I had a nice time at the Bronx Zoo with my family yesterday, but I am constantly having to adjust to the fact that my sister and her kids are not accustomed to walking any real distance.
My son is also starting to pick up a few bad habits from his cousins, most notably so far whining for junk food and sodas and expecting his demands to be met immediately.

However, we are still having a great time, and I'm glad they are here for another 2 days.

The vote in the Senate today shall pass rather readily,
for unlike the members of the House who are all up for
re-election next November, only one third of the Senate is “up” and
therefore only those members are in jeopardy of facing angry
constituents. The other 2/3rds of the Senate can vote rather safely in
favour of the legislation and will do so.

That said, the President’s support ratings are falling rather sharply.
The latest Gallup poll has President Obama’s approval rating at a new low: 40% over the
weekend. Too, his disapproval rating is now up to 52%, an all time high.

Will be out all day so have fun.

Saw the approval ratings. Also saw polls where over 70% of the populace thinks the Democrats made more of an effort to resolve the issue than the Republicans. Boehner's approval ratings also fell. I think the President will recover because he can certainly point ot the fact that he did his damndest to get a compromise and the Tea Party people tried to hold everyone hostage, and willing to watch the country go down in flames Think we are going to see a lot of buyer's remorse about those folks. several republican representatives complained that many of the freshman don't understand how things work in Washington, nor do they understand economics. They are getting deadly radiation readings at Fukushima, something that had not occured previously. By deadly it means that it would kill someone in 2 weeks if exposed. Also, it may actually be quite higher because it read the highest possible amount on the geiger counters that the robots were using.

The economy is in pretty bad shape. The forecasts my firm receives from our customers keep getting revised downward.

Also, while Manhattan and Brownstone Brooklyn have held up pretty well over the past few years due to the abundance of financial workers, the same cannot be said of the NYC metro area in general. Yesterday I had to go visit a company in a Bergen County suburb, and I was taken aback at how threadbare the area had become, and this is not the first time I've encountered such a scene. One of my co-workers lives in Putnam County, and her husband has not been able to find work in 2 years. They are throwing in the towel and selling their house, but the problem is that 5 other homes are for sale on their block.

I agree with DIBS. Four more years of Obama will be a disaster. And I'm speaking from a lefty point of view. The left has sat on its hands for the last two and a half years while Obama's been doing his "I'm Ronnie Reagan" the great compromiser bullshit act. At least if there's a Repub president, the Democrats might start acting like an opposition party again.

The senate is due to vote on this thing at noon. We have tried the "spend beyond your wildest means" routine for about ten years now and it has not worked out all that great. Maybe a little austerity will be just what is needed right now. No matter how screwed we are, other economies are screwed even worse, well, with the possible exception of Switzerland.

Boerumresident: I don't have time today to linger here, but that's crazy about "spending beyond our wildest means" - we've only been spending signifcantly more than we have taken in revenue. Since we currently take in much less revenue as a percentage of GDP than most peer countries (third lowest in the OECD, next to Mexico and Chile), I don't see how our spending even comes close to exceeding out means.

"Since we currently take in much less revenue as a percentage of GDP than most peer countries (third lowest in the OECD, next to Mexico and Chile), I don't see how our spending even comes close to exceeding out means."

Boerumresident,
This is the type of statement that causes one to realize how much the major media has failed in its duty to keep the public informed.

You mention the revenue to GDP ratio as if it's just a simple matter of taxing more to increase revenue.
NOT!
What your statement fails to take into account is the United State's role in the world and how it got there. By removing the incentive to work, a government increases dependency.
I assume you are comparing revenue/GDP ratios of the USA (approx. 27%) to those of leading EU nations like Germany and France (approx. 40-45%).
Neither Germany nor France hold the position of the largest and strongest economy in the world. There's a reason for that. For in that 10-20 percentage point difference lies the rub. The difference between a semi-socialized nanny state and an economy at full speed. An economy driven by the citizen's motivation to move forward.

