"The What" loves to eat ramen noodles
With big chunks of miniature poodles
Let's eat it up now
While we can still afford chow
The dollar is worth less than doodles

Greetings everyone.

I am enjoying my 2 minutes of quiet until the rest of my full apartment wakes up and we start having breakfast before heading out to a day at the Bronx Zoo.

Having a good vacation with my sister and her family, but it will be nice to have my normal life back when they fly away Thursday afternoon.

GM What: I'll definitely pass on the message.

GM bxgrl: The posting issue seems to be more than disqus; it's the blocking of scripts I believe. For whatever reason, this seems to be one of the few sites I can still post on. My knowledge of programming is about as strong as my knowledge of electrical wiring and camping, which is non-existent, so I don't know what makes this site different.

CGar;

I recently saw it in a theater (Film Forum) and I came to appreciate in a new light. When I saw it as a kid, I loved the spectacle of "apes in charge". Seeing it this time, I came to appreciate that the dialogue and writing is first-rate, which of course you would expect from Rod Serling. And yes, the final scene is still one of the greats of all time, and haunting.

Ever since SyFy ran a Twilight Zone marathon a month or so ago, I've DVRed and watched a ton of episodes. Now there is talk of senate filibuster. Some Dems are wondering if default may not be the lesser of two evils. The US markets are sensing that all is not well on the Hill.

dave, there's no new Brownstoner OT. I think benson is gleefully anticipating the first dust-up in the LIB OT.

That said, there is a new "housekeeping" thread over there, which, if I'm not blocked is the perfect thread for me to post a link here and a Montero's invite. And, if I'm not banned, that will surely do it.

It was out of the blue - for us, THL. And this after he used all of us as beta testers before (and, frankly, after) the disastrous re-launch. And, he handled it in the nastiest possible way, by basically blaming us for the site's problems and low traffic, accusing us of being clubby, cliquey and insidery and of intimidating lurkers and new posters from posting.

A former regular poster (non-PLUSA) who emailed me yesterday said she thinks Mr. B saw the OT as compeitition because that was the only thread generating any significant posts. But, he never asked us to increase our posts in other threads - which we would have done - nor did he ever ask us to tone down our rhetoric.

Hi THL!

I can't comment on JC, but one thing I have noticed the last few times I've been in Jersey is that the roads have gone to hell. NJ used to have great roads, even up to maybe 10 years ago. Now they are ill-maintained and the landscaping has gone to pot. You can't even read some of the roadside signs, as the (damn) quick-growing sumacs get in their way. Also, the amount of litter on the roads is getting worse, blocking the sewer grates.

I can understand why people are upset at Bstoner. Calling his most dedicated posters "increasingly toxic" was not nice. Nonetheless I wish him well and if nothing else there are the Montrose pieces, which are so great.
It was a business decision and I think everyone has shown the capacity of moving forward. It is like being evicted and them finding a better apartment.

The other thing that amazes me about Mr. B. is that he never tapped into the talents of his followers, except for Montrose. Look at what Wonton put together over the weekend, and we're talking about more user-generated content. Why didn't he set-up one day a week for such input? Remember how the site came alive during that one week where he put Montrose at the helm?
August 1, 2011 11:03 AM - bfar
"I told him not to use *that* word around his grandma, she'd get upset."

That's a huge hurdle over here. Although I can behave myself around my (more conservative) inlaws, there's just no way I'm going to be able to clean up my act consistently at home. I'm afraid there's gonna be a lot of parent-teacher conferences for me.
August 1, 2011 11:04 AM - Donatella
Re Mr. B., I was seriously steamed but not staying mad. Not going back either. Good luck
to him. This is going to be Business Practices 101 for him. Maybe I can put together a proposal
for him, outlining some business development and marketing basics to help him get back in the
saddle. Of course, I gave a huge amount of information and advice to him already for free, but
now I would be charging. If he is lurking (sure that he is) here is the Cliff Notes version:

1) Get a vision, a brand, a business plan and stick with it.
2) Stay current. Wake up and smell the coffee.
3) Pay attention to your business. Don't phone it in, don't go on auto pilot.
Don't go on mental vacations for two years.
4) Figure out the whole bread/butter thing. Identify WHO your customers
are. Recognize where value lies.
5) Then MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF ALL, once you are a pretty good grip on
reality, DON"T kick these people in the teeth, insult them, or treat them like
imbeciles.

Ok, now I am reallly done. Mr. B. that's for free again. If you want any real
business advice contact me at donatellaoffortgreene at hotmail. Now I am
completely finished.

I don't think Stoner has sold the site, although he would probably love to. But he may be winding it down. Unless real estate picks up there is not much excitement. Houses stay on the market for six, eight, twelve months and are then pulled off. It's like watching grass grow.
Occasionally a richie rich buys a house in Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights for three million or more. Yawn! The Forum is where the action is. A lot of people own a lot of old houses and they ALL need some work.

