I almost did not post an open thread this morning after what happened yesterday.

I really want there to be a place online where people can discuss whatever they want to and speak what is on their mind, but personally I have no interest in taking part in that discussion if it ends up like yesterday's.

I'm not sure what the best solution is, or if there is one.

One idea would be to set up two threads here every day - one open and one with somewhat strict rules, but I don't think we have the membership or admin staff to really support that.

Any other ides?

Perhaps I'm just being a thin-skinned non-new yorker and need to find another place to hand out on-line.

Maybe one of the rules might be not to allow anyone to post who threatens someone with physical violence. When called out on that threat, they should explain themselves.

Is there anyone here who does not know what Marcellus Shale is all about????

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry
recently issued a labor market report for the state's
Marcellus Shale-producing region (which covers about
2/3 of the state, see map above), here are some
highlights:
1. Employment in Pennsylvania's core shale-related
industries increased by 114% between 2008 Q1 and
2011 Q1.
2. There were 214,000 employees working in
Marcellus Shale related industries during the first
quarter of 2011.
3. Marcellus Shale related industries had a total of
13,504 Pennsylvania establishments in 2011, which
was a 63% increase, and a gain of more than 650
establishments, from 2008.
4. The average wage in the core Marcellus industries
was $76,036, compared to the average wage of $46,222
for all industries in Pennsylvania. The average wage in
the ancillary shale gas industries was $62,581.
5. Total job postings for Marcellus Shale related
industries were 62.3% higher in August 2011 than
August 2010, compared to a 21.3% gain for all industries
in Pennsylvania.
6. In 2011 Q2 there were 2,129 new hires in the
Marcellus Shale related core industries, which was
138.1% higher than 2008 Q2. In 2011 Q2 there were
7. 16,342 new hires in the Marcellus Shale related ancillary
industries, which was 8.6% higher than 2008 Q2. Across
all industries in Pennsylvania, total new hires in 2011Q2
were 8.3% lower than in2008 Q2.
7. The number of Marcellus Shale wells drilled from
January to August 2011 was 37.4% higher than over the
same eight month period in 2010.
8. Five of the six state workforce areas with substantial
Marcellus Shale drilling have experienced
unemployment rate decreases from August 2009 to
August 2011 greater than the average decrease for the
whole state.

This really is quite impressive

I don't want to feel I have responsibility over a place that is such a cesspool of hatred and asshole behavior, especially when arguments get carried over from day to day and are plastered front and center on the home page.

I'm am also tired of the e-mails from people on different sides of the issues telling me what I should do.

I am not going to shut the site down or anything, and am willing to keep things running behind the scenes.

I just don't want to be the person ultimately responsible for the content of the site.

First I will answer the question: I am against physical violence and real, credible threats of violence.

Now I will give my honest opinion on this subject - Dave, you are acting like a major asshole not letting this argument die.
Your behavior is a key reason I do not want to be responsible for setting the standards for this site - I do not think there is any way to "win."

As I have mentioned before, I have been down the road before of setting up a volunteer run community based discussion site only to watch it melt down and stagnate in a sea of flame wares and personal arguments over rules and standards.

I am seeing history repeat itself here.

"that was a major no-no on brownstoner."

Why is this the first time your speaking up about this issue, DIBS? It never seemed to bother you on Brownstoner when What actually threatened violence vs. a vague theoretical threat.

No one on this site condones violence. It's an affront that the poll would even be posted.

Cobble, there was always someone to call out the What's violence on brownstoner. not everyone had to actually do it for it to be recognized. Did I ever support his threats, NO. And yes, since I was the recipient of some of them I responded.

I agree, with DCB. The site is great. If it's going to be nothing but punfests and lovey-dovey talk then what is it really.

Consider me crazy, but I thought yesterday was by far one of the more interesting days on this site. It's futile and pointless to try to censor comments on a blog. You can ban a poster outright if there is a continued pattern of threats of physical violence or libelous statements, but to try to control individual posts is not going to work, nor would I support that.

Let sleeping dogs lie. There are times in life when we need to walk away (no matter how right we think we are) in order to preserve the peace. Whether it is an argument or a physical fight. We all know the point where we need to stop. We know the point were actions or words will result in violence or emotional distress.

BHS, there are some incredible values out there in high quality companies who continue to raise dividends and are currently yielding 3-6%. Those opportunities disappear as the market rises. they have also been very defensive through the selloff. Look at the telecoms. The best are the muni bond funds at 7% federally tax free yields. They are very diversified.

