16,000 officers on the streets of London last night and seems to have calmed down. However, small flare ups outside London.

Yes, well, at least I know I'm a moron.

Peaches were orgasmic, too. As you said, they're "eat over the sink" peaches.

Have a safe flight and a great trip. Don't get too close to the Vermont border - I read somewhere that they're expecting swarms of WASPs in Vermont this week.

I wonder how much better police response would be to rioting here.

During the Los Angeles riots in 1992, it seems like most of the rioting was contained within 24 hours, with some pockets lingering a couple more days.

I don't mind putting a picture in the OT threads I start, but I don't have one handy and I don't think it would be nice to steal the one Brownstoner used.

A CobbleSnaps production is a huge gala, heavily advertised, to which all are invited, and newbies and lurkers are encouraged to attend. It usually involves massive quantities of glitter that NEVER goes away.

In Snappy parlance, an "unoffical gathering" is a smaller group, planned more than a day in advance, typically within a week (e.g., our last Montero's gathering).

In further Snappy parlance, an "impromptu" is typically a gathering planned the same day (e.g., our White Horse gathering the day Mr. B killed the OT).

M4L, I agree with you. Your post just made me curious as to what our stats are.

From the time the first mention of an alternative site was brought up, I've always thought that one of the two largest challenges is how to maintain interest without a staff of paid writers to bring in new eyeballs.

BTW, the other challenge is how to set up and carry out site policies in a way that pisses off the fewest number of people.

Anyone wondering what the nation's political temperature was
got a good reading in yesterday's Recall election in Wisconson.

Results: Republican retained majority despite millions and millions spent to oust
them after the Union/Unfunded Liabilities debate. This is the unusual case where even the President
stepped in to try to influence the debate (The feds have been doing that a little too much recently).

A Balanced Budget Amendment would go a long way to quell fears at home and abroad.

BHS,
It seems to me that this recall effort had a very level playing field:
-Wisconsin is not Idaho or Texas by a long shot.
-There was enormous media coverage on all sides of the issue.
-The Republican Governor's stance was balanced out by the big Union names and the President's bully pulpit.
-There was a good deal of time for the voters to assess their options.

August 10, 2011 2:24 PM - Legion
rf,
Taxing the "rich" might be a concession in Balanced Budget Amendment talks.
I would rephrase it though as taxing "job suppliers", that alone might make it more amenable to those involved.
August 10, 2011 2:26 PM - rf

Edited at August 10, 2011 2:26 PM
August 10, 2011 2:26 PM - BoerumHillScott
I don't see how there could any be any hope of a balanced federal budget when almost all federal taxes rates are at a 70+ year low.

I will keep repeating myself: return rates for everyone to 1993-2001 levels and adjust from there.

Defense spending also needs to be brought into line with whatever the tax rate is.

Long term, entitlement programs also need to be adjusted, but that can be done by tinkering with eligibility ages and payment rates.

States and local governments have their own sets of issues, but most of them are already forced to have mostly balanced budgets.
August 10, 2011 2:28 PM - Legion
Notice one thing however:
Not once, not a single time in this entire debate or even in the healthcare debate, has the issue of Tort Law reform been addressed.
This is not simply a huge medical issue, this is an issue that strikes at the heart of our society and influences insurance rates for automobiles, liability, home ownership, businesses, etc. etc.

There are too many "sacred cows" hiding in congress still.
August 10, 2011 2:30 PM - Legion
"Yeah, just look at all the jobs that were created during the past 3 years by not taxing the rich!"
rf,
this statment ignores the reality of jobs creation as it stands.
even if the "rich" continued to hold steady employing people despite ever increasing government mandates.
That would do nothing to make up for the millions entering the job market yearly.
The trick is to keep the "job suppliers" motivated to produce more jobs.
...and that doesn't mean government jobs which are funded by taxes from the private sector.

.
August 10, 2011 2:32 PM - dibs
The reason that jobs are not getting created is because businesses are fearful of more taxes and more regulation out of Obama. Ask any businessman what his key risks are and the y are 1. the economy and 2. regulation....rising healthcare costs, EPA, etc, etc, etc.

August 10, 2011 2:33 PM - Legion
BHS,
How about keeping everyone happy?
Just roll back spending levels to 2008 levels.
Stop allowing congress to automatically increase their trillion dollar credit card by the use of base line budgeting which gives an automatic 8% increase in spending yearly regardless of economic indicators (specifically inflation which was very low up until recently)
Think about it: an 8% automatic increase in spending across the board when inflation wasn't really an issue.
8% of a Trillion is the GDP of many small nations.

