you think this would make it pass biff's work firewall?

I tested with javascript turned off, and everything worked fine.
There is no functionality that requires outside sites.
The domain name was registered less than 12 hours ago, so it should not be on any blacklists.

If this does nor work for Biff and others, I don't think anything will.

A problem with auto refresh is that it requires Javascript, which breaks things for people like Biff.

The advantage of a site like this over blogspot is that functionality can be added later, and we can test it to make sure it works for everyone.

DIBS, let folks congregate at the jackal blog now as there are lots of folks there - including newbies. we need to tinker with this a bit before rolling it out - unless you want to have premature release issues like Mr B did with his new site

I really need to get to housework before my sister gets here, but here I am...

The idea of this site is to give an idea of what options are out there beyond just a blogspot or similar page.
Everything can be customized or changed - some are trivial, some take a bit more work, but anything is possible.

I have made everyone who signed on so far a site editor, so you can add new main page posts if you have any great brooklyn topics you want to share.

This site rules.

Dave, I came back from Mexico to find out that the one I really wanted was bought the day before by someone else :o(. Should have just put an offer on it before I left but really wanted to take my parents up there first since they will be spending most time there during the summer with sister's kids.

Now I am going this weekend to look at one that's completely in need of reno (but has brand new foundation and fairly new 2 year old roof which is the most pricey stuff there). I am going to try to lawball them and maybe do the work on it myself but needed to run few things by you to be comfortable enough to put in the offer.

Biffers, never got your email. I used a travel agent but you can get exactly the same deals on expedia.com or hotels.com. I would just shop around there. I also use Kayak.com for cheap flights search. If you email me the dates you are looking into, I'll search around and email you back to link to the flight and hotel options.

Snappy, Kayak.com is by far the best for flights. It's the Google of travel sites. It basically has a very complex algorithms that searches all other travel sites and direct flight companies and picks the cheapest and gives you options (no fee or anything just redirects you to purchase from the cheapest site). It's really neat and I scored some really crazy great deals on there. Try it out.

Biff, the travel agent was very awesome but I had one small problem. She was really helpful and I never met her in person and did everything over the phone and all was good. They are legit agency and all but I come back from Mexico to find out someone tried to purchase stuff on the internet with my credit card (from clarks.com of all places) and the only person I gave that particular card number to in the past 3 months was her. I barely use that card, only for purchases like this. The fraud department caught on quick and going to investigate but it still kinda shocked me so I called the agency and they assured me that they deal directly with huge travel vendors and use internal software and never illegit internet sites to book the tours/travel. Frankly, I think their office PCs were/are hacked and they are not aware and they are a small business tour agency (maybe 4-6 agents or so). I know they wouldn't do that themselves since they came highly recommended from my other friends who use them for years so it's really your call. If you want to call her, her name is Simona and the number is 718-996-5086. Agency is called ATG Travel.

What- I have no doubts about your expertise as a webmaster. Or that it was beautiful. But if you want to know why people didn't go there, it's because of how you treat them. And I'm just one example. I don't want to be part of a group that spends all day slinging insults, posting boob and butt pictures, or being called a sandy v. If you want people to trust you and your site, you have to show you are worthy of being trusted.

And I do think it was nice that you reset up the beach and all- and I'm sorry you put in all that time and work. But in all honesty, based on our history, how comfortable do you think I'd be on your site?

I'm still undecided about posting back on Brownstoner. It may take awhile for the sting to wear off. I'm reading a little, here and there. It's a shame that Mr. B wasn't more communicative with us. Cobble, you Ex was that old or old-looking?
July 29, 2011 4:24 PM - Donatella
About Brownstoner, I like the forum. It is basically created by the participants and
it is helpful and there is a real community that can form around helping one another.
I haven't used it much lately, but I feel some connection to that. After the stun
effect wore off with that OT article he wrote, I thought wow.....he must be tired.
He must be frustrated, he must feel out of control of his own site, he must be worried,
he's probably struggling financially. And he must have been pissed off too, by the
criticism on all fronts. That is the only way I can explain the way he did what he did,
which was combo lashing out and illogical thinking.
July 29, 2011 4:25 PM - cobblehiller
I think the thing that is burning me the most right now, is that the End of the OT post wording opened us up to so much nastiness, which according to his words, he wanted to get away from. There were other NON-PLUSAs that were pretty nasty too. Why single us out like that? (I'm still hurt, obviously.)

I would chip in for the karaoke. I don't think CGar should pay for it all himself. Only thing to consider is maybe some PLUSAs think that will make the venue too loud. Personally, I'm all for the karaoke, but if only a small group are interested, we shouldn't bother. Thoughts all?
July 29, 2011 4:39 PM - Donatella
CGar, re paying for karaoke, I am fine with that.

