The picture is of the intersection of Flatbush and 5th, looking South.
The right foreground is not the community garden at pacific and Flatbush, and the foreground left is now AY.
At the top edge in the middle is the Triangle Sports building.

No doubt Kim Jong-il is in a warmer place than us right now.

If I have a flight from JFK between 9 am and 10 pm, I always take airtrain.
I usually take LIRR due to a faster trip and easier with luggage, but I occasionally take the A.

So now it's Kim Jung-Un?
A 27 year old with a weakness for video games and Western luxuries is leading a nation of 25 Million, an army of 1 million and nuclear weapons galore.

I should become a social theorist.
Why not?
I've already described Legion's Theory of Causal Attenuation.
I'm going to describe this new social theory as:
Legion's Theory of Tangential Humanism.

How else to describe what we are seeing in Egypt and North Korea?
In the West (read USA) we have the luxury of discussing nuanced notions of human rights, social contracts and fairness.
Meanwhile, around the world we see a different dynamic in play.
Legion's Theory of Tangential Humanism states the following:

Highly advanced social systems and societal structures describe increasingly complex humanistic notions of law and order which are increasingly at odds with the more basic societal structures of unstable nations.
Ideas of humanistic ideals become inversely proportional to societal stability.

Here's the kicker:

The more advanced and humanistic certain societies become,
the easier it is for unstable societies to feed off of them for their own advancement
and to aid in their continued oppression of mankind.

Pretty gruesome pictures from Egypt. This is the same military that has received billions of our taxpayer dollars In many places it's the police, not the military, doing the head-busting - unlike the military, the Egyptian police can be trusted to be brutal since they are not conscripted. The average soldier sees people just like him in the protests.

The tear gas canisters say "Made in the USA" - what kind of message does that send to the world?! Congress should pass a law that says all tear gas made in the USA and shipped abroad must be labeled "Made in China".

No Dave, it's the Salafists we need to worry about in Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood is a very pragmatic conservative institution that has survived for decades by playing it safe. There's also a big spectrum within the Brotherhood, just like within any other party. But the Salafists are really scary - the best thing would be if the Brotherhood can work out a coalition government with some of the parties on the Egyptian left in order to shut the Salafists out.

tehehe,

Think about it lechacal,
we handed North Korea crucial nuclear and missile technology in the 90's due to our advanced humanistic ideals only to see it being used against us as a bargaining chip and against the North Koreans themselves.

The market is really setting up for a tremendous rally....

"Speculators reduced bets on commodities to a 31-month low on mounting concern that global economic growth is slowing.
Money managers cut combined net-long positions across 18 U.S. futures and options by 9.6 percent to 532,521 contracts in the week ended Dec. 13, Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show. That’s the lowest since April 28, 2009. "

For some reason they use it a lot - it's very rare for historians, political scientists, etc. "Overlapping" and "embedded" are too 99% for anthropologists.

Here's an example: "Such strategies help us see not only how media are embedded in people's quotidian lives but also how consumers and producers are themselves imbricated in discursive universes, political situations, economic circumstances, national settings, historical moments, and transnational flows, to name only a few relevant contexts."

Not so sure of that. Although Chinese history is quite fascinating and indeed helpful in understanding rhe Chinese mentality, it is not NECESSARY as it is in the Middle East where the historic influences are much more relevant to why and how current socities and politics behave. I'd say the Middle Easter history is far more useful

The debacle at Cooper Union continues. If you have time, get a load of this letter just released by the Board of Trustees.

https://admin.imodules.com/s/1289/images/editor_documents/financial_narrative_2011.pdf

Takes the art of shifting the blame to new heights. Nah, the fact that we decided to build a new Taj Mahal engineering building, instead of renovating a perfectly functional 50-year-old building had nothing to do with our financial predicament. None at all.

Not a single head has rolled over this debacle.

Unfortunately, I think the school is doomed to be taken over by a larger institution.

randi, you ignorant slut,
that's the point of Legion's Theory of Tangential Humanism!

However much we castigate ourselves over our failure to achieve the excruciatingly high points of "fairness" and "humanistic" goals,
chance or fate or even the outright influence of our own society has seen fit to put the fate of 25 million North Koreans in the hands of a 27 year old, sitting on a nuclear stockpile with no leadership history and no proven military experience.

