Site Status at 1 day old

Wow, I was not expecting everyone to jump over here so quickly, but all is good.

To reiterate what I said yesterday, I do not want this to be BoerumHillScott's site, I want this to be a site for the community.
From a legal/technical perspective, I am personally the owner of the site, but I have already shared administrative and editorial power with others.

There were a lot of out of memory errors yesterday caused by a lack of resources on my hosting service. As of last night, I have upgraded to double the memory.
The incremental cost of this to me is $12.60 a month. I am willing to eat this cost, but I am also happy for assistance from others.
I have signed up for a Google Advertising account that will take a week or so to set up, and my intention is to run basic adds on the site to help defer some of the expenses.
By some strange miracle if more money is taken in than currently required, any excess will be put back into the site.

I will be making some adjustments to the site based on feedback in the next few days, but I welcome others with web design experience (or a desire to learn) to step in as well.

For those interested in the more technical aspects of the site:
The software for the site is Drupal 7, currently running no 3rd party extensions.

The site is running on a virtual private server provided by VPSLink and registered in my real name. A couple of other websites I run are on the same server. The hosting costs for the next 12 months have been paid for by myself.
No one except myself has access to the hosting account.

The domain name is registered in my real name, and has been paid for the next 2 years.

If at any point in the future I decide that I am unwilling or unable to continue to the be the site owner, I promise to turn everything over to someone that is willing.

Thanks again, and now it's time to go back to my job of family tour guide.

BHS, the site is great. Couple of suggestions on the monetizing side. I've found that Google Ads really pays a pittance, if that. Maybe think about putting up a PayPal "Donate" button, so it's easy for us to toss the blog fund a $5 or a $10 now and then. We could also use that method to fund special PLUSA projects when needed.

GM, BHS thank you again for this. It's really fantastic.

I like the idea Wonton mentioned. It could be good to have a LifeInBklyn fund. Raises lots of questions, though. Non-profit, for profit. May need a Forum thread/discussion.

(Wonton, Did you pick that avatar just to taunt DIBS?! Naughty, naughty!)

Scott, Thanks so much for doing the work to get this site in action. It is really wonderful-- you are the
best. Also I am happy to kick in for the cost. It will be fun to see how the site develops; so far, it
seems, we have the best of Brownstoner and it can only get better. Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Thanks again very much, Scott. Agree with many others that I am happy to contribute to the site's costs. I think WonTon's PayPal account is a good idea. As is putting money back into the site, particularly since our goal is to create a real Brooklyn website, and not just an OT for us to play in. From a legal perspective, there are enough lawyers here who can contribute pro bono services, and I suspect setting up an LLC may be the way for us to go eventually. I also agree with you that this will be our community website, to which everyone who is interested can contribute content, ideas, etc.

PS, cobble, ironic, isn't it, that we'll now really be collecting PLUSA dues?! Can the manuals be far behind?
July 30, 2011 11:13 AM - cobblehiller
LOL! And PLUSA t-shirts and caps!
July 30, 2011 11:15 AM - CGar
God knows our t-shirts and caps will be much nicer than the other t-shirts, particularly with our in-house graphic designer.

In his first post, Scott said he thinks the domain name is "terrible". I don't think it's terrible, but I think it would be great if we collectively came up with a really good blog name, again, particularly since we plan to turn this into a real Brooklyn site. I told bxgrl we should throw it open for discussion in Monday's OT.

Agreed. LifeInBrooklyn really isn't bad, but I'm open to other ideas, for sure.

I'd just like us to redo (or request bxgrl's fab input) the graphic "look and feel" a bit. And make a page for your Suess piece.