BTW, I agree with jackal about using the hammer here judiciously, mostly for any post that reveals personal deets. Once we're sure this is our new playground and there's enough memory, I'll send an "all hands on deck" email to all the PLUSAs and regular posters for whom I have email addys, inviting them to join us here.

Maybe the manner in which it was handled was questionable, but at the end of the day, I think it has worked out best. This is a more sensible place for us to meet and we have a potentially great site on which to chat with easier posting and more bells and whistles and Mr. B got to get rid of the OT, which he wanted. Maybe it will end up being the wrong decision for him, but it was his decision to make. Win-Win.

July 29, 2011 5:18 PM - Donatella
Cobble re your comment on quality, agree. The way I think about it
too is that everything has changed since he started. His "brand" when he
started was as a scrappy little site which celebrated brownstone Brooklyn
and sort of mirrored his own odyssey with buying a ratty old building in
Brooklyn. There were houses listed and everyone was trying to buy something
so the comments were very educational, snarky, very open and helpful to
any one buying a house. Then he started talking more about the whole condo
development thing, and other info related to real estate. He was making a little
money from getting advertisers -- mostly tradesmen or banner ads from real estate
firms. Then the crash hit. The entire real estate universe imploded, nobody was
buying anything, nobody was spending ANY money. The scrappy urban pioneer
thing consisted of two camps: 1) People who bought who were suddenly white knuckling
things, worried about everything depending on their total $$ situation and when they
bought. 2) People who didn't buy for whatever reason who had no interest in buying.
Renovations came to a screetching halt. His revenues dropped sharply. And then the shift
came. How could he survive and make money and what was the whole thing about anyway?
Certainly not what he started with. So he is looking to make money with the listings. Once
you own something you are not going to be endlessly interested in speculating on what the value
of a coop or house is. Or if you are not in the market, it is not so interesting. So he has the perfect
business model for 2003 now. And guess what? We all don't care. So the originals find a place and
it takes on an identity that has very little to do with his vision for the site which is dependant on
the market. Everything is different now. Everything. Another thing is that he is interested in marketing
a lifestyle, i.e. the hip, very hip hipster Brooklyn, ala Smorgesburg and Fleas. Fine. Fine. But what does
that have to do with Brownstones and his original brand? It increasingly has nothing to do with me,
anyway.

Hence, boring.

July 29, 2011 5:36 PM - cobblehiller
It's a common tack, the bait and switch tactic in arguments. 'I just screwed you, wait, what's that...look over there!' I saw it. And I did not care for it one bit. This is one of the points where a well-placed email or call or drinks with some PLUSAs would have supported his cause. Tell me, was this guy seriously in Marketing? Did he miss the course on How to make friends and Influence people?
July 29, 2011 5:38 PM - More4Less
rf, very plausible. but all he needed to do was kill the OT and make it short & sweet vs purposefully skewering us then made things worst by providing dumb & dumber logic to defend the decision.

The stuff with Jon started with the new rollout. He showed his colors then.
Ask for help, ignore it, roll out a bad site too soon, use the PLUSAs as beta
testers and then unable to nail the whole fucked up ball of jello to the tree,
he looks for a scapegoat and lashes out. That is the problem with scapegoating;
it is illogical. It is his lack of ability to think which got him in trouble.

I can understand why advertisers would say that- except that the OT was not really part and parcel of the site. He could have made it even less noticeable and even more importantly, no one's arm was twisted to read it or join in. And yet again- had he emailed us and siad something first, had he been nice about it, he wouldn't have gotten people so angry or made them feel betrayed. Instead he posted a crap notice, practically inviting people to bash us. someone should buy that man a crash course at Dale Carnegie on how to win friends and influence people.

July 29, 2011 5:44 PM - bxgrl
From what I understand, there were personal reasons he felt he had to roll out the new site when he did. What surprises me is that the company who did the design has such a hard time fixing the problems. After all this time. And I say that as someone who was going to recommend them to a friend who needs a complex website built. No way I would do that now.
July 29, 2011 5:47 PM - CGar
I also found it curious that he only posted 2 negative emails about us (including from someone many of us know), but I'm guessing he had emails in support of the OT as well that would never see the light of day.
July 29, 2011 5:47 PM - Arkady
There are a lot of instances of his poor marketing skills (anyone remember American Apparel which stiffed him?) He has done fairly well for a variety of reasons - most of them fortuitous, not planned. His decisions since the economy has tanked have not been wise & advertisers aren't going to want to stay if the site is moribund.
July 29, 2011 5:49 PM - CGar
Yeah, I can't imagine it's all about page clicks if no one is commenting in the threads.
July 29, 2011 5:49 PM - Donatella
We were discussing this last night. How many times has any of you had to deliver bad news -- to employers, clients,
family. With something like this, it would have been appropriate if he really felt the OT didn't work and that he wanted
to end it to say thank you for the energy, imput, participation, helping him but that he decided that the OT format wouldn't
work with the site as it is now but don't want to lose the people, understand how they feel (i.e. RECOGNIZE the OT for what
it really was) and acknowledge people's disappoinment, maybe even anger, but that he welcomes participation and ideas.
Then he should have SHUT up.
July 29, 2011 5:56 PM - cobblehiller
"advertisers aren't going to want to stay if the site is moribund."

