What a great time last night.
Huge thanks to CGar for organizing and arranging for the cakes.

Also huge thanks to everyone who gave money for the site. With the donations last night and a couple already received from PayPal, we now almost have enough money to pay for all the expenses incurred to date, including pre-paying for a year of hosting service.
I expect advertising to more than pay for the remainder over the course of the year.

I posted the Current Site Financial Statement, and also linked to it from the "About" page.

Yep, Minard was there, and very nice.
I expect CGar to give us a complete roster and recap of the night's festivities once he gets up.

How late did everyone stay? I think I left around 11:30.

Minard, wonderful to finally meet you! And LUES/NoLoSlo (did I get that right?), nice chatting with you, too! Special shout out to wonton, who I really enjoyed meeting again but actually got to chat with this time!

Anyone see the story in the NYT today "In Bedford-Stuyvesant, a Black Stronghold, a Growing Pool of Whites"? Here we go again. That should be good for 400 comments when it goes up on Brownstoner. Unless they put it up at 4 pm, as they tend to.

Cobble, CGar gave me all 2 trays of them. ate some last night. and eating them as breakfast now. there is really NO time that brownies is not a viable treat. it's a 24/7 snack for me.

"The gold market “reversed”

"The government is good at one thing: it

you a crutch and say, “See; if it weren’t for

Or as Ronald Reagan once said,

Sorry I missed the party.I'm in Vermont until after Labor Day.

BTW, if anyone's visiting southern Vermont, I have a show of my B&W landscapes at the Dover Free Library in (naturally) Dover--a vestigial town between West Dover, where Mt. Snow is located, and tiny East Dover. It's nice to get out of the City once a year and ski house rentals are VERY cheap in the off season (thus my comment on the recent Brownstoner thread about second home ownership.

There's a funny story about the cakes, which I told a few of you. I got Arkady's birthday cake (yes, at Marquet on Court Street). And I also made 2 batches of brownies - one tray for the Brownie Whore and one tray for the other 31 people.

When I checked in at Montero's yesterday, Pepe said that, of course he'd be there last night, as Biff and I were celebrating our birthdays, which is what the bartender had (wrongly) told him. Turns out, acting on an erroneous tip, Pepe had gone to Costco and gotten the "Happy Birthday" sheet cake for Biff and me, big enough to feed 60! Cobble skillfully removed "Birthday" and replaced it with "End of the OT", using glitter icing of course.

What a great time i had last night! Minard- sorry we didn't get a chance to talk more (and you too, LUWS)-and letting you both know that the look of confusion I perpetually have is my lack of hearing. I still have functional brain cells so if you asked me a question and I replied with, "Oh, the cheescake looks lovely in your aquarium," you'll know my hearing aid was not working right. :)

I thought it was one of the nicest gatherings we've had. Arkady- Happy Birthday! I have never seen so much cake on one table. You looked beautiful in the blue top btw. And rob- did the toothbrush look more pink when you got it home?
August 5, 2011 10:53 AM - dibs
Well, WonTon, I was regularly called Hom Sup Lo by my Canto firends and was told it meant "rubbish man" or basically a pervert.

How did I miss the BROWNIES!!!

Seriously. I was really hungry, which is why I split early-ish. Figured I would scoot round to Fatoosh, where Kens and co. got those yummy looking felafel. Closed. So I kept walking down Atlantic looking for sustenance, and was soon pleasantly joined by BH (Mr. Cobble).

All the eating places on Atlantic were closing, but BH suggested a new felafel place on Court near Wycoff. I followed him. On the way we passed California Burrito, and I said "They're still open, so if the felafel place is shut, this is my fallback."

Getting more hungry by the second now....

Okay, well, guess what: BH's felafel had just closed their doors when I arrived. Waaaah! I doubled back to burrito land and....in the three minutes lapse they, too, had shut their doors.

I speed-walked back to the Slope, thinking I'd go to Franny's, which is open late, and have a pricey pizza. Upon arriving at Franny's, I had this exchange with the maitress 'd:

"Hi, is your kitchen open?"
Maitress (looking at watch):"It's 11:02"

"So, is it open?"
Maitress: "Sorry, we close the kitchen at 11."

