Could it be...I'd think that was someone I knew passed out at someone I knew's pool in Park Slope. But I can't be sure, since I wasn't there. : P

It was impromptu, *rob*. We were planning to ride the B63 all day and pick up strangers for dave, but that bus was taken out of service after someone took it for a joyride on Saturday.

Besides, I caught at least 3 infectious diseases last time someone made me ride the B63. Plus which, the damn bus kept stopping to pick people up.

M4L, sorry you are sick and I suspected a few Irish genes in there. The roof is fixed, but I plan for a new roof next
spring. Traveler's is overwhelmed. They have assigned the rain last weekend to the "Catastrophe group". They were
overwhelmed with claims so they start calling field inspectors from other parts of the country. My guy is from the deep
South, so I need to wait for him to assess damage (not too bad) but need to do something for tenant this week, regardless of when they get here. I guess I will just take pictures and get it done while she is traveling. I am leaving
Thurs and Fri so have to do today. I went to church last night at St. Charles Borremeo in Brooklyn Heights. They have a
grammar school, high school affiliated and a big old church and rectory. The pastor said that their new construction on the high school was devastated by that rain total damage to everything 800,000?!?! I wondered if I heard him correctly.

Went to Basil yesterday for the first time. Loved the food/ But why do parents insist on opening up the double wide baby carriage inside the damn tiny place when they leave? Is it too much trouble to make your 4 year old twins walk to the door and open it outside? They had to move the row of tables aside (including ours, while we were eating).

BTW MM, were you commenting on my ehubby's legs? They aren't "white." They have a...er...ah... a glow.
August 22, 2011 1:06 PM - minard lafever
The NY Post has a story that the DA has some "bombshells" in connection with the DSK accuser. But nothing has come out yet. Evidently she lied once before about being raped. Disaster for the DA.

And why are 4 year olds in a stroller????
August 22, 2011 1:15 PM - bxgrl
Probably all three, dibs. If you've been to Basil, you know how narrow it is. Our table was maybe 30" from the chairs at the bar. The aisles are closer than FDNY regulations. The baby carriage was a side by side, for twins. We ahd to stop, slide the table out of the way, while making sure nothing spilled.
August 22, 2011 1:16 PM - bxgrl
They might have been 3- but old enough to walk under their own power. Definitely no longer toddlers.

BTW, cobble- I owe you big time :) We will discuss.
August 22, 2011 1:17 PM - dibs
Ridiculous. And the staff should have told them to take it outside.
August 22, 2011 1:17 PM - Donatella
The DA's office apparantly spent weeks trying to unravel a series of lies she made about the case.
In the past, she fabricated a gang rape by army to get admission to US as a political refugee.
i read someone opining that the DA is actually afraid of being witnesses against her in a criminal case to be possibly brought by DSK and that she has some kind of document outlining her own plans for a DSK payout on her
rape case. Who knows?

Regarding DSK case, sounds like the rumors surrounding this woman are flying fast and furious. I am always dubious about what "they" say, as they are making her out to be the most conniving and well planned gold digger extortionist on the planet, which I do not believe for a minute. I suspect the truth lies in the middle, and we will never know, as neither side will ever tell the whole truth, as it benefits neither of them to do so.

1. I need to pee, should I get up now?
2. I smell coffee, should I go get some or wait for BH to bring me some?
3. If I get up there will be things for me to do, email to answer, phone calls to make. Better just to lay here.
4. What will I eat for breakfast, if I get up? Cereal or a bran muffin. Are there any bananas left?
5. What will I wear today? Is anything clean? What about those pants? Do I need a sweater?
6. When I take a shower, should I wash my hair, too? When did I last wash my hair?

It's EXHAUSTING!! ; )

"he said, she said" cases are very difficult to deal with which is why I think the DA has mud on his face on this one. He thought this was a good political case perhaps, poor oppressed accuser versus hot-shot Frenchman. The trouble is without evidence and without a scratch on either one of them the case was poor from the beginning. I honestly don't know why they felt so sure they could prosecute this successfully. They are on a losing streak.

August 22, 2011 1:44 PM - bxgrl
Not the only thing What doesn't have, dibs :)
August 22, 2011 1:47 PM - Donatella
Well there is evidence and there are scratches. It boils down to what's behind them and it ultimately
does come down to he said, she said to some degree. That is why the way she rolled out the un-facts,
then the facts over the course of 2 weeks is devastating. She may very well have been badly bullied in
there but in the end, the perception of her veracity is everything.