I think that this conversation about threats of physical violence or libelous statements is a smoke screen/distraction from a more central point of a lack of civility and an increase in bullying and anti-social behavior by certain members of this group.

I think that certain negative behaviors are tacitly supported and encouraged or even inflamed by certain members who find it entertaining.

In terms of who should be responsible for setting standards and rules for this site — at the heart of it, we all are, every day we post. Whether we decide to appoint a committee/ruling/governing group or not.

It's my feeling that everyone needs to think seriously about what they want to see this blog be. We are a fairly insular group, we have created an atmosphere where certain posters have walked away. In particular, I'm thinking of Minard, a really lovely smart thoughtful person who was actively engaged after being encouraged to do so, but then due to the negativity, left. I miss him. I'm sure there are others as well who might have posted some, but gave up after some incident or another.

Banning certain posters outright is the only way to control individual posts without having a Ministry of Censorship or full-time site admin. And there are no regular posters here currently whom I feel should be banned.

I do think there are a number of silent people who stop posting or greatly reduce their posting due to negativity.

While I think that there are some posts that should be banned immediately, I agree with Biff that it is not a long term solution for someone who really wants to make trouble.
I also don't think that there are any current members who should be banned.

On a personal level, I just wish we could have engaging discussions that don't descent into name calling and fighting for the sake of fighting.

I have NEV too. That's the only one I own right now. It's a big positn in my IRA. The great thing about it is that they own 189 securities. Individual default risk is essentially zero.

My situation is a bit different than yours as I'm 55 and MUCH closer to actual retirement.

I own no fixed income other than the NEV and 2/15/36 treasuries that I bought in 2006 when they were yielding 5.4%. I'll likely keep them unless I see 30 year at 4.5% with a likelihood that it'll overshoot 5.4% but that's a very remote possibility

Arkady,
Faulkner is one of my favorites,
because of his stylistic genius and philosophical weight.
"...between grief and nothing...I will take grief."

I think you are missing out on an enormous world of experience in eschewing film. :o(
Prior to his Nobel prize in Lit., Faulkner wrote some Hollywood screenplays by the way.

Wow, lots to respond to, so I will start with the most important stuff:

1. Rob, great post. Who would have thought -- Elizabeth Warren and Tyra Banks, separated at birth!!!

2. Don't corral punfests into this. Horse of another color.

3. Thing is, we are not on brownstoner, here. We moved over to keep our community together. We did that because we have become a community and wanted to stick together. We like chatting, discussing, arguing, joking, and (at least some of us) punning together, or we wouldn't be here. And it is a vehicle for self-expression. And even amidst some of the recent hostilities, there have been interesting debates and fun discussions. But the words can get set in stone and blogging magnifies tempers. And there is no real source of infusion of new blood, since (sorry, Scott), no one new is drawn here by content. So we all need to step back and think about when we express or push points to the limit of our community's ability to hold it together. Otherwise, little by little we will lose our community. We could all go off and have our own separate blogs and post exactly what we want, but then we would not be talking to each other. There is a lot of room between "lovey dovey and punfests" and regular outbreaks of hostilities. Let's try to find some middle ground, ground we've tread so much of the time, where we keep it fun, enjoyable and interesting. We have all known each other for so long, we do not need to impress each other by scoring the same points off each other day after day. And, unlike on brownstoner, there really isn't anyone else out there to impress (except what, of course, who we can assume is always lurking).

One more thing to add about Scott: a few days ago I went over to that "other site" to see if Minard was posting over there. LIRR Workers Said to Claim $1 Billion in False Disabilities

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Ten individuals were arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents today as part of a $1 billion scheme to falsely claim employee disability benefits from New York’s Long Island Rail Road, a person familiar with the investigation said.
A long-term fraud probe led by the FBI found that more than $300 million in undeserved benefits were claimed, said the person, who declined to be identified because the matter isn’t public. If all the money claimed had been paid out, losses would have been $1 billion, the person said. The probe was a joint investigation by the FBI, Metropolitan Transit Authority and the office of the Inspector General of the Railroad Board, according to the person.

Yeah, Flannery O'Connor had lupus. I got that mixed up with MS. Two horrible auto immune diseases.

