Cobble, we do not grow our own pickling cukes. He made 14 pints last weekend!!! We also do marmalade, red currant & rasp jam (from my own red currants) and dilly beans (my favorite).

DIBS, Yes, Picking up where we left off— (I had the stuck page thing, too. And then the phone rang.)
Wow! You guys are pretty heavily/seriously into this. I'm impressed!
Say, I'll trade you a jar of my friend's Calamondin Orange Marmalade for a jar of your Red Currrent & Rasp. You won't believe this stuff my friend makes...it tastes almost like Apricot.

Well he got started because our friends up in NH pickle and have been doing so for years. They have a massive garden and grow everything that they pickle and it was their dilly beans that set us onto this.

Unfortunately, between needing more watering and weeding attention, my Bucks garden has become a bit too much to manage especially since when I get there I gust want to relax and eat and drink. It'll have to wait until i retire to really get going.

It's a great thing to do. I've only ever made a jar of this or a jar of that jam, and never tried pickling.

Gardening on that scale is WORK! I had a small garden in my previous life with my ex, and that took a bunch of work in the Spring, and good piece of almost every weekend in the summer. Excellent thing to have for your retirement, it'll keep you off the sauce! : P

Probably true, pb. My tomatoes didn't do well here this year. I bring them up from Bucks every Monday morning and I buy them locally down there, very good, very cheap.

That said, my fig tree here has >100 figs this year and that is well worth it. But it's a tree, doesn't need any attention except a bit of fall pruning that takes maybe 15 minutes.

Cobble, I think the quality and taste of homemade preserves is MUCH better than anything you can get out there with the exception of jams and jellies. Certainly our bread and butter pickles and definitely our dilly beans are. And yes, they make great and inexpensive gifts.

Also, in the right location, usually resort towns, "homemade" preserves can be a good business. I see lots of small shops set up on the Cape and they do a very good business selling jams & jellies at quite high prices. it helps to have a local favorite fruit which, in this case, is Beach Plum Jelly and is fairly unique.

BR...fig trees don't need pairs t0 fruit. Yes it's in bed Stuy. Last year (it's second year) was the first year I got fruit and there might have been 20 maybe. this year it's covered with fruit. I actually had 4 of them come extremely early and they were HUGE and deliscious. The rest look to maybe ripen in a few weeks and I hope to hell it's not when I'm on vacation the last week of August and first week of Sept.

Cobble, you probably passed by the other Iberostar on the way to Playa that we passed by as well. That one is huge as it holds a huge golf course and has 5 hotels in one location. The one I linked to is a smaller Iberostar in a private community right in the town of Playa del Carmen. The community sort of looks like Beverly Hills (Almost like you're in California somewhere and not Mexico).

I didn't go to Tulum or anywhere else really as I just wanted to lay on the beach or by the pool and sip mojitos all day long. We did go into town of Playa del Carmen a couple of times just to stroll around but that's about it.

I will comment and read the Forum though as I learned a lot of things from there in the past couple of years and I do enjoy helping others on the forum as well. a bunch of people have used my contractors since I referred them on there and were very happy with the work and I helped a couple of smaller co-op members who read brownstoner but never comment with lobby and roof/brick pointing questions over emails. Although I think it was handled poorly, I don't think he "spit in our face." Time will tell whether the decision proves to be a bad one or not. I think a confluence of issues arose, primarily the fact that the site wasn't working well and a lot of posters disappeared and that contributed to his state of mind and how he dealt with it, which many were upset with.

What there should have been was better policing of the OT with some specific warnings issued and I think it would have cleaned itself up.

That said, it's done and this place is much better.

On a related note, a hot sex session with a guy spitting in my face is something I find a real turnon sometimes!!!!! Just FYI.

Ah, yes, Playacar. We drove over there one day to pick someone up. It feels VERY Beverly Hills. If you go again, I'll look up the name of the tour guy we used. He takes nice small groups of people down to Tulum, Punta Allen and a couple cenotes, which are really fun. (He also does other trips.) And the beach over on Punta Allen is — not to be believed never seen anything like it drop dead gorgeous. I wanted to just stay there for the rest of my life.

