Observations from one of my daily investment letter guys:

So I did something I never do, I opened up the release of the recent Empire State survey, which was poo, at -7.7, but that is not the interesting part. As you might know with a lot of these surveys, there are regular questions and supplementary questions. And in the supplementary questions, they asked about difficulties in finding skilled workers.
So businesses naturally responded that they have difficulty finding workers with advanced computer skills (I am one of those dumb Americans who is not great with technology), but here is the number two kind of worker that they have a hard time finding: they have a hard time finding workers who are “punctual and reliable.”
I need you all to think about how incredible this is. Here we are, with almost ten percent unemployment, and it’s not that people are beating down the door for jobs, it’s that you can’t get people to show up on time for work! It’s great! This is what I was talking about before. I told you that I was looking for someone to mow the lawn this summer when my wife was away, and I was having a hell of a time finding someone, even for seventy bucks, and then the guy that I do hire totally steamrolls one of our baby trees. People have been saying “It’s hard to find good help these days” for years, but seriously, what is this country coming to? What happened in the last ten years, in between four percent unemployment and ten percent unemployment, which is really seventeen percent unemployment, and you still can’t get people to show up at work on time.

You can't make this stuff up

This generalized blanket statement cum personal narrative has been making the rounds this month in various conservative venues. Sometimes it is the wife telling the "story" and sometimes the husband. I haven't heard the "baby trees" version until this morning--usually it is rose bushes. I get cynical when see or hear the word "people" as it seems increasingly easy to accuse everyone of a few guilty people.
I have no doubt there are lazy people in America. I fear, however, that there are far more stupid people in America.
You never hear about the "people" who work two jobs and show up on time. Positivity is boring.

The Empire State survey is a well respected survey of thousands of businesses. It's not just some bullshit made up by some right wing rag.

And yes, I'm more than familiar with many people who work two jobs.

I caught some of a Rush Limbaugh show last week during which a woman called in and claimed that she owned a small company in Michigan and was trying to hire 10 people at $75k a year and full benefits but "no one wanted to work overtime and I told all the interviewees that overtime would happen a lot." Um, yeah right, lady...sure. Why would anyone want to take a job that pays $75,000 per year when they can sit at home and get $12,000 per year. I can only imagine the luxury that 12k per year buys, especially in Michigan.

I did like the pic, Dave. I am far more interested in a man's, um, antecedents, than his front.
I am sure the survey is well respected, but I still think that there are more people who would be happy and capable to take a job AND show up on time. Just fire the tardy and hire the right person. There is a profound lack of consequences in our society.

HP was going apple route with integrated Hardware, OS, and ecosystem apps and that's the only way to combat the mighty juicy fruit. Now that they bowing out, I don't see the hardware-only OEMs having any shot against apple. Unless Motorola purchase means Google going that integrate approach - which would be a bad decision by Goog.

this sucks as a consumer, I want more competition and more choices - albeit I like apple stuff

HP purchasing Palm was just a stupid decision.

Personal computers are a super low margin item.
Looking back, IBM's decision to sell its PC decision seems like a smart move.

The problem with Dell is that PCs are an enormous chuck of their business, and they don't really have any other products that can carry the company.

In the mobile/tablet space, I predict that in a few years we will have something similar to the PC space, with Android being the dominant player across a ton of devices, and Apple taking the high margin "Mass market high end" segment.

Scott, the problem for the OEMs in the tablet space is ipad is priced low - to the point it's tough for competition to get to that level hence why they dominating the whole mkt. diff in App count for tablets is hurting android tablets but the price is hurting them too - ie they're slightly higher or same as ipad and that won't cut it when they chasing the dominant alpha

I don't buy any Apple products.
I don't really care for their 'one size fits all' mentality, I hate using touch screens, and I have philosophical issues with their policies.

