I can't go tonight. I have to hang out at the PLUSA office to see who's been robbing our chocolate stash.

What's this? Someone broke into the PLUSA office? What hideous creature steals chocolates? I can't imagine anyone doing such a thing! The nerve, the audacity! (Whistling dixie and wandering off to find coffee)

(Sob.) It was really awful. I couldn't sleep so I thought a bonbon might help me drift into the arms of Morpheus. Lo! and Behold! No sweets! Just empty wrappers - slivers of silver foil & accordion-pleated papers. Who would do such a thing?!? (Interrobang.)

(Oh cripes, she's really laying it on a bit thick. How am I going to get out of this jam?! I know, I'll buy two boxes of chocolates to replace the one.)

Oh, Arkady, that must have been TRULY terrible. Awful, just awful that this has happened!

Arkady, I just copied/pasted ? from somewhere else on the web. The html filter on this board doesn't automatically recognize and translate the html equivalent, but i assume that the font we're using (I'm using) has ? in there, and so the ascii coding (or whatever the hell it is that gets passed to the computer when I hit paste) comes back correctly. It may very well be that there isn't a keyboard shortcut to get to the character, even though it's part of the font.

dave, I'm not sure I would delete anonymous posts unless they reveal personal information about any of us or are over-the-top offensive. I agree with that. As i said yesterday there are only a very few reasons to use the delete button. Personal info or over the top offensive. I don't want this site disneyfied either, but let's be honest here. We want to build a site that is a great place to visit, and brings more people. BHS did a really nice thing by setting up this site and giving us the opportunity to create something new, something that actually adds to the internet. Not only should we not waste the opportunity, we should show some respect for him. His name is the one on the whois.

"I hadn't realize how much Robert Moses was to blame for the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn."

That's what the Dodgers and Robert Moses haters would like you to believe. The fact is that Moses had no formal jurisdiction in the matter. What did happen is that O'Malley approached him about lending his support to the idea of building a stadium at the site of the present Atlantic Yards, because he felt that Moses was the only person in NY who could get things done. Moses refused to support the idea. He couldn't see the sense of condemning homes in downtown Brooklyn, when cheap space was available at Flushing Meadows. Once again, however: he had no formal jurisdiction in the matter.

The Dodgers were intent on going to LA - it was too lucrative - and were looking for a scapegoat.

Kens, I think we're all agreed. But, there's also been some talk about migrating the site to a something like Go Daddy, which will hopefully avoid the memory problems and give us more options for building it out. I think someone said it would be about $20/month. That, of course, would only be if everyone can post there with the same ease we can post here.

Popping my head in for a moment while my sister and Wendy are off doing some last minute shopping.

I made a minor change in memory settings that may help reduce the "white screen of death" problem.
I also turned on some additional error reporting that will hopefully give an error message when things go wrong, and not just a white screen.

The incremental cost of running this site over what I was running before is around $170 a year.
Advertising will cover part of those costs, but probably not all.
If you'd like to help out, I'd prefer money directly rather than though Paypal. Paypal takes a cut, and is giving me some issues in getting my account set up.

It's ironic that the site O'Malley wanted, which Moses wouldn't support, is now Atlantic Yards. I think Moses had a lot more say in the matter. Interesting footage of a meeting the Mayor convened with Moses and O'Malley.

I like that idea. If it's over the top, it will be obvious. If it's in a gray area, then consensus should be reached among a few.

For the record, if any of you will make fun of Russians or Mongolians, I will NOT be deleting it. :o) You also have permission to make fun of me all you like (not very hard to do).

So far, I have not deleted a single post, eventhough I have the ability to do so and will only do so if personal info. is displayed about anyone. That's about it. I will admit that my finger did itch when What posted the Mrs. Butterworth pics but bxgrl or someone else beat me to the punch.

My sister just got back so I have to run, but from my past experiences, the things that will destroy a site like this are not technical, but personality/judgement/governance issues.

I'll post more of my thoughts and experiences when I have more time.