I am not saying that I think that such a simplistic message as "tax the rich" is true or wise (although I think it's truer and wiser than the opposite, but I know it's more complicated than that). Just saying that as the tea party gained power with simplistic messages, eventually I hope the Dems will unite behind their president/candidate and give the electorate a sound bite that will win for them. And since there are a lot fewer voters that make $250k+ than those who make less, it will be a winner.
August 10, 2011 2:36 PM - Legion
...with a yearly budget of nearly 3 Trillion dollars,
my math tells me that our government has been more than happy to "get by" on a 240 BILLION dollar raise yearly.

I wonder what they do with all that money?
August 10, 2011 2:38 PM - BoerumHillScott
I fully support rolling back discretionary spending to 2008 levels as well.
Entitlement spending needs to be adjusted to match changing demographic realities.

Medical reforms, including tort reform is needed to keep medical costs from eating a larger and larger part of the economy.
August 10, 2011 2:41 PM - Legion
rf,
This is beyond one party winning the battle of the sound bites,
as we see from the markets and what's happening around the world,
there is no continuing on this same line of approach.

We are looking for a win for the people. Sure everyone can just take to the streets and "win" something from job producers for the night. What those people fail to see is that the entire nation loses in the long term. Rioting in England is an example of the "class warfare" mentality.
Burning down the neighborhood bakery is a loss in both columns.

The objection to tort reform is that it basically hurts the victim because it would cap awards. Granted we need a lot more common sense about suing doctors and hospitals, but I have a friend who is a malpractice lawyer, a very good one. I've heard some of his stories- and he is also the kind of lawyer who is bluntly honest with a family, telling them if they have a case or not. I've see him turn down cases because he told the family a emotional case is a losing case. There was no basis for the suit. the kind of tort reform the Republicans want would protect hospitals and doctors from their own mistakes. What we need more is a way to weed out frivolous lawsuits from the ones with real cause.

Legion, I agree with what you say at 2:41 but disagree on how to fix it and its reasons. The other day there was a reprot that for all the bailouts, those entities that took the money to stay afloat di not reinvest it into the economy- they are sitting on it. Roberta is right- where aer the jobs? If these corporations aer too afraid to invest in the economy, they have no right to a bailout, and no casue to complain because they are part of the problem, not the solution. As far as I can tell, neither party is part of a solution. So far.

I would say that percentage is higher dibs,
when I say cash practice, I mean for visits to primary care doctors really.
Family practitioners, pediatricians, internists, etc.
Doctors could charge a low and reasonable rate for basic services and still come out far ahead of
all these costs associated with compliance and insurance regulations/red tape.

What we are really talking about is the middle class since those in the high brackets can certainly afford paying out of pocket and they usually do, while those without means are covered already.
I guess it would take an in depth study and analysis of what is reasonable to pay for one's healthcare. I still say doctor's would come out ahead with cash and with a lot less stress. Let's keep in mind what the average plumber, electrician, car mechanic gets for an hourly labor rate.

"Legion, strangely you don't mention speaking with a single person who was hurt by a negligent doctor or nurse. It seems that any analysis of tort reform would first start with the victims of the tort."

BR,
Sure, by all means address the doctor side as well. Let's have doctor courts as has been suggested and let's get rid of doctors who are repeatedly brought up for malpractice (so-called malpractice recidivists).
Here's an option that a tort lawyer told me himself; raise the bar from "negligence" to "reckless endangerment". That should get rid of frivolous lawsuits and good.

Legion, I see it as a small but not momentum-shifting win for dems. Dems took recall in 2 districts that GOP won in 2008 when Obama won Wisconsin. Put another way, 1/3 of GOP senators eligible for recall lost their seats over the Walker budget stuff. If all 19 seats were up at once, we'd be looking at a dem-controlled Seante. GOP predictably held strongholds. Tens of millions of national $$ came in on the GOP side. The scary thing for me is how much $$ is now being spent on state legislative races. This is the beginning of the Citizens United era of unlimited spending. I see an increasingly corrupting influence of political $$ at every level in the foreseeable future.

