I drove to PA last night and despite all my snowstorm-related freaking out, the whole thing was a piece of cake. There were little fringes of snow but no problems at all. I flew out there. This morning at 5 am a LONG drive to Middle of Nowhere, PA for some tests for my sister. So far so good.

Tonight I will drive back and meet a friend to hear Andre Schiff at Carnegie Hall.

the delepps can manage through most as long as there is wine and bread.
Large branches down in yard, with tomstones already up the front yard looks very much like a neglected cemetery. The performances begin at 5:30 and going to 9PM.. The theme is Grimm fairytales. 313-321 Clintoton Ave.

If you are in a suit and you are not the 1%, it is a costume. Before the advent of business casual, I would look in the mirror before going to work and think I was in some kind of costume. At minimum, it is a uniform.

I'm dressing up as the 1% tonight. I'll be wearing a suit and sitting at my desk working hard until late.

Power came back on at 5:30 a.m. to the great relief of the Jackal household. Houses take a while to fully cool down. By yesterday evening, ours had quite fully cooled down. The kids were sleeping in double pajamas and winter hats.

Given how cold it's going to be this evening, Biffers, what kind of coat are you wearing? It should be a Chesterfield w/ a fur collar & you should also have a top hat. You can stick the 1% sign in the hatband (like the Disney Mad Hatter.)

Thanks Arkady :-)

Not sure where I can get a top hat and walking stick on short notice, despite the abundance of such items in Brooklyn Heights.

No coat required. I'm warm enough with my suit on. What do you think the best sign would be to wear?

i don't think i want a Mc Rib anymore:

Reportedly the sandwich's ingredients include "a flour-bleaching agent used to make the soles of shoes... and foamed plastics like gym mats." Hungry for more? Mixed in with all of those slivered onions, dill pickles and tangy barbecue sauce, there are roughly 70 other ingredients, with the bun alone containing 34, jam packed with chemicals that we can't pronounce. And then there's the "meat"...

The McRib, at its heart, is, well... heart. The slab of "restructured meat product" consists of salt (980 mg, more than half your recommended daily intake) and pig innards, like tripe, heart, and scalded stomach. And yet, its return continues to excite, every time:

I witnessed some touching momentsa of parenting this weekend.

A father pointing to a puddle and saying to his son, "Don't you want to jump in the puddle?"

A mother with a toddler in a stroller in a subway station, leaning down to caress the boy's face with both hands (and cover his ears) as the train rushes in, five feet away.

"I witnessed some touching momentsa of parenting this weekend.

Must have been a Park Slope parent. And likely laughed and uttered, "Oh Dylan" with a smile as the child kicked cold, dirty water on him/her.

Yesterday, Sound Opinions [I love this show!!!] did its annual Halloween music show and had some interesting choices for non-obvious creepy music. Two of the particularly unusual choices:

I'm Not In Love by 10cc -- eerie vocals and that spooky whispering in the bridge
State Trooper from Springsteen's Nebraska album -- the character in that song is definitely up to something sinister and no one knows yet what it is.

What is truly amazing is that, out of a community of, say, 30-35 people initially drawn together on a real estate blog, I rank well outside the top quartile of OT cat craziness even though I have three cats at home. I mean, what are the odds? (That's my polite way of saying some of you are nuts.) And, no, I will not be joining the cute cat/pumpkin photo upload contest. I also think the contest is or should be limited to photos actually taken by whomever posts it, not uploads of whatever you can find on the web (or are those actually your cats, dibs).

So the Kim Kardashian/Humphries wedding cost how many millions of dollars? I heard the cake alone was something like $20K, and she wore three or four different wedding gowns. And it lasted what, three months?

Good only for the celeb. wedding people who made a pile of money, so I guess a few people in LA did well.

So where's the sanctity of marriage? The family values? Yet some people get all twisted in knots over the thought of a committed gay couple who have been together for 20-some years walking down the aisle.

Cain is front runner by virtue of polls, though I still don't see the path to actual nomination. But he is the story, and certainly the most interesting one at the moment. Perry is the only other non-Romney with the resources to make a run at it. We will see if his $$ and team will enable him to reinvent himself. Settlements like that invariably have confidentiality clauses. Not evidence either way of the strength of the claims. No one is on solid ground to assert from the existence of the claim and the settlements that the alleged events occurred or that they did not. Strong and weak cases settle.

Bxgrl, when a man is accused by a woman of sexual harassment, he is basically defenseless, whether innocent or guilty.
The fact (if it is a fact) that the women accepted a deal, means that they reached a satisfactory outcome. Cain went on with his life. They went on with their lives. It does not mean (by definition) that Cain did anything wrong.
Do innocent people ever settle merit-less lawsuits? ALL THE TIME.