Our own humanistic goals are only tangentially connected to actual reality as it unfolds most of the time.

I fail to see the purpose in posting pictures of attractive, or unattractive people of any persuasion. You are either making sexual objects of them, or making fun of them, neither of which is particularly nice.

I'm afraid I goaded them, MM, with my remark about the conservatives' choice of the Cheney/Thatcher pinup. They think they are proving me wrong with all these pics. December 19, 2011 11:53 AM - MontroseMorris
Whatever. You guys can do what you want.

I really don't have much of a sense of humor on this topic.

There is nothing wrong with the way Maxine Waters, or even Barney Frank, look, they look no better, or no worse, than most of us here, and the attractiveness of Michelle Malkin is totally obscured by the vitriol she spews. Just because she is pretty doesn't mean anything whatsoever. Is her opinion more or less valid because it comes in an attractive package? Is Barney Frank's opinion worth less because he's not Brad Pitt?

We are so hung up on looks in this society that we overlook valuable talents and skills in people who are not supermodels or Adonises, and overvalue the opinions and worth of the beautiful. As a society, we tell our children the worst thing they can be on the face of this earth is fat, leading to serious diseases and even suicide, to emulate people who have been airbrushed to perfection, an unattainable goal. We make television shows about little 7 years old girls doing beauty contests where they are dressed like mini-hookers, the winners the most perfect little made up dolls. What is wrong with our society?

I know you guys are just fooling around, but it's all part of a societal trend which really has a detrimental effect on everyone.

Rant over.

December 19, 2011 12:55 PM - lechacal
Sorry MM, but what I said is pretty much irrefutable objective absolute and total truth:

1. Hotties are sexual objects (how can you possibly disagree with that? I mean they're hotties forchrissakes)

2. Doesn't matter what you say about a hottie, the hottie is still a sexual object.

3. In women's studies classes, they try to teach you that if you don't talk about what a hottie a hottie is that magically makes them not be sexual objects.

Which one of these factual statements do you challenge???

I'm insulted that all the cat ladies are lumped into one homogenous group. Hmmphf. Typical male chauvinism. :)

Some of your points are true, lech- but the one you missed is that ugly thinking from a hottie still looks ugly. Michelle Malkin, perfect case. An ugly personality filled with venom in a nice looking package. Ann Coulter- seriously ugly but blonde, so she gets lots of play (ditto Elizabeth what's-er-name from The View.). MM's point is that the only reason they get play is that they are good-looking, because their message sucks.

And have you ever actually taken a women's studies class?
December 19, 2011 1:17 PM - Donatella
6, I am going out in 5 minutes -- but can you tell me about Carlos Eire. I found his books really interesting, funny and beautiful. He is 61 I think, which is the dead on age for all the Cuban kid refugees who came here without their parents in the early 60s as part of the Peter Pan program. The first book of his memoirs won the National Book award. He wrote other academic books; he is a professor at Yale of history -- and religious studies -- which is what you have to be to be a historian of the late middle ages to the Reformation and counterreformation. It is an interesting story how he got to that area of study and how he even made it through high school given the stuff that happened to him after getting to the US. The memoirs are lyrically beautiful and hilarious. One of the things I got from waiting for snow in Havana is the physical, crazy exhuberance of boyhood; it really set off this flood of associations of all that I remembered about boys growing up, my brothers, the kids in school. It rivals Huckleberry Finn....

December 19, 2011 2:34 PM - BoerumHillScott
OK, this takes a bit more time, but here's the count of the number of comments a few words show up in. This does not take into account that a comment may have the same word multiple times:
fuck: 297
plusa: 171
stfu: 99
shit: 691
moonface: 212
buttsecks: 24
wine: 234
asshat: 32

I am not sure how much I trust those results, since the database search claims the word 'cat' appears 0 times.
That may just be a case of the server telling us what it thinks of cat pictures.

And that's all the sql I'm doing today.