I think Google's purchase of Moto was a brilliant move, because it helps take care of much of the patent risk that Android has.
In the current screwed up patent world, all big players incorporate technology patented by each other, often without even realizing it until after the product is launched and the roll-outs start. The best defense against that is to make sure that you have a huge patent library as well, so you can counter-sue and then negotiate a patent sharing agreement.

DIBS, apple pc/laptops dominate the highend but not the whole mkt like ipad is doing. ipad being priced the same or lower than competition, makes it very hard for someone to NOT pick it as it was the case with MAC's where the higher price drove some folks to go with lower price PC's

In terms of current market share, iPad and iPod are dominant, although iPod sales are mostly irrelevant now.

Mac still has a small market share despite getting some spillover bumps from people who use their other products.
iPhone has already peaked in terms of market share. I see them being a solid number 2 in terms of mobile OS platforms.

Long-term, a problem with Apple is that most of their business is based on consumer products with a 2-3 year lifespan and only moderate "friction" stopping customers from going to another product during the replacement cycle.
They have not really slipped up yet, but I think it is almost inevitable that they will sooner or later.

President Obama’s support is falling away faster than stock prices
collapse. The newest Gallup poll has the President’s
approval rating on a number of key issues falling sharply
in recent months. The survey notes that 26% of those
surveyed approve of the President’s handling of the
economy, while 71% disapprove. These figures
compared to and already “difficult” 37%/60% split in mid-
May. Also, only 29% approve of the way the President is
handling job growth, while 65% disapprove. Further, only
24% approve of his handling of the federal budget deficit
and this is down from 32% in May. 71% disapprove,
meaning that 5% as to confused to register their approval
or disapproval. These are not good numbers for the
President. His boat is sinking… fast.

Not surprising, the split between Republicans,
“independents” and Democrats on how they view the
President is striking. 5% of Republicans and 19% of
independents approve of his handling of the budget
deficit; 52% of Democrats do. This latter figure is all the
more disconcerting for the President and his aides, for
only half of the Democrats support him at this point. That
cannot be spun positively, no matter how hard one tries.

Thanks, Dave. I am sure everyone will find this information news. Obama could create 200 million jobs this afternoon and it would still be spun negatively. I am sure he is toast, but once he is gone I am certain it will appear more obvious that he didn't actually have the power to do anything. What makes things worse for him is that doesn't seem to be able to even put on a show of fighting.

Ha, I wish I had Apple stock. The have certainly had an awesome decade with near flawless execution.

I am just wary of any company that basis it's entire success of staying on top of changing rapidly changing consumer and technology trends year after year.
There is a lot of risk in that strategy, as Sony, Palm, Nokia, Motorola, and RIM have all discovered at some point.

In contrast, companies like IBM, Microsoft, HP, and Cisco can all afford to make major mistakes, sometimes for years at a time, and remain profitable due to their focus on corporate products with multi year maintenance agreements and huge barriers to switching.
As Sun discovered, you can't thrive in that environment, but you certainly can stay afloat for many years.

I'm a firm believer of 3-bullets firing. 1st bullet is when I think something is real attractive. 2nd bullet is when I still believe the core reason for investing is still there but the price got 10% or more lower. 3rd bullet has to be when it is going up. often times, I don't fire the 3rd bullet as the stk looks to still go lower and that I probably made a mistake buying it and I unload position and lick wounds.

dave, you don't want to raise the vacation issue. Or, if you do, you should look at GW's vacation schedule during his terms first.

Sort of like how Obama doesn't want to raise the 'you wear funny jeans' issue with Romney. [ http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/president-obama-plans-defeat-mitt-romney-making-fun-172610496.html ]

To briefly hit the 'americans are dumb and lazy' bit- there was a really interesting Planet Money (npr.org/money) podcast recently where they talked about the fact that 'job training' programs are essentially useless (over and over again, they pretty much do nothing to help the really disadvantaged folks).

Turned out a big reason for this was that the job skills most of the chronically screwed people needed to learn weren't even what we would think of as job skills. It was stuff like punctuality, anger management, working with others. Following research, they concluded that the best (and very frustratingly, the nearly only effective) time to successfully teach these skills was preschool age.