DCB- by which you mean you think they were lying? I can tell you having been in the opposite position, a woman feels totally defenseless when being harassed by a boss or fellow employee because it is always her word against his. Unless you have pictures or emails or witnesses. And the woman loses her job- as did the women who accused him. To say men are utterly defenseless is to forget the other half of the equation.
October 31, 2011 3:36 PM - DeadCatBounce
Every year or so I have to sit through an incredibly boring sexual harassment meeting. Some over paid paid lawyer comes in and lectures. Everyone knows to STFU so they will go away as quickly as possible.
This year they highlighted their points with clips from "The Office".
Here are the unofficial rules of sexual harassment, as I understand them:
1. Any man accused of sexual harassment by a woman is generally cooked, regardless.
2. No man can ever accuse a woman of sexual harassment, no matter what.
3. No man can accuse another man of sexual harassment without being completely ridiculed.
4. No woman can ever accuse another woman of sexual harassment without being ostracized.
5. No company will ever back up an employee accused of sexual harassment unless that employee is the CEO.

If there was a private settlement, then all the parties agreed to let it go. And that is all we should ever know.

"1. Any man accused of sexual harassment by a woman is generally cooked, regardless.
5. No company will ever back up an employee accused of sexual harassment unless that employee is the CEO."

Aren't these two somewhat contradictory?
October 31, 2011 3:46 PM - DeadCatBounce
Bxgrl, was this in a mid-sized to large company? Those rules don't apply to a small business.

Right after I started working full time in the mid 90s, one of the big shots in my department got fired after leaving a string of sexually explicit and vaguely threatening messages on the corporate voice mail of an entry level person two levels under him.

The general consensus from the other male managers was that he got fired "for being stupid"

"1. Any man accused of sexual harassment by a woman is generally cooked, regardless."

October 31, 2011 3:49 PM - DeadCatBounce
"Aren't these two somewhat contradictory?"
Not at all. The CEO generally decides what the company will do. Sometimes that doesn't even help, as in the strange case of Mark Hurd, former CEO of HP. Whatever else can be said, he was cleared by two internal investigations of the sexual harassment charge, he did a great job for HP, and the board fired him.
October 31, 2011 3:49 PM - dibs
And small firm stuff too. No HR departments to speak of.

HR doesn't have your back. that's a myth. HR has the corporation's back. They fire mgrs, exec's, etc cause those were probably situations where it was the best course of action to mitigate exposure to the firm - ie hey, we "dealt" with it and fired the chump

Halloween is crazy this year.
First off there are wall to wall kids all over the place in my neighborhood.
I thought it would ease up this year since it's on a school day, but noooooooooooooo.

We've given out no less than 200 treat bags!
The kids are cute though so I don't mind. But they are very persistent.
Now that it's night time the annoying teenagers are coming out and so all the lights go off and the candy is done.

It was nice walking the neighborhood with the little ones today.
You get to see neighbors you don't see all year and everyone's in a good mood and I got some good pictures.

Almost forgot my annual tribute to horror master Dario Argento, enjoy:

I made the mistake of taking littlelegion to a local "Haunted House" production.
It's put on every year by a theatre group and in the past it's been pretty mild.
This year it seems they got a bit more macabre and the place was going nuts with kids demanding to be let out and screaming.

The theme this year was all about haunted toys and included a "monster" cookie monster with a taste for humans. Ragedy Ann and Ragedy Andy with cleaver. Super Mario after a car accident. Sesame Street meets The Shining.
So you get the idea.

Littlelegion was not amused even though he's usually pretty blase about these sorts of things.
It must have been the noise level which was one step below jet engine with the screams and screeching noises.

My twin and I went to a haunted house in town one Halloween. For some reason, it provoked uncontrollable laughter in us. A werewolf would jump out from behind a wall and we would die laughing and pointing. A series of hands emerged from holes in a narrow corridor, and we grabbed the fingers and wrenched them sideways and heard the college students behind the flimsy walls yelp in pain, and then we'd laugh even harder. A vampire came up to bite my neck and I deliberately spat up on myself (god knows why) and he recoiled in disgust with a look of, WTF?

A friend who was too scared to enter said, when we exited and passed in the parking lot, that he could clearly hear us laughing the entire way.

Too bad you can't put out little mini-40's for the teenagers.
They would love you for it.

jester,
you spit up on yourself?
you guys probably gave those people nightmares!

When I was a kid and lived in an apartment complex the bigger kids would set up a "haunted house" in the abandoned laundromats beneath the apartments. Damn, I can still smell the stale water and mold in those underground hideouts.
Looking back, I don't know what's scarier; the fact that all sorts of kids were hanging out in abandoned basements doing who knows what or the fact that none of the adults knew where the kids were 99% of the time.

...those were different days.

me and matilda. (that really was her name) she was the only dog who let you dress her up in costumes. my dog would have ripped that shit off immediately before the camera flashed.

i know im i shouldnt be talking about kids since i dont have any and it's taboo to give advice, but i think kids NEED autonomy like that sometimes. there's a huge difference between kids doing stuff like that and kids who are totally neglected. am i wrong?

