How long must we wait for lab puppy pics??????

On another note, i just read that Rosie O'Donnell has a gay brother and he's a state representative. I didn't know she had a gay brother. Not that I'd be interested. he was married to his partner last week.

Arkady, you'd know this...Was there ever a time in the history of the NYC Subway system where they gave out transfers??? This morning I went from my stop to High St to drop stuff off at Xing's apt and then continued on to manhattan, paying the $2.50 again. A transfer would have been nice.

DIBS, I get a transfer when I take the Coney Island Avenue bus from Cortelyou to Bartel Pritchard Square/15th Street and change for the F train on to Cobble Hill.

I think that in order to get a transfer to have to 'switch' to another line/mode within a certain radius, you can't just get off and then back on same line at same stop. If you had walked over to Clark Street and switched to 2/3 (which I know wouldn't have been useful to you, but as an example) you may have gotten a transfer.

Nah, you wouldn't have gotten a transfer in the past for the A to the 2/3. There is really no stop to transfer in Brooklyn though. The only place is Fulton St in Manhattan. You used to get transfers if there was some service problem. And always with the buses.

I forget when the two fare zone disappeared; bus to subway (or vice versa) transfer works via Metrocard, but a 2/3 subway with short walk to a/c in Brooklyn Heights won't work. The transfer capability on the Metrocard works within 2 hours.

"He was particularly mean, nasty and condescending in his "Insider" comments. And I'm talking about the house, not what he said to me."

No he wasn't. He just expressed his opinion, that he didn't like the house. Certainly nothing worse that what others say everyday. He would have said his piece and been done with it if you hadn't started world war III with him. I would say a fair reading of the post made you look much worse than he did. Then you had to jump on Mopar both there, and bring it back here. Minard is a great guy, and I don't know why you don't leave him alone.

Yes they are. As a consultant, you can also write off an office space in your primary residence. You can write off post-its and other office supplies, some amount of entertainment, expenses like buying a computer or printer or software for business use. Stamps, envelopes, photo copies. Publications related to your work. And other stuff. Talk to an accountant. SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS!

You get a transfer when you go from a bus to the train, or vice versa, within the space of a couple of hours, or two connecting bus lines. You don't get one between two train stations, especially on the same line. But you don't know what a bus is, so that won't be happening.

I would think $2.50 wouldn't even be considered real money to the 1%.

Well, I'm outta here for today, gotta run.

All I see when I look at these pictures is the architect's ego.
There is no trace of an actual family living there. I

There are three color-coordinated toys, German I'm sure, personally selected and positioned by the architect -and you think that makes it look like human beings inhabit here? Look at the bookshelves, they look like a West Elm display.

I usually enjoy most of what Minard posts actually, and oftentimes agree. What I don't like is when he gets on his high horse in the condescending way that he does.. I also think that the Insider thread is different from others. I think you can voice disagreement with choices there but I think that thread (The Insider) deserves more respect in the comments about what you disagree with than does, say, the HOTD.

Cute puppies!!!! I was telling Mrs. Slopey about the puppy adoption last night and she rememberd how her mother adopted brother and sister lab mix puppies. Unfortuantely, my mother in law was quite small and, of course, the dogs did not stay puppies for long, and each eventually grew to outweigh her. She separated her shoulder once when they saw a rabbit and tried to chase it. Eventually she had to walk them each individually (3x day each) and just drop the leash whenever one started to give chase.

Re: transfers

Metrocard will automatically credit you with a transfer from bus to subway or subway to bus if you are within something like a 2-hour window. For subway to subway transfers, you get off one subway line, cross the platform or walk to another platform as the case may be, and wait for the train you want and get on it. Welcome to New York, dibs, will you be staying long?

Bus transfers very common in the pre metrocard days -- you asked for one when you boarded the first bus and the driver gave you a slip of paper that you handed to the driver of the bus you transferred onto. I imagine you could do this bus-to-subway and vice versa, though I don't really know. Cobble and benson would know.

Just seems weird all round to me that 1) someone has the interior of their house photographed and invites comments from strangers 2) said strangers express publicly such strong opinions about interior decor. I can understand it about exteriors because streetscapes matter to the community as a whole.

Maybe they are getting a discount from the architect for advertising? I saw a similar article recently featuring people I knew from high school (in 'Cheshire Life' magazine, no less!) but I know they were doing it to subtly promote their business.