Europe is old, that's true, and perhaps they've settled into that position of comfortable subservitude to a larger government (though these days even that isn't working so well if you look at their debt problems). We, as Americans have not. At least many that I've spoken to and many that have been voting recently.

The real question is, are we prepared to take a step down in our standard of living and give up the will to stay on top? Maybe we are too lazy to stay competitive, will ours be the generation to throw in that towel?

I suggest you look up this ratio:
Debt/GDP and its relationship to sovereign debt delemmas around the globe.
August 2, 2011 12:56 PM - dibs

In reality, back in 1933, the majority of the population did not turn in their gold.

There's noe rational justification for it now, and people are less stupid. Besides, the US governament already has the largest hoard of gold in the world.

If there was an issue with the US government's balance sheet all they actually need to do is mark their gold to market instead of carrying it on the books at $31

Boerumresident: Legion -- I don't get the NOT! More taxes equals more revenue. The laffer curve is only going to kick in when your marginal rates are well above 60-70%.

And the debt/GDP issue is only an issue because we have so much debt by failing to raise enough revenue in the first place. Back when the debt began falling (post Gulf War), the revenue/GDP ratio was a little over 28%. I am not saying that we need to get to French levels of revenue (Germany is only the mid- to high 30's BTW) in order to take care of any long term financial issues -- but it's foolish to assume that you can be the pre-eminent country on the world on a shoestring.

Every picture and moving image that "The What" has posted.
August 2, 2011 4:01 PM - Legion
Just putting this out there for those of you following the mundane intrigues of the ongoing OT struggles:

1. I assume Mr. B had it in mind to cut the OT for some time. Not a judgement, only a cold and uninterested observation at this point.

2. Kens just posted to a merry group of anonymous douchebaggery on BHI's blog.

3. BHI seems nice enough but the timing of his appearance on the OT seems oddly coincidental to me considering the fact that a site called Brooklyn Open Thread is up and running just in time for the en masse exodus of the rag tag group of posters on the OT.

Which leads me to a simple question, how long has the Brooklyn Open Thread been functional and does BHI have a direct link to Mr. B in some way.

I realize this could all be my conspiratorial mind working but it does seem odd given all the invective involved from "anonymous" posters and a bunch of new characters suddenly coming out of the wood work, some even go so far as to post as counter points to well known posters.

I was on Brownstoner from the very beginning. Before the relaunch I was "bheightsaph". It is not like I just showed up last week. Why was I so comfortable interacting with the PLUSA posters? Well, because I have been reading your damn comments for years. Bashing you? Maybe it is due to my unconventional upbringing, but I find it comforting to speak in a satirical fashion. I dress like it is 1902. I talk like a Cecil Beaton wannabe and I happen to enjoy interacting with other Brownstoners. I take the limitations off my blog because you ask me to or "we're outta here." I have run out of ways to appease you and I am beginning to wonder why I care so much in the first place. When I find something fun I am more than willing(and able) to waste time, but when the fun stops and I keep going I look like a total fool.

Oh, no. Being thought of as one of those two is the worst insult I have had in ages. I am not one of the Winklevi. I am older and I don't have to sue a Harvard drop-out to afford Lanvin.

I saw it. I was tempted to comment, but decided against it.

BHIiii, What's the matter, kiddo? I'm loving your blog. You're highly amusing. No worries. You fit in fine, my dear! Come to Montero's, we'll drink and laugh a lot!
August 2, 2011 5:11 PM - WonTon
BHiii, your site is very funny. But this site is working better for us as a discussion forum. And it's set up to be a community blog, so we can all help create the content and add posts eventually. Your site is very much of a solo effort.

Personally, I think it would be great if you felt comfortable enough to port your talents over here and contribute to the group effort of Lifeinbklyn. Like slopefarm says, having OTs on two different sites is too confusing, and it dilutes the brand.

lol,
this is like that episode of the Twilight Zone where everyonoe in a small town is worked up about Martians showing up to take over.
Everyone gets paranoid and tears the town apart.
In the end they find no Martians but the guy at the local diner turns out to be an alien from Venus.

