I miss that pretty CVS. But I think I like Duane Reade better - I like the bonus card better for sure - CVS makes u keep coupons for future visits and Duane Reade lets u just redeem any credits.

JB, got current pad eons ago so mortgage was small - ie could save up all this time (for down on new pad etc). I could only afford massive fixers so have no choice but to buy first as lots of renov (then sell current pad later). but down and renov at new pad drained my savings so need to sell current pad to restore savings. will try FSBO route first. I suspect I need to renovate it a little to ensure it sells faster - ie current sponsor-grade reno is not helping.

Morgan Stanley Executive Charged in Hate Crime Stabbing (1)

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Morgan Stanley’s William Bryan
Jennings, the bank’s bond-underwriting chief in the U.S., was
charged with a hate crime in the Connecticut stabbing of a New
York City cab driver of Middle Eastern descent.
The driver told officers that Jennings assaulted him Dec.
22 with a pen knife and used racial slurs after a 40-mile cab
ride from New York City to his multimillion dollar home, Darien
Police Detective Mark Cappelli said in an interview.
Jennings, 45, has worked at Morgan Stanley for his entire
securities-industry career, starting in 1993, according to his
regulatory record with the Financial Industry Regulatory
Authority. He is co-head of North American fixed-income capital
markets, having worked his way up from associate; vice president,
and then principal, for debt capital markets; to executive
director for investment banking and then managing director for
fixed income capital markets.
On the night of the incident, Jennings and the cab driver
had a dispute about the fare for the trip from New York, where
the executive had attended a charity event, to his $3.4 million
home in Darien. While sitting in his driveway, Jennings refused
to pay the $200 cab fare, the driver told police.

Second Degree Assault

Cappelli said Jennings is charged with second-degree
assault, for allegedly cutting the cab driver, theft of services
and intimidation by bias or bigotry. He was released on $9,500
bond and will make a court appearance on March 9.
“My client was the victim of a crime that night -- not the
perpetrator of one,” Eugene Riccio, an attorney for Jennings,
said. “He was abducted against his will from his own driveway.
Fortunately he was able to escape.”
Riccio said the driver made an “exorbitant demand” closer
to $300.
The driver drove off with Jennings in the car and
threatened to return to New York, Riccio said. The driver, who
wasn’t identified, was trying to find an officer to settle the
dispute, police said.
Riccio said the driver was “seconds away” from the on-
ramp to the highway heading back to the city when Jennings drew
a pen knife from his pocket.
“He pulled it out in an effort to try to get the man to
stop,” Riccio said. “He was in a car that was racing down the
road, disobeying traffic signals with the back door open.”
Jennings denied making any racial slurs, Riccio said.

How about this one?

Mansion servant enslaved by uber-rich New York family for nearly six years

A wealthy New York woman is facing criminal charges after being accused of keeping an illegal immigrant as an indentured servant and forcing her to live in a closet for nearly six years.

Documents posted on the Smoking Gun allege that Annie George, 39, and her now-deceased husband, Mathai Kolath George, hired an illegal immigrant from the Indian state of Kerala. The immigrant, identified only as "V.M.," was promised about $1,000 a month in wages to live in the family's 34-room, 30,000-square-foot home, known as Llenroc mansion, which houses a helicopter pad, 15 fireplaces, marble flooring, 24-karat gold gilded ceilings and a glass elevator. V.M. was tasked with taking care of the Georges' four young children, along with performing household duties in the mansion located about 20 miles north of Albany.

New York's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Even if V.M. had been allowed to leave the residence at the end of a regular 40-hour workweek, she would have been entitled to a minimum, pretax income of $290 per week, or $1,160 per month.

Instead, the "forced labor situation" (as described in the court papers) was even worse than the already-below minimum wage offer of $1,000 month. V.M. received 85 cents an hour, working 17-hour days, seven days a week, over the 67 months she was kept inside the George residence.

All told, V.M. received only about $29,000 over the five and a half years she was forced to work for the George family.

The Smoking Gun reports that immigration agents received a tip from the National Human Trafficking Resource Center last year and removed V.M. from the George's property. The U.S. Department of Labor conducted its own investigation and says V.M. is entitled to $206,000 in back wages. She was also allegedly denied health benefits, sick days or any personal time off from her labors.

Annie George, whose husband died in a plane crash in 2009, reportedly called V.M.'s son three times, suggesting he "tell his mother to tell authorities that she was a relative of George's family and was only staying at George's house as a guest." However, V.M.'s son recorded the calls, which included a plea from Annie George, "If she says anything about working, it would become a big crime. They'll start adding up all the taxes and everything, for all the time."