My Dutch colonial house in KC was so pretty. It had great casement windows, bottom half of exterior fieldstone and I had upper painted dark grey. White trim around windows. It was built in the 20s. I went there a year ago and drove past and it was painted brown, cute teal painted wood door with brass knocker was replaced with a heavy solid brown modern door with three little brick sized windows, pretty casement windows replaced with solid windows. Landscaping removed. I was SICK. I had to go back to the hotel and breathe deeply and tell myself it isn't my house anymore, it was a good experience living there, I have my own place now and they can do with it what they want etc. etc. etc. But it was a shock. It was transformed into a turd.

One of these days I'm going to post a picture of a renovated building on the corner of Ave P and Coney Island Ave, almost directly across the street from that Turkish restaurant that Kens talks about. It is a pretty standard 19th century building with a store on the ground floor and 2 stories above, stonework, cornice, etc. It is owned by a well-known store in those parts (Crawfords). They kept the cornice, but replaced the original pressed tin bay with more modern metal trim, and the windows are all casement single pane. The stonework was preserved, cleaned and pointed. The renovation was well, well done: an imaginitive mix of old and new. That's why I find people like Minard and Mopar so tedious. They try to reduce taste down to a set of rigid rules.

DIBS, if you want to use your retirement leisure time, you can take the B25 bus from Fulton St. right to Xing's door, and then as long as it's less than 2 hours since the first swipe on the bus, you'll get a free transfer to the subway with your metrocard.

Before there were free transfers between subways and buses (which started with Metrocards) there was a free transfer between the 7th Ave. bus (B67) or the Myrtle Ave. bus (don't know the number) at Jay St./Borough Hall. Some historic anomaly, maybe from when they abolished trolley lines? Also it cost 2 fares to go to Far Rockaway on the A train--you needed another token to exit the station in Far Rock.

Nope, just read it on occasion for a laugh when I am visiting home. It caters to the 'Cheshire Set', i.e. much wealthier folks than us who live in the outer suburbs / countryside, e.g.:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/northern-exposure-the-cheshire-set-419112.html

That said, the people I knew whose houses / lifestyles were featured are very nice & I hope they do well with their business.

I liked it too. Probably I would not choose it for myself but it was well done. I thought that what ENY had to say about creativity was excellent. I do not believe in these rigid notions of what is "correct". It is the way I don't believe that period perfect brownstone restorations are an article of faith. I am not an adherent of the wood worshipping cult, where natural wood always trumps white paint, old broken down original shit trumps the clean and modern etc. etc. We live in 2012 and houses should be comfortable to us and meet our needs now. I also LIKE LIGHT.

Adequate light is a challenge in brownstones due to the natural limitations of having only front and back natural light. The Victorians may have been fine in heavy-draperied, wood-paneled gloom, but it doesn't work for me AT ALL. That is why I have no problem with white paint and natural or dark wood as an accent in a brownstone. And I have plenty of cans in my lower kitchen.

benson, dibs, et al, -- re the Insider thread, I find the style a little cold (my general reaction to current style in modern interior renovation) but certainly nothing worth arguing ad nauseum or making snide, posturing remarks about. 1. It looks well thought out and nicely done. 2. The owners are happy and enjoying their home. 3. It's not my house.
Back when I used to hang out over there, I might have let myself get drawn into an argument about it, but what would be the point? I'm kind of glad to let go of that stuff a little bit. I'm all for people enjoying their homes and even showing off a little if they want, whatever their style.
I thought brownstoner was at the peak of its value to buyers and owners when it was doing series like the parlor kitchen reno threads and the bathroom reno threads. Show in short succession how lots of folks addressed a particular problem -- all sorts of styles and decisions, lots of stuff to work from for anyone else attempting same.

The insider thread is basically just real estate porn. I guess that's ok, but I wish Cara drilled deeper. For instance, they talked about triple-glazed window. I would love to see an artcile discuss if the improvements in energy efficiency are worth the additonal cost (compared to double-glazed windows). My gut tells me no, but I could be wrong. That kind of discussion would be really useful.

