I saw there was a big discussion of rentals here last night. Not sure i want to really add more to that but the lack of quality stuff was why I decided to pull my house off the market. it wasn't the price, just that there's nothing well renovated out there if you want a brownstone building with some of those amenities, like character and a yard.

The 'quality', for a 1 bedroom, under $2200 in CH was ridiculous. I wish I'd taken pictures to share. Pathetic, really. To be fair, September/October is not a good time to look in CH ó April/May/June being much much better, but we didn't have that option.

Watch out for the aircraft carrier-sized asteroid passing by today.

Cobble, what I'd really like to do is stay in bed Stuy but there's absolutely no quality out there. I started to look in Boerum Hill, Ft greene and brooklyn Heights and the only things that looked remotely livable were high rises. I'm willing to pay up to $2,700 or so but not for crap. And, if I wanted a high rise, I'd move back to manhattan.

Restricting to BH, FG and BH was because I will not lengthen my commute on something like the F or G train

I think the problem in Bed Stuy is that the owners haven't woken up to the fact that if they made improvements, they could actually get more money than they might think they can.

And whenever they make improvements, the whole place looks like it's right out of Home Depot (which it is) with a tiny kitchen and no counterspace.

The picture was taken on Fulton, looking toward Flatbush.

The building in the left foreground is still there.
The tower building is 2-4 Nevins, and the bottom is still intact.

I was rushing up the street earlier in a really fast walk -- had to meet someone early -- and caught my foot in a raised piece of bluestone. I went flying. Somehow I managed to twist my body mid-fall to land on my butt, like I was sliding into first, so no damage. I overturned my rather large handbag to spill everything....loose change, makeup, keys, tenants rent checks, etc. etc all over the sidewalk.....so then I paused on my knees to pick it all up.

Nov 8 am. Take two.

From the NY Times:

"The woman, Sharon Bialek, said Monday that Mr. Cain had made the advance after she asked him for employment help in 1997 after being fired from the associationís education foundation. "

I think the appropriate response from anyone of either sex asked for "employment help" is "please send your resume to my office. If a suitable opportunity becomes available, you will be asked in for an interview. During the interview, the door will remain open."

yeah but maybe people dont want "quality" apartments with ridiculous frou frou period details. i mean really, what kind of transient renter wants to pay a premium for that shit? there's a lack of cheap housing in this city and youre advocating that landlords renovate apartments in what is supposed to be a cheap area to begin with (and it aint)? all i need is a white box that i can paint any wacky color i want and im good. oh and they are doing something strange to my building. last night i said in the courtyard there is scaffolding on the side of the building that goes to the roof! and when i was home friday there was construction noise all day (that doesnt bother me tho), but this morning i looked out my bedroom window into the alley and there's all these gigantic rope pulleys... what on earth could they be doing? any idea?

Tks, D-Cat. There is a lot of networking that everyone does in the course of getting a job. Meeting Herman Cain socially to discuss a job is something that doesn't surprise me and is par for the course.

Actually, what she described reminded me of an experience I had. The guy didn't touch me but I was at a conference (I was a sales person), I had dinner with a trader who worked at a large crude oil trading company. He was of Chinese descent and I believe he was living in Singapore. I don't know much more about him socially. Anyway, he seemed to think I was a whore. I was generally confused. Does this guy think I am a prostitute? I was ready to talk about the crude oil market, but he was interested in just being.....crude. I was pretty freaked out. I managed to get out of there in one piece. It happens. Some guys are assholes. I will never forget that.

"Tks, D-Cat. There is a lot of networking that everyone does in the course of getting a job."

That kind of casual networking with strangers is going to become a thing of the past. It entails risk to the person being generous with their time, particularly if they have a lot to lose. Sooner or later, women will be subject to these kinds of lawsuits and charges as well. Why take a chance?

i didnt open the link cuz i dont want that kinda thing in the cache on my computer at work, but isnt it in the west village or something? based on the description someone said yesterday it sounds more like a vanity side project for a bored rich bankers housewife more than an vile moonface establishment. i have no problem with luxury goods exactly, just when people start turning things that were never luxury into luxury and causing the prices of the non-luxury counterparts to get their prices jacked. i dont even know what a "bitter" is.

That is true, D-Cat, about strangers being generous with their time in networking. And the old kind of networking where you call up a total stranger and have a vague conversation is a waste of time for everyone. The kind that matters is from friends and colleagues where you have formed bonds and they suggest you talk to A, B or C about a specific idea.