Benson, I kindly ask you hold off any permanent judgement until we as a community can figure out what out moderation standards and policies should be.

the cesspool factor WAS the biggest draw tho. i wouldnt have hung out there and posted if it was just people posting cat pictures and patting each other on the back and constantly saying PLUSA PLUSA PLUSA (i cringe when i see that word btw). let people be who they are. who cares! yeah there are certain things that shouldnt be allowed, but ive already noticed very innocuous posts getting deleted (not counting the what's, im sure that was bad, tho i didnt see it)..

Rob- I agree to a large extent with that and I don't believe in deleting posts simply because someone disagrees with me or we have a blow up. I've only deleted 3 posts since this site has been up and only because they were over the top. I don't want the discussion to be dull or people not express their opinions. I agree with M4L. I like the idea of "bitching someone out" if you don't like

for shutting off commentary and create a constricted atmosphere.

Meant to say- there have to be some lines because like it or not- the OT did drive people away from brownstoner and Jon made a businessman's decision. He didn't do it well, but there isn't a businessperson here who doesn't understand why he felt he had to do it.

yo losers... I've been meaning to suggest something where it takes more than one person to delete a post. I don't know how easy it is to structure that technically, but it does solve a couple issues. for one thing, no one person would get called out for having an itchy delete finger. it would be great if we could rely on the whole board jumping on offensive posters to stop that behavior, but people who post offensive things usually do it for the purpose baiting. why give them the satisfaction of seeing everyone get flustered?

Can everyone stop for a minute? My 2 cents isn't worth more than anyone else's but I'm gonna toss it out for thought.

1. We have to find a way to agree on how this site will proceed. Otherwise, we will all wind up turning on each other and imploding before we even get off the ground with all the ideas we've put forth. That would be a real shame.

2. I also think we need to stop focussing on what happened over on B'Stoner. Good or bad, to constantly worry about the goings on over there or to argue about this or that occurring over there just looks like petty obsession imo. I get that people are still hurt, but we can't move on with our own thing here unless and until we let that go. What happened is done and cannot be changed. The only thing we can change is our reaction to it and how we will proceed with whatever it is we decide we want.

Some thoughts:

There's a big difference between censorship and common guidelines. Most blogs and chatrooms have well stated guidelines on that. It is possible for 98% of people to follow those guidelines and still have a good time posting almost anything they want. There is always the 2% that refuses.

There is a big difference between deleting opposing opinion and deleting racist, misogynist, and personal crap. If you don't like people who are not like you, whatever the "you" happens to be, I don't feel the rest of us need to be subjected to your spewage.

Politics are potential battlefields. It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Someone wants to rag on Obama's politics, hey, it's a free country, so far. I may disagree, but you go to it. Just be prepared to be challenged.
HOWEVER, the man's race is off limits when it has nothing to do with the topic. Jokes like yours, Benson, which you trotted out in the old OT, once before, are offensive to me, and to others here. Keep them for your off line friends. I do not want to see derogatory ethnic or religious or sexual orientation jokes that are stereotypic in any way to any group, on a site that I participate in. If everyone else thinks those kinds of jokes or remarks are fine, then I will be gone. I can read that excrement on Yahoo, or the Daily News sites, I don't need it here.

I think tolerances for a lot of things run the gamut here from anything goes, to a much tighter control. No one is going to get what they want, because the happy medium is somewhere in the middle. I like to think that a group of people who are successful, decently educated, and pretty much "of the world" can agree to some self control. We can have a great site, and a great open thread here. No one has the time or desire to be a hall monitor. We should all be able to self-edit before pressing "post."

And for what it's worth, I had nothing to do with blowing up the OT. I was as surprised as anyone else. I have also only complained to Jon to delete comments when they were so personally offensive to myself, Bxgrl, or Jon, that they burned a hole in the screen. The What was a large contributor to those kinds of comments, as was an early troll who knew my real name and phone number, and posted it on the site several times, along with numerous sexually offensive suggestions. Fortunately, Jon took them down immediately. That is also another reason why I will not badmouth Jon, ever. He has been nothing but helpful in protecting my identity and sense of decency. Benson, I find that joke racist. Most people of color find the joke racist. As do many others here. That alone should be reason enough to shelve it, if only in some kind of token of respect to those of us who do not share in the humor. Making gratuitous remarks about telling it to someone's face is just a feeble attempt to save face. It's not working. Taking on the mantle of aggrieved martyr for the cause of off-color jokes, and resident bigot, is even lamer.