Me too -- big windows, space, not much to darken a room. Very early on on brownstoner, folks would complain about, say, painted trim in a Flatbush victorian and you'd get these Victorian v. Edwardian debates. We have a "white trim" house and I'm really happy about it.

oh jeez. the yelp reviews of this hospital do NOT look good

" friend went here after accidentally slicing his foot open with glass. To summarize:

-- nurse literally ripped off his bandages thus creating the gash to bleed profusely
-- nurse tells him to "chill out" and "relax" with an attitude. friend is crying and screaming in pain
-- leaves friend back in the waiting room for at least 4 more hours
-- a meth head in the waiting room yells at old guy/janitor, friend tells him to leave janitor alone. gets bottle thrown at his head (misses) and then is attacked in the waiting room by meth head. people try to hold back the meth while my friend is on the ground, bleeding from his foot wound.
-- nurse finally calls him into the triage area and the cops come to "help". they allow the meth head into the triage area about 5 beds away. friend decides to press charges against meth head and asks them to move the guy (obviously fearing for his life). the cops say "oh, you'll be fine" ?!?!
-- almost 12 hours after coming into this hospital, he finally gets stitched up. probably because they cannot stitch you up after 12 hours have passed. NOT because he almost got beaten in the waiting room

this is a very brief summary of my friend's experience. i'm writing this on friend's behalf because I cannot believe the full details of this story.

What a terrible way to treat a person who is hurt and bleeding - and to allow a potentially deadly situation to spin out of control.

if you value your life, do not go to this hospital.

Rob, when I had Kidney Stone #1 and didn't know what it was, I went to the ER there. Ouch. I narrowly missed being hit by an exploding light bulb. A friend's father had mistakenly put the wrong bulbs in a chandelier above a bed (this was in Abu Dhabi and the house was very old and poorly-built). I was sitting on the bed, got up to talk to my friend in the hallway, and the light bulb exploded, shot out of the chandelier, and landed on the bed where I was sitting. The bedspread had a burn mark where it landed.

I was struggling with my screwed up hand (WHEN will this freaking thing be healed??) and I disengaged the major pieces. I sort of hit my bad hand and the whole top part went flying into the wall. lol im setting this up for my office.. (i think im going to pick the day for it on my birthday as well!)

We would love to offer your staff a stress relief event at your office at no cost; we would bring in licensed massage therapists and give your employees 10-minute chair massages. We know work can be stressful so we would like to offer your staff a moment of relaxation during the workday while we introduce our practice, which is just up the street from your office. We want your employees to know about our stress relief, sports medicine, and pain management services, which are typically covered by insurance.

Please let me know if you have any dates in mind that would work for your staff. Additionally, we need very little space for the event to take place, just enough to fit a small massage chair wherever it's most convenient for you. We also provide a sign-up sheet ahead of time so that everyone can pick a time to get their massage without disruption to their work.

"Since the party is rather large, the food court could not accommodate us and the Magician/Balloon Twister so we will be having pizza, cake and entertainment at the (REDACTED) Clubhouse. Legiondog had a really bad day yesterday. :o(

We went out for a bit in the afternoon and when we got back he didn't seem his usual self. Didn't bark heartily or wag his tail.
I walk into the kitchen and see blood all over the small wooden fence at the top of the stairs leading to the basement. Then I see bloody paw prints all over the kitchen floor.
I said "WTF??"
I thought legiondog cornered some small animal and devoured it in the kitchen.
Then he came over and I saw his paws and his lips had dried blood on them.
Looking closely at the fence I see that he was trying to chew his way through the wood!
...and it was a lot of blood.
The kids started crying about legiondog and mrs.legion was all upset.
I examined him and noticed that he cut the inside of his lip on the wood but otherwise he was ok, so I let him go outside and hang in the backyard while I cleaned up the mess.

I heard the chirping of a smoke alarm battery and I soon realized what happened.
He has always been afraid of that sound, since I rescued him 12 years ago. They probably had that sound going on all the time in the trashy house where I found him.
The chirping went off in the alarm and he must have started to panic yesterday.

We gave him a bath and cleaned him up. He seemed ok this morning after a good night's sleep, but he's not 100% yet.

Less chance for sneaky politicians to try control people's behavior via 'incentives'.

Capital gains is taxed at 15%.
Income is taxed at Marginal rates from 10% - 35%.
If you live in Mozambique you don't pay any US Federal Income tax.

Those are the ground rules.
Plan and play accordingly.
If you don't like them, vote and change them.
Otherwise you will sound like an uninformed boob.