My 2 cents on yesterday. I thought it was disgusting on the whole. It wasn't the issue to me of Dave insisting on an "answer". It was the tone of real rage. And it was pretty much across the board. I don't think the OT should be
censored and the idea of a couple of busybodies deciding if this or that comment was acceptable or politically correct makes me want to barf and if you start doing it, this will go away.

Also, leave Scott the f@#K alone. He isn't Daddy who is going to stop people from being vicious assholes. Monitor yourselves. Grow up. Just read back over yesterday's OT if you have the stomach for it. Everybody has some kind of internal censor. If you can't be borderline civil to other people here because 1) you have gas 2) you are tired 3) you had a fight with someone in your personal life 4) you had a bad day on your job 5) you don't have a job and wish you did............then take a goddamn break.

And no, I don't think an insult justifies physical violence. Thank you very much.

Carry on.

dibs,
Not surprising,
In California, a prison nurse somehow managed to make something like 270K in overtime. Part of the state worker system there. nice.
In New Jersey, it's the accepted practice for municipal employees to "retire" with full blown pension after 20 years, only to be immediately re-hired with a full salary to continue collecting their pension plus full salary and benefits at age 48.

Until we start to realize the scale of fraud, waste and abuse that goes on in our public sector, we will never get the spending under control.

can you define a 'full blown' pension?

And go back to the nurse--- the extra money was for overtime work -- You can't compare OT for that position to someone who gets overtime because can't finish all their work in 8 hours... The nurse works overtime because of staffing level requirements. Much of that overtime is required or drafted of the employee. If you read a bit deeper person worked in area that is very hard to find employees or staff --- If it were easy to find staff they would have hired more employees.
Again - this is not a job where if person worked a little harder and faster the overtime would be cut back.....there had to be someone there and there were not enough people to cover.

Fraud: noun,
deceit, trickery, sharp practice, or breach of confidence, perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage.

Last time I checked, when one "retires" it implies leaving a job after a period of employment. Not signing some papers and walking through a revolving door back into the office and collecting two checks now on the tax payers dime.
The fact that it's a legal loophole only makes it a fraud that's not criminal. The intent however is every bit and in every way fraud.

There is simply no excuse for a nurse getting 270,000 dollars in overtime in a prison.
Same as there is no excuse for a doctor to get 500,000 dollars in some sort of vacation time payment.
There is no excuse because the monies paid out are gained through the tax collections on the private sector which I assure you, does not pay nurses or doctors half a million a year in benefits!

If the California prison system (part of the state employee sector) was more fiscally prudent they wouldn't be 19 BILLION in debt!

They are fiscally imprudent because they don't understand that if they need to go bankrupt paying for prison nurses and doctors, you might have to reconsider how they are being deployed in the prison system.

before you blogicide,
a simple point:
What happens to private sector money is of little concern to me as long as it is not fraudulent. Why? because it does not come at the expense of taxation of my work.
Therein lies the fundamental misunderstanding that one sees all around us these days,
the difference between public sector monies and salaries and private sector expenditures is that one the former are obtained through taxation and are therefore accountable to the people paying: the taxpayer.
I don't care if the private sector uses money to wipe their behinds as long as it wasn't pulled out of my paycheck.

EXACTLY. There are legal means of recourse to fraud in the private sector. The government is accountable to no one when it comes to this (unless you think the election process is). Taxpayers have no recourse to get their money back or sue.

In general there is no financial accountability at any government level. Yet, corporations get fined all the time.

somehow we've gotten away from the basic understanding of how government works.
The people are taxed in order for the government to work for them.
When we find ourselves in a state, like California, where the private sector taxpayers are working just to keep up with demands from the government to fund their public sector doctors and nurses to a level totally incongrous with the going market rate for those services, there is a fundamental breakdown in economic theory. And bankruptcy.

Solution:
Privitaze whatever these prison healthcare needs are. If they cannot be placed under control then deny the service.
This is already done routinely in the private sector as necessary to protect the greater interest of society.

m4l,
I disagree,
a tax shelter stems from tax law,
something which the public, or it's representatives, have voted on and allowed as a matter of course.

Paying a port authority gardener $250,000 in overtime, as has been documented, is fraud and the irresponsible use of taxpayer's money by a government no longer accountable to those that made it.

doesn't seem that funding them so well... if wages the calif. gov't were paying their nurses and doctors were so high they would have enuf personnel and not have to work OT. There is probably tons of OT because the wages are not high enough to compete with private hospitals. I don't know california wages...but I know NYState does not pay nurses anywhere near what they can make in private hospitals.
And - as the article stated -if I remember correctly- the OT were in prisons and psychiatric area -- where even more difficult to recruit personnel. So what I see is supply and demand going on here.