Kids randomly selected to get preschool (couple hours, couple times a week, as I recall) had, even 20-40 years later, vastly better outcomes (by age 40 86% less likely to have spent time behind bars, at age 27, 7% had been arrested for drugs vs. 25%, lower teen pregnancy, better earnings, etc.). It was pretty amazing. [here's the study: http://www.highscope.org/Content.asp?ContentId=232 ]

Some stats from an article elsewhere [http://tinyurl.com/3v5fbxs ]: "A similar study in Illinois showed that students who attended the Chicago Child-Parent Centers were 70 percent less likely to be arrested for a violent crime by age 18. Between the ages of 18 to 24, those not in the program were 24 percent more likely to be incarcerated."

Which is not to say that people should be written off, but is to say that comprehensive quality preK would pay the government back in spades.

My, you all have been busy this morning.

The rationale for a Bachmann candidacy really disappears with Perry in the race. I really only see two candidates able to go the distance in the primaries and they both have their strengths and weaknesses as a general election candidate. If we posit that Obama heads into 2012 more or less in the same posture as Carter, I don't yet see either Perry or Romney as having Reaganesque appeal, and the moment in the culture of our politics is quite different. It is going to be a very interesting ride.

A hearse.
Canadian.
Aerosmith's tour bus(it's not, BUSH used their tour bus)
Killing the economy
Running over Christians
Burns muslim gas
Actually 50 gas guzzling vehicles

The Republican bus:

I come from a long line of (mostly) big women who look like they could rip the leg off a buffalo and beat you to death with it without breaking a sweat. But there's a difference (often overlooked in the media) between being fat because you're just a big heavy person, and being fat because you're desperate to become really really fat because you're TOTALLY CRAZY.

Morning all!

On the apple thing, I don't have any problem with apple, except that all apple products hate me. I have rarely been able to successfully use a mac, and the iPod I had kept screwing up. I bought a Zune. Not cool, but it works for me. That's also one of the main reasons I have a Motorola Droid rather than an iPhone.

Scott, get back to work! I like them paying you! ;-)

Speaking of work, I have housework to do today. My in-laws are coming in tomorrow. I always get nervous for some reason. I'm quite happy that they're coming, since we're all very close, but there's just something about the mother-in-law coming in that makes me nervous.

Actually, the carbon issues and many others ARE job killers. The head of the EPA thinks she can enact all sorts of laws without going through Congress. Kinda like the NLRB, another organization that Obama has taken over.

From Wikipedia:

In 2005, Ben Stein said in the American Spectator:

“ Can anyone even remember now what Nixon did that was so terrible? He ended the war in Vietnam, brought home the POWs, ended the war in the Mideast, opened relations with China, started the first nuclear weapons reduction treaty, saved Eretz Israel's life, started the Environmental Protection Administration. Does anyone remember what he did that was bad?
Oh, now I remember. He lied. He was a politician who lied. How remarkable. He lied to protect his subordinates who were covering up a ridiculous burglary that no one to this date has any clue about its purpose. He lied so he could stay in office and keep his agenda of peace going. That was his crime. He was a peacemaker and he wanted to make a world where there was a generation of peace. And he succeeded.

That is his legacy. He was a peacemaker. He was a lying, conniving, covering up peacemaker. He was not a lying, conniving drug addict like JFK, a lying, conniving war starter like LBJ, a lying, conniving seducer like Clinton—a lying, conniving peacemaker.[14]

lest it be misinterpreted, 'fruitcake' was meant in the sense of 'nutjob'. I always forget that word has often been used as an anti-gay (although I have always assumed Stein is straight) term.

