One graphic idea for the banner
July 31, 2011 1:44 PM - bxgrl
Playing around with this idea and working on several others, I do love the site colors that BHS uses and I like the overall site design- it's very clean and not fussy. That said, there aer some other things I'd like to see on the site, visually but everything is subject to everyone's input. So have a look and we go from there.

Your neighbors at the Brooklyn Open Thread applaud your creative flair.

Really great, bxgrl!

i like it a lot, but i wish you could leave the text out. one of the things i HATED about the original brownster was that banner. brownstoner 2.0 had a slightly less obtrusive banner. i dont know, im just not a fan of banners cuz it's embarrassing when people see it if they see your computer screen. i dont want people thinking i live in brooklyn cuz i have a choice. i sorta am embarrassed that i have to live here. that's why i get so nasty when people celebrate it so much.

I don't know what to say, rob. The idea behind banners is to establish an identity for your site. I could conceivably leave out the text, or make it smaller and in a sans serif font. But I'd like input from everyone.

Thanks for the compliments, guys!

I left a message on the ot. Teasing about the spooky feel.....I like it bxgrl. Thanks for working on it and not sure who did the donate button but it works! Thank you!!!!!
July 31, 2011 2:10 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
no, it's definitely good. i agree with what you say, i just dont like nosies knowing what sites im on is all.

July 31, 2011 2:36 PM - WonTon
I love everything but the typeface...maybe you should go sans-serif to contrast with the mainly old-skool photos for a soupcon of modernista vibe.
July 31, 2011 2:39 PM - bxgrl
WonTon- I was thinking that too- maybe Futura or something in the Helvetica family. I'll look through my literally 1000 typefont files.

OY. (must resist deleting Rob's post....) Speaking for myself, I don't harbor Mr. B any ill-will. I wish him well, despite some hurt feelings that he didn't speak to us first before going for the Nuclear Option. I think it's fine and good that we link to Brownstoner, as he gave us a place to meet, get to know one another and form a wonderful, if wacky and somewhat unusual community. I posted there for 4 or so years (I thought was 3, but my math was off) and I loved it. I loved reading the What and his medicated and un-medicated posts. I loved reading about Brooklyn, real estate and otherwise.

The OT is dead. Long live the PLUSAs and the OT. (And Brooklyn Open Thread, too, I might add.)

why would you delete my post? what exactly did i say that was so bad? jeez. and i wish the word "plusa" was filtered. i cringe everytime i hear or see that word. you all remind me of a suburban cheerleading team or a moonface sorority/frat sometimes.

Cobble, sweetheart, we thank you. (Mr. Collins barks twice in approval)
July 31, 2011 3:55 PM - dibs
Ummmm, the spelling of "BKLYN" doesn't match the blog site name
July 31, 2011 4:38 PM - bxgrl
Yes- I know, dibs. I want to check with Scott to see if we can fix the name. Most people would spell it Bklyn but he may have had to use that spelling for a reason.
July 31, 2011 6:11 PM - Arkady
I hope he can deal w/ the "L" - I type it every time even though I'm trying not to.
Nice job, bxgrl! Can you fit some reference to the bridge in somewhere? (I haven't a clue where but I like the bridge.)
July 31, 2011 7:12 PM - bxgrl
You gave me a great idea, Arkady :)

On the other group blog I post at (it's also set up on Drupal) the site admin has created a rotating photo banner--every time you enter the site (or refresh the page) you get a different scenic view. The pictures rotate randomly from a pool of maybe 30 or 40 different shots. It's really pretty cool and I wonder if we could do that here.

I would like to see a Fedders home included in the montage.

FEDDERZ?!??! bite your tongue. how dare homes be affordable in this city, Benson.

Really nice idea, Wonton.

I'm sure we can- it takes time and I have to play in drupal more. It's a nice idea -I'd need a bunch of pictures, and the time to size them and clean them up for the header. Maybe down the road, after we get more set up.
July 31, 2011 11:34 PM - bxgrl
I'll have to do a Robert Moses montage for you, benson.

Regarding the site name, it can be changed to any domain that is free to be registered, and the existing name can be set to automatically redirect.
Personally, I always liked bkln better than bklyn, but that is purely due to my own taste.

My only comment on the site banner is that I would move the text to the side or over the image rather than under the image.
It seems that the trend for banners for the last several years has been to make them less vertical, so more space is available for the actual site content.

I will set up a test site so that we can test new ideas without breaking the main site, but it might be the weekend before I have time.

I'll try that BHS. I think bkln is problematic only because Bklyn is the usual spelling and if someone is googling the site, they would most likely use bklyn, not bkln. But it isn't a big deal.

Thanks, cobble help would be good. I think its more a matter of finding photos that are interesting and look good, as well as legal for us to use. So if you have pictures you think would be nice, send them to me. I know denton and wasder both have fabulous ones and I am working on a banner that would use those, on another page. Not sure I would want a rotating banner for the home page- at least not until we are further along and more people know about us.
August 1, 2011 5:39 PM - denton
Hey bxgirl thanks for working on that but in a way I agree with benson, let's have some of the 'new' brooklyn showing instead of all 'brownstony' things. A shot of that On Prospect Park (I think that's the name), that glass building, would be a great contrast. I think I have some if needed.
August 2, 2011 9:22 AM - More4Less
bxgrl, believe someone else has the "lifeinbklyn" (with the "y"). I think I saw that when I googled it the day scott put up this site