You can do a lot of other damage with Ambien, like go driving around in the middle of the night and forget about it. Buy tons of stuff on line and forget about it. Have sex with strangers and forget about it. Make phone calls in the middle of the night and forget about it. Go out for a 4 am stroll in your pajamas and forget about it. I was reading up on that stuff (no, I never took it) and uninhibited behavior/amnesia has been reported by many users.

pete,
there's tons of OT because nobody has held the state prison system accountable. I imagine their system in California is akin to the public authority system here in NY. We have a couple of hundred Public Authorities in this state charged with managing various sectors. They have little accountability to the public because their funding is directly appropriated from the state budget with very little real oversight.
Budgets are developed every year and the "prison authority" says, yeah, we need another billion dollars because of inflation. meanwhile there's no inflation. But they have to say we need increases because if not, they won't get more money to spend. Meanwhile the state goes back to the taxpayer and says, gee we need some more money from your pocket because we came up short on prison doctors and nurses so pay up.

The real solution as I've stated is for the people to say; you know what, we ain't paying a doctor 500k in vacation benefits because there is nowhere in the private sector that parallels that compensatory model. So it's no, go scratch.
And the Prison Authority says: " I guess the gig is up."

Sad if we've really lost BSM and BHS is cutting back.

Nothing inherently wrong with the way legion posted his comment, benson, but no one has any obligation to be here, either, and I suspect that some folks are reaching a fatigue level with even the within-bounds political discussions. I am certainly wrestling with the contradiction of how much I do like to vent on politics here from time to time [Recall Walker!!! -- oops, sorry, went off message for a sec] with the fact that I am tiring of what often feel like repeats of the same old political discussions. I am not sure what the answer is. My own conception of the OT is that it is an online water cooler. A place for chit chat, some funny, some topical discussion, but when someone digs in with a harangue, it is probably time to return to my desk. I'm torn because I don't think we should be squelching people but I hate losing people to the point where this ceases to be an enjoyable and funcitonal community. The answer isn't to try to convince people to enjoy things they don't.

Gonna say this and duck back out...please bear with me. I'm one of the people who emailed Scott. Wanna know what I said? Here it is unedited:
"I read your post today and I wanted to apologize to you personally. Although I was not a part of what went down yesterday, I do own my role in the overal arguments etc. that go on on the site. I decided yesterday to take a break from the site due to the over the top nastiness that invaded every single post and I fully understand and support your decision to try and distance yourself from having to take any sort of supervisory role in standard setting. It's a thankless job no doubt. Whatever decision you do make, and it is yours to make right now, I support you 100%."
---------------
So, let's not assume that everyone is contacting Scott to lay blame/demand that anyone be banned/lay another complaint at his doorstep.
I'm taking a hiatus because this has gotten too stressful. I have MAJOR stress going on in my real life right now and I don't choose to get in line for more stress, which is what this site feels like to me right now. When I get my poop in a group and real life issues calm down, yeah, I will be back. And everyone here is free to say/do/react/etc however they want. Just don't expect everyone to like it/agree with it/stick around to watch it go down. And yeah, we could all use a group doobie right about now.

benson, re red herring: I am trying to explore this, not fight. You asked what was wrong with legion's comment. My points are (1) nothing and (2) there may be some fatigue with these kinds of discussions. I was trying to explore what meaning bsm's apparent blogacide has for us. She seems to have dropped the OT right after an exchange with legion on that point. I do not mean to single legion out here; lots of us engage in some pretty lengthy discussions of this nature, often daily. They are also the most likely discussions to spill over. I am struggling with the fact that I might agree with you in principle on what limits we ought to have or not on discussions here with the fact that it may mean the slow, or not so slow, dissolution of this community.

The thing about this site is that it is not ALWAYS acrimonious. It is really fun a lot/most of the time. There is a wide range of very smart people with a lot of knowledge and ideas. It is very entertaining. But sometimes people just go overboard. Also there is a way to fight (one extremely valuable lesson of growing up in a large family). You can express yourself...an emotion or an idea very forcefully.....without trying to obliterate the other person. In fact there is nothing better than a good fight -- meaning that it all gets out in the open. Without denigrating the other person or wishing they didn't exist. Some of the shit on this site over the last few days was really twisted.