"none of the adults knew where the kids were 99% of the time"

Different times for sure. Once we reached a certain age, we went out with our friends for Halloween, and we'd be gone for hours, all over the neighborhood, and none of the parents had any idea where we were, and weren't the least bit worried. But, I guess those were the days when they didn't have to worry.
October 31, 2011 9:17 PM - Legion
No,
I agree, none of the kids were neglected as far as I knew. Kids were just out doing stuff all day and into the night.
No computers (except Atari or Colecovision), no cellphones, nothing but bikes, other kids and daylight to spend.

There was a lot more danger possible, as I mentioned before, I fell out of a tree twice and took an accidental bat swing to the head, there were fights and wild dogs and crazy girls and boys, but I survived and I don't know if I'd be the same person without my experiences good and bad.

I worry about my kids growing up in a very sterile environment.

It's actually not more dangerous now. Just that crimes against children are publicized so much more.

Legion, if your kid grows up in the city, he will be much more autonomous at a younger age than kids in the suburbs or the country. (If you let him, of course.)

I'm watching John Carpenter's Halloween from 1978.

Timeless horror flick.

...and who doesn't love that music?

if youre actually worried about it, then i think that wont be the case anyway. it's the freaks who raise their kids in urban environments and then bug the fuck out about a little really urban things that are lame and should be worried. it causes stress not only on the kids, but also the parents themselves. if youre SO freaky deaky about your kids living in a sterile environment then put them in one, stop bringing everyone else down. no one's gonna hurt your (not YOU btw) precious little snowflake in your 2 million dollar apartment, and honestly, i think most normal kids dont even like dealing with those kinds of kids anyway, except to steal their lunch money... but then again they all have debit cards in school now anyway i believe.

trust me, there is just as much barfitude at the gentrified kids these days from other kids as there is in the adult world.

legion, just finished watching the original halloween with my roommate and his boyfriend last night, the last 20 minutes... we watched like like 20 minutes of that movie multiple times, total ADHD in this household and we are all in our 30s/40s. that movie is amazing. it was filmed in california tho! i never knew that.

*rob* and rf,
yeah, I've started by putting the kids in public school on purpose,
just like I went to.
it's a good school but would you believe that there a boat load of parents in this neighborhood that just have to put their kids in private school?
ugggh!

Um no not true at all. Kids who grow in the city end up weak and athsmatic with no sense of perspective.

I almost went to private school but then I realized that it was a stupid hippie school (Putney) where no one learns anything so I joined the circus instead. At least there are no hippies in the circus.

Legion, I know plenty of parents of kids the same age as my kid who drive them everywhere. My girl has been taking the subway by herself since she was 11. Much easier now that we have cell phones--the first year I got many calls saying, the sign says I am on the corner of this street and that street, how do I go? Of course now she has GPS in her phone!

hey,
if you guys have a netflix account,
you've got to check out Phantasm from 1979.
I love that film,
it's cheesy enough to be funny with stuff like killer dwarf zombies but scary enough to get you.
And the theme music might be even better than Halloween!

dude, im just throwing it back at the elitists who assume their kids are miles ahead of every other kid just cuz they grew up in NEW YORK FUCKING CITY!!!

they're still raising kids in the outer boroughs. i dont know what to think, but it's funny ha ha and funny nah nah, but at the end of the day, who is getting a better education? i mean how many times can one even visit museums? they aint at the museums, they are fucking paco in mott haven at 2 in the afternoon. it's all relative.

But rob thinking your kid is going to grow up special is what makes the total life compromise worth it. That and lying to your friends back home that you know famous people.

lechacal,
I hear what you're saying,
my early childhood was spent in a "suburban" type setting in Queens where there was access to all sorts of wild spaces, I'm talking real forests, ponds and what not. You could really get lost. And my friends and I often did, coming home with all kinds of wild creatures.
We were downwardly mobile so my parents decided to move to East New York just as the crap hit the fan in NYC so I guess I got a little of both worlds.
It was an interesting ride.
October 31, 2011 9:46 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
my grandmother tells everyone down in south carolina i work in nyc blah blah blah. well okay, that's cool. she deserves it actually. but there people who brag about kids who are totally worthless. im sorta worthless in that im not seeding the sands or anything, but whatev.

You can't teach people to be iconoclasts. That's what they just don't get at places like Putney and Hampshire and Simon's Rock. All they create are little conformists who think they are iconoclasts, which is so much worse than self-aware conformists like me.

This morning the view over the river was the most beautiful I have ever seen it. There were tendrils of fog rising up from the water and forming a low blanket of fog. On the other side of the river the tops of the cliffs were in bright sunlight.

Good to hear the doctor will be able to see you on Wed.
Not likely to be compartment syndrome if that makes you feel better,
you would be in excruciating pain right now.

Gonna walk the dog and admire the lit pumpkins.