There are 1,167 sale ads (* $25 * 12 = $350,000 annualized) and there are 864 Rent ads (*$10 * 12 = $103,680). That's an annualized run rate of $453,000 without including the advertising. yes, brokers might get some discount but it's still a lot of money

Today, I have two farewell parties to attend. One is moving back to Arizona and another is moving to B'klyn (which isn't so bad, B'klyn is still NYC but still). This is the fifth farewell party I've been invited to in three weeks. So, I sat down and made a list of people I've befriended over the years who are no longer in Manhattan and it's 30 people already. Don't get me wrong, it's a good move for them but I'm sad for myself because goodbye's get me down.

i went to that one.. hmm that sounds like an okay deal. i bought a taco and i thought it was mad overpriced. it was also tiny as hell and had no flavor. and everyone that was working in there was like 11. totally bizarre. tacos made by 11 year old moonfaces is just wrong.

I don't want my taco made by a moonface. I want to see those nicely manicured brown Mexican fingers spreading that meat on top of those warm tortillas and then carefully rolling them up in their hot brown hands, touching evry last bit of it .

DIBS, the cost differential is huge man. I've looked into it. compliant trucks for NYC cost a ton more than trucks outside of NYC.
August 1, 2011 1:46 PM - Donatella
I got take out Mexican from a place on Franklin called Alcatraz.
Actually, I think they got the cooks from there. Chile con carne
had so much salt couldn't taste much anything else.

Question: Has anybody ever been stopped by cops in an unmarked car???
I was doing the old round the corner looking to park in front of my house
just after the street cleaners. Natch, no seatbelt or wallet. There is a
siren coming from somewhere.....it is from a brown Ford sedan. Out
come two cops, one wants to know about why no seatbelt. They certainly
look like cops. Where's your liscence? UH.... Well, I had the registration
in the glove compartment and did the whole whiney beggy smiley soo sorry
officer thing and they left me alone only to nab somebody the next second
--I think making a turn as the light turned.

What do you mean by "a ton." I know that fully compliant used trucks are available for $40-80,000
August 1, 2011 1:49 PM - Arkady
Dona - I got stopped for going around the block w/o seat belt once - I put it on now even if I'm only moving from one side of street to the other.
August 1, 2011 1:49 PM - dibs
dona, there was a situation not far from me in Bed Stuy about 2 years ago. I thinbk it was a domestic argument turned bad. I couldn't have believed all the different types of unmarked cars that showed up....SUVs, yellow cabs, etc, etc, etc

30 to 50k outside NYC and used ones can be had for 8 to 15k. that korilla type truck would be 100k or more
August 1, 2011 1:51 PM - Donatella
Yeah, Arkady, from now on, no more of that run out of the house with the keys thing to
move the car. I am not sure what the other guy did but he didn't get off so easy. The
cops were there for a long time.
August 1, 2011 1:52 PM - dibs

Absolutely right DeLepp. I love my books. I can see having readers for long trips away from home, plane rides, 3 months in a cabin in the woods, etc. but love having a physical book in my hand. As for larger reference books, "coffee table" books, art books, important works of non-fiction and fiction, etc. No way am I going to rely on a bunch of pixels on a small screen for that. Ditto for magazines. I also agree with Rob, that I spend too much time looking at screens already.

I have a couple of beautiful antqie books with the boards covered in tooled leather and marbled endpapers. The paper is a havy cream color and the type is a soft black. YOu can see where the press indents the paper, like an etching. You don't get that with an ebook. Not to say ebooks don't have their own pleasures but it is a very different experience.
August 1, 2011 3:55 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
I think the biggest problem the e-book makers will face is that the e-books themselves don't tend to cost much less than the physical hardcover version. When you are saving paper, ink, etc., there should be a serious discount and right now there isn't one on most popular titles.

The perfect book is a trade paperback with uncut page edges.

The problem with commentary on the future of books is that it's done by 9-to5 go-getters who don't have a lot of downtime themselves to read; ergo, no one reads, because they are the leading edge and interpret everything through their own experiences. Books are things non- mainstream people use: children, retired, out-of-work, the elderly, students.

For my reference books I still find that the printed word has more info in depth than quick search allows for & I can't afford to subscribe to services that have the books I own. For trash reading, I don't like ebooks because you can't lend/borrow them. On PaperbackSwap.com, I have sent out around 600 books in 2 or 3 years & received an equal number - all it costs is the postage to mail the book. It has saved me easily $1500. Additionally, you won't find serendipitous things to read left on stoops or stoop sales.

It's lovely, with colored illustrations that are animated. But that's loke a disney experience- they do all the imagining for you. So true. The best part of books is creating worlds within your head. That's one reason why when popular books are turned into movies, they never are as good as the book, no matter how good the movie is. Imagination can be as vast, or as limited as we are allowed to dream. That's why all those morons, and I use the term purposely, who don't let their children read Harry Potter, or fairy tales, or any fiction, are raising imagination-less drones. Really scary.