BHI,
We know men are from Mars and women are from Venus,
but there's nothing like joining the crew for a PBR to ease the concerns.

Anonymous: Cobble you are a dear but I felt the bite today and not just the bark, you all are so extremely entertaining.

Anonymous, sincere apologies if we wrongly thought you were someone else. There is someone who posted with us for many years, using more log-ins than any of us could count, and she became increasingly not nice to a number of people here, so we are wary of her "return", so to speak.

BHI, sincere apologies to you as well. You are very welcome here. As I said, you're very funny, and it's great that you have your own blog. And we really hope you'll come to Montero's with us on Thursday. I've been told, on occasion, that I'm oversensitive, and I just found the anonymous comments on your blog, by people whom we don't know and who don't know us, hurtful.
August 2, 2011 5:22 PM - WonTon
It's alright dear Cobble, I've just borrowed some of DIBS's vaseline and smeared it all over the lens. You'll look gaw-geous!

As it happens, DIBS does NOT have sole control to delete posts. There are a small number of us who have "The Power". It just happened that he chose to use it, at that moment, on you, sadly. Possibly thinking you were this other poster.

i bought hot jamaican peppers at the supermarket earlier. the look like the typical red/green/orange/yellow generic peppers but they are super tiny and cute. im not sure what to do with them tho.

August 2, 2011 7:36 PM - minard lafever
rob, what makes you say that?
August 2, 2011 7:37 PM - Donatella
Yeah, be careful *rob*. That hot oil stays on your hands and you don't want to
get it in your eyes or any other delicate body part. Also, be careful how you eat it.
If you bite it like an ordinary green pepper, you will really understand pain.
August 2, 2011 7:37 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
RF, oh believe me i know first hand not to do that. i put in contacts after cutting up peppers a while back, fell to floor screaming in agony and pain. i accused my exboyfriend at the time of poisoning my contact lense solution. i didnt put two and two together that it was the hot pepper chili on my hands. the thing is i even washed my hands before putting my contact lenses in!!!

*rob*

August 2, 2011 7:40 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
cobble, i read some of the posts over on brownstoner today and crownmolding was pimping the exact same things in prospect heights that 11217 always does, even posting eater links which he always does, and in general being a little beotch, which he always does. it's definitely him.

*rob*

August 2, 2011 7:41 PM - rf
you could wear gloves when cutting them up. If you have ground beef or chicken or turkey and you're browning it, cut up the peppers and add them in. What were you thinking when you bought them?
August 2, 2011 7:41 PM - Arkady
If your stove has a pilot light, put the peppers on a baking tray & leave them in the oven until they dry out & use them as a condiment. If not, sew them w/ needle & thread & ditto.
August 2, 2011 7:41 PM - minard lafever
okay so what am i gonna do with all these peppers then?

-you're not really soliciting suggestions are you?
August 2, 2011 7:43 PM - cobblehiller
rob, BE CAREFUL, those peppers can BURN THE CRAP OUT OF YOU. You can cut a little part of one into teeny tiny slivers and use in your dinner.

Take the rest, bake them in the oven, then put them whole into a jar with some oil, olive or otherwise, to preserve them. Then stick that in your fridge. And you can eat bits of them whenever you want. Just watch for mold.
August 2, 2011 7:44 PM - gay smurf hoodlum
it didnt look like he was trying to hide it or anything. someone should flat out ask crownmolding and see what he says.

On 40th St. between Madison and Fifth, close to the Mid-Manhattan Library is a magnificant
store called Sam's 99 cent store. It is absolutely mind boggling how much great stuff you
can get for 99 cents. I draw the line on aspirins, bubble baths, medicines, vitamins. Anything
that goes internal. But everything else is wonderful!!!

ooooh, snappy, I made a mistake. The name on 40th is JACKS. It is probably the same chain as the one