I have to say, there are things I like about Chris Christie. He pulls no punches. He can speak his mind without sounding like a nutjob. You can't say that about the current crop of runners in the Rep. primary. It isn't even their fiscal policies that scare me so much, it's their conservative social "values"- their desire to christianize the country. You'll have to move over, BHI- you gays will be joined by us Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Taoists, Wiccans, etc.

bfarwell,
I see I'll have to take out my patented ACME de-literalizer for you as well.
No, when I say "parents" I am speaking about the idea of an adult or two that guide the growth, education and development of a child through those most critical years from 0-5.

You'd be surprised at how many people say they are "parents" but are really just crash test dummies waiting for reality to hit them when their kids grow up.

Does anybody know a good painter who can do drywall, is fast, neat and is fairly priced?

I have a guy in Staten Island, but dealing with him is a pain. He is Mexican, will NOT quote a price, and has
almost a horror of seeing himself as a small businessman and discussing something so crass and unfriendly
as the amount of money he will charge me, his friend, his wonderful friend. Sigh. We sort of came to the conclusion some time ago that his default rate is 200 bucks a day. But.....he takes a long time to get organized and to shop,
etc. etc. and I wind up thinking the guy did x number of hours but spent x amount of time shopping and
getting stuff he forgot etc. And this sort of rambling, gentle manner of his winds up costing me a lot after all is
said and done. And because he is so "nice" and "friendly", it is hard to boss him around, which is quite easy for me
usually.

Bottom Line.

He is a pain in the ass.

I need to do some freaking repairs from that rain last week. Tenant understandably not happy and I need to
get somebody there pretty fast.

Any recommendations??? Thanks.

Bottom line: I have decided at this juncture in life, this month anyway, not to learn how to do ceiling drywall repairs)

bhi -- I never bothered trying to get anyone from AL. I only go with referrals. But back when we were renovating, I joined when they dangled a free subscription. What i didn't like is that if you gave someone a B, you had to try to work out your differences with them. I had at least one vendor -- Denton and others will know who I am talking about -- who I would have blasted, and with good reason. I would not have wanted to have to talk with him again, and I would not have been willing to negotiate differences until I could raise the grade. So I think the AL rules, at least at that time, skew the grading. We've been burned enough that we only go with references from people we know (which includes those commenters on the b'stoner forum that I have come to trust as reliable).

That was our second trip to Anella (and permanent records). We really like it; it's just far for us or we would go more often. Two revelations -- Anella's tomato and peach salad and a 2-CD set of Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Cotoun (semi-psychedelic African music from late 60s-mid-70s).

Arkady, thanks for Winston's number. And M4L, thanks for those numbers. I need to get the work done next week, so I'll see what I can arrange. I really feel horrible about the tenant. She was pretty pissed. Understandably. And she is really a good tenant. It is embarrassing to be apologizing constantly though. Next spring, I will get a new roof which should eliminate these issues when we get driving rains. Also, I need a new hatch because I have to be a gymnast (and a strong one!!) stand on ladder and punch off the hatch to go to the roof, so I avoid going up there. But for now, it is patch the roof, patch the ceilings.....

Hi there, Legion. Thanks. I have been forcing myself into a new routine so I am trying to limit my self on the OT. I am doing so-so with the routine, partly because it is hard and partly because not so many people are around right now. There is lots of vacationing going on now. IJ, I've lived in 4th and 5th floor walk-up's for most of the last 10 years... it's a pain when you're carrying things, but otherwise I think it's a net positive. it's crazy how people who are happy to spend 45 mins a day on an elliptical machine turn into whiney toddlers between the 3rd and 4th floors.

also - not all 4th/5th floor walkups are created equal. some just seem easier to manage.

"sounds like a good soundtrack for a crazy party!"

Very much so. Wish I'd known about these guys 15-20 years ago. You have to listen to about 5-6 songs before you can get a grip on the scope of their sound. One tune sounds like traditional drumming with memphis horns. Another has wicked surf guitar and drums with a slight inflection of African rhythms and very traditional-sounding West African vocals. A third might sound somewhat Fela-esque. Some hints of mambo here and there. Etc.