But they don't have wi-fi, so I came back! ; )

I find the Forum to be of limited use. I joined Angie's List a few months ago, and it is a MUCH better service than the Forum (though admittedly it does not cater to questions regarding brownstones). And he should have, at that moment, realized it was an extreme action and reached out to DIBS, Biff, CGar, Arkady, Me, Snappy, somebody, anybody to try to see if there could be some resolution to the issue that didn't include the Nuclear Option which he chose.

Snappy & I were discussing things we could do here such as a Forum. Also a "Capabilities" section in which people could announce their strengths & solicit business or exchange services among the group (e.g. bake a cake in return for fix a leak - not dibs-type exchanges.)
While this server is good & the site is really terrific, I wondered if we should switch to something like Go Daddy which supports those kinds of things. If 2 dozen of us pitched in $20 each we could get a 2-year contract & let them work out the logistics of whatever ideas we came up w/. (With the expert help of Scott, Cobble, Bxgrl, etc. needless to say.)

Regarding the Forum, it really helped me beyond measure. Sometimes just the sharing of experience is great.
I had a lot of challenges with my old brownstone. And so much of what I learned I got from the Forum. There
are special tradesmen who do specific things unique to brownstones and what the sense of community did was
to develop relationships with people who you trust. For example, yente now rh of reclaimed home I got to know
through the Forum. She has renovated a lot of places with her structural engineer husband. She is cheap (ok, frugal,
and she knows her stuff. EVERYTHING trust me that she has told me has been right on and she has steered me toward
tradesmen who are much cheaper and better than everyone else. Bob Marvin has given me a lot of great general
advice. I got invaluable help from Dibs. And then after I went through this crazy, 1st time, experience I really got a
lot of pleasure and satisfaction by making my experience helpful to others. This has nothing to do with Mr. B. Except that
he created the structure. I wonder if the Forum is reproducible here....

Kens;

Here's the deal with Angie's List:

a) it costs $39/year to join. That alone will take care of alot of the trolls.
b) all comments are reviewed by their staff before they are posted.
c) contractors are given a grade based on the composite of their reviews.
d) they do not accept advertising from contractors. They will allow contractors who receive a grade "A" or "B" from the reviews to advertise "Specials" in which they offer special deals to Angie's List members. The special deals more than make up for the $39 fee. For instance, I just signed up for a deal where I get 8 man hours of a company that removes wallpaper and preps the wall, for $199 (plus tax).
e) the individual reviews usually discuss the price they paid, which is very helpful. You can click on a reviewer's profile and see how critical they are in general (I.e. how they score in general).

I have alot more confidence in this system than a forum that is completely open on the internet.

I think this is a good thing to discuss further. I'm happy to help proj. manage, if consensus us reached to go that way. It might take some of the burden off BHS and bxgrl who are doing the actual build out (I'm just helping bxgrl with little details), and free up bxgrl just to work on cool graphics which she's so great at. And BHS does have a "real job"! I'd like to look at some Go Daddy sites to see what they offer, and how much the look and feel, etc can be customized.

Cobble- there are a couple of better hosts than godaddy actually but I'll email yo later about them. Drupal actually supports a lot more features than are presently here- cgar, scott and I are researching them but the thing about using a platform like Drupal is that a site like what you're talking about would have to be a cms. So What- since you don't like drupal, what's your suggestion?

What we really need is to decide how we want to structure the site- that's a conversation for all of us to have. YOu can add comments on the site building page so we can have all your suggestions in one place. So 1. Structural content, and 2. Platform.

Personally I think a cms type- like drupal or joomla- is a better way for us to go. It makes ti easier for a number of users to add content and have some control. Plus we can also have static pages if we need them. So first thing is to decide what kind of site we want and what the ground rules should be.

On posting on Brownstoner: this is one issue where I agree with The What. Our posts add value to Brownstoner's content. He makes money from our ideas and writing, quite literally. Why should I give that away for free, especially to a person who insults us?