That morning when the Snappy family came crashing down, my mother had to make a terrible choice after docs and paramedics tried for almost an hour to save Pappa Snappy. Regarding replies...
The default is threaded, where replies show up under the parent post.
In my past experience with boards where multiple entries are shown on the same page, this starts to break down from a UI/usability perspective around 20-30 posts under a topic.
For that reason, I set the view to be flat here, but threaded in the forum.

I wish there was an indicator/link to the parent post of a reply, but that is not part of the drupal default.
The id of the parent post is kept in the database, so it is something that could be added later with a bit of programming.

I am glad that everyone here is so helpful in my quest to send myself to an early cholesterol ridden grave.

We never do greasy fast food because Wendy can't eat it, but since this is her last night in Alabama I think I might take my son for a walk to either Jay/Willoughby or Atlantic/Grand this evening.

BHS- thanks.

Snappy- making the decision to let my mother go after her heart stopped and took too long to restart several times, was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do in my life. My brother ad siter were not there when the doctors told me I had to make a decision. I still see her eyes- it sent me to a shrink for 2 years before I could reasonably cope.

Randi, I know I'll regret it, but damn, you gotta admit that it sounds SO GOOD!

Bxgirl, the heart thing was what got Pappa Snappy in the end. They restarted it, then it'd quit again, he'd go for several minutes with no heartbeat, only to start the process all over again. I think my mom was hoping he'd hang in there at least until i could fly in, but alas, she decided she couldn't keep having them do that to him and so he died when I was en route to the airport.

Snappy- that's heartbreaking. My dad actually waited for my sister and I to see him one last time and I spent the last night in the hospital room with my mom holding her hand. The hospital wanted me to go home but I told them I wasn't leaving her. I was a nurse's aid in college on surgical ward. I knew what would happen. The nurses were wonderful- all night they kept coming in to check on us, brought me coffee and something to eat. But in the end, there is no decision I've ever I've ever made that I felt more stongly was the right thing to do orthat hurt me more.

I don't judge anyone for the end of life decisions they have to make for loved ones or for themselves.

I just wish our society and medical system was set up better to deal with that inevitable part of life.

When my father was in the hospital with less than a day left to live, the nurses and staff more or less called me and my family murders because we wanted to give him more morphine to ease his pain.
August 10, 2011 3:56 PM - MontroseMorris
I agree, Snaps, Mickey D's salads are really good. If they really aren't healthy, I really don't want to know about it. I never get burgers and fries there.

Amen, Scott, re end-of-life issues. I think it's really important for hospitals to train their staff, the residents and nurses who are most in contact with family members, on how to deal with this terrible time for the family. It's tough on the staff member too, but such a different perspective from the family. My dad has made his wishes crystal clear and I have it in writing. But I know it will be hard if I have to be the one who decides.

It really was terrible the way the hospital made us feel during those last 2 days.

On the other hand, he should never have gone to the hospital, but my aunt who he was living with for the last 3 months could not handle the thought of him dieing in her home, so she took him there to die.

Legion, I can't vouch for Wendy's, but at McD's go for the bacon ranch salad with the chicken grilled not fried, switch out the ranch dressing for the balsamic vinegar and 86 the croutons(you didn't honestly expect me to take the salad as is with no changes did ya?!). That's the good stuff!

BHS- that's awful. My aunt was a different story- I was her health care proxy and she was dying of cancer. But she appeared lucid so they would aks her, we want to do did procedure and that procedure. And she would say yes- not really understanding what was going on anymore. I was furious with them. Then they decided to send her home but expected me to fid a hospital bed and get everything set up in a day. The community liasion ever screamed at me they wanted ehr out. I did it and she died a day later. I should have kicked their asses for what they put her through in her last days.

the angus burgers at McD's are decent. I like to order them when I see there's none in the bin so that they cook me a new one.
August 10, 2011 4:18 PM - BoerumHillScott
When it hit up the "food by the pound" places, I always calculate in my head how much each ingredient costs, and I refuse to put any lower cost items in the dish.

This confuses the hell out of my son, who usually wants lots of rice and noodles.

LOL just read this

"All food production is related to agriculture. Even the evil potato chips ranted on about earlier in the thread are made from . . . . potatoes. Potatoes have to be grown, in the ground, by farmers. For Dr. Pepper I guess it's the sugar that is again, grown by farmers. For Hershey Kisses, the sugar and milk. buying cheaper junkfood actually helps the farmer, if you are buying food, period, not just food straight off the farm. "

im so gonna start saying that when the farm to table crowd starts mouths off in their holier than thou diatribes.