While I am discussing self-discipline, I have made another decision to be more productive, more creative and less chronically aggravated. I am going to seriously limit my consumption of political news coverage. I have to figure out
a more or less efficient way to follow the key issues without getting sucked into the media-defined daily stupidities.
If Congresss and our elected representives are embarrassing excuses for leaders, the "independant" journalism that
we consume 24-7 is mostly recycled crap. Somebody latches on to a sensationalistic way to cover some event and it
goes through a thousand permutations by all the usual bloviators. Boring, not helpful, waste of time and energy.

When I was in Japan for those years, I was cut off from the usual media bath we live in and I felt like I was better informed from reading a few good magazines and papers and books than when I was home consuming news constantly.

Well, I am off to try to accomplish something.

You really can't have too many pairs of shoes. I have so many (from when I had a real job) that every season I used to go shoe shopping in my own closet because I would forget what I had in there. Then I would go shopping for what I still needed! (Suffice to say, all that has stopped the past few years.)

We are having dinner with my parents at Swifty's. They don't have karaoke at Swifty's. We would be better at a Cole Porter duet.
The last time I was at Montero's on a karaoke night I sang "Love is Like a Heat Wave."

My mother just assumes that once J.P. Morgan's sister moved away from Brooklyn Heights in 1920 there really isn't any reason for our sort to go there. If my mother wants to think all of my neighbors are Italian plumbers, all the better. When I lived in the West Village they wouldn't even come to visit after dark, assuming they would be hacked to death by thugs or drag queens on LSD.

I don't think point was by any means nixon was good president. he was paranoid anti-semite and cynical politco.
but that republican party has morphed into this taliban-like group of rightwing zealots that even nixon seems like a liberal. even reagan would be crucified on foxnews today for saying "These are the values inspiring those brave workers in Poland ... WOW...the Bed Stuy grandmother facing eviction is on NBC Nightly News

Sorry Dave, no real suggestions for yahoo mail.
I hate the new format, and their quality seems to be going down hill rapidly.

It might be a temporary issue that will fix itself in an hour or two
If not, you could try their password recovery process.

It has happened the past 2 days. I've had to use the password recovery each time to login. It has not happened on my office computer but that one bizarrely is running the old format style!!

Seems only to happen when I turn off my Mac. I never actually sign off

Everyone is gone? How will I waste my time all evening, now that I caught up?

Trust me, Scott, I have nothing of interest to say. On the average day I speak to no one between the age of 15 and 88. I spent my day getting my dad's car inspected and scouring the dollar stores for 7-day pill boxes.

The sky is almost black, and sunset is not for another half hour! Thunder in the distance, haven't seen any lightning yet.

How's the new job? Still enjoying the commute?

A Facebook friend of mine said the Bed-Stuy woman would be allowed to stay; not sure the details though.

I got trapped at my local when it began raining - I was reading the new issue of n+1 outside. The Friday bartenders, who are always changing, don't know me as a regular since I never go on Fridays.

Then I went to Bark for takeout and waited 15 minutes, which seemed interminable. The looks of customers already eating or bussing their trays, and the looks of couples waiting for food themselves, was depressing.

But the weekend awaits - all good things. So who cares.

Hi rf. Still loving the commute. New job is a lot of work. Much more challenging than law firm life, which is good for me. Life is sort of on pause while I get into the new job.

I am on the metro north. Not home though. On way to new haven to rendezvous with wife and kids and then head to the cape for a week. There are two moonfaced chicks on the train, maybe 20 years old, returning from a day of apartment hunting. The place in thie village is just too expensive, but Williamsburg just sounds so cool and they can get more space..... God I hate Brooklyn.

Do you think you'll be able to make it to the Cobblesnaps Production next Thursday? It's at the pool hall at 7th Ave. and Flatbush.

Let them have their dress-up dreams. You are on another plane of existence. No need to hate.

Really! Just because you hate Brooklyn, doesn't mean everybody does.