Worse for our justice system is that it gets tried in the media first. I wonder how much it affects the DA's intentions in trying the case, what with all the furor in the press? Truth is such an elusive thing- somethings I think our system os all about dueling realities, not truth or untruth.

The DA may be seen as a blunderer, but he had to decide whether to press charges before DSK got onto that plane to France, never to return. Considering that the day of the alleged assault was the day of his departure, there wasn't much time to find out all the facts.

OK, Mr. What -- I hear you on the $1.2T under the table loan from the Fed to banks, some of them not even US Banks.
Clearly a line was crossed.
But the banks have been repaying, and with interest. So this is a political issue, not a financial crisis.

August 22, 2011 2:01 PM - Slopefarm
I haven't heard anything that says whether Diallo's statements alleging criminal conduct by DSK ar themselves made up. The false statements that have become known to date undermine her credibility as a complaining witness to the point where there might not be a triable case, but it does not render the accusation false. They may be false, true, partly true, partly true but exaggerated, etc. And we may never know. If criminal charges are dropped, DSK takes a risk putting all this stuff at issue in a civil action, whether against her or against DA's office for malicious prosecution, etc. DSK certainly doesn't need money. His best bet would be to walk away and not look back if charges are dropped. He's prolly too arrogant to do that, though.
August 22, 2011 2:02 PM - bxgrl

DIBS, the $1.3 Trillion was above and way beyond TARP, which was public info. This latest revelation required an act of congress to see the light of day.
The American people are truly asleep if this does not become a central issue in the near future.
August 22, 2011 2:06 PM - Slopefarm
Dibs -- if that's true (I can't remember) then counterclaims by DSK make sense.
August 22, 2011 2:06 PM - bxgrl
Makes one wonder about the viability of the justice system- if they won't even make the effort to find out what did happen. right now it seems to me her credibility is more of an issue than the fact she may have been raped. And I find that very troubling. especially in light of other accusations against him in France.
August 22, 2011 2:06 PM - DeadCatBounce

...alright,
I know many people here hate it when I say "I told you so",
but since I'm always defending all sorts of unpopular positions I have to take the time to gloat from time to time.
In this case Silver again.
Now don't get me wrong, I love Gold (I read that newsletter you recommended on Gold dibs), and of course I have a position in Gold as well but Silver is at 43.53 today, up from about $35 per ounce when I said "It will go up again" despite the unprecedented attempts to break the back of small investors with a series of 5 margin requirement adjustments.
(donatella, I read your analysis of course and I understood that it was part of the commodities trading mechanism to avoid over speculation)
nonetheless, the small investor is talking here and Silver is currency and always has been.

Question now is, with all the talk of another round of quantatative easing, will it continue to rise further?

Nixon's indescretions were not quaint by any historical standard. If we leave out the fact that he escalated the
Vietnam War resulting in the meaningless deaths of so many American soldiers for no other reason than to appear Presidential before the 73 election, he is also the person who made expanding the money supply POSSIBLE by de-linking the dollar to gold. He ELIMINATED the gold standard making all of this 'treasonous" money supply possible. Not that I think that that was a bad thing. And he eliminated it for the exact reasons we are using quantitative easing now.

donatella,

Those were policy decisions and all President's are judged by them.
Nixon was of the mind that the Communist Chinese had to be stopped. I don't think that we can say that he escalated the war just for political purposes any more than we can say that LBJ escalated the same war for the same reasons a decade before. It's fair enough to judge his decision making knowing what we know now though.

I don't know enough about his reasoning behind finally getting the dollar off the gold standard, I know that the process was started by FDR however.

I'm talking about real scandals and cover-ups.
We have to give Nixon credit though for realizing that he had to step down and he did.

Legion, you are right about Johnson. It was earlier in the game and Johnson inherited Kennedy's
involvement and tried to escalate it. It was a disaster and he covered up the extent of the disaster and
the outrage of his deception led to his decision to not to run again. The democratic party was badly split
at that time over Vietnam. But Nixon knew exactly what he was doing in the escalation of the war. It was
cynical because it was clear we didn't have a chance there and he knew it. He was trying to keep it going
to appear Presidential escalating the war just prior to the election. Nixon was smart, smart, smart ala cunning smart. He was masterful in opening up relations with the Chinese. But not for a moment do I think he was one of the domino
theory people. That was so Kennedy era.