According to the Smoking Gun documents, the George estate had been put up for sale for a reported $30 million.

Annie George appeared in court on Wednesday before a federal magistrate, facing charges of encouraging and inducing an illegal alien to reside in the U.S.

from another bloomberg article today - contrasting dem/rep presidencies past 50 years:
"But the spreadsheet says that, over the past half-century, the unemployment rate has fallen under Democratic presidents and risen under Republicans. This remains true even if you assume a one-year lag in the time it takes for a president’s policies to take effect.
Which party’s presidents have done better with the most important statistic, which is GDP -- basically the size of the economy? Incredibly, it’s a tie! Applying a one-year lag, the Democratic presidents surge ahead by a minuscule 0.01 percent. Inflation? A straight comparison shows that Democrats have done a better job, but the one-year lag gives lower inflation to the Republicans.

Republicans win on lower taxes -- no surprise there -- but lower spending (the stat I’d been dreading) goes to the Democrats. Put it all together and neither party has anything like a monopoly on economic virtue, even when defined in strictly conservative terms. I’m sorry for this anticlimactic result, but numbers don’t lie.
"

Today is an interesting day. It started at 5 am. I went to Beth Israel with a young woman who is giving birth today. I just left; she is in early stages of labor. I am going back a little later. Somehow, I became the health care proxy, which seems like a huge amount of responsibility; basically I am on call. It is a long story how I got to know her, but I never expected to be doing this. They will call when she goes into heavy labor and I will be there for encouragement and hand holding or cheerleading.....I guess it is moral support.

Having an impacted wisdom tooth removed doesn't hurt....unless the anesthesia wears off before you've had the chance to dose yourself with the mega painkillers and then you either think you are going to die from the pain or you want to DIE to make it go away. This much I know about. It's no joke. However, I know nothing about child birth, so I can't comment there/compare.

"Kidney stones = worst pain a man can have."

My friend M, a large-sturdy-man-tough-as-nails-stoic, had kidney stones and told me it brought him to his knees and made him cry. They took him down! The look on his face when he told me about it told the story. NOT GOOD.

Hello all;

This is your correspondent reporting in from Cartegena, Columbia. Fantastic city. I was able to hire a taxi AND personal tour guide to take me around the place for roughly two hours. The cost? Forty bucks. The old part of Cartegena looks very much like the Spanish colonial town that it was. The new part looks like Miami. The city is booming, with a burgeoning middle class.

Arkady you should have asked them if that meant that the woman is in charge of external affairs, so to speak.

That's actually a more restrictive view than what I generally encountered in the Arabian Peninsula, where there is near-universal agreement that women are in charge of matters inside the home. Their role in the public sphere is a matter of contention, of course.

LOL so I was looking at Lonely Planet's travel forums for my Tajikistan trip this summer, and figure out what any major travel issues might be. Turns out Tajikistan is getting up to date quite rapidly and I have nothing to worry about:

"I am relocating to Dushanbe in March 2012. I haven't been able to locate a yoga studio or a gym that offer yoga classes within the city, and I wonder if anyone out there can help me locate one.
On a slightly different note, I am a certified yoga teacher (YogaWorks 200-hr certification program) and have been practicing and teaching yoga for the last 5 years. I practice Vinyasa Flow/Hatha yoga and plan to continue with my home-practice when I'm in Dushanbe. Please let me know if you're interested in practicing yoga with me. I'd be more than happy to lead a class if there's enough interest and if we can find an open practice space, free of charge."

Ok went out for a while there, and just got back. Missed lech's baiting on Andrew Breitbart.

I'm sorry for his family, in that he died very young, and unexpectedly. That's hard and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

As six said, his treatment of Shirley Sharrod was despicable, and certainly was not made up for by his treatment of Anthony Weiner, who was guilty of nothing other than letting his little Anthony dictate to his brain how to be extremely stupid. Neither case needed Breitbart's "professional journalism". I don't see where he was so courageous or spectacular.

worcestire is really good in turkey meatloaf (i used to make that a lot). damnit, now i want to go back to the supermarket to make turkey meatloaf, but meat is SO expensive , every once in a while they have shady brook farms (i think that's the brand) turkey meatballs (12 of them) on sale for 2.99. actually had that yesterday, but it's not as good as turkey meatloaf. at the supermarket tonight i bought a bag of potatoes for 1.99 i think (they were on sale) so ill just be making baked potatoes this weekend with sour cream and hot peppers. (both were on sale too). yay this weekend's meals pretty much all cost like 6 bux!