Snappy, thanks for sharing that. I hope that things calm down on the personal front. First things first.

LOL! gee thanks Obama, you so generous!!! what a total panderance to get votes from young people.

**
The monthly impact of the president's new effort for most Americans paying off college debt will be between $4 and $8

Of the many long-term problems the U.S. economy faces, student loans are a big one. Education costs are rising very quickly and incomes aren't. As a result, students will have to borrow more and more money to obtain university degrees and will have a tougher time paying their loans. President Obama seeks to respond to this question with an executive order in the next part of his "We Can't Wait" unilateral stimulus effort. While the president's heart may be in the right place, his effort isn't like to have much impact.

*******

oh and i read in the wall street journal today (or the times.. one of them) that i wont even qualify for any of the new things.. you dont qualify if you have loans that were taken out before 2008. how f'ing lame.

I looked into the memory issues and could not find anything obvious.
Since the problems came and went, it could have been something like temporary spike in traffic, perhaps cause by something like a search engine scanning the site.

I'll try to keep an eye on it this afternoon.

Keeping older posts around should not have any impact on memory usage - the database where they are stored has tons of room.

Brown Proposes Overhaul of California Pension Programs
Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) --California Governor Jerry Brown unveiled a sweeping package of changes to the biggest U.S. public-employee pensions, including a plan to put most newly hired workers in a hybrid that combines traditional and 401(k)- style coverage.
Brown also proposed raising the age at which most new state workers can retire with full benefits and banning abuses known as “pension spiking” and “double dipping.” He would revamp the make-up of boards overseeing pension funds, bar retroactive benefit increases and disallow workers from “buying” credit for additional years of service to boost retirement payments.

I'm caught up now.

Personally, I come to the OT to chat and joke with my friends, Motley Crue that they are (and I refer you to my avatar for a recent group pic > > > ), have some fun, often learn something new, and, at times, take refuge from the real world. I consider myself very fortunate to have made a great group of close friends here, whom I will have with or without the OT.

That said, I would hate to see the OT implode. But, I agree with those who have said that we don’t need rules and censorship (except in the case of personal deets being revealed). I also don’t think the occasional melee is so terrible. As a group, we have survived dust-ups before – far worse than yesterday – and I am confident that we will again.

I can count on less than one hand the number of times I have truly been offended by something said in the OT, and, in retrospect, those times were the result of my mood rather than any malicious intent on the part of the poster. So, I got over it. FWIW, what works for me, as I have suggested to many people on countless occasions:

1. Keep things in perspective.

2. Don’t take anything said in the OT personally

3. Don’t take anything said in the OT too seriously.

4. Walk away from an argument without needing to have the last word (even when you know you’re right).

5. Skip posts when there’s a discussion you don’t like.

6. Ignore posters whom you don’t like.

7. Step away from the keyboard, and take a break every now and then.

And, again, let me add my thanks to you, Scott.

Funny story. Snappy and I had an impromptu dinner last night. Alcohol was involved. We were talking on the sidewalk, and it's entirely possible that I took the names of several PLUSAs in vain. Standing nearby, a woman was walking her dog. When I mentioned said PLUSAs, the woman's head practically snapped off her neck as she turned to look at us. No one we know (though she did have long blonde hair come to think of it ...). Snappy and I both concluded that she had to be a Brownstoner poster given how fast her head spun around.

BlankSlate Adds DC Blog “Prince of Petworth” to Growing Customer List

by BlankSlate on 10/25/11

BlankSlate announced today at the Street Fight Summit in NYC that is has signed Prince of Petworth to its customer list. Prince of Petworth is a blog that has grown to one of DC’s largest. BlankSlate will add its real estate listings marketplace, classifieds, business directory, community calendar, and community forum products to Prince of Petworth turning it from a WordPress blog to a complete local site for the DC area. BlankSlate will also handle ad sales, bringing Prince of Petworth in to BlankSlate’s ad network.

BlankSlate’s local technology and sales solution was launched in April 2011 when it signed its first customer, the leading Brooklyn blog Brownstoner. Brownstoner was launched more than seven years ago, and generates more traffic than all of Brooklyn’s local newspapers combined. BlankSlate has grown Brownstoner’s advertiser count to more than 400, with solutions for advertisers starting at only $24.95 per month.