Kindle and such are good for traveling. I think. I don't have one. I don't have an iphone, and ipod, and ipad, either. I have a not so smart phone which lets me text and find emails if I really try. Am I a Luddite? I could get those things but I have
a computer with internet access and if I need to be reached right away, I have a phone and I can get texts. Writing in books helps me concentrate. I read all kinds of stuff on line but I so much more prefer having a book, magazine or a piece of paper to carry around. I have art books. I want them too. And I have books for which I have a sentimental attachment. I was at parents and they had a ton of books that I read, that I really liked. I thought hey, how the hell did they get all of these books? It is a "pocket" version and it weighs about 5 pounds. Some pocket I would need for THAT. Like
Mr. Greenjeans. I did the same thing to the 500 Spanish verbs. The cover no longer covers the guts
which fell out.
August 1, 2011 5:04 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
Yes, Snark, it's a beaut! That is modern done right - minimal and angular, but warm and inviting. I'd liven up the colors a bit here and there, but overall it's great.
August 1, 2011 5:05 PM - Arkady
I just rip little pieces of newsprint to stick in pages I want to go back to. That distinguishes the place keeping from my bookmark. Except for cookbooks, no spine cracking & no marking.
August 1, 2011 5:05 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
5lbs and pocket don't belong in the same sentence! helluva pocket indeed!
August 1, 2011 5:06 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
I could understand writing in a cookbook...sometimes you tweak something and wanna make the note right there where you'll always see it. But a regular book for reading enjoyment, no way Jose!
August 1, 2011 5:07 PM - cobblehiller
I destroy cookbooks. I'm bad. I ruin them. I'm much better with my other books, but I always get oil, egg or some damn thing on my cookbooks. I'm not a terribly neat cook.
August 1, 2011 5:08 PM - minard lafever
cobble, I did not know Norval Wight, he was quite elderly and moved to France years and years ago. However I did know Elliot Willensky very well. Unlike Wight, he passed away very suddenly while rather young.

Shit! I just drove through a Kansas-like hailstorm near the Nassau-Queens border. Golf ball-size hail. Did it rain in Brooklyn? It doesn't look like it.
August 1, 2011 5:10 PM - Donatella
The Spanish teacher found the dictionary hilarious. So did the rest of the
students. They would whip out their little electronic gadgets and I would
whip out this collection of pieces (complete with thick rubber band). I finally broke
down and bought one of those dictionaries.

I don't own any cookbooks. When I feel adventurous and want a new recipe, I either ask you ladies or just use one of the many recipe websites. I wonder how long until physical cookbooks become something hard to find in brick and mortar bookstores.

nothing like epicurious.com. I sometimes have my laptop up on my counter. That is obviously more dangerous

"cobble, I did not know Norval Wight, he was quite elderly and moved to France years and years ago. However I did know Elliot Willensky very well. Unlike Wight, he passed away very suddenly while rather young."

Norval White was very close friends with the parents of a very good/old friend of mine. They used to visit him at his home in France.

M.F.K.Fisher is someone you want to stretch out on the couch to read, not just use in the kitchen. There are others of that ilk. Also, I wouldn't risk an electronic gadget near me & a mixer full of liquids or a counter covered in flour.
August 1, 2011 5:17 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
Nah, laptop stays on the couch and I go back and forth from that to the kitchen counter, which in my apartment, is a whopping 5-6 steps!

OMG, check this out from Reuters. Wild boars are on a rampage in Central New York State,
attacking livestock, family pets and chasing down people. Apparantly they are hard to shoot. According to some official.

"We've shot them right square in the head and the bullet will glance off and they'll get up and go. Their skulls are so thick in the front, if you don't happen to hit it at a perfect 90 degrees, with the way their heads have that kind of curved shape, the bullet will glance right off," he added.

Good to know.

"U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn said being linked to President Barack Obama would be “like touching a tar baby” during an interview with a Denver radio station Friday about Obama's budget policies.

“I don’t even want to have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a tar baby, and you get it — you know, you’re stuck, and you’re part of the problem now, and you can’t get away,” Lamborn said. “I don’t want that to happen to us (Republicans), but if it does, or not, he’ll still get — properly so — the blame, because his policies, for four years, will have failed the American people.”

Though “tar baby” is defined in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as “something from which it is nearly impossible to extricate oneself,” it is also a derogatory term for blacks.

Dave called it right. they did get their act together on time. I had my doubts. The most incredible thing is that evidently the votes were coming in very slowly from the house floor and then Gabrielle Giffords shows up unexpectedly and voted aye. She looked frail but it was definitely her. After her vote a flood of votes came in and the bill passed. I think Giffords is remarkable and definitely the only politician in Washington to bring honor to the halls of Congress today.

Am thrilled to have found you all - I think this is a better site and perhaps a new site will be born and gain the popularity that Brownstoner once had.