Now wouldn't that be ironic? The advertisers demand we be gone, and then they don't want to pay because no one is posting. OY.

Dear Cobble:
Forget Brownstoner. We are all way beyond him, and his website was getting tedious anyway.
The only good part left is the Montrose Morris column, and when we build up a little we will lure her away.

Anonymous: Montrose should have her own blog. Her posts have become like the hot model at the Toy Train Hobbyist Barbecue. "Why is that hot model here?," everyone wonders.
I don't think that Mr. B. regrets how he went about killing the O.T. I think he regrets the outcome. Seriously, crazy/fun/controversial comments drive traffic. If Huffington Post ended the commenting function Arianna wouldn't even make enough money to gas up her Prius.

I had a tough time on Brownstoner today. With each new post my creativity died a little more. There came a point when I had to stop, put on some Lanvin and cycle around the island to detox.

i find my way to things like a dog find its way home type of a deal. if you told the dog to meet me at x and y spot that it's never been to before youre gonna be waiting awhile. one of the reasons i choose to stay in nyc is because of it's grid like layout. manhattan is pretty easy to navigate for the most part. i know where the west and the east are. someone once had enough of me and kicked me out of the car in the middle of a very SCARY suburb once (not like an inner ring suburb) but like a culd y sac-ey one and told me go find find the highway and hitch :-/ i was going in circles for hours. then the sun came up and i wound up finding a bus station. this was somewhere in south jersey.

i think im just going to make the chicken and have some bread from the vinegar sandwich with it and then do the vinegar sandwich for lunch tomorrow. i bought a bunch of veggies for it and salad. that shit goes bad SO fast even tho they say otherwise. i did notice that if you wrap lettuce in paper towels it does last longer tho. can get a little wilty, but not totally nasty. it can be kinda hard shopping to eat for one when it comes to fresh produce and making other things. freezing leftovers annoys me for some reason. once it's frozen its no longer appealing to me, so i rarely freeze stuff. but im one of those people who HATES seeing food go to waste.

my grandfather lived on the bowery when he was born (irish) and my grandmother came here from italy when she was, maybe 3? then both their families moved to union city and weehawken NJ. which im not exactly sure if they were slums at the time in the late 30s early 40s. my grandmother claims they were and that her brothers locked her in a cabinet with 1000s of bugs. sounds gross. when i told my grandmother (who raised me) that i moved to brooklyn she was like OMG that is where all the bad people live!!! i was like but i was living in harlem before that!! she didnt really say anything about that, just that brooklyn is where the bad people live. i told her dont worry im living in an extremely nice neighborhood living way beyond my means (youd think she'd be like well THAT's not a good idea!!!). she was just like, just pay your rent on time that's all that matters. she lives in south carolina now (long DEPRESSING story about how she wound up down there) and moved out of a house because of "bugs" and lives in a new house now that has a gazebo (lol) and a bunch of people who sit outside til 11 at night smoking cigarettes and talking. she said she made a bunch of friends in this new place, so that's good. im surprised she adapted so well from having lived in the NYC metro area / urban north jersey for 70 years to now living in south carolina (somewhere outside of charleston) not sure how far out... goose creek? i dont think i could ever live in a place with Creek in the name!!! maybe Dawson's Creek!! that show was so good!!! but that was in massachusetts outside of cape cod or something.

lol. you might be fake but youre amusing. it used to be very difficult explaining to people (if you are dating them why you dont have those things...) you cant blurt it all out once why you have none of those, you have to slowly let explain one at a time over a period of time... like uh i dont have a car because, well, i ADORE public transportation!! and uh, i dont have a license... cuz im so URBAN!!! and uh i dont have a credit card... well that one was always the worst one to explain. saying you like to pay upfront for things blah blah blah. there's a ton of other stuff i dont have that most normal people have. the biggest one right now? a bed. i havent owned a bed since 2006. if i brought someone home (LOL) i guess i could lie and say it's a pull out, but if they asked me to pull it out what would i say? it's jammed? there's nothing to pull out. it's just a couch in my bedroom (it's SO comfy tho... it's leather and huge and feels like sleeping on a cloud). i bought it for 50 bux from a neighbor in my building who was selling their stuff cuz they were moving out of the country. dont ask me what i was sleeping on for a year before i bought that tho :-p