Says BlankSlate’s CEO and Founder Kael Goodman: “We’re thrilled at how well Brownstoner has done and we’re sure Prince of Petworth will do just as well. We think our approach of providing the technology and ad sales allows bloggers to do what they love – write and engage with people in the community. We’ll be announcing additional customers soon too.”

Says Dan Silverman, Prince of Petworth’s publisher: “I’m super excited to be working with Blankslate. I’ve already transitioned my advertisers and am looking forward to the site’s new capabilities with the November re-launch. What started as a hobby five years ago has exceeded all expectations – I can’t wait to see where the next five years takes it with Blankslate as a partner.

Brownstoner – Expanding A Successful Web Business On BlankSlate
by Kael Goodman on 5/24/10
Share |

In a couple of weeks we’ll be launching a real estate listings marketplace for the site Brownstoner that is built on BlankSlate.

We’ve been working with Brownstoner since last fall and that’s given us the opportunity to learn a few things about its audience. First, there is a really personal conversation going on with the readers, some of whom are famously vocal on the site. It’s an unmistakably Brooklyn conversation and people in Brooklyn love it. That’s why the site gets more than 1.5 million pageviews per month. Second, people come to the site looking for all kinds of information about real estate — and one of those things is listings.

Using BlankSlate we are able to make a custom real estate listings application in just a few weeks.

Glad you liked it Arkady! They are doing a 4 part series. That was part 1
Part 2 is more concerned with finance:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-25/bias-blindness-and-how-we-truly-think-part-2-daniel-kahneman.html

Part 3 is about the influence of anchoring and reference points on perceptions of fairness (maybe a lesson for politicians in this one):

Want to Be the 1%? There's an App for That

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be the 1 percent — one of the wealthiest people in America — it’s your lucky day! There's an app for that. Which means you can be the 1% anywhere — in the airport or in the tub.

Spur of the Moment Games is about to launch their debut mobile app called, “Clear the Park,” where you get to play the role of an executive who “clears the park” of protesters by throwing things at them from your office or luring them away with prizes like Radiohead tickets, Ben & Jerry’s coupons — or a sandwich. If you win, you get that gorgeous park view back for when you’re kicking back in the corner office. If the protesters win, they may turn your office into a Ben & Jerry’s or something — Sorry, I meant a Ken & Gerri’s.

I've had a Suzi Homemaker kind of day.

I made the bed (which I do pretty much everyday). Called Verizon to tell them to fix something. Ordered a new custom lamp shade for BH's bedside table. Had a friend over for tea. Did three loads of laundry — washed, dried and folded — I even remembered to pull out the stuff that's not supposed to go in the dryer. I unwrapped several pictures. Took out the trash and recycling. And cooked a large Chicken Pot Pie from scratch.

It's time for my glass of wine now.

totally scary. at least it's not THAT much and at least i have a job. so im thankful for that. i do remember the promissary note meetings in college (just sign your name on the line!!!!) im serious when i say there was no mention of how taking out loans could be a bad idea. i mean yeah i was an adult, but still. it still felt like free candy to me and a gazillion other low income types (i always signed my notes in some meeting with low income peeps cuz i was in some program for low income students). im not sure how other people did their loan signing. i dont even remember if it was an every semester thing or just once a year or just once? there were all kinds of weird meetings. one (i shit you not) was basically how to deal with white people hahahaha.

my private loan WAS wiped out and they stopped pestering me 2008 or so... then in 2009 i did all this detective work cuz i was afraid of it getting bigger thinking i still HAD to pay it. it switched hands a few times. rutgers send it to some place and then they sent it back to rutgers and then they sent to University account Services (some random company who i pay now).. i would have been scotch free if i didnt go noseying around. however, obama signed it into action when he was elected (maybe it was bush actually?) that you cant even get rid of private loans i.e. non direct loans?)... i mean there's all KINDS of private loans, but i think this one was a subsidized perkins loans directly from my school.
the WSJ or times today had an article about obamas plan to have people consolidate and save them money but it's only for people who dont have loans prior to 2008. doesnt look like id save much anyway, according to something i read on the internet today it works out to average of like 10 bux a month!

I'd like to rebel against this change myself*. Unfortunately, there is no one to complain to that would care!! LOL!