cuz EVERYTHING is cross tracked these days and then cross tracked again over and over. i guess? so many linking online bill paying things, etc.

so i had an epiphany tonight. i dont think im going to be staying in park slope after this summer, but im unsure about my dog. he ADORES my roommate and his boyfriend for the last 3 1/2 years, sleeps down there every night, acts like they are the alpha dogs of the house, etc.

my goal neighborhoods to move to are:

staten island (close to the ferry)

downtown jersey city (but rents are just as high as brooklyn over there and then the added cost of the path train? eh. i dont know)

bay ridge

newark (this is a weird one i know...) i might be able to offset the cost of the transportation with a bit cheaper apt probably in the ironbound district. the nicer parts are all luxury towers and while i can totally afford a studio, would be on par with my rent here, i wont qualify for one.

thought about bushwick for a second then was like oh hells no. it's ghetto and moonface all rolled up into one. dont want that at ALL.

my ideal neighborhood is one that has no potential to be gentrified anytime soon but stil affordable and not in the ghetto. i also do not want to move anywhere that i stick out like a sore thumb. im hoping the rent doesnt get raised much this year but im not holding my hopes up. somehow in the last year ive managed to pay my student loans and still afford to live here, but completely have isolated myself to the point where i have NO SOCIAL LIFE at ALL and can't afford to do ANYTHING. dont tell me to quit smoking, i KNOW that already, but it's not in the cards at this point for me. (yeah i know retarded). i just want to live somewhere that i dont see moonfaces, dont see drug deals, and a nice commute (the commute can totally be long as hell i dont care.... i <3 my commute time) but it cant be a commute where im standing up like a sardine, which is why i think bay ridge is a good bet, cuz it's still on the R and i love the R train.

any suggestions on how to make myself appealing to landlords?! should i try saving up a few months worth of rent in leu of them being all worried i will skip out on rent and unreliable, which im not, i ALWAYS pay my rent. ALWAYS. realistically im looking for an apartment (i dont care if it's even 200 square feet) that is under 1000 dollars, possibly under 800 (i know crazy). i can't do another roommate thing at this point... i love my roommate like mad but this is too expensive for me if the rent goes up any more and the psychic part of my brain already knows that with the next rent increase it's going to go up a lot. im not stupid.

my dog is a thorn on my side and im HATING myself for feeling that way cuz i love him, but at the same time... ugh. funny that, how now you cant not rent to people based on their kids but you can discriminate for pets. sorry, but kids do more damage than cats and dogs.

all of the "affordable housing" rentals that the city has put up are just not in my league, i look at the site all the time. they always have studios and one bedrooms go up for like 600-1000 bux, all over the city, mostly in the bronx, but MANY in manhattan and brooklyn. the price cut off is absurd, id have to be making less than 30K. it's like wow, talk about more hands to mouth living? 1000 dollar studio apartment making 30K as a single? the prices are so fucked up, i wish they upped them just a tad for other people to qualify to get into those apartments other than people just barely making more than minimum wage.

relocating to another part of the country scares the SHIT out of me and i dont think it's possible as i would need savings and some sorta safety net. i will never drive a car (is that maybe a bad thing? keeping me from opportunities?) sometimes i think nyc is kinda sorta driving me a little nuts?

i used to think lech was a major freak with that battery toy issue, but i totally think he is right on that. nothing worse than getting a toy that needs batteries, and they always need the most obscure batteries like 6 double D's or 4 C cells :-/ and that is expensive and most kids are stupid and will leave the thing on and run thru the life of the batteries thus the to is essentially dead. also teaching children that the things they explore and play with need some sort of external thing to make them run is just a tad weird. growing up i think i had more fun playing in cardboard boxes than the shit they came in.

funny, i sorta hate rechargeable batteries that everything comes with no, it's so hard to change them, they suck ass and eventually get worse and worse and the cost per parts and maintenanance is more than if you bought batteries outright that you can just pop in, but whatever.

i agree with lech that toys are more fun for kids that dont have batteries, creative-wise... as long as they arent 300 dollar a set infant moonface blocks that they seem to sell at the local toy stores around here, it's all good. whatever happend to old fashion shit like Twister and Monopoly? no batteries involved and tons of fun. actually monopoly is awful i was never good at that game at ALL (or twister).

#2 is the most important, if my dog is still around and healthy i wont be moving from here if i can somehow manage to do so. the rent increase, if i can stay, i will somehow manage to make do-able. probably a really stupid financial decision, but it's a loving one that people without pets might not understand. in the last 3.5 year he's become my roommate and his boyfriend's dog way more than my dog anyway, and i dont want to disrupt his happiness.
