YAnkee fan from ..... Uh.... Let's just say I worried about Mickey Mantle's knees......and a Knicks fan from the 80s till when Pat Riley left. And now getting interested again.....and I am a Giants fan but not really a big football fan.

BTW I was just near the old Limelight. It is a CLOTHES STORE!!! I remember dancing there. But the old days with the black lights and the drugs felt weird in a church.

re: global warming

In layman's terms, the Earth has undergone natural heating and cooling cycles throughout its history.
This is well documented science. The only thing constant is change with regards to the Earth's climate.
Oxygen levels, Carbon Dioxide levels, Ozone, Heating, Cooling have all been in constant flux for millions of years before man was on the scene.
Humans have been around for a blink of an eye and we've only seriously recorded temperatures for about 100 years.

So scientists making claims that a temperature shift of 1 degree over the course of a few decades has everything to do with manmade carbon dioxide, without regard for all the other variables, are suspect.

Hurricanes are a true indicator, but are they really worse than previous years?
Climatologists measure this as Total Global Hurricane Strength. I haven't read that this has increased.

We had a mild winter here in the North East this past year, meanwhile in the North West they got
clobbered with more snow than ever before.

Hi Partridge,
I don't say it's completely wrong and there is evidence of warming,
I'm just saying that politics has undoubtedly crept into the science of global warming and is
causing many scientists to lose their objectivity.

Are they getting the source of the change right and
are the remedies they propose likely to do anything about it?

One prominent international scientist recently renounced his membership in a certain organization (the IPCC I believe) because he felt this to be the case. He is a nobel prize winning scientist.

Al Gore is just guilty of catagorically denying the possibility that he could be wrong about his proclamations and
leaving no room for an open debate on the subject.

...even if he did invent the internet, that's no reason for him to browbeat the opposition. ;o)

Scott,

Think of yourself as Robinson Crusoe, and your current employer as the ship. What can you take, use? I am not recommending purloining computer equipment, but just think that you are going to take what you can from that sinking ship, whether it be contacts -- saying goodbye to the people you like, collecting contact info -- information.... stuff that isn't going to get you in trouble but which has personal meaning..... stuff -- don't leave anything personal there. I purloined some stuff which nobody there would ever use -- i.e. a global directory of biofuel producers. It would have been thrown out - it just gave me pleasure to rip it off. It won't get me in jail. I read it every night (not really).

We didn't have a tv when I was very young - I remember going shopping for it with my family. We never had those dance shows where I lived. There were 2 tv stations. One summer we took a trip and stopped by relatives in Arizona and they had several tv stations - I was blown away by that!

Legion, the problem is that liberals think in this instance science is objective and irrefutable. Any real scientist will tell you the very nature of science is refutability, and I think it's clear those who claim to believe in the science of global warming didn't reach their views through any kind of objective process. Sort of like the supreme court claiming to decide cases on the law.

Supreme court decision making process:

1. Identify political issue
2. Decide case
3. Backfill decision with legal reasoning to make it look like precedent determined the outcome.

Park slope liberal decision making process:

1. Identify global warming as what is really an economic issue
2. Identify position as anti-growth, pro-conservation elitist
3. Realize this synchs up nicely with believing that it is imperative to reduce carbon emissions ASAP
4. See al gore movie
5. Lie to everyone by saying your position is based on "science"

Thank you for the welcome wagon and all included goodies!!!

I have no problem with anyone on this board (actually I told Rob y'all were way too nice, I feel out of place).

I do have one concern and that is with the drinking the Rob koolaid/mommy comments. As much as that kind of stuff bugs me (as it's intended to , lol) I know it bugs Rob, and because this was his playground for many years, I don't want him to feel like 'oh great, here's Gazoo, now everyone can bag on me about my cult following/mommy'. I have a thick skin, but I'd rather not drive Rob off...how else will I get the inside scoop on the Moonface Invasion?

Welcome Partridge!

As for the grouting with subway tiles, I say go with the platinum. I've used platinum with white tiles in the bathroom, and it's perfect. White grout is actually too white next to white tiles, the platinum adds the look of a shadow, which defines the tile nicely, without overpowering it. I'm not a huge tile fan (ugh, when I first got married, we had a 70's house with goldenrod tiles and 1/2" black grout...I still have flashbacks!), but I do love subway tiles, and the closer you get to the actual color, but just a tad darker, the classier they look. Dark grout is a huge design statement in and of itself, so think of the total impact.