My own experience of "harassment" was a case of a guy misunderstanding the nature of my interest in him. Plus, of course, being an asshole. I was interested in getting business from his firm. At that time, there weren't many women doing what I do. In fact, this is a general problem with women on the "sell side" of the business.....negotiating this minefield.....i.e. "no, this is NOT a date."

M4L, I have the same issue actually with my sidewalks out side of my house. The roots of the sycamore tree have lifted up the bluestone. I tried to have it fixed a few years ago. I got a permit from the DOT and I needed to get one from Landmarks too. I wasted a whole day at the end of which they told me I would have to start over at landmarks. So I gave up on the project. (Why do they make it so hard?)

When I finally get it fixed, I will do it the way I did a lot of things with this house. I will get the bluestone myself, hire a weekend crew and get the whole thing done in a weekend, before it is even a blink on the screen of anybody. No permits.

when i first moved to park slope i was still getting the hang of the actual slopiness and utter disarray of the sidewalk and wound up tripping really hard, ripped my pants and skinned my knee and hands pretty bad. a guy that was walking by said that people trip in that spot ALL the time and the lady who lives there is like 100. i guess i could have sued but i kinda hate sue-happy people. i guess if i had to go to the hospital and i didnt have insurance or something tho i probably would have. my grandmother and her friends used to pull the trip and sue stunts a lot. but honestly it can take YEARS to actually get your money.

DIBS, would you consider giving your tenants the boot and position to sell your pad with you as the tenant for garden level post sale?
#40
November 8, 2011 10:28 AM - dibs
m4l, yes, I would. I thought about that but it would be cruel. I could sell the place, rent my duplex from the buyer for a few months and have the garden level remodeled. The kitchen just needs to be relocated so that there would be a larger bedroom and then a larger front parlour. it wouldn't cost much $$$. But the buyer didn't want that because he thinks that the tenants would stay longer than I would and they are good tenants. Not sure if they would though. They had mentioned to me that they may be looking for a bigger space but I don't think they can realistically afford what they have in mind.

I spent Sunday afternoon with a guy named Claudio. Claudio works in Houston for Verizon. Claudio was amazing. This after spending an hour with somebody on 42nd St and 6th who somehow installed my phone so it couldn't get contacts without scrolling through my 1821 Yahoo email contacts (yes, I really do have that many). So I spent 1.5 hours speaking to two other people on Sunday in Houston (not Claudio). They couldn't help me. I was on the verge of being abusive and I figured let me cut it off here. I called back later in the day and got Claudio. We spent about 1 and a half hours together uninstalling, reinstalling, downloading, talking. Finally after about 4 hours of various interactions with Verizon, my iphone is configured properly.

Easy.

That is a beautiful renovation. It isn't your conventional period kind of thing....they keep the dark wood of that amazing curving staircase, which contrasts with the light, modern wood floor. It's fine. They have the dark sliding pocket doors but the rest is white trim. This is my issue with wood. It can be oppressive, but here it gives warmth but the place has a transitional, modern feel.

I feel like I am on HDTV.

Gotta go. Have a good day everyone!!

Re wood, natural wood is beautiful and warm, but I hate feeling overpowered by wood, like I am in some Dickensonian orphanage. Plus a lot of these preservationists and restoration people want the wood despite a century of bad lacquer jobs till it is black. The Philly restoration hits the right balance I think.

It is sort of "outsider-ish" *rob*. It is water-color and the colors are extremely rich. She is a glass artist and loves color and incorporates a lot of Florida images in her stuff. She makes windows and all kinds of glass objects, which are beautiful.
Whenever she sends someone a card, she will paint something. I am also trained in art and one thing is that I have great confidence in trusting my own reactions and instincts. So many people never do anything because they are afraid. She isn't.

"Looking into a new career CGar?"

Scott, for reasons unclear to me, Pepe asked me to come over so he could train me to tend bar and run the place. I've always wanted to learn to tend bar, and it's a fun thing to do for a couple of hours in the late afternoon-early evening when I find myself with some extra time on my hands.

As Biff posted yesterday, Montero's on Monday at 4:30 is usually dead. But, courts are closed today, so there was a party of Family Court lawyers (many of whom I've met before and have been there when we've had Thursday gatherings). By the time I handed the bar over to the night bartender, there were easily 50 people there.