I didn't ask that he be censored.
Moreover, at the time your advice to me was that I should just run off the computer and cool down. So I'll give you the same advice.

Your lack of respect for me goes way back, so why should I be in the least bit concerned with what you think of me now? You showed long ago that you dislike me, so just back off. This reminds me of a family fight when one person knows that to do or say A will cause
their sibling to go berserk and they do it. I used to chew rubber bands with my mouth open
to drive my sister crazy. I used to quiz her on the calorie content of cake, ice cream, candy
bars just as she was chowing down in delight. You said that joke because you knew it would
get a few people going. For me, all I can say is don't go into standup comedy for a living AND
give it a break for the love of God.
August 4, 2011 12:23 PM - Arkady
benson joking about the KKK is about as amusing as suggesting Auschwitz was a health spa. You pride yourself on an old world demeanor: code of dress, politesse. That should apply to your sense of fitness here, too.

Ok, having been site admin on several sites now, I have to weigh in. Posts that are not over the top racism should stay, anon posts should stay. Personal attacks, however, should be removed, if anything is. I just asked Scott to remove the delete function altogether. Deleting too much makes this a cliquey place, and we don't want that in our site, do we?

okay this is annoying. there's like ONE hardware store in all of soho that i know of. everytime i go in there, which is at least once a week, they give me the stankest attitude ALL the time, yet i see them be polite as a button to all their other customers. what gives? do they think they can act that way cuz they have a monopology on the hardware business around here!?!? im starting to think the people who own that store might be related or friends with the korean lady in the deli around the corner who mocks me and yells at me whenever i get iced coffee from there. why do i elicit such vitriol from so many store merchants around here?!

Try it with having a twin, dona. :) Very intense, no buffers.

I don't like the delete button but what i dislike more is when there's reason to use it. Benson says his comment wasn't racist but others say it is. Certainly I would take the word of an African-American woman over a white Italian man as to whether or nor it was perceived as racist. But the real question is what are the ground rules? And are we going to stick to them? what do we really want out of this new OT?

No. They haven't done anything in years. Guy's partner died 2 years ago & survivor really doesn't know how to tend the place (I've even had to replace batteries in a clock for him). He's selling a lot of antiques & downsizing for a 1 br in town. It does have a long garden but so did 2 others that sold recently. "It would have to be an attack on a person here."

Totally disagree. If someone made a racist remark about Al Sharpton, or some tribesman on the veldt, I'd be as upset as if they made it about me. Same goes for a racist remark about Snookie or Dov Hikind, or John Liu. My mother taught us that if people make racist jokes about other people's races, those not represented in present company, when they get home, they are making jokes about you or your group. I agree with her 100%. I'm not interested in seeing it AT ALL, FOR ANY REASON. I have absolutely no sense of humor about this.

do people recommending cashing out on ones 401k? i was doing some research on it and it seems like it's seriously frowned upon and almost impossible to take out unless you are not working. i kinda wanna take that money out and put it in the back as an emergency fund cuz in case of an emergency id be able to take it out super fast in a bank whereas with a 401K it seems like there are a gazillion hoops to jump thru.
im also kinda chary about other people playing with my money, especially when they arent making me any money at all. i dont get the point of the whole thing, it sounds scammy in fact if you google 401K scam a gazillion articles pop up about it

It's called Dollar Cost Averaging.
Assuming you have been contributing to your 401k (as well as your employer) steadily over time,
the purchases made on your account should average out to a good rate of return over the long term from buying on the peaks and the dips.

...then again,
they could pull back the curtain and find that the Wizards steering our boat are wearing no pants.
er, or something to that effect.
August 4, 2011 4:47 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
quote:

.not true. i pay 1/2 my rent, and 1/2 my bills (except student loans) every 14 days. thus there are 2-3 days worth of rent and bill money that i am saving by defaul that i am overpaying for and have been for over a year. my rent is covered thru october, but i still pay my rent and bills as if they are currently due. this gives me a nice buffer down the line, since it's a pain in the ass and sometimes almost impossible coming up with security deposits. at some point ill have to do that so this is a good way to automatically save for that.

if youre talking about saving for retirement, well that's just absurd. if i DO live that long (lol) i have no problems living off the grid on social security, being a greeter at walmart, collecting tin cans, etc etc. i think people worry WAY too much about their retirement. there's no point in saving money for it now when that money most likely will be worthless down the road and amount to very little anyway. it's stupid. much better to float where the wind takes you.