Too busy at work to post today, but . . .

Gazoo, please don't give that a second thought.

A. Rule #1 is (quite seriously) to ignore all of the masturbatory mumbo jumbo spewed by jackal / lechacal / lech, who is the number one proponent of the *rob* Mommy theory. He's just a repressed pussy-whipped suburban soccer dad so he has zero standing on this or any subject other than strippers.

B. On the alleged "Mommy" front, you're in great company with, among others, cobble, bxgrl, MM, donatella and Slopey, at least 3 of whom also do 180s and are *rob*'s arch-nemeses as well.

Third, in terms of cult following, I am one of the Co-Presidents of *rob*'s Fan Club (Arkady being the other), so-named by several of the crazed cat women who vacillate between mothering *rob* and chasing after him with pitchforks, torches, tar and feathers.

All that said, we, including *rob*, are long-used to the nonsensical allegations, so please just ignore them, as we do and as *rob* usually does.

I will say it again: there is no scientific principle at stake wrt the global warming Issue. As Legion said, no one is disputing the rise of 1 degree over the last 100 years. The only issue is the cause. To determine the cause, scientists are using highly complex modelling, using the latest supercomputers. Anyone who has done any modelling of any sort knows that the results depend significantly upon your boundary conditions and assumptions. Anyone, no matter what his pedigree, who states that the matter is "settled" is ignoring the modelling process, either out of ignorance, or in the case of some scientists, to covince a government bureaucrat that they really do need the grant to fund a supercomputer and staff to prove this point.

I liked the story. It reminded me of my dad, especially the car. My dad had a policy of never paying more than $100 for a car, and we had many cars when I was a kid. He also left the keys in the visor. Once (only once!) someone stole it from in front of the house in Hicksville (too much trouble to put it in the driveway) and it ran out of gas right around the corner.

Also, the detail about the cloth covering the ceiling of the car drooping--many memories of that, and the cloth is falling down a bit in the van that I currently drive.

input needed.. organizing a potluck lunch at work. we normally do themes, and I think it's took late to do a spring theme, we've done that to death every spring, tho we haven't had one so i guess it's a possibility if I can't think of anything better or more fun. Sometimes we do certain ethnic-themed potlucks, but usually revolved around a certain holiday (and usually the typical ones that are easy to do like cinco de mayo, bastialle day...) Any suggestions for a theme? Thinking about either late next week or early to mid the following week. another problem is that invariably someone will always fart on or poopoo the day picked because they are not there or they have something they have to do the night before and can't be asked to make a dish. So picking the day is always really difficult. Personally I like wednesdays. Mostly because most people i work with are there on wednesdays and it's a good way to break up the work week. And if someone has something to do on a tuesday night they can always bring in a last minute cake or pie or something (as tons of people do). okay.. the last time i organized the potluck i almost wrote at the end of the email: if youre not going to make a dish or stick to the theme, you are still invited, but please, ENOUGH with the going out 10 minutes before the potluck while everyone is setting up and bringing in a box of cookies from duane reade or a pie from other places.. i didnt say it cuz that would have been bitchy, but with every potluck i swear the homemade dish to some random store bought dessert is about 1::1 ratio! it's like people think, eh, not going to bother, but then they see all the great dishes people made and are like oh fuck i'm going to participate last minute. some people do that last minute and will go out to nice stores in soho and buy something complimentary to other peoples' dishes or just buy something absurdly flatout expensive (no problems there!) but i get all pissy (not really) when someone plops out the second or third box of cookies that after a real potluck no one is in the mood to eat. maybe i suck at organizing potlucks. maybe i set an awful precedent once when i went around to people who werent participating and told them they should come and eat because there is MORE than enough and to just "bring anything".

anyway, just trying to think of a good themed potluck. work has been kinda stressful for a lot of people (me included lately) and these always seem to be great and tons of fun. the last time we had one was in the winter and i dont want to organize them TOO often, i think 3-4 times a year is perfect. a few people (mostly new people who have only experienced one) have been asking when the next one is, so i want to do one, but i want to not have it be a dull theme.

the best potluck i ever organized was the "country cookin'" one where everyone had to pick out a recipe and make it from this white trash cookbook from some country singer (im totally blanking on her name...) one recipe was like squirrel soup or something (no one made that) but it was a good one and probably the most fun one because of the theme..

i would TOTALLY organize a Moonface potluck, but i'd have a hard time explaining what i mean by it... i mean everyone WOULD know, duh. actually... if i can find a way to rephrase moonface and what i mean by it in the description for the potluck it could totally be hysterical (fyi, it's totally fine cuz i dont work with any moonfaces!) maybe a potluck where you have to come up with the most artisinal dish you can think of? does that even make sense? i'd also be screwed with what i make. my dishes are usually... a tad off the cuff at potlucks anyway, but always eaten!