AAAAAAARGH!! So I went to bed hungry.

Dave, when other Cantonese speakers tell a gwailo what a word means, you still have to look it up in the dictionary--'cause they might be joshing you. Or mis-translating. Or enjoying the pun at your expense.

The only way to really know is to go back and look at the Chinese character...cause the intonations are variable, and confusing. Like the "sap" in haam sap (lecher) and the "sap" in "laap sap" (rubbish) are pronounced in two different tones.
August 5, 2011 11:02 AM - cobblehiller

Cobble--it was my bad. I should have nipped around the corner for takeout earlier, and brought it back.

But yeah, having some finger food might be a good idea in the future. That's why Hot Bird worked well. But Hot Bird was crowded and noisy, not great for conversation.

August 5, 2011 11:07 AM - Legion
Hummm,
Just read the NYTimes story on Bed-Stuy demographics as well as the Daily News story on the "new" China-Towns of Brooklyn and Queens.
My feeling is that the census numbers are way, way off on the Flushing China Town and Queens in general.
They have the Sunset Park China town as the larger in population (perhaps if speaking only of Chinese population).
Any visit to Main Street will tell you that the Asian demographics are far larger in Flushing, especially if you add in the Korean population all along the Northern Blvd. corridor into Bayside and Little Neck.

Bed-Stuy is definitely shifting, my tenants there are of all colors. Wasn't like that before.
I don't recall any of the usual Census materials in the mail there in Bed-Stuy. Don't know if the census workers went door to door but I didn't really get the feel of a mass effort to accurately count on a one to one basis.

My feeling is that in the future, they would probably be better off counting population linked to use patterns as in electricity or water.
The DEP has been busy installing AMR's (Automated Meter Readers) in housing across the 5 boroughs. You can now log on and check the daily usage down to the cubic foot of water.
It seems to me that humans use a fairly consistent amount of water per person. Dividing total yearly usage by average human consumption per day should yield the approximate number of people.
The "average" human usage could easily be graphed to take into account stinky outliers and obsessive scrubbers.

Note: this method may not work in Europe which is notorious for non-bathers.

immigrant or 1st generation so the assumption that you must be one of them. Or maybe you speak English
to your mother who speaks Russian to you as happens in a lot of houses so even that doesn't feel wierd
to them. One Sunday am, I had a blast there. The idea was to do a power walk on the boardwalk before

won ton, it was a funny story, evidently it is deeply ingrained dislike for iced anything. The reporter went to a couple of restaurants in Brighton Beach, asked for ice in her soda or water and was told they didn't have any. And it cuts across many groups such as Ukranians and Belorussians etc. No ice! Not even in water. One old lady said that they were so sick of ice from the long winters that they did not want to see it in the summer, and, she added, our teeth are not so good.

arrghhh,

Did someone drop a copy of the Tax Code on John Kerry's head or something?
This dimwit is seriously suggesting that if a group of people do not agree with him, they should be excluded from media coverage?

This is why, as I get older, I realize that most politicians are just haircuts with talking points. They really don't seem to have the capacity for introspection or an internal mechanism for historical perspective. They manage to get themselves elected through party mechanics and off they go to change the world certain in the knowledge that they must know more by virtue of their election.

The same thing happens to celebrities. They somehow manage to get on camera and garner fame, next thing you know we have Lady GaGa commenting on world while wearing a dress made of skirt steak.

Clark is 2 blocks north of Montague, so it's mid-north Heights. It's very nice. Ask jessi, she lives up there.
August 5, 2011 2:53 PM - Donatella
That is north Heights, Dibs. It is right near the Clark Street Station and a block from the High Street A/C.
In that little corner of the world 3 block radius you have three dry cleaners, about 6 restaurants, a video place,
a wine store, a three green grocers, a movie theater, a good butcher, a pizza parlor, hair place, nail place,
a synagogue, a Lutheran church, a Prespreterian (sp?) church, a Catholic Church, health club, the library, the courts, etc.etc.
SO MUCH BETTER retail than where I am (used to live right around the corner).