"If you live in Mozambique you don't pay any US Federal Income tax."

Several ways in which this could not be true.
If you are a US citizen / permanent resident, regardless of where you live, it depends on the difference between your US and Mozambique taxes and the % of your income sourced from the US.

Lol - to the conversation the other day about the Facebook IPO. I just saw this piece about a hedge fund manager saying that he will participate & supposedly why:

http://www.citywire.co.uk/wealth-manager/why-glg-technology-wants-a-bit-of-facebook-pie/a563449?ref=wealth-manager-latest-news-list

Hmm, could he be pumping the stock because: 1) he already has a small stake 2) he is very likely to get a good allocation on the IPO (his firm is a big commission payer) and wants to push the 'long term' thesis so he can flip it...

Six, what do you think should be done about Iran Nuclear Weapons capability?>
Edited at February 3, 2012 4:37 PM
February 3, 2012 4:47 PM - sixyearsandcounting
DCB, there are no good options. For now the best option seems to be to continue the cold war of attrition - sanctions, targeted killings of nuclear scientists, and so on. But all of these things have the effect of rallying Iranians (including dissidents) behind their nation's sovereignty.

If Israel strikes Iran, Hezbollah would almost certainly attack Israel with far greater force than in 2006. Al-Assad might declare war as well in order to save his own skin. Who knows how the new Egypt would react? Israel and the US would be at far greater risk of terrorist attacks than right now, and Iran is far more capable in that regard than just about anyone. Lots of uncertainty, especially with the current situation in Syria. Israel might wait to see what happens there.

There is the possibility of a Grand Bargain, because the Iranian government is not stupid or irrational. If we lift all sanctions, restore diplomatic relations, and drop the regime change policy (in effect allowing the Iranian people to decide their own future), Iran would have to drop the nuclear program, support for Hezbollah and Syria, end support of terrorism, and so on. This would probably be possible only if Israel and the Palestinians reach a peace agreement. Therefore it isn't possible at the present time.

I think my hand therapy experience is interesting. I sit with basically the same people 3X a week and I have gotten to know a group of people who are trying to get their hands, fingers, wrists, arms and shoulders to work again. The therapist is an occupational therapist and has all kinds of equipment and toys and objects to subtly move and exercise all the muscles, tendons and ligaments affected. I spent some time talking to a guy, in his late 60s I think, with an injured shoulder who spends hours there 3X a week. I didn''t want to be intrusive and ask questions, but today I felt I could ask what happened. He was run over by a car, crossing the street. In July. His shoulder was broken in many places. He has a great attitude though; he works very hard and has come a long way.

CGAR, i had to go digging thru photobucket to find this pic... it's the lab that i slept with as a kid.. your new dogs remind me of her (sorry i was so dickhead about hating on labs... but like i said earlier, i thought you were getting the dorky labs, not the nicer ones). the lab in this picture with me was babysitter sometimes, and actually socialized me in many ways. i dont have any vivid memories of her at ALL, but i do have something... not sure what that something is exactly, but i guess if you slept with a dog the first 3 years of your life, it has some effect.

i asked my grandmother one TIME why they even had her and she didn't know. none of her kids too care of it and she didnt like taking care of it either but i guess had to. and it was old. on one hand i <3 everything that is going on that picture, on the other hand i am beyond grossed out lol.

and what is with the mandala(mandela?) imprint in the middle of your picture? is that a watermark that you created or just random? i can see many good times you will be having with those two, especially if that is a random picture. spooky! my dog's name was Princess (irony, huh?). what are you dogs' names? im shocked you said you were going to let other people name your dogs for you, but i guess that's not that that awful. Duke came pre-named, and it fits him to a T. i would have probably called him something totally idiotic anyway. im halfway thru the Michael Vig book about those pitbulls who were bred to dogfight and omg if i ever get a dog away i want to get a Cuban Bloodhound! they were the nasty bad in the public's eye dog before german shepherds, then dobermins, then pitbulls. there are no bad dogs, just dogs that awful people decided is the breed that is going to be bad ass.

if anyone is on facebook add the group BAD RAP, they are awesome. ive been a member of their pages for years and was totally floored when half the book that im currently reading is about their efforts from how they started to current!!! thank you random park slope person who left that book on your stoop! anyone have any suggestions on how i can queen it up and get seen by a doctor faster than the sniffling anchor babies on the list before me?
