The Brooklyn Anthropologist (#1 in an occasional series)
July 31, 2011 3:00 PM - Open Thread - WonTon
Okay, so as many of you know, I split my year between Park Slope and Asia, which keeps me in a permanent state of culture shock--and I like it that way. Because it helps me notice the strange, sometimes annoying, and often wonderful behavioral patterns of Slope denizens, that might otherwise pass by unnoticed.

Like the Sad Abandoned Books of Park Slope ^^

This is the fourth or fifth tableau I've seen like this in the last two weeks. Nobody in Park Slope, it seems, can bear to throw away a book. We leave them, like foundlings, piled on doorsteps, balanced against wrought iron fences, even propped on top of walls. They stare at you as you pass by, begging like lost puppies for a new home.

And they say that print is dead! Maybe it is. Maybe these are the blanched corpses left to rot after the UPS man delivers the new Kindle or iPad.

I wonder why so many people in Park Slope seem so conflicted about destroying their books. Is it liberal guilt? Or a passive aggressive wish to spread bedbugs to literate strangers?

An informant of mine tells me that the Brooklyn Public Library has changed their donation policy and is only gonna take used books once a year, in October. Maybe that, more than anything else explains the strange proliferation of well-thumbed foundlings in the neighborhood.

What do you do with your old books? Do you ever just toss them in the trash?

One graphic idea for the banner

Playing around with this idea and working on several others, I do love the site colors that BHS uses and I like the overall site design- it's very clean and not fussy. That said, there aer some other things I'd like to see on the site, visually but everything is subject to everyone's input. So have a look and we go from there.

New Page and forum

There is a new forum page for ideas and requests we'd like to see built into the site. Please take a look.

Site Building
July 31, 2011 12:17 PM - About LifeinBklyn - bxgrl
Got ideas? Post them here! Seriously- let's figure out what LifeinBkln is about. Do we want other sections- like a DIY forum? Events? Slice of BK Life articles? Neighborhoods? We've got a great opportunity here- let's make the most of it. we are one eccentric, feisty, bright and funny group of people. We are open and welcoming OK- so sometimes we are foul-mouthed, antsy and dorkish- no one's perfect. But we are about loving Brooklyn, and cats ;-)

Site Status at 1 day old
July 30, 2011 7:36 AM - Open Thread - BoerumHillScott
Wow, I was not expecting everyone to jump over here so quickly, but all is good.

To reiterate what I said yesterday, I do not want this to be BoerumHillScott's site, I want this to be a site for the community.
From a legal/technical perspective, I am personally the owner of the site, but I have already shared administrative and editorial power with others.

There were a lot of out of memory errors yesterday caused by a lack of resources on my hosting service. As of last night, I have upgraded to double the memory.
The incremental cost of this to me is $12.60 a month. I am willing to eat this cost, but I am also happy for assistance from others.
I have signed up for a Google Advertising account that will take a week or so to set up, and my intention is to run basic adds on the site to help defer some of the expenses.
By some strange miracle if more money is taken in than currently required, any excess will be put back into the site.

I will be making some adjustments to the site based on feedback in the next few days, but I welcome others with web design experience (or a desire to learn) to step in as well.

For those interested in the more technical aspects of the site:
The software for the site is Drupal 7, currently running no 3rd party extensions.

The site is running on a virtual private server provided by VPSLink and registered in my real name. A couple of other websites I run are on the same server. The hosting costs for the next 12 months have been paid for by myself.
No one except myself has access to the hosting account.

The domain name is registered in my real name, and has been paid for the next 2 years.

If at any point in the future I decide that I am unwilling or unable to continue to the be the site owner, I promise to turn everything over to someone that is willing.

Thanks again, and now it's time to go back to my job of family tour guide.