Benson, so sorry to hear about your friend's wife (I'm assuming your friend as well). I know that has to be a devastating call for you to make. Very sad.

Rob, how about a picnic theme? Meats/cheese platters to make sammiches, fried chicken, fruit salads, green salad, potato salads, cupcakes, pies, cookies, lemonade, iced tea. All stuff that can be made at home pretty easily and quickly.

I'm surprised you'd encourage people to bring foods from home....who knows the poomist levels in people's kitchens (how close is it to the bathroom) and if they even washed their hands, or if they have one of those grody Hoarders kitchens with roaches and bedbugs scurrying about.

If you're in the mood for moonface, tell them to make anything they'll find at the Whole Foods deli...or call it Urban Hipster Delite.

Rob, if I may introduce myself (hello, I'm Partridge) and tell you that it is a pleasure to meet you. I love the picnic idea of Gazoo's. I was also thinking maybe an "Coney Island" theme could be fun. Hot dogs, sauerkraut, onions, corn on the cob, french fries, taffy, cotton candy. Orange and grape soda too! Nothing says white trash more than orange and grape sodas.

I like the idea of a picnic too. You could make it, "What you'd have at a baseball game if there were tailgates for them." But if it's going to be in 2 weeks, that's also almost Cinco de Maio.
To get people to not bring store-bought crap, remind them in the invitation how rotten they felt last time when they saw all the neat stuff others had brought so they should get their acts together this time.

Turns out it was a bit of a more complicated recovery (and injury was more serious than I originally thought) but the wrist is pretty much healed now and the challenge is getting full mobility and flexibility back to my fingers. But it keeps getting better. Now we are measuring progress by millimeters. It has improved dramatically over the last couple of weeks. Thanks for asking.

Oh, OK, I'm a hop, skip and a jump from GK. The beach must have been nice, although I wasn't here back then.

Yeah, Slopey, that would be a little scary.

S4E, I hope you like it there. There is a lot to be said for Staten Island. I was surprised how good it felt to be in New Dorp then. I decided on Brooklyn, but there was one cute little house that tempted me out there - in New Dorp actually.

Yes, Eva, the person I'm thinking of is wonton. We didn't all know each other as well back then, and some of us were still meeting each other for the first time. The 'assumption' was young Asian Guy. The reality is white chick, more or less my age! We were all shocked, but no one more than DIBS!! It was highly amusing!

She's a hoot, I love her. I'm guessing she's in Asia now. She'll pop up at some point again, I hope.

I couldn't buy here now. I bought in 2004. And I was really upset to see how prices had risen. I had been living in Kansas City and the NYC price spike was shocking. You can buy any Italian food item you could dream of on the South Shore of Staten Island. I took an Italian friend from Manhattan to New Dorp and she was amazed at the variety of cheeses in an ordinary supermarket. Bakeries everywhere.

Dona, I wish. Those are the women my age. The underage drinking and drug use out here is absolutely horrifying. I think I have the only 18 year old that still gets grounded. So many kids she knows have already done rehab, dropped out of school, etc. She was dipping her big toe in those waters and I got all up her face constantly. She's actually really seeing some of her "friends" for what they are and where they are headed and she's pulling herself away. Thank goodness. She hung around with them, but kept her head on straight (for the most part, I can deal with drinking once in a while). Sorry to babble on and on.

Eva, I have seen it. I know what you are talking about. Staten Island is also supposedly pill heaven, the borough in NYC with the highest incidents of prescription pill abuse. Lobster Tails are a crispy pastry in the shape of a Lobster Tail, filled with cream on the inside. Some make it with Cannoli-type cream on the inside (Like Court pastry). Rimini's makes them with a "French Cream" on the inside, and that is a grand slam.