"i pay 1/2 my rent, and 1/2 my bills (except student loans) every 14 days. thus there are 2-3 days worth of rent and bill money that i am saving by defaul that i am overpaying for and have been for over a year."

And where does that money that you think you are building up actually exist???

August 4, 2011 5:03 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
what is not to make sense... i pay a months worth of rent and bills every 28 days. so over time those days add up... every 2 weeks i hand over 741.25 for a toal of 1482.50 a month (that is my rent, utilities, cable/internet and share of the dog walker bill). So i am paying 1482.50 for 28 days instead of 30-31 days like a normal month has.

my yearly cost (1482.50 x 12) = 17790 dollars. there are 365 days in a year. which means it costs me 48.74 cents a day for my rent and bills. (student loans are not included in any of this as i pay them directly, not thru a third party).

28 days x 12 months = 336 days. so 365 days - 336 days = 29 days.
29 days x $48.74 cents = $1,413 this in just one year of doing this im a month ahead of paying my rent and bills and i started out a month ahead. thus two months ahead and at the end of this yearly lease i should be three months ahead.

*rob*

August 4, 2011 5:05 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
also take into consideration there are 26 pay periods in a year so that's another one month ahead, so by the end of this year i should be 4 months ahead in bills and rent

I fear it will take a month or more to re-educate my son to unlearn the bad habits he picked up from them.

I think I understand rob's system. It's not one I would use or advise for others, but I can see how it would work as a system of self-enforced discipline. The rates you can get on low balance savings accounts are so low, the lost interest factor is very close to zero.

dibs, any more details on the functions not working? Is it consistent or intermittent? Any error messages or other odd behavior combined with them not working.

Brownstoner reader: DIBS, I never registered under the new system. Me and people like me are the problem with brownstoner, not the OT

Ah ha! Finally, some one to blame! : P

Well I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who didn't understand rob's system. Although I still wouldn't take my own financial advice :)

*rob's* system simplified:

Month 1 : pays rent
Month 2 : pays rent
Month 3 : pays rent plus some money towards month 7
Month 4 : pays rent
Month 5 : pays rent
Month 6 : pays rent plus some money towards month 7
Month 7 : rent paid from previous accumulated credit but he continues to pay so now he's ahead for month 8.
etc.
etc.

Apparently so! ; ) Those naughty naughty people who did not re-register! For shame!

I poosted over there today -- to some poor kid whose laptop got rained on by a leak
and he is having a nervous breakdown about getting money for his laptop and he
got excited with his landlord who said he wanted him to move. So he has a destroyed
laptop, feels scared, has his stuff under a tarp, is sleeping in the living room and has
no idea what his rights are. I told him to try to calm down. Vinca told him to go to Housing
Court for advice. Some people said he was a troll and a wuss but I am sure he was for real.

I also responded to the article on Phillip Kellogg since I have a vested interest in the FAB, but no
response from him. I guess it is not interactive. Oh well. I'll call FAB directly.

I'm heading out the door and down Atlantic now.

Hope to see all you pathetic losers there.

See you there, Scott. Sounds like you need some decompression time, too. This will be just what the doctor ordered. : )

1. I didn't take Bensons joke to be racist. Just the opposite. Bad fiscal policy is bad policy - has nothing to do with the color of your skin.

2. The stock market will arise like a Phoenix from the ashes. I have been a net seller for the last three weeks - and did NOT buy today. It is foolhardy to jump in front of a train wreck, but also shortsighted to not recognize that opportunities are becoming compelling. Trading is an art.

3. I am on vacation in the Turks and Caicos and I am pissed that the stock market picked NOW to finally stop being so pitifully boring.
This is a great country - beautiful. crystal clear water, friendly locals, very low crime and a 3 hr direct flight from NYC.

Probably nobody will read my comment because you are all busy partying.
Hugs and Kisses to all, anyway.