I'd rather put that energy into posting and creating content for Lifeinbkln.com, and helping the site become more fun and useful--for us.

Why I'm I doing this??? Let's go!
"Personally I think a cms type- like drupal or joomla- is a better way for us to go."
Yes Bxgrl if your building a 960 grid ebsite. People only use Drupal or Joomla to build commerce sites, not a forum CMS.
If you want just a CMS use Wordpress or my ************ Forum
Bxgrl trust Drupal is not the why to go!

hey plusas!

I echo the positive sentiments about the stoner forum... has been a big help to me for reno advice and dealing issues as a newbie landlord. I'm 99% sure I'm going to use a flooring vendor that DIBS recommended, it's where I found my excellent architect and dona in particular has had some sage advice about tenant issues.

on the subject, since the migration to lifeinbk would people prefer we maintain tradition and keep RE related questions off the OT? I see that there's a category set up for this, but no one has used it yet...

One last thing!! I built a complete forum and beg people to use it!

On the forum I had.

The Open Thread
The Lounge
Restaurant Reviews
Real Estate section (Buying, Selling and renting)
A Octagon (To handle fights)
A Gay section (No bullshit)
And much more

You would think "Hey like me try it and see what's going on over there" but, no.
The funny this is if today Brownstoner open the OT, ya'll be be there is seconds.
That's why I don't take anyone here seriously anymore...

Asking out of sheer ignorance. Once a site is up & running can it pretty much just cruise along or does someone have to monitor it? (That's assuming, of course, that offensive posts can be deleted by users.)

omg, no WONDER we are broke!

"The veteran benefits can, to some, be worth way more than just loans being paid for or the GI Bill. It's an investment really. My son's college tuition costs will now be taken care of due to the Hazlewood Act. For me, that alone was worth it. No telling what college will cost when it is his time. Plus I love the fact that the Post 9/11 GI Bill along with Pell Grant money has paid me enough for school, books, and housing to have enough left over to go to Paris, London, Amsterdam, Yellowstone twice, New York, Washington, DC, and soon-to-be Disney World later this year with my son. Not too shabby at all"

I have a file of info that "might be useful sometime" that I saved from 'Stoner but a lot of it is years old & probably out of date. Maybe What, if you're feeling generous and in a pleasing disposition you could show bxgrl how to upload all of them, even the xxx rated ones!!!!!!

There is room in the world for more than one site that's Brooklyn specific. There are already quite a few, some good, some not so. This is the only one that I'm aware of that strives to be such a cooperative space. Most blogs are the efforts, and focus, of one person and their interests. I don't count sites like Brooklynian because that's a message board, not a blog.

The good thing is that all of the different interests of the readers: cooking, gardening, renovation, home decor, historical stuff, neighborhoods, recreation, etc, etc, can be divided up, and everyone who is interested can take their specialty or specialties, under their wing, and not try to be a one person, all things to all people maniac.

I don't see us as a real estate blog. Brownstoner does that well, and that's what people go there for. But he was never really all that interested in lifestyle, or some of the other things we want to do. Perfect. There should be no hard feelings, and everyone is happy.

Instead of waiting around for apologies, offer thanks, instead. Thanks for giving a talented group of people an incentive to create something new. Thanks for making them/us realize that getting kicked from the nest is the best way to learn how to fly. Thanks for bringing us together in the first place, still a remarkable feat in a city of over 8 million people. Thanks for giving some of us a chance to tune our voices, and sing. Don't waste time or energy being angry or hurt. Move on, grow, and hopefully prosper.

That's my Oprah moment for the day. Carry on.

The ability to block someone doesn't necessarily mean you're blocked from posting. Some sites give you the ability to block someone in your personal view. You can do that on FB- choose to not show comments from a particular person in your news feed.