August 5, 2011 3:03 PM - bxgrl
Legion- Mitt Romney needs to get his priorities straight. Fighting Gay marriage is not the kind of commitment he should be making. You's think he's be more worried about the economy. The majority of the country is not opposed to same sex marriage and equal rights for gays. If he takes up that fight he's dumber than a box of bricks.
August 5, 2011 3:03 PM - Biff Champion
"The north part is the nicest part of the heights"

I know that's the traditional thinking Minard, but to me it depends on where you are in the north part. Closer to the promenade is much nicer. When you're in the north part towards Cadman Plaza, where those buildings DIBS is referencing are, that's my least favourite part of the Heights and, in my opinion, far less desirable than the middle part of Brooklyn Heights. You can't tell me Henry and Pineapple is anywhere near as nice as areas like Garden Place, Willow Street, Columbia Heights, Remsen between Henry and the East River, etc etc etc.
August 5, 2011 3:04 PM - bxgrl

They're different, Biff, not less desirable. I always loved the North Heights and my first place was on Remsen. In fact a block from you.
August 5, 2011 3:06 PM - Donatella
I agree that Willow St. Garden Place, Columbia Heights are really the nicest, but there is a little North heights village
which is nice and the houses close to the Promenade are gorgeous. Our house was next to the Mansion House, a prewar coop, which is very well maintained and has nice apartments. Across from us were some pretty non-descript apartment
houses. It's a mixture. Plenty of frames mixed in with the brownstones all throughout the north heights..
August 5, 2011 3:07 PM - jessibaby

August 5, 2011 3:11 PM - Donatella
It is a well run building jessi. The people have been there for years and it is a nice community. They have their issues (one was cutting down a big old tree which was messing up plumbing or something) but the apartments are nice. The landscaping attractive, the gate, the doorman. It's not super fancy dancy delux, but super liveable.
August 5, 2011 3:11 PM - minard lafever
Brooklyn Heights is a mixture that's fer sure.
My new favorite walk is the length of the promenade down to Fulton Street to the new BB park and then south through the piers to Joralemon Street and back up to the heights. Very scenic.

"but there is a little North heights village

Yes, completely agree with this Dona and Jessi. That's my point. North Heights close to the water, i.e., west of Hicks Street, is beautiful. As you get closer to Henry and west of that, not so much. Still nice, of course, just not as nice as some of the other areas. Again, just my opinion.

August 5, 2011 3:11 PM - Legion
bxgrl,
The success of the Republican party in the next few years depends largely on how they handle social issues. Too much demagoguery and they will lose the independents who are largely about fiscal responsibility with a laissez-faire social attitude.

So was that a subtle statement that prices are going up at MacD & it's going to cost an arm & a leg?

That is disturbing. Gives me the shudders.

I can see someone changing a dirty diaper, but why would one change a fresh diaper? Seems pretty wasteful to me, Legion.

my phone completely bit the dust this afternoon... I took a picture of those cabinet samples, tried to email it, but it wouldn't send. I shut my phone off to reboot and it never came back. it's been on the charger for over an hour, so it's not the battery. this blows.

August 5, 2011 4:01 PM - cobblehiller
Did you try taking the battery out and putting it back in and rebooting? Mine old phone used to have some, uhm, annoying personality traits. And I had to do that to it more than a few times. Also, it may be the battery. Batteries can loose their ability, over time, to hold the charge. How old is the battery?

I went to that festival last week!
The movie "biff" was the hit of the season.

"Follows the triumphs and travails of a man and a group of internet clowns in their quest for a new home".
It was delightful.

An alcoholic beverage, popular among high-schoolers and college students. Lots of sugar and flavor makes the alcohol hard to taste. Contains:

Xing said he's not coming to the next gathering. He said it's just too boring for him.

Frankly I believe that he thinks it's a representative example of the downfall of western society and the sort of thing his parents warned him about getting caught up in when he came to the US.

Apparently a livery cab got in a minor accident, then tried to speed away against traffic before anyone could get his plate.
He did not make it far and started a chain reaction.