DIBS, I know there is a tankard, a few bowls, a pitcher, and some plates, maybe some other stuff. (And then same in silver, silverware, etc.) But I haven't actually looked at the stuff in many years. It's just packed up in boxes in a basement for now. One of these days the short people's handler and I will have to actually pull it out, look at it and divvy it up. For years, most of it was in boxes, it was only when my father died that we *looked* in the boxes, and basically just packed it back up and stored it. I know some of it is Revere. Dona's right about Nixon and the bombing. My gloss on Johnson is that he escalated in part because he was afraid to withdraw the troops and "lose" the war, which he thought would be devastating politically. So his decisions were also partly polictically motivated though not animated by the same degree of cynicism. I'm not sure anyone was animated by the same degree of cynicism as Nixon. He had enemies lists, Jew counters (Fred Malek), slush funds, all kinds of break-ins and dirty tricks, etc.

Johnson was also out of touch - he was virtually wrapped in cotton wool by his handlers & had no idea how much the country was against him until the demonstrations grew to massive proportions. He was devastated to learn how unpopular he'd become & it was part of his reason for not standing for re-election.

It doesn't take rocket science to have a blog. They are free, and available to anyone with an email address. When I decide to do one, I'm not going to waste my time "shutting you up", What. You give yourself too much credit and importance. Go sit on your empty beach and watch the waves come in, or build sand castles, or something.

I don't know, Legion. Nor do I know anything about the timing of those elections. I thought they were postponed to allow him to run. Not sure.

He is doing fine, Donatella, thanks for asking. We saw the surgeon who did his hip replacement last week and he said my dad is good as new, well, new for a 60-year-old, which is pretty good considering that he is 88.

He is frailer and more forgetful every year. And my stepmother is definitely losing her marbles which makes him crazy. I am taking over paperwork for them. It's not exactly my strong point, but he really can't manage. My stepmother did it all until about 5 years ago, but she's completely lost now.

reading more about the developments in the DKS case, I think Cyrus Vance is going to have to step down.
It is the perfect disaster for his benighted office.
If I were an official of the French Government I would not set foot in NYC unless he was gone. He pulled the man off the jet as if he were some lifetime offender, or lowlife. He is a French dignitary and government official. He was put in handcuffs and paraded like a lowlife criminal because a chamber maid who now appears to be a lowlife herself, and who will probably be deported for past lies and misstatements, said that he forced himself on her although there was not a scratch on his body. The whole thing is so political and crass. Vance has to go. He was trying to boost his own image by going after the most sensationalistic of stories -perverted French aristocrat in our midst!! And now he looks like the goat.
While I think it is absolutely just to protect one's daughters and sisters and mothers, one cannot forget about one's sons and brothers and fathers who could be jailed and abused based on a fabrication.

Minard, I followed this case obsessively. I was fascinated by DSK, his history, his importance in the global world of finance and how, how in the world he allowed himself to get into this mess. Certainly, men suffer with false accusations and I have seen it myself - when the desire to protect the woman allows for all kinds of mendacious destruction to some poor guy. This was no poor guy. He was known for sexual promiscuity, extreme promiscuity, and roughness. You can get away with a lot in France under the banner of privacy, but this guy took it to the extreme. By our definitions, he was a perpetrator of the most blatant sexual harassment, to the point that professional women at the IMF or French politicians (who cared) would not allow themselves to be alone with him. This is no choir boy. And there was evidence, there were scratches, injuries. It seems that Ms. Diallo has done a few things to survive and doesn't seem to fit into the original category of crushed innocent flower but there was violence in that hotel. And France, wonderful France, does not have an extradition treaty with the US. So if DSK got on that plane, he was out of the reach of the DA forever. And the DA thought that they had credible evidence. Vance did his job. Why would he take all that risk? To humiliate a French international dignitary? Hmm.... I don't see what he would have to gain. Ms. Diallo wasn't upfront with the facts and in the end the DA thought in a situation where so much is he said, she said.. That she was simply not credible in the end. So the case looks like it will be dismissed. But I think that Vance did his job. What jumps out at me is WHY would a guy, the head of the IMF, the architect of a bailout package to save the European Union, a brilliant diplomat and capable economist, and would be President of France risk so much to get a blow job from a maid? What is wrong with this guy? Didn't he know where he was? This isn't France. The US is a pretty straight-laced place and he should have known where he was, what he was doing and what could potentially happen to him if he was caught doing illegal, rough things with maids and/or hookers. The guy should just count his blessings and go home. My humble opinon.
August 23, 2011 7:27 AM - petebklyn
Vance is elected official and doubt he will resign not should he. Because he embarrassed an a**hole bigwig?
And isn't the NYPD who determines if the guy should be pulled off plane and arrested anyway?