Montrose;

I am not waiting around for an apology. As Cobble said, I doubt that it will happen, and I'm not holding my breath. My only point is that I will not post on a commercial web-site in which the proprietor shows such contempt for some his most loyal followers. If that means that I won't post on Brownstoner again, so be it. If Mr. B. doesn't think we're worth an apology, so be it. On to better things.

Love the back splash thingy, as well as the magazine holder. One for a quick shower, the other for leisurely soaks. The British are so civilized!

My friend in London was renting a flat in one of the narrowest houses I've ever seen. The space planning in there was amazing. Everything had a place, and it felt so spacious. Especially since he had an attached greenhouse conservatory, which became the dining room. I still want to recreate that somehow, somewhere.

THL,

Nice to see you. Haven't had a chance to tell you, in the last few days. Glad all is well.

The Newburgh house is great. There's a lot of wonderful stuff outside of New York. As more and more people get forced out of the city, because of the expense of living here, there will be more "ex-pats" moving upstate. It's sad that one can't live where they choose, and where they could afford to, before, but on the other hand, new adventures in new places are a good thing as well.

And the sink to complete the picture. The house is Edwardian & the garden runs down to the Thames. Originally the owners would take a boat from Parliament to home - the door that fronts on the street was the tradesman's entrance. There wasn't indoor plumbing when the house was built so the fixtures are Victorian. The wooden shutters in the windows are similar to those in brownstones here but don't have louvers. There's medallion on the back of the house that was proof of insurance - neighboring houses have different ones depending on what company they subscribed to.

Hiya Montrose!

It's true, hence my moving to J.C.

Isn't it a beautiful home? I particularly just liked that it was a community effort. They all care so much for their homes and the neighborhood that they didn't want to see this one fall by the wayside. It was a win win for everyone, neighbors, local craftsman who needed the work etc. While they didn't do a completely historical restoration they took the time to preserve the original details, of which there were many. Smart move. Well done.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:

So the other day i posted about this unassuming food cart I found a block away that had mexican food. I had the tacos, beef, freshly grilled and they were quite good and definitely suthentic.

Today I got the burrito...$5.95 and about a pound and a half!!!! it'really great. Their hot sause is just the right amount of hot. The beef is steak and although not top of the line is perfectly acceptable.

Now for the important parts:

1. i did not suffer any intestinal discomfort from the tacos the first day
2. The owner is this barrelchested guy with big arms, drool worthy but a bit of a "butterface." The guy doing the cooking is cuter but doesn't have the "brick shithouse" type body that the other guy has.

For the record, I don't care if he makes fun of me. I can take it. But he posted racially charged pictures, not pictures of funny animals, or anything else. I do not want to log on here and see "funny" pictures with stereotypes of any racial, ethnic, or religious group used to prove a point, poke fun, or be used in a derisive way against someone. It's not cool, and makes all of us unwilling co-conspirators if we tolerate it in the name of "free speech" or "free expression". It's really a shame that we can't all be adult enough to respect certain lines that shouldn't be crossed, and most of us can do that. Some of us are incapable, so rules must be made. That doesn't make us nannies, or hall monitors. It makes us civilized members of an on-line community that we are trying to grow.

Hey Everyone!
Not sure if anyone is still on posting - but I can't believe the OT is dead! - wow, I checked last week after 2 months of not going on Brownstoner only to find it was put to rest. Am thrilled to have found you all - I think this is a better site and perhaps a new site will be born and gain the popularity that Brownstoner once had. Brownstoner isn't as interesting as it once was and I think it was time for a change....

dibs,

My theory is simple enough, as most theories are.
It does explain, however, many of the actions we are observing in our government today. From the idea that spending more money we don't have can somehow improve our financial predicament or the retention/promotion of individuals in high positions who are simply incompetent.

Theory of Causal Attenuation:
The ability to distinguish cause and effect relationships in economic/political/social endeavors is inversely proportional to one's affinity for Marxist theory.

In effect, the more one gives credence to the belief that man made societal structures can be neatly managed as a collective the less anchored in mathematical ideas of cause and effect one becomes.

This just came across my Bloomberg.....