Dave grabbed my ass at the party. I'm considering suing him for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Not because I don't know where his hands have been, but because I DO have an idea where his hands have been.
December 19, 2011 9:16 PM - rf
Tsk, tsk, Dave.
December 19, 2011 9:19 PM - BoerumHillScott
Snappy, if I grabbed you, it was only to keep from falling over drunk, I swear.
Please don't sue!

so basically youre all a bunch of perverts! oh get this, you know that lady in prospect heights who got killed by fire in the elevator? my roommate's boyfriend lives near her and recognized her. he said she used to walk into the bodega and dance and say stuff like "my pussy is hungry for some food" and random weird stuff. sad what happened to her. she sounded like a funny woman.

I don't know,
on the one hand, recalling dorm life, it wasn't unusual for dudes to grab each other or pull each others pants down, that was practically de rigeur,
on the other hand, maybe you guys totally weren't expecting to fend off a grab at your sacks.

Scott, if anything, I may have grabbed you while I was trying not to do a drunken face-plant!

I hate to say this but it almost sounds funny.

i think it was the squeezing, HARD, and lingering hands that was the worst part. im sorry but cant you become sterile from that?

I enjoyed the Louis Prima / Keely Smith version,
has a similar musical sensibility found in the old Bollywood films.
Like they're imitating in this Heineken commercial:

What's funny Legion? Guys pulling down one another's pants and grabbing each others balls, financial industry colleagues grabbing each others asses at a company Christmas party, PLUSAs grabbing one anothers asses or fending off ball squeezers, PLUSAs gragging other's asses to not be plant faces?
December 19, 2011 9:49 PM - Legion
yo sixyears,
have an extra bag of nuts on us.

...after further consideration,
I can't say the crotch grab incident is funny,
not if you guys don't feel it was.

You are right donatella,
it's inappropriate to grab at strangers and acquaintances of course.

I made the mistake of applying a standard which is common in close quarters with other guys, to a totally different social situation.

j/k Legion. I think this grabbing thing is comic in a slapstick kind of way. Plus, I really enjoyed grabbing this guy's buns in revenge and freaking him out.

I actually feel bad for Jester. I think that he got ribbed here because people wanted to deal with it and not pretend it didn't happen. Plus, he is liked here on the blog. I hope he comes back.

Two more days until I get this cast off. I am so tired of making up stories about what happened to me. The latest is that I had a skydiving accident. Landed in a tree. That seems to be better than falling in the road.
December 19, 2011 10:06 PM - Legion
You really got me there donatella,
but seriously, it does seem like a tightrope walk.
We've known each other for years in the OT and perhaps some of us feel more at ease with it than others and feel they can take it to that level.
I can't say how others took it so I can't really say it's funny.
I'm really only speaking from my own experiences in getting to know other guys living in close quarters.
It wasn't unusual to "pants" someone or give them them a wedgie or pull the shower curtain away.
We're talking college here but I really can't say anything about the details here so, I won't comment on that further.
December 19, 2011 10:12 PM - Donatella
Legion, I would say it was inappropriate and some people were freaked out, but I think the fact that it was mentioned in the OT, complete with graphs means that people (who were victims) can make a joke about it. But it is definitely something that could get a man beat up in certain environments. Definitely not recommended. About me, I had suffered that manager in the workplace and his party misbehavior gave me the delicious chance at freebee revenge.
December 19, 2011 10:16 PM - Legion
I hear you donatella,
I bet that manager still thinks twice about how to approach co-workers at parties!
tehehe.

Fact: gazpacho is the only Spanish food that doesn't suck.

Fact: paella is just retarded.

Fact: Madrid just isn't that great a city.

Fact: I lived there for a year.

Fact: I actually felt kind of bad for leaving and never writing Encarna a letter, not even once (awkward....).

My parents took me to Portugal when I was very young. I don't remember much. Dogs peeing on cars, dogs like everywhere, old men too, maybe they were peeing on cars, I don't know, this was in the early 1980s before the euro made people in third tier European countries worth something.

I went to Madrid in 2000 for a conference. That was it. I went to all the museums. I loved the Prado and went to the Thyssen something, the modern museum and went to Toledo for a day to go to see El Greco paintings at his house and in a church. I also bought two great pocketbooks. I would like to go back and travel around a little.