*Actually, I'm adjusting as best I can. But it's been a shock to the system. My system, to be specific. Not my first choice. On the upside, the apt. is turning out great, and my neighbors are lovely. newsflash: the rich dont wanna subsidize the middle class and the middle class are sick and tired of supporting the poor. people are tired of subsidizing other people in various shapes and forms. the home ownership tax credit, the baby credits, way down to things like food stamps and section 8. some people are just sick of it. hello, it's Earth. why cant people just die off that cant fend for themselves? every other damn species on this planet does that... it's not like the constant state of subsidy has made us EVOLVE as humans, in fact it's made us devolve (if that's a word)

Legion it's better to spend the money if it's there. A lot of times schools will get X amount of $$$ to spend before a certain date and they'll lose it if they don't spend it. It's a really stupid system but you have to take advantage of it if the money comes to your kid's school. I remember our principal sent out a message that was basically like "AHHHHHHH we have to spend this money allocated for technology in the next two days or we lose it all!!!!!" so we got together and bought a bunch of TVs, computers, LCD projectors, etc. Several thousand taxpayer $$$ saved from the bureaucrats!

the other city ive been wanting to visit for a long time is detroit. but then curbed added a curbed:detroit (they have them for all the major cities now) and i was like holy fucking shit, it is MOONFACE MECCA. POOR MOONFACE MECCA which is even grosser cuz the only good thing moonfaces have is $$$. Curbed:detroit completely ruined it for me.

Probably the abandoned lots being turned into farms would ruin it for you too.

How about Boston?

I can change back - going to tool...but trying to figure out what am I inadvertently doing on the touchpad or whatever it is that is changing it. sometimes too really teeny and sometimes really big.

Just walk around trenton, nj --- not much chance of moonface there.

Yeah *rob* it's a loooooooot of talk and there's always someone with some crazy idea that has to be heard.
And there are always people who have been in some obscure position of power in the community that they don't want to give up. They should really serve food at all these meetings though. How much planning would it take to order a 3 foot hero?

sixyears,
The PTA meeting was yesterday.
Today was a budget meeting with the local councilman who is opening up the spending process to the community.
Apparently they do this all over the world.
My cynical New Yorker side is wondering if the politicians are just trying to make the community look dumb by telling them to spend some money and then deal with the rest of the community when they don't like the results.

lifeinbkln and comm board meetings,,, you really need to develop some real hobbies. Otherwise people will start feeling sorry for you.

....there was a teacher there who suggested spending money on technology for one of the schools.
They say the process will take about 5 months of meetings!

I had an embarrassing moment on the metro north this morning. I pulled out my iPhone to check the Internet for something and when I opened the browser it had porn on it still. Whoops. And then I had to hide it from the woman in the seat next to me while I tried to exit out really quickly.

love Led Zepplin.
I think the OT needs to hang out listening to led zepplin in a large room with black light posters and a bar with
about 15 taps of beer.

you watch porn on your iphone!? :-/ isnt that like thinking a pencil sharperner is a glory hole? sorry maybe that makes no sense. i never see people watching porn on the train, on the ipads and stuff. i do see them watching full length movies, which i dont know... i find rather lame and sad for some reason. i dont think movies are meant to be watched alone. especially on the train. i think im just old school, i use it just to read, and i need it to be a physical book cuz i like the physicality of it and folding up the books themselves. if it's a long trip or one that isnt a commute, ill listen to music tho. otherwise i need it as my book reading time.

that sounds like the next generic reincarnation of a moonface bar. screw the bar, screw the tips, screw the patrons. that shit is best left done at home.

can I ask a seemingly dumb question about xbox?
I picked up a used xbox at a garage sale this weekend but I think I'm missing a part.
Is it supposed to have a remote?
Do you just plug it in and change the tv setting to video 2 and shove the game in?

YeH rob, the iPhone is actually pretty useful for porn watching, although the screen is small. Best if you're in a wifi hotspot though, otherwise the videos keep stalling.

Actually I guess the small screen is helpful if you're trying to be slick and not have other people see your porn. Headphones too.

yeah you dont need the remote. that's only used if you wanna use it as a dvd player. pointless these days. i think i actually have an extra xbox remote tho if you want it. funny, i have off tomorrow and doing a mad cleaning and was then gonna set up the original xbox!!!

mod the xbox (look it up) super super super easy and you can download every single old school video game and play it from the xbox harddrive on your tv!!! i prefer using the original consoles, but the xbox is an old school video gamers paradise.