Young Gay Men Have More Than 25% of New HIV Cases
Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- The number of new HIV infections has surged among young, black homosexual males even as the overall spread of the virus that causes AIDS stabilized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The number of U.S. residents who became infected with HIV increased by an annual average of 50,000 from 2006 to 2009, the agency said in a report published today on the website of the journal PLoS One. New infections among black men ages 13 to 29 who have sex with men jumped to 6,500 in 2009, a 48 percent increase from 2006 and the only statistically significant change in any segment of the population, according to the CDC.

13-29??????????????

I also found it interesting that only black men had a statistically significant rise. i was under the impression that ALL young men were taking more risk.

I'm hoping that NYC actually has lower numbers because I do see a lot of advertising geared to young blacks but elsewhere throughout the country where there is hardly ANY education has gotta be bad.

girls 15-19 KNOW for a fact that if they pop out a kid they will get nearly free housing, insurance, food, etc etc. they are so run down and defeated in life to begin with by that age that having a kid for them for the measly benefits is the path of least resistence. which is sad. which is why poverty in this country does nothing but breed more poverty. there's also no way to fix this.

I worried that my windshield would break, and on the Northern State Parkway/Grand Central, cars were pulling over, especially under the underpasses. until it finished. I drove at least 10 miles with continuous hail. Very nerve-wracking to hear it banging on the roof of the car.
August 3, 2011 4:22 PM - More4Less
midwest occasionally have softball size hail. I imagine one could get killed if one of them lands on our head

August 3, 2011 4:27 PM - dibs
No idea, m4l. As far as I'm concerned, you never should have been out of the market. market timing is something that no one gets right.

It also depends what you want to buy. Spivvy shit or strong dividend paying blue chips.

Low atmospheric pressures cause areas of the body that are sensitive to pressure to become sensitive.
The low pressure allows the synovial lining of joints to swell, for instance so those with arthritis can sense the weather as low pressure arrives.

is this true? i have a scar on my finger with nerve damage loss near it. was opening up a can as a kid and the can opener didnt get it all and i was impatient and hungry so pulled at the lid and sliced the tip of my pointer finger. probably should have gotten stitches for it? i kinda like it, there is no feeling on the actual scar (the rest of my finger is fine). i used to pick at it when i got nervous, still can pick it at it and get hard skin off of it (gross). for years i had a burn scar (of little circles) on my hand from a dryer. that sorta has gone away. on my leg i have a triangle from my "cutter" days. yes, i was one of those attention whore cutters back in the day.

BHI and Minard,
Get thee to Netflix and rent the BBC version of Evelyn Waugh's: Brideshead Revisited.

There's enough sartorial sense there to fill a book.
The acting is great, the story compelling and for hours you'll be transported to the 1920's-40's.

I vaguely remember Brideshead Revisited being popular on TV when I was a young kid, legion. The big house they usedas Brideshead is called Castle Howard, in Yorkshire. Of course lot of it was filmed at Christ Church, Oxford as well (Flyte's College; Ryder was at Hertford, Evelyn Waugh's college)

ha. i dont want to admit it, but you are right. i have two shirts from my grandfather that i wear a lot and still last and look decent, for over FIFTEEN years that ive had them and wash them in regular washers with my other ratty stuff. one is a hideous green turtleneck and the other is just a short sleeved blue shirt (not sure how else to explain it). im just not into fashion at all. especially gay fashion. i never made the switch over from dressing like a complete freak to dressing with "style" like most gay men have a tendency to do (i dont agree they do, but whatever). i also think the man makes the clothes and not the clothes make the man. i however jealously hate sometimes on the train when i see people so impeccibly dressed going to work.. winds up make me feel like a grimeball. if only VH1 would do a gay version of their show Charm School, i'd SO apply (i'd be the first one kicked off the show, but it'd still apply!) id be a good candidate for that. if youve never seen the show it's where they teach girls how to be proper as in not the grodie people they currently are.
monique was the host on season one, sharon osbourne season 2, and ricki lake season 3.
